It wasn't entirely a surprise that McLaren Vale's first-among-equals winery should have made this gorgeously succulent wine, but I couldn't help but consulting the thesaurus to be sure 'succulent' covered the field. Red Mill Spiced Rum (700ml)

The Red Mill SPICED Rum is all about being delicious. No angle, no twist on the classic, just a flavourful tropical spiced Rum based on Red Mill's fine barrels in White Bay. A blend of various Rums for the base, mainly ex-wine casks (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Bordeaux, Sherry) with some ex-Whiskey casks. This base Rum is then blended with the delicious Coconut Rum at around 4/1 ratio. This final blend then undergoes a gentle maceration of tasty elements, including Cinnamon, All Spice, Pineapple, Cacao, Vanilla and Hibiscus. The style is fragrant, exotic, easy drinking and just plain delicious. To truly appreciate spiced rum, add a few drops of water or drink it neat to appreciate its unique tastes. On a hot day a Highball (two parts spiced rum mixed with four parts ginger beer) makes a refreshing drink. This is a story about family, the history of Sydney, Rum and doing something that hasn’t been done before. Red Mill Rum, first bottled in 1933, now made entirely new again by the original founder’s great grandson.

By the time George “Bunny” Fesq developed Red Mill Rum in 1933, he was already the third generation to run his family wine & spirit merchant business. With an ear to the needs of the time, it was no surprise that the post-depression era required good value drinks. He thought Rum would be a useful addition to the agency brands he already sold to taverns across Sydney. The Rums were sourced by cask from the CSR refinery and distillery in Pyrmont.

After the second world war Red Mill flourished in the Sydney bars. It became the biggest selling overproof rum, selling over 300,000 bottles a year, peaking in the 1960s. Some may remember the iconic, “It’s Your Shout!” campaign that adorned buses and trains. In 1979 the time of Fesq’s Red Mill comes to a close, with the brand being sold to William Grant spirits business. It carried on for a few more years into the mid-1980s.

When David Fesq was planning his first collection of single-cask releases for his recently revived Red Mill Rum, he made a call few would ever be able to make. That was to Fraser McKinley, the brilliant winemaker behind cult Barossa brand Sami-Odi. His wines are rare and precious - and so is this rum, infused with dark fruit, chocolate and spice from its time in one of McKinley's old barrels. Australian drinking history in a glass. In 2020 the idea to regrow Red Mill is formed. The first batches of the new Red Mill Rum were distilled by David Fesq in a commercial offsite distillery in Robinvale. The first container of rare and unique barrels sourced from around the world arrived and were filled in 2021. These earliest casks included ex-Bourbon, Cognac, White & Red Bordeaux, Australian Pinot Noir and Oloroso Sherry barrels.

In 2024 Red Mill moves into its new home in White Bay, Sydney. Plans are made to bring the full production in house alongside the barrel hall of 300+ casks to create a must-see cellar door experience. Broadsheet says “this White Bay distillery experience is less about tasting a few spirits and more about stepping inside a living chapter of Australian maritime and distilling history – reimagined with fresh ambition and exceptional rum”. Acclaim for Red Mill rum has been swift in coming, highlighted by the Red Mill Rum Sami-Odi Cask being the highest rated spirit in the influential The Drinks Issue 2025, Nick Ryan, The Australian – a rum held in casks from cult Barossa brand Sami-Odi.

Kudos to Bunny Fesq’s great-grandson David Fesq who says “it’s a joy to be building again on this legacy”.

