This release contains a small inclusion of matured Grange - a commemorative bottling to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Grange, will no doubt stimulate plenty of interest and debate among those who follow the Penfolds story. The wine is essentially an homage to Grange without being Grange, an unusual yet imaginative way of celebrating a significant milestone. But despite the reverential touch points that surrounds this release, the wine does deliver the Penfolds red wine experience in spades. Deep crimson. Fresh black cherry, dark chocolate, chinotto aromas with roasted walnut notes. Well concentrated black cherry pastille, blackberry, praline flavours, fine chocolaty/ gravelly textures, very good mid palate volume and underlying roasted walnut, hint marzipan notes. Finishes chocolaty/ velvety and long. A classical Penfolds release with ample dark berry fruits, lovely volume and generosity. 12 months maturation in 17% new American and 83% seasoned French oak hogsheads. Smoke, graphite, garrigue herbs, class. This is one for the ages. It's a perfect combination of coolness and warmth, herbs and sweet curranty fruit, integration of vanillin oak and wide, long formations of tannin. Guerilla warfare maybe not, but this wine would win an old school war, it's so ordered and strong and disciplined and mighty. The '21 Grange was undoubtedly a hard act to follow, but here we see a '22 that is up for the challenge. Yes, there is an underlying power, the kind you expect from sourcing fruit from the big three - Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra - in what was essentially a cool vintage. But there is also a subtle elegance and moments when the lilt and carry of fine spices brings notes more akin to syrah than shiraz. The rise of blue fruits amid blackberries, cassis, black cherry sits comfortably with savoury leather and woodsmoke, roasted coffee, black olive, liquorice, dark chocolate, pepperberry and a lifted and arresting, aromatic spiciness. The palate offers a deep richness and plenty of flesh framed in firm, fine tannins - sturdy but not aggressively so. Sustained power meets a rising complex elegance. 97% shiraz/3% cabernet sauvignon. The Penfolds Reserve Bin A Chardonnay has been in fine form in recent years, and the new release continues that theme. Pale straw with a slight green tinge to the edge and aromas of white peach, nectarine and citrus fruits on a base of grilled cashew, soft spice, vanillin oak, clover blossom, lemon zest, crushed minerals, almond butter and a wisp of flint and almond paste. Layered, complex and textural. The flavours draw out impressively on the palate, with a taut, lacy seam of acidity providing ample clarity and velocity as it travels. A very strong release for this classic Australian wine with a strong cellaring pedigree. Deep crimson in the glass with a purple edge and fruit tones of black cherry, satsuma plum, blueberry, and blackberry. Hints of brown spice, minerals, crushed herbs, tobacco leaf, dark chocolate-dipped cherries, black tea, roast meats and earth. There's a succulence and intensity to this year's release that is infectious; those enticing characters slowly shape-shift into something more savoury and vital at its core. A blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon and 47% Shiraz, showcasing the creme de la creme of South Australia, with fruit sourced from vineyards across Coonawarra, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Padthaway. It's quite a restrained little number. The Cabernet hasn't yet come to show itself here, but there's no rush. The gamut of dark fruit is tucked underneath savoury and umami elements, Mediterranean herbs and fading violets. There is plenty of purpose, future and drive, with the big structure still dominating the narrative. In fact, it's quite tight through the midpalate. It needs time, no doubt about that. The fruit for this fine Riesling comes from a range of vineyards across the Clare Valley, all estate. Yet another wine showing that despite warmer and drier conditions, 2025 is looking like an excellent vintage with some serious longevity. Transparent straw in colour, this is pristine, poised and taut. A classic Clare Valley Riesling. Lovely notes of florals and limes on the nose, with citrus, grapefruit and river stones. Has some serious persistence and an appealing touch of bitey acidity on the finish. It will easily handle twelve to fifteen years in the celler but is very attractive already. Drink by: 2025-2040. Set in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, Tumbarumba is one of the coldest viticulture regions on mainland Australia. Sourced from a famous, single vineyard. There's a delicacy and refinement that can only be achieved in a very cool climate. The apricot and nashi pear follow through on the palate alongside white flowers, lemon and subtle spice. Beautifully layered with a concentrated palate delivering a zesty and lingering textural mouthfeel. Top Gold at the Canberra and Region Wine Show 2025 (95 points). Kemenys

