et’s call it the Christmas Miracle on Bergen Avenue (with thanks to Deborah Garcia for the title.) What was a year-long battle ended with a unanimous vote that took less than a minute to tally. The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority voted unanimously at its monthly meeting on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2019, to approve a resolution that will keep the Keegan Landfill closed forever — never to open again, under any circumstances. Prior to the vote, one could tell something special might be in the works. About 10 minutes before the official meeting was to commence, NJSEA Chairman John Ballantyne approached The Observer and town photographer Barbara B. Goldberg to inform us that the authority would be entering a closed session after the regular

6 Nutley boys take oath as Eagle Scouts

Service Bureau where he led five Scouts and two adults totaling 138 hours of work. Kumar has served as a Patrol Leader, Den Chief, Troop Guide and is currently a Senior Patrol Leader, the highest boy leadership position in the Troop. Edward Greig graduated Nutley High School in June and is currently a freshman at Becker College in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he is majoring in interactive media and design/computer science. Greig went through his Eagle Board of Review in June and he has also earned the Gold Palm for 10 merit badges beyond the 21 required for Eagle. His project involved storage room improvement at his church, St. Mary’s, Rutherford, where he led eight youth members and one adult totaling 102 hours of work. He has served as a Patrol Leader and Instructor in the Troop. Jake Shoemaker, a senior at Seton Hall Prep, earned Eagle Scout with a Bronze Palm in June. His project was dismantling the cemented-in, unused playground equipment and
Nutley Scout Troop 147, sponsored by the Franklin Reformed Church, hosted an Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Dec. 17, to present Scouting’s highest award to six Scouts — Anish Kumar, Edward Greig, Jake Shoemaker, Scott Bolton Jr., Anthony Gola, and Aakash Patel. Senior Patrol Leader Anish Kumar opened the evening ceremony by leading the flag salute with the help of new Scouts. This was followed with the Scouts reciting the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Each Eagle mom and dad received a miniature Eagle pin which they agreed to wear. Anish Kumar, a Nutley High School junior, earned Eagle in April and also received a Bronze Palm for having earned five merit badges beyond the 21 required for Eagle Scout. His project involved the beautification landscaping at the Nutley Family
border fence at the Franklin Reformed Church Community House in Nutley to allow the church better use of the area. He led 16 Scouts and seven adults totaling 61 hours of work. He has served as a Den Chief, Patrol Leader, and for the past two years as the Troop’s Senior Patrol Leader, the top boy leadership position in the Troop. Jake attended the National Scout Jamboree in West Virginia in 2017. Scott Bolton Jr. is a senior at Chapel Hill Academy in Lincoln Park. He earned his Eagle medal in August with a Silver Palm for 15 merit badges beyond the 21 required for Eagle. His project was the renovation and cleanup of the courtyard at Franklin Reformed Church Community House where he led six Scouts and six adults totaling 71 hours of work. He has served as a Troop Quartermaster and Junior Assistant Scoutmaster. He is also employed at Trader Joe’s in Clifton, where he works after school and evenings. Anthony Gola graduated Nutley High School in June and is currently

a freshman at Caldwell University majoring in sports ,anagement. He earned the Eagle Scout Award in October, with the Silver Palm for 15 merit badges beyond the 21 required for Eagle. He has served as Troop Scribe, Patrol Leader, and recently as the Order of the Arrow (the National Boy Scout Honor Society) Troop Representative for the past three years. Gola’s Uncle Frank Ventura Jr. who had earned Eagle Scout in 1987 was there to see his nephew receive his Eagle Medal. Aakash Patel is a senior at Nutley High School. He earned his Eagle Medal with Bronze Palm in November. His project was the improvement and repair of the side entrance of the Franklin Reformed Church’s 96 year old Community House in Nutley. He led 10 Scouts and two adults totaling 88 hours of work.

Hundreds turned out on a cold and windy night Dec. 15 to participate in a candlelight vigil honoring the memory of murdered Jersey City police Det. Joseph Seals, a North Arlington resident, who died earlier this month in a shooting. The vigil, which took place on the steps of Queen of Peace Church, included remarks by Mayor Daniel H. Pronti (left photo) as well as a homily delivered by QP Pastor the Rev. Michael Donovan. Musical tributes and a moment of silence closed the emotional service. Arrest made in Belleville homicide, ECPS says

Stephens II, and Belleville Police Chief Mark Minichini announced jointly last week that Harry Gonzalez, 29, of Bloomfield, has been charged with the murder of Ralph Jeudi, 32, of Hillside.