The source of this excellent wine is the Elderton Nuriootpa vineyard, with vines that are now up to 128 years of age. This is a typically powerful wine but with an elegance that comes with this very good vintage. The aromas show traces of blackcurrant, bay leaf and a little olive tapenade with a slightly oyster shell minerality. Sourced from David Materne's vineyard in Greenock - 1.6ha planted in 1988 on sandy loam over rich clay. This is the 20th consecutive release from this vineyard, matured in large format French oak (17% new) for 22 months. A wine in fine form from the very strong '24 vintage. Gorgeous macerated damson plum, black cherry and blueberry fruits over hints of Medina spice, pan juices, olive tapenade, some liminal crushed herbs, wildflowers, milk chocolate, gentle cedartones and a tendril of subtle ferrous interest. Well, I had a suspicion this wine was going to be pretty damn good coming from what was a wonderful season in the Barossa. And to say that it hasn't disappointed is a supreme understatement. It comes from a barrel selection just before bottling, so what you're getting is the best of the best. Highly scented aromas of red fruits and plum, with a little raspberry-strawberry combination. The palate is quite sublime. It's smooth, it's effortless, it's integrated, and it powers through to a sustained finish with so much ease. This is class and polish, and it's a wine that is so well-structured and put together now that you can certainly enjoy it in the short term. Sourced exclusively from the Cirillo family estate. In the glass, it reveals a deep ruby-crimson hue with striking brightness and vitality. The aromas are generous and immediately appealing, unfolding with layers of dark berries, ripe plum, violets, and subtle spice. The palate is supple, generous, and delicious, carrying vibrant blackberry and dark plum fruit across a flowing, textural mouthfeel. While there is unmistakable depth and quiet power, the wine remains restrained and finely balanced, avoiding heaviness in favour of grace and precision. This stunning young 2019 Grenache Ancestor vine, from the country's oldest vines for this variety delivers an almost perfect mix of pristine primary dark cherry and red licorice aromas lifted by layers of mountain herbs, red earth and meat spices with genuine concentration and focus. Young, compact and still a little shy, it has all the pieces in place with energetic flavours, beautiful composure and refinement yet with a firm base of gravelly tannins before gliding to a pristine finish of astounding length. The varietal flavours marry well with the texture and detail coming through on the palate, especially its fine, chalk-like acidity. A wave of tropical fruit, think passionfruit, feijoa, gooseberries and Tahitian limes rolls through with some sugar snaps and fresh herbs, particularly basil. This is juicy and tangy, and the slip of leesy goodness bolsters the palate. Alcohol: 13%.

Region: Margaret River Rating: 94/100 CC

Well well, I wonder what the 2023 Art Series Cabernet is going to be like if this is any indication. This is one third each of new, one year old and two year old oak. Black fruit, cherry, floral and bay leaf perfume, cocoa and baking spice. It's medium-bodied, plenty of flavour here, though it has a crispness to acidity and energy that's spot on, tobacco savouries, and the sweep of stony tannin is something of a highlight. The finish is fresh and long, tinged with black olive and dried herb, some juicy raspberry in the aftertaste. So excellent. Alcohol: 13.5%. Closure: screwcap. Drink: 20262034+. Price: $34. Region: Margaret River Rating: 94/100 C

This is unsurprisingly all class and one to jump on for the quality-to-price ratio. Nougat, chestnut and fine cedar mark a savoury beginning before an unfurling of white grapefruit, peach skin and dehydrated lime. Allusions of flint. Notes of brown spice and salted lemon emerge with air. It all clicks nicely into place, making for a really striking perfume. The palate is textural and full, with the nutty savouriness and fine cedar notes sitting forward before a cut of pithy white grapefruit and tangy lemon hold sway and pull it linear. This is very good, and at its price point it can boast complexity, structure, power and detail. Price: $44. Rating: 94/100. One of the most elegant Art Series wines to date, yet it still has plenty of detail and power, it just feels more composed. A whorl of mulberries and blackberries all spiced up with cedary oak and cinnamon, licorice root and nori. The more mid-weighted palate is very even, with beautifully judged cocoa powder-like tannins. The invigorating acidity lengthens out the finish. It's singing now yet will age gracefully. Bravo. Shiraz dominant, there is a dollop of both Viognier and Malbec (3% of each), in this stunning Margaret River Shiraz. 20% whole bunch and a total of eighteen months maturation in various formats of French oak. Deep magenta hue in quite the savoury style, we have notes of licorice, animal skins, dry herbs, blackcurrants, cloves and a hint of graphite. Beautifully structured, this is seamless and seductive. There is a line of fine acidity, all leading to quite a complex style. Such exemplary balance here with excellent length. Enjoy over the next ten to fifteen years. A superb Margaret River Shiraz. Winning the first ever Jimmy Watson Trophy in 1962, Metala had stood the test of time. In 1882, William Formby purchased the Metala estate. In 1981, 5th Generation Guy Adams took over the management of the estate. With a sincere appreciation of the family legacy, Guy, together with his wife Liz, began a 20-year long battle to return Metala to its original home. In 2022 the dream became a reality and Metala came home to Langhorne Creek and the family who planted and have nurtured the vines for more than 130 years. This is now entirely sourced from the Metala Vineyard which is home to the oldest familyowned cabernet vineyard in the world and the oldest Shiraz vineyards in Langhorne Creek. Angas & Bremer The Creek Red Blend 2022

Region: Langhorne Creek Rating: 92/100 C

Angas & Bremer takes its name from the two rivers revered as the heart and soul of the region, where vines were first planted over 150 years ago. Despite the region's long and distinguished history, Langhorne Creek is often regarded as Australia's best kept wine secret. It is wines like this that show why. A blend of Grenache (45%), Touriga Nacional (30%), 18% Malbec (18%), Graciano (5%) and Shiraz (2%). An exotic and entirely delicious display of lifted aromas of red cherries and orange blossom which combines seamlessly with flavours of raspberry and a hint of apricot.