The palate is medium-bodied and finely textured, delivering fruit of white peach and grapefruit supported by crisp acidity. A flinty mineral line and gentle creaminess build through the mid-palate, finishing long and persistent. A polished Chardonnay with texture, precision and balance. Drink: now to 2030. Rating: 95/100. This comes from HVD young vine (40 years old) and Army Block on Mistletoe Lane (30-40 years old). Very aromatic and floral, slight cut fennel, lemongrass, lime, white peach. Tight and flinty, pure acidity, feels and tastes great, a little bit powdery in texture, and finishes long with plenty lime and Disprin flavour. There's a succulence and richness to this wine, though it keeps itself trim and classic all the same. A top release, and it's so delicious now, you don't really need to wait (though you could). It's a toss up between 93 and 94 points, though I'm going for the latter as it's just so tasty. Alcohol: 10.4%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Aug 2025. Drink: 2025-2035. Price: $28. Rating: 94/100. This boutique winery is considered to be (along with Shaw + Smith) one of the best producers of elegant, award-winning cool climate wines in the Adelaide Hills. It should be no surprise that their chardonnay is so highly regarded as their winemaker used to be the chief winemaker at Shaw + Smith. Tantalising aromas of jasmine and ripe lemon but with a round, velvety structure. The palate showcases crisp, mouth-watering flavours of grapefruit, apricot, and white peach, finishing with lingering, crisp minerality. Drinking beautifully now but will continue to evolve with careful cellaring. This is a bargain at its cellar door price of $30, so our price of only $15 is stupendous value. Kemenys

From a magnificent Estate in Tasmania's Coal River Valley, this distinctive dry riesling is beautifully expressive of its cool-climate origins. Pale straw with green flashes, the bouquet lifts with vibrant citrus blossom, musk, and a hint of jasmine. The palate is vital with crisp notes of lime, green apple, and tangy yuzu, complemented by layers of mandarin and a subtle floral undertone. Refreshing acidity and pure minerality provide tension and drive, while a touch of honeysuckle lingers on the finish. Enjoy now with crab cakes, ceviche or other seafood. Region: Barossa Valley Rating: 95/100 This is surely already a contender for one of the best value wines of the year. From a superb vintage, this comes from a range of vineyards at Nuriootpa, Craneford and Greenock, with vines as old as 128 years. It spent two years maturing in a mix of French and American oak puncheons, mostly older ones. Dark purple, the nose is redolent with chocolate and mocha. Big and bold, ripe and rich, this is seamless and supple. Poised and taut in style, with bright acidity, fine balance and great length, it finishes with silky tannins. Love this and it is such great value for a wine which is so chock full of flavour. Ten to fifteen years without a hiccup. Price: $40. Rating: 94/100.

Region: Hilltops Rating: 95/100 The producer is acknowledged as the flagship Hilltops winery, and one of the rising stars of top-end Australian wine. A James Halliday 5 star rated winery, and ranked among the most prolific award-winners on the major Australian and international wine show circuits, having won well over 100 medals and trophies since 2009. This has classic blackcurrant and plum flavours with savoury dark chocolate, green olive, spice, and subtle leafy notes. Impeccably structured cabernet sauvignon with firm, fine-grained tannins. Drinking very well now and will cellar well for at least a decade.

A 100% Shiraz Rosé, harvested at a specifically early stage of ripeness to fit and deliver a pleasingly unique depth and texture for a Rosé style wine. Glossy pink with blueish sheen, then aromas reflecting the colour - rose petal and pale strawberry - before washing into a refreshing palate that suggests more of the same plus watermelon juiciness. The extras here are about a lightly weighted, subtle grip in the palate, and Shiraz motivated white peppery spice throughout. A more complex Rosé wine that is most suited to join a summery luncheon table. Date tasted: January 2025. Price: $26. Rating: 95/100.