Newark man charged in alleged Harrison sex assaults: HCPO
By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com A Newark man has been arrested after he allegedly sexually assaulted two residents of a group home in Harrison, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office said. On Friday, Dec. 13, members of the HCPO’s Special Victims Unit arrested Jerome Brewer, 48, of Newark, following an investigation into allegations he committed sexual assault at the group home, according to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez. Brewer was taken into custody at approximately 1:40 p.m. that day at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Jersey City without incident. For the alleged incident with the first victim, Brewer has been charged with aggravated sexual assault upon an incapacitated victim. Brewer also faces charges involving a second victim

CRIME FILES and has been charged with aggravated criminal sexual contact upon an incapacitated victim and lewdness. Brewer was employed as a home aide and was working in the group home at the time of the alleged assaults. which reportedly occurred Nov. 24, Suarez said.Brewer was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny pending his first appearance. The Prosecutor’s Office has filed a motion for pretrial detention of the defendant. A hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, December 18, 2019. Prosecutor Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit for the investigation leading to the arrest.

KPD: Talk about roadside assistance ...
By Karen Zautyk kzautyk@theobserver.com Following a pre-dawn, two-vehicle crash on the Newark Turnpike last week, one of the drivers reportedly fled the scene in his car. But he was soon found, authorities said, thanks in part to an accident witness who picked up the second motorist (a complete stranger) and then chased after the fugitive. The details On Dec. 15 at 4:57 a.m., Kearny Police Officer Jose Castillo responded to a report of a head-on smash-up at 850 Newark Turnpike, where he found “a large debris field and a Honda Accord with heavy front-end damage.” U.S. Postal Police from the
nearby USPS facility said that a second vehicle, and both drivers, were gone. Imbedded in the front bumper of the Honda, police said, Castillo found the New Jersey license plate of a Kia Optima. Shortly thereafter, KPD Officers Sergio Nobre and Giovanni Rodriguez located both drivers and the Kia about a half-mile away near the junction of Newark Turnpike and Route 7. The driver of the Honda, a 32-year-old man from Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, reported that the Kia had come into his lane head-on, without its lights on, struck his car and then fled the scene, leaving him with his now-disabled vehicle. A
POLICE BEAT passing motorist then picked up the stranded driver and pursued the Kia. The Kia driver — Julio Peralta, 47, of Paterson — who apparently was unhurt, gave his account of the accident to Castillo, but it “was garnished with the odor of alcoholic beverages,” police said. Peralta reportedly failed field-sobriety tests, was placed under arrest and was issued summonses for DWI, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report one. He was later released to a family
member. An additional charge for assault by auto was pending. The Honda driver was transported privately to Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville, where he was treated for injuries suffered in the crash and then released, police said. *** Other recent reports from the Kearny police blotter included the following:
Dec. 14 At 3:08 p.m., Officers Chris Manolis and Esteban Gonzalez were dispatched to Kmart where store security reported that they had watched via surveillance cameras as Garfield W. Williams, 30, of Newark, concealed $143.86 worth of infant clothing into his backpack and then made for the exit without paying. Security detained Williams without incident, after which he was arrested by the KPD, charged on a warrant with shoplifting and sent to the Hudson County Jail.
At 12:47 a.m., Officer John Fearon, on patrol near West Bennett and Clinton avenues, saw three boys — later identified as two from Newark, ages 14 and 15, and another 15-year-old from Lindenwold — walking “spread out in the street with flashlights in hand” and peering into parked cars, police said. As the trio made their way toward Livingston Avenue, one of them saw the patrol car and all three “then quickly returned to the sidewalk and began to walk away.” Fearon drove up to the boys to speak with them, but they

