H THE LIFE OF A teenager. Sleeping in late on Saturdays. And Sundays. An entire summer being able to do just about anything they want. Parents — sounds pretty
typical, right? Well, not for two Kearny High School soon-to-be juniors. The duo we’re about to introduce you to not only aren’t your typical teenagers — that’s not to say they don’t like doing what teens do — but at 16, each has accomplished, already, what most adults never do.

Gap,” a spot where teenagers are given a chance to write about topics of their choice. More about that later. We found out about this pair from one’s dad. Ray Lopez, a detective with the Kearny Police Department, came to the office a few weeks ago to let us know about his daughter and her friend. We knew we had a story right away — and a big one, at that. But we never could have envisioned just how talented
these two 16-year-olds are. Enter Giuliana Evangelista and Alyssa Lopez. Both just began their penultimate year at KHS. Evangelista says the motivation for writing the book spans back to the pair’s freshman year — in, of all classes, geometry. “That year, we found geometry was very easy to do,” Evangelista said. “It came easy to us, so we finished early a lot.” When they’d finish their

to the copyright to finding an editor, we did it all.” And best of all — the two teens hope for one other thing. “We do want to make money,
too,” Lopez said. And by the looks of things — they should be doing a lot of that over the next few months and years.

in-class work ahead of time, Evangelista and Lopez would get together and they came up with the concept of writing a work of fiction. (We’re not going to give away many details about the book because we hope you’ll purchase one to ensure the two entrepreneurs are successful.) “When we began, we didn’t think of it ever being published,” Evangelista said. Instead, there was a plan to post the book online — to do it all for fun. But somewhere around writing the book’s 13th chapter — it was the most challenging one for them to write — they decided to go ahead to try to get the book printed. “‘Let’s just do this,’” Evangelista recalled the two friends saying to each other. And that’s exactly what they did. As of Sept. 1, the book, called “Hidden Dimensions: What Will Be the Cost of Survival?” is now available at amazon.com and at some Barnes & Noble bookstores. On Sept. 15, Evangelista and Lopez will be at the Kearny
Public Library from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a book signing. You’ll be able to purchase the book there if you haven’t done so already. In-between writing, Evangelista is a past winner of the Optimists’ annual oratorical contest, writes for the KHS newspaper, is a member of the school’s book club, the library council and the Christian-based Alpha & Omega club. Lopez is a member of all of those same clubs except for the Alpha & Omega. Lopez says one of the biggest challenges in co-authoring a book was character development. “There are six major characters — and each has its own personality,” Lopez said. “We had to agree on traits, on the specifics of the personalities. But we got there.” In addition to the trilogy, Lopez says the pair hopes to also write a spin-off from the original series. She says the pair worked on everything from conceptualization to finding someone to read and review the book.