Malbec this good at this price, really, it doesn't get any better. Although if {hidden winery} doesn't do great malbec, then no one does. At first, it appears all upfront fruit - black and satsuma plums, blackcurrants - but then savoury notes come through all spiced to the max with pepper, sumac and licorice, some roasted red capsicum, too. There are plentiful tannins, ripe and stretchy across the fuller-bodied palate, and it finishes convincingly. Distinctively and pleasingly varietal as much as an imprint of place and producer. Powerful and tightly composed aromas of blackberry, cherry compote and black olive with a dusting of dried herbs and mahogany oak that is beautifully balanced. Richly flavoured and densely packed with blackberry flavours and immaculate shape building to a sustained finish of exceptional length. Structure here is the key, with ample firm yet fine tannins guaranteeing impressive cellaring potential. Drink 2031-2042. Price: $28. Rating: 96/100.

Hidden Label McLaren Vale Shiraz Grenache 2023 (KHL 1458) Region: McLaren Vale Rating: 95/100 The winery is a leader in organic and biodynamic viticulture with fruit for all wines sourced from their estate vineyards in McLaren Vale. Under it's makers label this is one of Australia's most popular red blends. Stunning value here. A blend of 55% Shiraz and 41% Grenache, with a further 4% Mataro, the wine spent nine months in French oak. Aromas of ripe red cherries, cranberries, and forest strawberries, notes of sage, thyme, and a touch of dried bay leaf. Hints of star anise, balsamic undertones, and earthy forest floor, cacao nib and cedar. Juicy red and bramble fruits from the Shiraz, and a bright, spicy core from the Grenache. Mataro adds savoury, smoky notes and fine-grained tannins. Can cellar for 10 years plus but why bother? Delicious.

The selection of the grapes grown organically from the most celebrated vine parcels, the vinification techniques which enhance its typicity and the prestigious bottle make Conte Hugues the symbolic wine of Rapitala (Sicily). The nose opens with ample fruity sensations, typical of the grape variety, with apple, peach and banana in evidence, combined with slight salty puffs and sweet tones of vanilla and butter. The taste is soft and enveloping, structured and rich, with a long and persistent finish in the wake of juicy Sicilian citrus fruits. Tastings of this wine are sporadic for me, unlike most of the other wines. It's from HVD, 1984 and 2003 plantings. Chris Tyrrell is very enthusiastic about the 2025 Hunter Valley vintage, as are many, as am I. White peach, lime, almond, a little biscuit spice oak, fennel, a slight struck match, and lovely perfume here too, which seems to be something of a signature of the vintage. Juicy, fresh, grapefruit and pear, toasted hazelnuts, bright acidity, a flinty grip, long and lively to close. It's the best Estate Grown I can recall. Alcohol: 13%. Closure: screwcap. Sourced from the iconic Gimblett Gravels vineyard in Hawke's Bay. Te Kahu embodies the essence of a Bordeaux-style "vineyard blend", reflecting planting percentages of the vineyard with a Merlot-dominant composition (81%) followed by Cabernet Sauvignon (11%) and Cabernet Franc (8%). Ruby red in colour, with notes of juicy red fruits and a savoury undertone. The aromatics leap from the glass offering freshly plucked raspberries and black cherry, amidst blackcurrant leaves, violets and charred spices. These characters follow through to the palate where they are met with a moreish cocoa powder tannin, along with hints of dried tobacco and cedar. This is a wine lover's sauvignon blanc. Grown on the lower terrace at Te Muna Road, this quality sauvignon blanc has a unique level of texture and complexity. The cooler climate of Martinborough ensures the wine is aromatic with steely minerality while the rocky soils give intensity of the fruit. Aromas of passionfruit pulp interwoven with kaffir lime leaf. The palate is taut, linear and savoury. The finish is almost saline and leaves the drinker reaching for the second glass. The name, `Aroha' is Maori for love. And it is simply impossible not to love this wine. From the brilliant 2024 vintage. purple/blue hue, the nose offers a wonderful array of aromas, weaving through cherries, truffles, violets, wild raspberries, leaf litter and notes of freshly baked blackberry pie, just emerging from the oven. We are already seeing some early complexity and, no doubt, that will increase enormously over the coming years. The structure is seamless, the balance impeccable, and the concentration beautifully defined. A wine of focus and energy with great length through to satiny tannins on a lingering finish. The Folonari family has been making wine in Tuscany for eight generations, with brothers Ambrogio and Giovanni Folonari now at the helm. Since 2001, their smallest estate, Tenuta La Fuga, has been producing finely judged Sangiovese from just 9.8 hectares of vineyards in historic Camigliano, southwest of Montalcino. With its fossil-rich soils, influence from the Tyrrhenian Sea and the slopes of Monte Amiata, it is an exceptional site for Brunello.