Region: Langhorne Creek Rating: 95/100 C

Cabernet Sauvignon is "the special one" in Langhorne Creek, its pure varietal characters celebrated widely. You'll be hard pressed to find a better representative of it than this, judged the best Cabernet and finally overall Champion Wine at the 2025 Langhorne Creek regional wine show. It exudes the variety's classic cassis aromas in abundance and offers much more than just a pure berry fruit crush, pencil case cedar notes and wafts of bouquet garni providing savoury offsets that rebound in the palate as well. Better still, Cabernet often can be smacked a bit by its varietal tannin character, but not here, as a subtle and fine dusting in the finish raises this stylish, and crazily priced, example to a wine of elite class. An exquisite and beautiful example of Malbec. What strikes as astonishing is that it is a modestly priced wine and yet is festooned with gold and trophies. Not hard to see why. First released in 1974, this cabernet sauvignon has built a cult following. Its maker is a legendary figure in the wine industry having been Wolf Blass'right-hand man and credited for the string of trophies awarded to their wines in the mid 70s. Intense deep red. Extremely powerful nose of lifted chocolate, eucalypt and mint with very well balanced French oak in the background. The palate has characters on the nose carry through to the palate with great intensity. A big, rich and round palate with excellent French oak balance and soft tannin finish. A classic!

Well, guess what? It has. This is such a beautiful example of what Moss Wood Cabernet is all about. There's nothing big and brutish here. This is elegance. This is precision. This is brilliance. High-end florals on the nose with traces of violet, red currant, and then on the palate, that beautiful, restrained suppleness that deceived so many people in the early years of Moss Wood reveals itself, and yet as always, there's a deep and lingering intensity that persists through to an exceptionally long finish. I've tasted some truly wonderful Cabernets from Xanadu under this label over many years, but I have to say I've tasted none better than this. It is a simply wonderful example of Margaret River delivered with poise, power, and a certain panache. Captures the vintage really well with the power and yet subtle restraint that it's best known for. It's full-bodied but beautifully elegant. With an aroma of classically varietal blackcurrant, dark plums, and a slightly leafy bay leaf sort of character with a trace of minerally oyster shell, leading into a palate that has power and real poise. A mighty impressive example of why the 2018 vintage in WA has been so revered. One take of the aromas and you are immediately engaged with the dried herbs, cedar and bright blue and red fruits. Then the palate captures those characters and more with faint hints of graphite and light bay leaf. Will cellar for many years. Cellar: 15 years. Price: $40. Rating: 94/100.

As always with these guys, this wine is ridiculously good value. Coming from a wonderful vintage in Margaret River, the wine spent sixteen months maturing in French oak, 35% of which was new. I really can't think of a single reason why any lover of cracking Cabernet doesn't have several cases of this in their cellar. Deep maroon hue, this is intense and even slightly austere at this early stage, with good concentration. There is power here but also balance and length. The nose gives us notes of black fruits, cassis, smoked meats, dry herbs, graphite and bacon fat. There is good oak integration. A supple texture with serious length, this should drink beautifully for the next fifteen years. Drink: 2025-2040. Price: $28. Rating: 94/100.

Malbec this good at this price, really, it doesn't get any better. Although if {hidden winery} doesn't do great malbec, then no one does. At first, it appears all upfront fruit - black and satsuma plums, blackcurrants - but then savoury notes come through all spiced to the max with pepper, sumac and licorice, some roasted red capsicum, too. There are plentiful tannins, ripe and stretchy across the fuller-bodied palate, and it finishes convincingly. Distinctively and pleasingly varietal as much as an imprint of place and producer. This is surely already a contender for one of the best value wines of the year. From a superb vintage, this comes from a range of vineyards at Nuriootpa, Craneford and Greenock, with vines as old as 128 years. It spent two years maturing in a mix of French and American oak puncheons, mostly older ones. Dark purple, the nose is redolent with chocolate and mocha. Big and bold, ripe and rich, this is seamless and supple. Poised and taut in style, with bright acidity, fine balance and great length, it finishes with silky tannins. Love this and it is such great value for a wine which is so chock full of flavour. Ten to fifteen years without a hiccup. Price: $40. Rating: 94/100.

5. Hidden Label Coonawarra Cabernet Franc 2024 (KHL 2323)

This is such a beautiful example of this largely right bank variety working its magic in Coonawarra. It's immediately perfumed, with notes of red berry and violet, with a subtle red berry influence. The palate has a deep intensity, but there's also such a silky, satiny, textural component to the medium body. Everything is so beautifully balanced, with a seamless integration of oak, supporting those fine Coonawarra tannins and carrying the palate through to a super long finish. This is pure Coonawarra elegance. Drink: 2025-2040. Price: $40. Rating 96/100.

