FROM THE

GENERAL MANAGER Mike Barrett,CGCS

I can’t believe September has already arrived; summer seems to be shorter every year. I hope everyone had the opportunity to enjoy the great events we had this year. The Memorial Day Hilltop Celebration, Sunday Fundays at the pool, Hilltop Concert Series, 4th of July Pool Party, Crab Fest, Pool Bingo, National Ice Cream Day, and Tennis & Pickleball socials. The golf calendar was filled with great events including themed Couples Golf, Operation 36, Ladies Game Night, PGA Junior League, Tuesday Night Men’s League, B-Team, Little Tykes Golf Camp and the Junior Club Championship. We’ve added a new Book Club and Mahjong evening to our calendar, and we will continue to add new great events for everyone. Thank you to Dan and his team for providing fantastic course conditions throughout the summer. I can’t remember a year with the number of storms and rainfall we received this summer. We’ve had over 17 inches of rain since July 1st and much of it came in quick violent bursts, not nice all day soaking events. The shorter days and cooler nights will be great for the course once they finally arrive. I would like to thank all the parents and volunteers of our Holly Hills Hurricanes Swim Team who made the season a great success. We hosted two home meets this year and getting the pool ready requires a lot of hard work. All the tables and chairs need to be moved, and the diving boards are removed to make room for the diving blocks to be installed. Lane lines installed, tents set up, audio system and scoring tables set and making sure the coolers are filled with drinks and snacks for the swimmers and guests. A special thanks to Melanie Moreland for making sure we had all the details necessary for a smooth season. The swim team ended their season with a great banquet and award ceremony. The final phase of the irrigation system installation is underway, along with golf course improvements on the back nine. Irrigation work on holes 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 will complete the system, giving Dan and his team the best technology available. The effective coverage area of modern sprinkler heads, along with proper pressure, individual head control, GPS mapping, variable speed pumps and an onsite weather station allows us to manager water using technology and science.

Golf course construction includes holes 14, 15, 16, 17 and forward tees on holes 9, 11 and 13. The work is being completed very quickly; 14, 16 and 17 green surrounds are finished, along with the forward tees on 9 and 13. The hole 15 green surround and the forward tee on 11 should be completed next week, and the weather should be perfect to grow everything in. Thank you for your patience during the work. Everything will be wrapped up in time for some great fall golf. You will be receiving the survey via email in the next couple of weeks; please take the time to complete it. Thank you to everyone who completed the member survey last year; we received 209 responses. We continue to make capital improvements in all areas of the club and train our team to provide outstanding service. We have built a great team who work hard to ensure our members and guests have a memorable experience every time they visit Holly Hills. We will use your feedback to develop action plans to enhance your experience at Holly Hills. Thank you for your generous support of two great charities we raised money for this summer. Our KE Campers set up a lemonade stand again this year and raised $1,000 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. This is a great organization that has raised over $300 million to fund childhood cancer research, raise awareness, and support families fighting cancer. We also raised $2,000 for The Folds of Honor Foundation. This organization provides lifechanging educational scholarships to the spouses and children of America’s fallen or disabled military service members and first responders.

SUPERINTENDENT’S UPDATE Dan Wildeman, GCS

COURSE RESILIENCE AND CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS The rainfall that we have seen at Holly Hills throughout July and August has been truly astonishing, totaling 17 inches between July 1st and August 28th. This amount of rainfall can be a blessing (the irrigation pond is full!) and a curse when dealing with highly maintained turfgrass. To keep our greens, fairways, tees and rough mowed at heights that vary from 0.130 - 2.25 inches, we need the ground to be nice and firm. Thankfully our golf course drains and moves water off the surface better than average in most cases. Keeping the grass mowed is the most basic challenge we face when we have constant wet conditions. It is very easy for our operators to ignore wet areas and cause damage by mowing when it is too wet. Constant communication between managers and staff, as well as monitoring the wet areas from before sunrise through the afternoon, has been vital in avoiding widespread mechanical damage. Ultimately, to provide a quality playing surface, the grass needs to be mowed consistently, and the clippings cleared from the surface or collected.

