I have always tried to do my best in school, sports and in my community. I am a student with a 4.0 grade point average. I take pride in working and staying disciplined. I do this for my success and to set a good example for others around me. Balancing scho olwork with sports has taught me a lot about managing my time being strong and sticking to things. Sports are a part of my life. I play basketball, volleyball and golf. Each sport has helped me grow in ways. I just started playing golf this year. I am gett ing better every day because I am committed to practicing. Basketball is a sport I really love. It has taught me how to lead a teammate and push through tough times. I am excited to play basketball at Cornell College in Mount Vernon after I finish school. This is an opportunity for me because not many athletes get to play sports in college. I also like to be involved in my community. I think it is important to give back to my community because success is not just about what I achieve but also about how I he lp others.

I do volunteer work with the Youth Leadership Team at the Crossing Church, Main Street Inc., George Washington Elementary and my own school, Keokuk High School. My goal is to be a schoolteacher. I want to work with students because I think those years are very important. Teachers can inspire students and make them curious and help them love learning. While education is not necessarily a STEM major, educators set the tone of learning for the youth and help to introduce them to those fields. I want to be a t eacher who makes a difference in my students’ lives. I want my classroom to be a place where students feel supported, motivated and excited to learn. I also want to coach youth sports in my hometown of Keokuk, Iowa. Coaching would allow me to stay involved in the sports I love and to mentor athletes. I want to help kids develop their skills, character, work ethic and confidence just like my coaches have done for me. Overall, I would say that I am a driven person who cares about my community. I am proud of w ho I am today, but I am even more excited about who I want to become: a teacher, a coach and a positive influence on others.

Hello I am a 18 year that is graduating from Keokuk High School on May 24th 2026. My career goal is to work my way up to NP Nurse Practitioner. My dad served in the military up to 2012 he is my ride or die. He is the Commercial drivers license Instructor f or Southeastern Community College. My mom is also my ride or die she worked at Holiday Terrace, Fort Madison, and Richard Drive Apartments. My mom's boss at the apartments has by far my favorite boss of my mom's which was Larry Matteson before he sold the apartments. Now my mom had to have a triple bypass surgery for her heart because she had some blocked arteries. When she went to recovery she started to have issues because the surgeon severed her nerve to her left lung so now she doesn't have any use of h er left lung because of the surgeon. I have been taking care of her since she had her heart surgery in July of 2025. I would not know what to do if I lost my mom when she had to have her heart surgery because she is the only person that I can talk to abou t what is going on in my life.

Throughout my life, I have noticed that my main goal has always been to make sure everyone around me is okay. Sometimes that meant prioritizing other people’s well -being over my own. This has been draining at times, but it has taught me one of life’s most important lessons; be kind to everyone. Be kind to your best friends, the people who have hurt you, the people who are different from you. Everyone. You never know the internal battles people are fighting. As I’ve become a young adult, I have realized that my willingness to help others and empathy could be more than just a habit, but a career. I have finally found something that I love, and I am good at. I have always been someone who cares deeply for others. Each of my experiences in life have shaped me an d led me to want to become a children’s behavioral health counselor.

The empathetic, caring, and resilient person I am today comes from the battles I have faced during my childhood. I have watched my parents fall time and time again. Whether that be losing jobs or stealing food from the grocery store to feed my siblings and I. Every experience like these has taught me one thing for sure; I never want to end up like my parents. A college education for myself means being able to provide for my children, never letting them wonder where their next meal will come from, and a guar anteed education awaiting them. I have decided that the history of addiction and poverty ends with me. I committed myself to turning our family history into something greater. All it takes to change a bloodline is for one seed like me to be planted. One pe rson in the family to decide they have had enough. Being the first person in my family to go to college has shown me how far I’ve come, with and without my parents by my side. The challenges I have faced have strengthened me and taught me that my success i s a choice, and I can become whoever I want to be whether I have support or not.

I chose a career in psychology, specifically children’s behavioral health because I was once the child who needed someone to support me during the hard times in life. I want to be the person I needed; someone who helps children process, heal, and believe they were made for more. No circumstances should ever define a child’s future, and I want them to know that. In my case, this isn’t just a career, but a way for me to use my experiences to help children become the best version of themselves, regardless of what they are going through.

Having gone to counseling since sixth grade has taught me the importance of boundaries, which has made it much easier to listen and understand what others are going through, instead of letting that weigh me down. Because of this, I believe I could make an effective children’s counselor. I have not only experienced mental health struggles at a young age, but also learned from them.

At the end of the day, all of my experiences have led me to where I am now. They have shown me exactly who I want to be and what I want to spend my life doing. I have a strong desire to help others and make the world a better place for as many people as po ssible, and that is the path I plan to keep following.