A wonderful vintage for the region, which comes through with all these wines. This fine Cabernet is an opaque purple. It is dominated by black fruits, along with blueberries, coffee beans, dry herbs, tobacco leaves and more, particularly hints of undergrowth. There is a supple texture with the wine finishing with fine, if slightly firm, tannins, decent length and good focus. An attractive Clare Cab which will drink well for the next six to ten years. Impenetrable deep ruby in colour. Powerful and tightly composed aromas of blackberry, cherry compote and black olive with a dusting of dried herbs and mahogany oak that is beautifully balanced. Richly flavoured and densely packed with blackberry flavours and immaculate shape building to a sustained finish of exceptional length. Structure here is the key, with ample firm yet fine tannins guaranteeing impressive cellaring potential. Drink 2031-2042.

The winery is a leader in organic and biodynamic viticulture with fruit for all wines sourced from their estate vineyards in McLaren Vale. Under it's makers label this is one of Australia's most popular red blends. Stunning value here. A blend of 55% Shiraz and 41% Grenache, with a further 4% Mataro, the wine spent nine months in French oak. Aromas of ripe red cherries, cranberries, and forest strawberries, notes of sage, thyme, and a touch of dried bay leaf. Hints of star anise, balsamic undertones, and earthy forest floor, cacao nib and cedar. Juicy red and bramble fruits from the Shiraz, and a bright, spicy core from the Grenache. Mataro adds savoury, smoky notes and fine-grained tannins. Can cellar for 10 years plus but why bother? Delicious. Kemenys

2. Hidden Label Flagship McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 (KHL 2505)

Region: McLaren Vale Rating: 96/100

Named in honour of the infamous no-nonsense New York detective, the {hidden winery} crew have gone similarly rogue (in a good way) with this Cabernet, employing the Appassimento method of harvesting the fruit then slowly drying out the berries on racks over several weeks to concentrate the aromas and flavours, and as they note, softening the usual varietal tannin coating. The wine is matured for 2 years in a fair bit of new French oak, before a critical barrel selection is made. The result is a unique expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, compacted aromatics become like powdered herb, part tarragon, part spearmint, part lavender, with flavours like sweet dried berries. The tannin feels quite fine and dusted. Fascinating and delicious in its own most individual way. Price: $105. Rating: 95/100.

Near black/ maroon with a dark magenta rim, the nose reveals aromas of black fruits, tobacco leaves, cloves, a touch of axle grease, chocolate, cassis, aniseed and blackberries. Brilliantly structured, the texture is sleek and seductive with succulent fruit throughout. The wine is very, very long and finishes with the silkiest of tannins. This is lovely for its restraint and approachability, which makes it very easy to drink. Violets and spice, raspberry leaf and freshly rolled tobacco with a hint of menthol. Barely medium bodied, this is finely tuned with sweet red berries, mulberries and cassis, a smidge of cedary oak. There's a certain elegance here, a softness to the palate, the tannins fine and feathery, acidity bright and the finish lingers. Gorgeous now and will offer more with age

Te Kahu Bordeaux Blend 2023

This is a great value entry point into the Bordeaux blends from Craggy Range. Sourced from the iconic Gimblett Gravels vineyard in Hawkes Bay. Predominantly Merlot, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Bright nose with notes of cedar, cassis and blackcurrant mingled with dried tobacco. The palate is very precise, revealing black fruit and violets with great energy. There is plenty of chocolate framing the tannins, and it has a fantastic structure. On reflection, a textbook example of a Bordeaux blend from the Gimblett Gravels with an excellent future ahead.

Here, the tannins have a finer grain, the fruit is more persistent and the package is far more integrated and seamless. With raspberry, iodine, crushed shells, nori, pressed flowers, new lead pencil, tobacco, bramble and cassis, it is magnificent. Raw cocoa and the gentle and subtle creep of game/gristle/blood and sweet marrow indicate its direction later in life. I love this wine. I think I write that every time I taste it. Rating: 98/100.

This is cabernet-driven wine from one of Margaret River's best producers that offers an excellent each way bet: drink now or cellar for a decade or more. It is a blend of 72% cabernet with the remainder of the blend made up of merlot, malbec and petit verdot. A wine of impeccable balance with classic currant/berry/plum notes allied to violet, dark chocolate and cedary oak characters. There is impressive structure here, but also bright acid that aid immediate accessibility. Concentrated but beguiling.