He was taken into custody for obstructing the administration of law and was later released to a parent. While running, police said, the other boys dropped two plastic bags, one containing $18.21 in loose change and the other with $8.14 in change and dollar bills, a notepad and a nominal amount of Portuguese and Bahamian money. Officer Anthony Oliveira reportedly found the 15-year-olds hiding behind a tree on Seeley Avenue. They again ran, but he was able to apprehend the Newark teen, who allegedly had two flashlights, four iPhone chargers, two microUSB chargers, two auxiliary charging cords, a car charging USB cord, a pair of Apple earpods and two cell phones on him that the he could not prove were his. Police said Fearon located the other 15-year-old on the Belleville Pike, in possession of a ski mask, two Black and Mild cigars and $3.50 in change and bills. Both suspects were taken into custody on charges of obstructing the administration of law and possession of burglar tools and each was later released to a parent. [BTW: In case you’re wondering where Lindenwold is, it’s near HiNella and Tansboro.] *** At 6:37 p.m., Officer Oliveira was sent to Kearny Avenue and Rose Street on a report of a man under the influence allegedly
disturbing passersby. There, he reportedly found Jesus A. Ibarra, 30, of Kearny, on the sidewalk, swaying (not to music) and shouting. Police said Ibarra’s breath smelled of alcoholic beverages, his eyes were bloodshot and he had a small cut on his lip. While being questioned, police said, he tried to capture a passing dog that was being walked on a leash by its owner and then began screaming profanities at Oliveira. Just then, a 30-year-old neighbor approached, noting that he had been out with Ibarra for a few cocktails, but had lost sight of him, and he was now offering to take him home. Unfortunately, police said, the two made it only half-a-block before Ibarra was again shouting profanities, this time at the entrance to a bar that refused to serve him a beer. Oliveira called an ambulance for the apparently inebriated man, who reportedly refused their medical aid. Ibarra’s wife then arrived and tried to take him home, but he refused her as well, police said. Because of his “continued hostile behavior” toward passing pedestrians and his “refusal to desist,” Ibarra was arrested for disorderly conduct. A mini-bottle of Jim Beam was retrieved from his pocket. While he did not resist handcuffing, police said, “the cuffs sapped Ibarra’s willingness to walk to a patrol car and he lay down in the street. He was carried as dead weight to the nearby patrol car for transport to HQ.” In the car, he reportedly began slamming his head into the partition between the front and rear seats, “causing the officer to have to pull over and intervene.” When placed into a cell at HQ, he reportedly flipped the mattress onto the floor, smacked, punched, kicked and rattled the bars and tried to cover the surveillance camera with wet toilet paper. Police said, “Ibarra was then placed into enhanced restraints for
his safety, after which he fell asleep.” He was charged on summonses with disorderly conduct and violation of the town ordinance prohibiting public intoxication and was later turned over to Harrison police, whose court had a $600 warrant out for his arrest for obstructing the administration of law.

Leading the Vikings was senior guard Michael Cortellino, the lone returning starter from last season. The 5-foot-11 Cortellino tossed in 14 points in the victory. So the Vikings got off to a good start on a special night honoring a special man, a fallen hero, a friend to the community who lost his life tragically doing his job, protecting the people of Jersey City. “It really was a good night,” D’Andrea said. And there’s hope for more good nights down the road. The Vikings host their annual William Ferguson Holiday Tournament Thursday, facing University Charter of Jersey City in the first round, with Belleville playing Bergen Tech in the other semifinal. “We have good athleticism,” D’Andrea said. “We have a good bunch of kids. If they buy into what we’re doing, we’ll win some games this year. We have a good foundation for now and the future.”

It’s an advantage that frankly we didn’t have last year. Senior Pedro Carrero is a 6-foot forward. “Pedro has a good outside shot,” Mullins said. “He’s a strong kid. He worked on strengthening his body. I’m expecting big things from him.” Senior Ryan Gruttaduria is a 6-foot-3 center.

DOMINICK (DOM) JOHN D’AMORE Dominick (Dom) John D’Amore, a lifelong resident of Kearny, died peacefully on Friday, Dec. 13. He was 88. Dominick was born and raised on Rome Street in “Down Neck” Newark to parents Dominick and Nancy D’Amore (Bisogna). Dominick grew up in a small house, but a large and loving family of four brothers (Joseph, Tommy, and predeceased Casey and Lou) and seven sisters (Mildred and predeceased Helen, Sue, Nancy, Betty, Rose and Madeline). As a child, Dominick loved swimming in Newark Bay, lighting bonfires, skating, playing stickball, baseball and kick the can. He also loved toy soldiers, model planes and electric train sets. Dominick held a special compassion for dogs and elephants and he was a magnet for children at parties and gatherings.
Dominick served active duty in Korea from 1952-53 as a corporal in the US Army Infantry. Dominick was married in 1956 to his lifelong love, Evelyn Rose (Augustitus), and they were together for nearly 58 years before Evelyn’s passing in 2014. Dominick and Evelyn raised two children, Glenn and Dianne. Dominick worked his entire career for Pfaff & Kendall (P&K) in Newark, retiring as plant supervisor in the late 1980s. P&K aluminum poles blanket the roads and highways in the US and Canada today. In Kearny, Dominick was an active member of the Kearny Senior Citizens club, VFW, and American Legion. Dominick loved to tell stories to his grandchildren, teach them to ride bikes, feed them ice cream for breakfast, or cook them a full waffle or bacon and egg breakfast at 5 a.m., before a crabbing trip. Dominick was an avid dancer at all weddings, loved Frank Sinatra and made a top-notch Thanksgiving stuffing. He also loved his wife Eve-