Growing up in the small Iowa town of Keokuk, I spent many hours dreaming about the chance to leave Keokuk to find opportunity in a bigger, more diverse place. I was primarily raised by my grandfather, a Navy veteran and retired factory worker. He loved an d cared for me. My father was in and out of my life; mostly out. I would see him only a few times when I was younger, and he did not financially support me. He currently lives not far from Keokuk, but I do not see him. My mom worked in Waterloo most of my childhood. She would call me often and come to see me occasionally, though. She later moved back to Keokuk and resides with my grandpa and me. My mom has a chronic illness, and my grandfather and I help her manage it. As long as I can remember, my family has struggled financially. At fourteen, I got a job as a helper in a home daycare and contributed to the household.

Later, I got a job at Sonic, where I still work today. Although I appreciate my job at Sonic, it often requires me to work until one or two in the morning during the school week. This has made it a challenge to balance work, school, and extracurriculars. D espite this, I am determined to maintain my grades and participate in the extracurricular activities I love. I love show choir and enjoy performing and competing in invitationals. The show choir has given me confidence and a reason to keep coming to schoo l, even when I haven't felt as motivated to be there. Basketball cheerleading has also given me confidence and helped keep me school -focused and motivated. Being a basketball cheerleader has kept me close to basketball, which is one of my passions. I hope to have a career in the field of sports management, primarily in women’s basketball. The balance between work and school does keep me tired many days, though. I have always wanted to succeed and go farther and further than some of the people in my family . I have former friends who dropped out of school and tried to encourage me not to take school and grades seriously, but I did not quit or stop trying to make it to graduation and then to college. I am proud of the person I have become and my accomplishmen ts. I am excited for my future and the opportunities that the University of Northern Iowa will open up to me.

My name is Liam Martin and I plan to study music education at the University of Iowa next fall. Music has been a big part of my life since I can remember. My mother heard me singing along to a song on the radio when I was very young and decided to put me i nto singing lessons. This choice has changed

my life forever. I have participated in many honor choirs and have received high scores at solo and ensemble. I have performed for hundreds of people in many places because of this education in music. I have even been able to write music and put it out int o the world for people to enjoy. I have found music education to be my major of choice because it allows me to share this love to future generations. It’s no secret that music departments are struggling around the nation; however, I would love t o help make music more of a priority. Music has been a cornerstone of human civilization since the very beginning and teachers of music are needed to carry it forward into the future. I have often been told that the pay I will receive will not be very grea t, but to me the pay comes second. The sharing to create music is more important than money to me.

I appreciate this opportunity to share my goals and aspirations with you in the hopes of receiving a scholarship to help me with my future education. I plan to graduate from Keokuk High School in May and then attend the University of Missouri -Columbia in t he fall. This is a tradition that started with my grandpa, one of which I am excited to continue. My ultimate goal would be to work towards my

Masters in either Architecture or Engineering. Ever since I can remember I have enjoyed the pursuit of trying to figure out how things are built. I find it fascinating to take certain items apart and put them back together. In the past year I have receiv ed a sewing machine and have taught myself how to create many different items. When someone needs something built in our house, they ask me. It is from this love of exploration that I have decided a career in the field of Engineering or Architecture is the direction I want to focus my energy.

This past summer I job shadowed a family friend who received his degree in Mechanical Engineering. He is using this degree in the medical field by helping create tools to help with ocular surgeries. While I do not have the desire to work hands -on in the f ield of medicine like my parents have chosen, I am still passionate about a career where I can help and contribute to the better of society. The idea that I can create something that could help save a life, or make life better for others sounds like a life well lived. I have been raised in a family that celebrates hard work and the passion for learning. I have been blessed to be surrounded by so many good teachers at Keokuk High School that have encouraged me to have high expectations for my future. I hop e that I can make them proud by graduating from College and find a career that I can succeed in while helping change lives for the good. Again, I appreciate this opportunity you provide to not only me, but my classmates. It is because of organizations like this one that our future is an optimistic one.

• the approximate number of hours per week and weeks per year spent participating, and

• any leadership positions, letters earned, awards, or recognition received for participation.

Activity #1: I have been a part of our school's youth leadership team (YLT) for the past year. We spend approximately five hours a week and approximately 36 weeks per year. I don't have a designated role, but I am usually the one that helps decide on the community acti vities we do each week. Some things we do are play bingo with the elderly in the nursing home, help make food bags at a church for the kids in need, we go into the elementary schools and do lessons and play games with them, and we help at a local business called Main Street Keokuk where we help come up with ideas or events to do to bring people into Keokuk.