Finishes chalky firm and minerally. Archetypal Coonawarra Claret with superb vibrancy, and cabernet bloodlines. Deserves a year or more cellaring time to allow all the elements to unfold. A super season in Coonawarra has produced an outstanding example of this style. This is generous and intense, but delivers with that real Coonawarra elegance and poise that captures so much of the region and, in this case, a very good season. The colour is vibrant, with ready crimson tones. On the nose, you get a sort of ripe red fruit character which sits more in that cherry and pomegranate spectrum, sprinkled with a little pepperiness. The palate highlights Shiraz from a cooler climate, bursting with energy and life, with fine chalky tannins and well-managed oak, which is a combination of new and seasoned hogsheads and barriques, where it spent about 16 months. Supremely balanced and poised, with potential to cellar in the medium term. But this is such great drinking now. Drink: 2026-2036. Price: $45. Rating: 95/100.

This is the first vintage of this wine from vineyards along McBain Road in northern Coonawarra. Whether you're a claret drinker or not, it's impossible not to grin at the dense blackberries, two-tone mulberries and cherry skin. The sweetness of licorice allsorts makes an appearance, so too camp coals and red gum bark. The fruit is held in tandem with tensile acidity coated in fluffy tannins. It's chockablock with charm and built for modern drinking, with moderate alcohol and all the sweet tunes of nostalgia.

Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet 2021 - GIFT BOXED

Very deep, dark, impenetrable purple colour; a gorgeous fragrance of spicy superripe berries and a hint of licorice, super concentrated and almost essency. Traces of soy sauce and nori. The wine is highly concentrated on the palate; powerful, profound and rich, with masses of sweetly ripe berry fruit and no sign of herbal varietal touches. A profound and multi-dimensional cabernet that will richly reward long-term cellaring. It drinks superbly already but it would be sacrilege to open it before it's had more time to build the tertiary complexity that we know will come with time. Rating: 99/100.

Jacko was, in fact, Michael James, who worked for many years in Merrill's cellar. He was a bit of a character, and this is a wine that's full of character. It was a very good season, and this is a generous, full-bodied Shiraz with some lovely dense, chocolatey plummy notes and just a lift of peppery fruit for balance. Tannins have a slightly chalky, grainy feel to them. The oak is well-managed and not insignificant, but the fruit dominates and powers through to the finish. Touriga Nacional is Portugal's most celebrated native red grape that has thrived in the maritime climate of McLaren Vale. A lively red, this vinho do vale is made for immediate enjoyment. A bouquet of lifted red and blue fruits with a hint of Earl Grey. The palate is juicy, pure and bright with dense layers of ripe mixed berries, subtle spice complexity, fine tannins and a length that keeps on rolling. This wine could lay down for many years to come but we just can't see it lasting that long once tried!

This is so unmistakably peak McLaren Vale Shiraz in all its mannerisms. Imbued with a generous powdering of mocha creaminess threading around its black fruit core, there's something else going on here, an identifiable iron/blacksmithy character in the nasals, before spilling into a rich, generously fruited, mid-to-full bodied Shiraz with plenty of spice and sweetly supportive tannins. Lots to appreciate, a wine to go back and forth to sip after sip for ongoing intrigue, and with all its minutiae in play now, it's a terrific bet for future explorations in 5 to 10 to 20 years. Saldo Zinfandel 2022

The Prisoner Wine Company of Napa, California, was created and launched by winemaker Dave Phinney in 2000, with a single wine that he called The Prisoner. The Prisoner quickly became a phenomenon. In 2010, Phinney sold the Prisoner Wine Company but continued as a winemaker advisor and created a new cult red - Saldo. A blend of Zinfandel (78%), Petite Sirah (13%), Syrah (5%), Primitivo (3%), Pinot Noir (1%) from different Californian appellations: Dry Creek Valley, Lodi and the Sierra Nevada foothills. For so deep and dark and powerful wine, it is unexpectantly elegant. The palate is mouthwatering and smooth with a hint of chocolate. The finish is voluptuous with soft, velvety tannins. This will change your perception of Californian Zinfandel being too rustic.

I guess you could say it all started with Zinfandel for me. It was 1998 and with the ignorant bravado that only a twentyfive-year-old can possess, I decided to form Orin Swift Cellars. I bought two tons of Zinfandel and two years later made a wine called The Prisoner. I made that wine for the next eight years, and then in 2008 I sold the brand. I agreed not to make Zinfandel for eight years.

At first I liked the idea. Zinfandel is notoriously difficult. It ripens unevenly, it is prone to rot, and it often has very high alcohol. Taking a few years off sounded good. But, like a child who only wants to do what he or she is told not to, I began to plot my return.