Clara Maass recognized for increase in organ, eye donations
Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville, has earned platinum recognition for its efforts to increase organ, eye and tissuedonor registrations, through Workplace Partnership for Life (WPFL) Hospital Organ Donation Campaign. The WPFL is a national initiative that unites the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and the organ donation community with workplaces across the nation in spreading the word about the importance of donation. Clara Maass was one of more than 1,490 organizations in the country to participate in the 2019 campaign and one of 639 organizations to earn platinum recognition. “We’re honored to receive the Platinum Award this year in recognition of our efforts to support organ and tissue donation” Mary Ellen Clyne, president and chief executive officer of Clara Maass Medical Center said. “At Clara Maass, we truly understand the gift of life that is given to others
through organ and tissue donation and are proud of our work to educate our community and to provide opportunities to register as an organ donor.” Maria Paradiso, nurse manager of the Intensive Care Unit and Joseph Wojtecki, assistant director of the Patient Experience Department, served as the medical center’s co-chairs for the 2019 campaign, and partnered with various hospital departments including the Emergency Department and Public Relations in order to convey the importance of organ, eye and tissue donation to patients, visitors and the community at-large. Between October 2018 and April 2019, Clara Maass participated in HRSA’s WPFL Hospital Organ Donation Campaign. That program challenges hospitals and healthcare organizations to “let life bloom” by educating staff, patients, visitors, and communities about the critical need for organ, eye and tissue donation and by offering them opportunities to register as donors.

He’s going to get rebounds and score on put-backs.” Sophomore Ryan Gil is a 6-foot-3 forward with a ton of potential. “He has a very good future,” Mullins said. “When he gets bigger and stronger, he’ll be a better player. He’s a hard worker who drives to the basket well. He needs to work on his outside shot. He also jumps well. He can get up there.” Junior Keuris Matos is a 6-foot-1 center. “It’s only his second year of playing basketball,” Mullins said of Matos. “He’s going to help us under the basket.” Senior Henry Soares is a 5-foot-10 guard. “Henry is very good at taking charges,” Mullins said. “He’s a good allaround player.” Junior Donovan DaSilva is a 6-foot forward. “He’s one of our strong-

He’s going to help us as the season goes on. He’s still learning the system.” Junior Rafael Souza, the younger brother of Nicolas, is a 5-foot-10 swingman. Junior Jack Cullen, the baseball standout, is a 6-foot-2 forward. Cullen didn’t play basketball last season. Sophomore Alan Antoneli is a 5-foot-9 guard who also adds a certain
dimension to the Kardinals’ bench. “He has speed,” Mullins said. Needless to say, Mullins has a deep roster to work with. “We have a lot of kids,” Mullins said. “The kids are working hard. If they keep the intensity up and outwork our opponents, we’ll be fine. We’ll see how well we manage.” After facing McNair Academic in Jersey City on Monday, the Kardinals host their own holiday tournament. The Kearny Christmas Tournament features the Kardinals against the Bard School of Newark, then Nutley facing Cranford in the other semifinal on Friday night. The winners get together Saturday afternoon after a consolation game. In future games, the Kards face Memorial Jan. 7, then face HCIAL powers St. Peter’s Prep and Hudson Catholic in consecutive games. “It’s a tough schedule,” Mullins said. “We’ll see where we stand.”