until the sod is fully rooted in. Due to a last-minute schedule change at a different golf course, our construction contractors have been able to get ahead of schedule with the help of extra staff and equipment. Construction on #15 is ongoing and will be a longer process to have the hole back open for play. The sod on the front half of the green will be removed so they can recontour the putting surface and then lay the sod back down. This project is similar to what was done on #6 green last year. By recontouring the front half of #15 green, we will be able to add additional pin placements to the front of this green. Before this change, we were unable to use the front of this green for a hole location because it was too severely sloped. For the time being, there will be a temporary green in the approach until the newly sodded green is grown back in and strong enough to withstand golfing traffic. I am estimating the green will be open for at least part-time play in early October.

During my career in Maryland, I have never seen the rough growing this much throughout the months of July and August. It is typically dry enough that the rough goes dormant in many areas, and therefore the frequency of mowing is reduced to approximately once per week. Growing too much grass is not a huge problem, however, when we have wet conditions with high temperatures plus high humidity, it can be deadly for our cool season grasses. Turf disease pressure drastically increases during this type of weather, and there is an assortment of pathogens that we will treat preventatively in all our short grass surfaces and some areas of our rough. Even with these applications, the abundant rainfall, heat, and humidity can break down these products quickly and reduce their efficacy. We are also unable to make these applications if the conditions are too wet or if rain is imminent. The reason for this is that the product must completely dry on the plant to be effective. Despite challenges, the golf course remains resilient, but the turf will be relieved to see cooler temperatures as we head into September.

The new irrigation installation is also going smoothly. This project is taking place on holes #13-17, and coinciding with the work that is being done around bunkers and greens. I expect the irrigation work to be ongoing through a good portion of September, as there are a few long stretches of mainline pipe to install, as well as a lot of sprinklers to install on a couple of very long fairways (13 & 15 specifically). This will be the final phase of the new irrigation system.

Our golf course improvement projects are well underway. The bunker and green surrounds renovations began on August 10 and is moving along very quickly. As of August 28, the construction (aside from the irrigation installation) has been fully completed on holes #14, #16, and #17. These areas will remain ground under repair 6

DIVOT FILLING

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS I frequently get asked about the best way to repair a divot taken out of the fairway or a tee. Whether you use sand from the bottle on the cart or choose to replace the chunk of grass, either way is helpful. If the grass breaks apart into multiple pieces, it is best to fill the divot with sand. If the grass is a good, healthy chunk, then you can definitely put it back into the divot as it came out (green side up). You don’t need to do both. Give the replaced piece of grass a heavy stamp with your foot and do the same with the sand to smooth it out.

Thank You, Dan! Thank You, Dan! September 8 is THANK A SUPER DAY! Thank you, Dan, for your leadership, and dedication to keeping Holly Hills course & grounds beautiful.

Our team will do all the tee divots four-five days a week, but feel free to fill them after you hit your shot. We no longer place divot buckets on the tees, as we have found that our seed/sand mixture will germinate and start growing in just a few days when incubated in these types of boxes. If the seed germinates and begins to grow in a plastic or wooden container, it is no longer useful to put in a divot. We do not add seed to the bottles on the carts for this reason; however, it is still helpful for divot recovery if it is a sand only mixture.

BUILDING MORE THAN A CLUB One of the things I enjoy most about my role is having the opportunity to meet members, hear your stories, and learn what makes Holly Hills special to you and your family. While many people initially join for golf, tennis, pickleball, swimming, dining, or social events, what keeps members engaged year after year is something much more meaningful. Friendships, traditions, and a sense of community are what make Holly Hills feel like home. As we continue to welcome new members to the club, I encourage you to introduce yourself when you see a new face around the clubhouse. A simple conversation, invitation to join a game, or welcoming smile can make all the difference in helping someone feel part of our community.

Couples Golf

For our newer members, please know that we are here to help make your transition into club life as seamless and enjoyable as possible. If you have questions about club programs, events, dining, golf, or simply want help getting connected with other members who share your interests, don't hesitate to reach out. My goal is to help every member feel comfortable, engaged, and at home at Holly Hills. I also want to thank our members who continue to share the Holly Hills experience with friends, family members, neighbors, and colleagues. As we look ahead to another exciting season of events, golf outings, family activities, and social gatherings, I encourage everyone to take advantage of all the club has to offer. Whether you're attending your first event or your hundredth, there is always an opportunity to make a new connection and create lasting memories.