The Prisoner Red Blend 2021

The Prisoner began as the creation of winemaker Dave Phinney in 2000. The Prisoner Wine Company based its entire brand mission on a single sketch from the 1800s drawn by Spanish artist Francisco de Goya. The sketch, which was given to Phinney as a gift from his parents, served as a "visual protest against the injustice and brutality of the Spanish War of Independence". When the prisoner was first released in 2000, it went viral before viral was a thing. Whilst Dave Phinney has moved on to create the cult brand Orin Swift, the Prisoner has grown to become the most recognised Nappa Valley red blend. The thing about all the best buildings and houses is that you never need to be told that an architect was involved. So too with wine; all the best wines have exquisite bone structure. In his 2025 vintage report Bruce Tyrrell proclaimed that "we are going to have some great Semillon and Chardonnay to sell particularly at the Hunter Valley level, and they will be a level above their price range" - and he was spot on. Sourced from a small selection of some of Tyrrell's top Semillon vineyards around the Hunter Valley. Most of the vineyards are dry grown and have an average vine age of 40 years. Interestingly, the wine spent a short amount of time on yeast lees to gain extra complexity and mouth feel. The nose is vibrant with an abundance of citrus fruits and floral elements. Taylors Estate Shiraz 2024

Region: Clare Valley Rating: 94/100CC

Taylors are one of Australia's great wine families. Their philosophy is "we rest on the principle that the finest wines are those made with the greatest dedication and care. Above all our imperative is to 'respect the fruit'" - an so it is evident with their Estate Shiraz. This has been Australia's go-to shiraz for so long and with good reason. Demand has meant that the fruit is now sourced from both Clare Valley and Limestone Coast but the quality has remained. A thoroughly delicious young Shiraz delivering so much for this price. It's generous but more in the medium bodied zone with plenty of juicy red berry fruits, plum and spice, along with subtle chocolate and savoury characters from the oak maturation. Pretty hard to beat when you're looking for an everyday wine.

The first Mount Trio wines were released in 1995 by accomplished WA winemaker Gavin Berry. Badged 'Great Southern' most of this Pinot was sourced from Mount Barker vineyards. Some of the parcels of fruit were from relatively young vines; they tend to have more delicate fruit characters so they are particularly well suited to this lighter, more approachable style of wine. The fruit from the older vines contributes more colour, palate weight and richness. Generous aromas of red fruits, particularly cranberry and pomegranate. It is bright and fresh with with flavours of dark cherry and red plum. It has a lovely light dry finish. An attractive, medium bodied pinot that can be enjoyed now with many foods.

The bargain, single vineyard pinot noir from Helen's Hill Estate. Destemmed and aged in seasoned barriques. A light crimson-ruby red. Offers up plenty of black cherry, raspberry, strawberry flavours on an elegant palate. Adding interest are some complex earthy herbal notes, hints of spice, firm but not over powering acidity and soft tannins. Single Vineyard Yarra Valley Pinot Noir at an unbeatable price.

This premium estate grown shiraz is from what is known as the Farm Block situated in front of this winery's McLaren Vale cellar door. Bright, vibrant nose showing red plum and olive nuances overlayed with subtle oak that provides an element of coffee mocha. Lovely rich. full, concentrated ripe shiraz palate with fine tannins that provide persistence and length. Wine critic Huon Hooke (The Real Review) concurs saying "full-bodied and rich, strong and concentrated black-plum flavours eventually dominating. 5. Hidden Label Hunter Valley Chardonnay 2025 (KHL 2189)

The maker of this Chardonnay is often sited as starting the Chardonnay boom in Australia. Their flagship Chardonnay was the first commercially produced in Australia (and still is today one of Australia's most famous Chardonnays). This is made to the same exacting standards. Sourced from a mixture of sites across the Pokolbin area including some of the maker's prized estate vineyards. The nose shows a great mixture of citrus, white stone fruit, some oak spice as well as just a hint of solids complexity. The palate is robust with great fruit intensity and texture through the mid-palate, with a soft acid finish. Extbook modern, medium-bodied Hunter Valley Chardonnay to be enjoyed with a variety of cuisines.

The winery is a leader in organic and biodynamic viticulture with fruit for all wines sourced from their estate vineyards in McLaren Vale. Under it's makers label this is one of Australia's most popular red blends. Stunning value here. A blend of 55% Shiraz and 41% Grenache, with a further 4% Mataro, the wine spent nine months in French oak. Aromas of ripe red cherries, cranberries, and forest strawberries, notes of sage, thyme, and a touch of dried bay leaf. Hints of star anise, balsamic undertones, and earthy forest floor, cacao nib and cedar. Juicy red and bramble fruits from the Shiraz, and a bright, spicy core from the Grenache. Mataro adds savoury, smoky notes and fine-grained tannins. Can cellar for 10 years plus but why bother? Delicious.

Set in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, Tumbarumba is one of the coldest viticulture regions on mainland Australia. Sourced from a famous, single vineyard. There's a delicacy and refinement that can only be achieved in a very cool climate. The apricot and nashi pear follow through on the palate alongside white flowers, lemon and subtle spice. Beautifully layered with a concentrated palate delivering a zesty and lingering textural mouthfeel. Top Gold at the Canberra and Region Wine Show 2025 (95 points).