meeting was to begin. When the closed meeting began, those in attendance — there were about 30 in total — would have to clear the chamber and bring all electronic recording equipment out. While the purpose of the closed session was unknown then — such meetings generally occur to discuss matters of litigation or employee-related issues — it was the first time since West Hudson residents began packing the meetings in March that an executivesession took place out of order and near the start of a meeting. Optimism was immediately in the air. A few minutes before the closedsession, which took about 20 minutes, ended, NJSEA Spokesman Brian Aberback handed out a copy of the resolution that called for the continued and permanent closure of the landfill. Once attendees were permitted to return to the chamber, it was clear this ordeal was coming to a close, though a lot of work still lies ahead. As the public session returned, Kearny Mayor Alberto G. Santos, who fought relentlessly to close the landfill permanently and to ensure it gets a permanent, impermeable cap to keep the dangerous gas hydrogen sulfide from escaping, was the first to address the NJSEA to encourage the resolution’s passage. “It’s been a very long and hard road for Kearny residents in respect to the Keegan Landfill, to have it closed and have it capped,” Santos said. “The resolution you’re proposing today does just that. So I am very pleased for my community that we reached this day. It’s a framework for a settlement. The appeals — the actions — all that could (and did) end so that we can undertake the work for proper closing and capping this landfill … and the nightmare that this has been for our community, the health impact … but our community persisted. We were finally heard. “ … I extend my gratitude to you, the commissioners, to the director (Vincent Prieto) and your staff for helping us reach this day.” The agreement, Santos says, came to fruition following negotiations between attorneys for the NJSEA and the Town of Kearny. They’d been working on it for a couple of weeks prior to the Thursday-morning meeting, according to NJSEA President Vincent Prieto. “It provides the best framework we could hope for. In order to install the cap there must be additional clean fill. I will make sure the Kearny community understands that,” Santos said. “It will only be clean fill. Once we reach those slopes, the impermeable cap will be installed. This will be done in two phases — the west side of the landfill will be done first … and hopefully a year from now, we could point to a properly-closed landfill on the western side. And then the eastern side will be the following year.” Santos says the plan calls for “an aggressive schedule” to get the landfill closed as quickly as possible — likely sometime in 2021 —and that he looks forward to working with the NJSEA to ensure it all happens according to plan.
Santos then took time to praise those who worked so hard, with him, to get to this day. “Many of them are not here today because of the holidays,” he said. “This is a collective victory for all of us. The sports authority did the right thing — for our Town of Kearny it is absolutely the right thing. And it was residents … who spoke to their neighbors and used social media effectively” who were able to change the outcome. Santos also noted he hopes Kearny and the NJSEA repairs its relationship. “It may take longer than the capping, but it’s something I am going to do,” he said. “ … We want to restore that confidence and trust. And now we move forward … I will do all I can to restore that confidence and trust.” Then, Commissioner and Essex County Sheriff Armando B. Fontoura chimed in — offering some muchneeded humor that was rarely present at normally tense NJSEA meetings. “I just want to commend and congratulate Mayor Santos, and his council, but most importantly, the residents of Kearny, for their patience, their doggedness — you guys were just relentless,” Fontoura said via a teleconference line (he wasn’t present at the meeting, but did vote in favor of the resolution remotely.) “This was good government at work — good community at work, and I want to make sure that you understand that I look forward to working with you, Al, the council, and the rest of you citizens — and I’ll look forward to coming to join a soccer match with my family … I think I’ll be getting Christmas cards from you, Al, in particular — and I look forward to working with you guys to make sure all that you need and deserve comes to fruition.” Afterward, two others who had a huge impact on this resolution, First Ward Councilman Albino Cardoso and Kearny Health Office Ken Pincus also addressed the NJSEA briefly. (Also in attendance at the meeting were Councilmembers Eileen Eckel and Peter Santana, as was Santos’s assistant and Recreation Chairwoman Lyla DeCastro.) Ballantyne, meanwhile, says he hopes that with the matter resolved that the NJSEA and Kearny residents might stay in touch. “It truly was amazing to see you come together. The stick-to-itiveness that you had — I can appreciate that,” Ballantyne said. “For our staff — we have such a dynamic staff here at the NJSEA. I hope that in the future, as we move forward, this is not the end of Kearny’s participation. We do offer a lot, a tremendous amount of resources here for the community. And I hope that in time you’ll come back to celebrate some of the programs we have — especially for the children.” When the resolution was ultimately passed in a unanimous vote, those from West Hudson in attendance — including John Downey Jr. and Maggie Millar — roared with applause in approval. In the future, passive recreation opportunities will allow the public to access to the former landfill and to have use of the Kearny marsh.