Activity #2: I am also a part of our school's National Honor Society (NHS). I have been a part of this program for about a year and a half now. We don't do too many things for NHS but some things we have done are having a chicken dinner night where we had to sell ticke ts to raise money for a future event. We sold over 150 tickets. The biggest event we have done is the senior citizen's dinner. This dinner is a big community event where us NHS kids serve the senior citizens of Keokuk at a big church.

Activity #3: The last activity is the school's volleyball team. I participated in volleyball for my whole high school career, but I first started playing when I was 4. During season I spent roughly 10 -20 hours a week depending on what the week looked like, so if we wer e having practices or games. I spent roughly 8 weeks out of the year in season but approximately 16 weeks doing training and open gyms. I was the team captain for two years and held a pretty big role as a leader for a year before that. I have received all conference twice and second team once. I made the all -academic team both my junior and senior year and I earned all -district one year.

My first self-employment job was babysitting. I had babysat for a couple neighbors and family members. I would pick their kids up from sporting events, school, or friends' houses and would take them home and feed them and hangout with them until their pare nts came home. Most of the time these were Friday or Saturday nights. My first real job was at Suite Escape Tanning and Clothing Salon. I worked/work there as a receptionist. I take phone calls, make appointments, clean tanning beds, and check people out. I have worked here since November of 2024 and still currently work here occasionally. I work anywhere from 5 -20 hours a week. I worked at Baxter's Sports Complex in Fort

Madison, Iowa. I mostly ran the concession stand but every once in a while, I would run the front gate taking money. I started working here in October of 2025 and stopped in December of 2025 because they closed for the season. I will pick this back up in t he spring when they're open for the season around April. I worked here on the weekends and would work roughly 20 hour weekends.

Growing up, I have learned that who you are is shown best through how you treat others and how hard you are willing to work for your goals. I would describe myself as respectful, hardworking, and someone who truly cares about people. Whether I am in the cl assroom, on the court, or at work, I try to give my full effort and stay positive. My experiences balancing school, sports, and jobs have helped shape my character and have prepared me for my future career in education. My goal is to become a first -grade t eacher in Iowa and make a lasting difference in the lives of young students. Being involved in sports like softball and volleyball has taught me lessons I will carry with me for life. I’ve learned how to be part of a team, how to communicate, and how to p ush myself even when things get tough. There were days when practices were long and exhausting, but I showed up ready to work because my teammates depended on me. Sports have helped me build leadership skills and responsibility, which are qualities that wi ll be important in my future classroom. Just like on a team, a classroom works best when everyone feels supported and valued. Working while in high school has also played a big role in shaping who I am. At my jobs, I have learned how to be dependable, manage my time, and interact with all kinds of people. Balancing work hours with school and activities has not always been easy, but it has taught me discipline and maturity. I have learned the importance of earning what you have and taking pride in doing a j ob well. These experiences have prepared me for the responsibilities of adulthood and for the dedication required in a teaching career. My passion for becoming a first -grade teacher comes from my love for kids and learning. I want to be the kind of teache r who makes students feel safe, encouraged, and excited to come to school each day. First grade is such an important year because it is when many children truly begin to build confidence in reading, writing, and social skills. I want to help shape that fou ndation in a positive way. My goal is not only to teach academic subjects, but also to be someone my students can look up to and trust. In the future, I hope to build a life centered around family, education, and giving back to my community. This scholars hip would help me continue my education and move closer to achieving my dream of becoming a teacher. I am motivated, caring, and ready to work hard for my future. I believe the experiences I have had so far have prepared me to succeed, and I am excited for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others.

There have been a lot of times in my life where I have felt like I was just trying to keep my head above water. Balancing school, work, and everything going on in my personal life has not been easy, especially when I have had to rely on myself so much. Eve n though it has been overwhelming at times, those experiences have shaped who I am today and pushed me to become more independent, determined, and focused on my future. Because of what I have gone through, I have developed a strong desire to build a better life for myself and become a teacher who supports others in ways I didn't always have.

One of the biggest challenges I have faced is learning how to manage everything on my own. Working part-time while being a full -time student has been exhausting and there are times, especially coming back from winter break into second semester, where every thing feels overwhelming. Burnout has been a real struggle for me, and there have been times where I felt like I was behind and couldn't do it anymore. On top of that have never had a strong support system at home. I have always been on my own, financiall y and emotionally.

Even though these challenges have been difficult, they have also made me stronger. I have learned how to push through when things feel overwhelming and to stick to my goals even when it would be easier to give up. Balancing work, school, and personal stru ggles has taught me responsibility, and resilience. I have realized that even when I feel like I am drowning, I am still moving. Those experiences have helped me become who I am today. My end goal is to become an elementary teacher. Being in all my obs ervation classes has helped confirmation that. Being in those classrooms showed me how important it is for students to feel supported, understood, and encouraged. I want to be the kind of teacher who creates a safe environment where student feel comfortab le and confident, no matter what they are going through. My own experiences have made me more aware of how important support and encouragement can be, and I want to provide that for my future students.