Butler Crest Cabernet Sauvignon 2023

This caught our attention when it took out the trophy for Best Cabernet Sauvignon at the Melbourne Royal Wine Awards 2025 scoring 97 points with the judges. WA wine guru Ray Jordan says "this is a terrific value cabernet sourced from Wilyabrup. It's medium-bodied, but bursting with vibrant, ripe red fruits that are evidentimmediately. Subtle influences of dark chocolate and liqueur cherry add nuanced complexity, while the palate brings in slightly toasty oak and dark cocoa characters. Good tannins, well-managed oak, and a most complete wine". We feel that the trophy and 97 points were a bit much but agree with Ray that this terrific value cabernet from what, those in the know, are saying was a perfect vintage in the Margaret River.

From a single vineyard, Ridge Farm, located in the prestigious Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River (and part of the Butler Crest Estate). The Butler Crest name is inspired by the historic role of the "le Botiler" or wine bearer. In 1066, Herveius Walter accompanied William the Conqueror to England, serving as his trusted royal wine bearer. Fragrant aromas of white peach, lemon pith, and rioche. The palate is racy, with melon, citrus, and a faint grapefruit edge, supported by a touch of creaminess. Gold medal winner at the 2025 Cairns Wine Show scoring 95 points.

A sumptuously delicious expression of this famous Spanish variety from a very good year in the Barossa. Has all you want with young Tempranillo. This is very much a wine for drinking over the shorter term, while those vibrant, bright fruit flavours are clearly evident, but you could leave it a little time in the cellar. Typically a two-third one-third blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Such intensity and fragrance meets the nose, a foil of tropical fruits. The palate is light on its feet - buoyant, energetic and vibrant. Clear citrus fruits surround the palate, with gentle texture throughout the mid-palate. This leads to a fine, clean, tightly coiled and bright acid finish. Whether on a summer's afternoon or at an al-fresco lunch, this crisp, crunchy and refreshing white fits the bill as the go-to drink.

Cabernet Sauvignon is "the special one" in Langhorne Creek, its pure varietal characters celebrated widely. You'll be hard pressed to find a better representative of it than this, judged the best Cabernet and finally overall Champion Wine at the 2025 Langhorne Creek regional wine show. It exudes the variety's classic cassis aromas in abundance and offers much more than just a pure berry fruit crush, pencil case cedar notes and wafts of bouquet garni providing savoury offsets that rebound in the palate as well. Better still, Cabernet often can be smacked a bit by its varietal tannin character, but not here, as a subtle and fine dusting in the finish raises this stylish, and crazily priced, example to a wine of elite class. Bright ruby with vibrant clarity in the glass. The nose is fragrant and classically rustic, displaying lifted ripe red berry fruit, dark cherry and plum alongside earthy, savoury undertones, leather, dried herbs and spice. On the palate it delivers excellent depth and character with a distinct earthy, mineral drive. Ripe red berry fruits sit beautifully against savoury tannins, leather strap, spice and that signature Clare Valley minerality. Firm yet polished, with great balance, texture and a long, expressive finish that lingers with rustic charm and complexity. Tyrrell's Hunter Valley Semillon 2025

In his 2025 vintage report Bruce Tyrrell proclaimed that "we are going to have some great Semillon and Chardonnay to sell particularly at the Hunter Valley level, and they will be a level above their price range"and he was spot on. Sourced from a small selection of some of Tyrrell's top Semillon vineyards around the Hunter Valley. Most of the vineyards are dry grown and have an average vine age of 40 years. Interestingly, the wine spent a short amount of time on yeast lees to gain extra complexity and mouth feel. The nose is vibrant with an abundance of citrus fruits and floral elements. The palate is medium bodied, yet intense, with great length and a brisk acidity. Wow - is the finest Tyrrell's semillon vintage ever? If not it is certainly a landmark vintage.

Geoff Merrill Jacko's Shiraz 2018 Region: McLaren Vale Rating: 94/100 CC

Jacko was, in fact, Michael James, who worked for many years in Merrill's cellar. He was a bit of a character, and this is a wine that's full of character. It was a very good season, and this is a generous, full-bodied Shiraz with some lovely dense, chocolatey plummy notes and just a lift of peppery fruit for balance. Tannins have a slightly chalky, grainy feel to them. The oak is well-managed and not insignificant, but the fruit dominates and powers through to the finish. Terrific wine for drinking over the medium term. Drink: 2026-2034. Price: $30. Rating: 94/100.

