Coughlin was a U. S. Army and Navy veteran of World War II. In the Navy, he served on the battleship USS Massachusetts which fired the first and last Navy military cannon fire in the war. Evelyn Sciscoia of Nutley was presented with the Nutley Military Distinguished Service Medal for her husband, Dominick, who served in the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II.