GOLF UPDATE

HANDICAP COMMITTEE UPDATE Handicap Committee Update

One of the primary responsibilities of the Golf Professional Staff and the Handicap Committee is to help ensure that every member enjoys golf under fair and equitable conditions. Over the past several months, we have been working closely with the Handicap Committee to review handicap records and score posting activity in accordance with the USGA World Handicap System. Our objective is not to punish, embarrass, or single out any member. Rather, our goal is to educate, assist, and maintain the integrity of the handicap system so that every member competes on a level playing field. An accurate handicap benefits everyone and is essential to the success of our club tournaments and member competitions.

What Should Members Do?

Holly Hills Country Club follows the posting procedures established by the 2024 Revision of the USGA World Handicap System. To help maintain an accurate Handicap Index and ensure fair competition for everyone, we ask that all members do the following: •Post acceptable scores on the day they are played whenever possible. •Post scores hole-by-hole through the GHIN app or in the Golf Shop. •If your round is shortened, don't assume it can't be posted. Many incomplete rounds are still acceptable under the World Handicap System. •Rounds of 8 holes or fewer are not acceptable for posting. •For a 9-hole score to be acceptable, all 9 holes must be played. •When 18 holes are completed, an 18-hole score may be posted. •If you play 10–17 holes, post the holes you completed using the hole-by-hole method. GHIN creates a Score Differential from the holes you played and adds your expected Score Differential for the holes not played to produce an 18-hole score. For example, a 12-hole round is posted by entering holes 1–12 individually; the system calculates the remainder automatically. •If you are unsure whether a score should be posted, ask the Golf Shop. We are happy to help determine whether a round is acceptable, assist with posting, or designate the day as a “No Post” when appropriate.

When Not to Post

There are also occasions when a score should not be posted. Examples include rounds played alone, rounds on courses without a Course Rating and Slope Rating, rounds played during the inactive season, formats not acceptable for handicap purposes (such as scrambles), rounds played primarily for practice or instruction.

For example, playing multiple balls or accompanying and coaching a new or junior golfer, rounds where the Rules of Golf were not followed, or days the Golf Shop has designated as a “No Post” due to course conditions or other circumstances. If you are ever uncertain, our staff is always happy to help.

Handicap Committee Review Process

To promote accurate handicaps and fair competition, the Golf Professional Staff and Handicap Committee will follow a consistent review process when acceptable scores appear to be missing. Step 1 – Weekly Reminder. Each Tuesday, the Golf Professional Staff will review weekly play and send a friendly reminder email to members who may have an unposted acceptable score. In many cases there is a simple explanation, and we are happy to assist with posting, answer questions, or determine whether the round should be designated a “No Post.” Step 2 – Monthly Follow-Up. If there is no response or the record continues to show missing acceptable scores, a monthly follow-up will be sent to work with the member to keep their handicap record complete and accurate. Step 3 – Handicap Committee Meeting. If posting concerns continue, the member will be invited to meet with the Golf Professional Staff and Handicap Committee to better understand the situation, answer questions about posting procedures, and develop a plan moving forward. Step 4 – Club Competition Eligibility. If there is still no improvement after meeting with the Staff and Committee, the member may be deemed ineligible for Holly Hills club tournaments and handicapbased competitions until their posting record is brought into compliance. Step 5 – GHIN Handicap Privileges. As a final measure, if repeated efforts to resolve the issue are unsuccessful, the member's GHIN handicap privileges through Holly Hills Country Club may be suspended or removed in accordance with USGA Handicap Committee responsibilities. These steps are intended to ensure consistency, transparency, and fairness for all members while protecting the integrity of our competitions. Thank you for your continued commitment to the traditions of honesty, integrity, and sportsmanship that make golf unique. If you ever have questions about score posting, handicap procedures, or the World Handicap System, please stop by the Golf Shop or contact a member of our professional staff, we are always happy to help.