Letter of Recommendation:

January 24, 2026

To whom this may concern,

My name is Maddie Marlin and I am writing to wholeheartedly recommend Makenna Spurgeon for the scholarship from your organization As her coach for the past three years, I have had the pleasure of witnessing her remarkable growth and development both as an athlete and as an individual Throughout our time together, Makenna has consistently demonstrated her hardworking nature, exceptional leadership skills, and unwavering determination

From the time I met Makenna, it was clear that she possessed a unique blend of talent and perseverance. Her work ethic is truly commendable; she was always the first to arrive at practice and she would be the first cheerleader that would offer to do extra volunteering. Makenna juggled many activities along with working, and she managed her time with ease She took on extra responsibilities as a senior by being a captain and leading a team of 28 individuals

Makenna is a reliable teammate who is always willing to step up and support others Whether it is offering encouragement during tough times or celebrating the successes of her peers, she fosters a sense of camaraderie that is essential for a cohesive team environment. Her contributions extend beyond her performance in games; she actively works to create a positive atmosphere where everyone feels valued

In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend Makenna Spurgeon for the scholarship from your organization She would represent your organization well She is a hard working, determined, and reliable individual who will undoubtedly make significant contributions to whatever she puts her mind to. I am confident that she will excel in her academic pursuits and continue to inspire those around her, just as she has done on our team.

Seventeen years. That’s how long I was lucky enough to have my Granny in my life. I turned eighteen on March 12th, and it has been 327 days since she passed away on April 19th at 11:27 a.m., surrounded by our entire family. For as long as I can remember, my Granny battled cancer. Doctor’s appointments, treatments, and hospital visits became a normal part of life. I also grew up hearing stories about my mom’s journey as a childhood cancer survivor, but those stories didn’t fully feel real until I watched my Granny go through her own battle. Seeing her strength gave those stories meaning. When my Granny passed away, I was in the room with my family. It was the first time I had

ever witnessed someone die, and I didn’t know what to expect. But somehow it wasn’t scary. It was actually very peaceful, and I am thankful for that. Later, I decided to take a CNA class, not fully knowing why, just feeling drawn to it. During my clinical rounds, everything began to make sense. I discovered that I truly enjoy caring for others. My passion for healthcare also grew through my experience helping my Granny communicate after multiple treatments for mouth cancer. Her treatments made it difficult to speak, and I saw how frustrating it was for her. I helped her find new ways to communicate by using a notepad and pen, and later a communication device. This scholarship aligns closely with my plans, as I am committed to improving the quality of life f or patients of all ages. It feels like everything in my life has been guiding me toward healthcare. From my Granny’s treatments to the compassion shown by hospice workers, nurses, and doctors, I saw firsthand the impact that empathy and care can have. The se experiences inspired me to pursue a path where I can provide that same comfort and support to others. In addition to these experiences, I have dedicated over 400 hours to volunteering in my community throughout high school. I will receive the Silver Co rd, an honor awarded to KHS seniors who demonstrate outstanding service. Volunteering has strengthened my compassion, work ethic, and ability to connect with people from all walks of life. My most significant volunteer experience was when I went to the Dom inican Republic and helped build a new school that was damaged in a hurricane. On May 13, 2026, I will graduate from Southeastern Community College with my Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate, which I was able to obtain while attending high school ful l-time. This fall, I will attend the University of Iowa to pursue a degree in nursing to become an oncology nurse. Cancer has shaped my family’s story, and instead of allowing that to bring only sadness, I want to turn that experience into something posit ive. I hope to support patients who feel scared, overwhelmed, or uncertain and help them feel less alone. My Granny taught me what courage looks like, how important family is, and how to face life’s challenges with strength and grace. Even though she is n o longer here, the lessons she taught me continue to guide me every day. She would be incredibly proud of the person I am becoming. Thank you for your consideration.

To whom it may concern:

I can't recommend Darby Tackes highly enough!

I served as Darby's pastor for 11 years in her growing up years. And I'm so proud of the young leader she is becoming! Darby served on the worship team with me, in addition to her many other commitments and responsibilities. During our time serving together she was reliable, and a servant leader in a position that was front -facing before hundreds of people. And requiring of her, among many of her gifts, courage and humility. Both of which are desperately needed in this age, and both of which she has in abundance.

Darby is bound to do really great things, and will be an excellent choice for any scholarship you consider her for !