A blast from the past. The Bowman family have been farming the beautiful area of the Hiltops for six generations and became the custodian of the neighbouring Barwang vineyard in 2021. Barwang is an iconic brand that means 'place of water'. Mature gnarled chardonnay vines on the Kelly's Block are some of the oldest in the district. An enticing wine brimming with aromas of peach blossom and melon, and bursting with attractive flavours of stone fruits overlaying a vibrant integrated palate that is enhanced by its acid frame and amplified by notes of light toasty oak and creamy lees. Pirramimma Hartfell Shiraz 2022

Region: McLaren Vale Rating: 96/100 CC

This comes from one of the oldest vineyards in McLaren Vale, planted more than 130 years ago. I've seen some terrific wines over the years from Pirramimma, but none better than this. This is a powerful, concentrated, yet refined and almost elegant example that captures the season and the vineyard so well. Intense aromas of plum, black cherry, spices, dark chocolate and even a little mocha. The palate intensity delves deep with the ripe, plummy blackberry notes emerging and complemented by some nice oak treatment. It's a wine that is so well put together now that current drinking wouldn't be a crime, and yet it has everything to handle extended cellaring time. Marvellous example of Shiraz from McLaren Vale. Drink: 2025-2045. Price: $150. Rating: 96/100.

Dexter Chardonnay 2024

Region: Mornington Peninsula Rating: 95/100 C

I love how unforced this chardonnay is. I love the way its texture, which is quite plush, feels as though it's a part of the wine rather than an extra. I also love the fact that flavour-wise we're in pure stonefruit territory, sans citrus. The oak in play is both creamy and smoky, almost bacon-like, and the finish has a tautness but a slight one. A small firecracker, Tom Thumb-like, goes off on the finish, adding an extra crack of complexities, but again, nothing overt. It's elegant, generous and honed at once. This vineyard, and winemaker, just keep putting out the hits. Alcohol: 13%.

Leeuwin Estate, one of the founding wineries in the Margaret River region of Western Australia, is a family producer with an international reputation for creating wines ranking alongside the world's finest. Whilst Margaret River is famous for its Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blends, in recent times straight varietal Sauvignon Blanc has soared in popularity (few better than the Leeuwin Art Series). Intensely aromatic and opening with jasmine and kaffir lime florals, the nose is layered over vibrant citrus, guava and subtle notes of pistachio, almond and cardamom. A Classic style from the oldest vineyards in Polish Hill River, planted by John and Pat Wilson in the 1970's. Its miniscule yields typically produce a wine rich in citrus fruits within a steely structure, tight with lots of minerality. Lime and citrus aromas leap out of the glass trailed by some green apple, hints of orange rind, wet steel and chalky mineral notes. Several clones of pinot noir from many blocks on the estate vineyard were picked over a two-week period. All batches were destemmed and hand plunged in small open top fermenters. The wine was matured for 10 months in French oak (25% new). Deep colour in pinot terms and the palate duly delivers. The palate has fantastic black cherry and plum fruit intensity, vibrant acidity and fine silky tannins. The finish lingers. A fine example of cool-climate Tasmanian pinot noir. Would match perfectly with game meats such as quail.

This fruit driven Pinot Noir has a medium weight and plush tannin structure paired with a backbone of very fine tannins and acidity. Nick Glaetzer has had a dream run since moving to Tasmania, winning a stack of awards. It's hard to find affordable quality Tassie pinot but here is one. Bright blue fruit and savoury spice aromas continue to a full flavoured palate of fresh mixed red berries. Silky tannins and integrated acid balances and lengthens the delicious finish. Wine critic Campbell Mattinson says that "this is an impressive wine, from an impressive producer. This pinot noir is blessed as much with confidence as it is with length, its sour-smoky fruits littered with sweet herb and orange rind notes, a whisper of reduction not hurting matters at all. A dry, structural, fruit-pulsed finish makes for a beautiful exit. Quality and value are both on offer here."

3. Secret Label Tasmanian Pinot Noir 2025 (KSL 4431)

I tasted this alongside a far higher priced pinot noir (double the price in fact) and this wine won the day by a margin. This is a ripper of a Pinot Noir. It's cherried and sinewy and drifted with autumn leaf notes, and it has a touch of satin to its texture too. An impressively fragrant and delicious amalgam of pinot noir sourced from across the breadth of Tasmania - East Coast, Derwent Valley, Coal River Valley, Huon Valley and Pipers River. Again, it's a beautifully perfumed wine with pure red cherry, red plum and raspberry fruits along with hints of dried cranberry, star anise, citrus blossom, dried meats, amaro, dried citrus rind and crushed rock. Airy and showing plenty of detail, with a fine, minerally line and abundant energy. All in all, a wonderfully composed snapshot of Tasmanian subregions. Alcohol: 14%. Closure: screwcap.