La Tenuta La Fuga, owned by Folabari since 2001, is the smallest of the family estates with 9.8 hectares of vineyards and about 2 hectares of olive grove. Rosso di Montalcino is made from sangiovese grapes grown on only one hectare of vineyard located in the youngest parcel of Tenuta la Fuga. The short aging in seasoned oak barrels of around 6 months gives life to an expression of Sangiovese enhanced by a generous fruity and floral bouquet with spiced notes. One trophy we are always particularly interested in is the Leslie Kemeny Memorial Perpetual Trophy for Best Rosé at the Sydney Royal Wine Show. It honours the late Leslie Kemeny, a postwar migrant from Budapest who established the L&E Kemeny Delicatessen in Bondi in 1960. Together with his wife Emma and their sons, they built that business into Kemenys - now one of Australia's best-known independent liquor merchants. The trophy went to Jacob's Creek Le Petit Rosé 2026, scoring 95 points. Jacob's Creek has clearly mastered this style having won multiple trophies and gold for the prior vintage. It's also tightly focused in the acidity department with a firm, steely backbone well in place. There is plenty of room for further ageing with this wine, it is remarkably youthful with a core of citrus, baked apple, spice and pear and sweet herbals, but little sign as yet of secondary development such as notes of honey and toast. The test of a good vineyard is often how well it performs in challenging years, and 2025 was certainly a challenging one. Yet the wine has emerged as something of a triumph. It's a Clare Valley wine and produced with 100% free-run juice, then kept on lees for about three months, introducing a level of texture to the keenly edged palate. The perfumed mix of lemons and lime is evident immediately, and then the palate displays that subtle tension through the acid and a fine minerality that extends through to the finish. Mr Mick is named after KH (Mr Mick) Knappstein, a legend within the Australian winemaking industry. His last apprentice, local winemaker Tim Adams continues his legacy. In the late 1960's Clare Valley winemakers championed a product know as "Bin 5" Riesling. The wine was rich in the mid palate, with low levels of residual sugar, and notably less acidity than its partner the "Bin 7". A Cabernet Shiraz blend which usually sits around 70/30%, maturation is normally for around half a year and the wine does not encounter much oak at all. It is just the beautiful Coonawarra fruit to the fore. Dark plum/maroon with a magenta rim, this vintage is dominated by delightful red fruit notes. A supple texture, the wine is beautifully balanced and well-structured with excellent length through to silky tannins. There is energy and freshness to this wine. Made to the same high standards as their flagship shiraz (which is a regional icon). Vibrant purple colour, with a lifted nose showing bright red fruits and confectionery spice. The palate is medium bodied with good depth of flavour yet still lively and fresh. Soft, savoury tannins and a crunchy acidity adds to the wines complexity. This single vineyard savvy showcases Mount Barker's cool climate. Very pale in the glass. The nose is intricate with so much go: Guava, citrus blossom, passion flower and a touch of makrut lime, it just keeps giving the longer it sits in the glass. Full of flavour with delicate tropical fruits and hints of honey dew melon. Beautiful fruit weight gives volume without heaviness, a clean linear acidity and a seamless mouthfeel. The maker of this Chardonnay is often sited as starting the Chardonnay boom in Australia. Their flagship Chardonnay was the first commercially produced in Australia (and still is today one of Australia's most famous Chardonnays). This is made to the same exacting standards. Sourced from a mixture of sites across the Pokolbin area including some of the maker's prized estate vineyards. The nose shows a great mixture of citrus, white stone fruit, some oak spice as well as just a hint of solids complexity. The palate is robust with great fruit intensity and texture through the midpalate, with a soft acid finish. Yet another wine showing that despite warmer and drier conditions, 2025 is looking like an excellent vintage with some serious longevity. Transparent straw in colour, this is pristine, poised and taut. A classic Clare Valley Riesling. Lovely notes of florals and limes on the nose, with citrus, grapefruit and river stones. Has some serious persistence and an appealing touch of bitey acidity on the finish. It will easily handle twelve to fifteen years in the seller but is very attractive already. Drink by: 2025-2040. This caught our attention when it took out the trophy for Best Cabernet Sauvignon at the Melbourne Royal Wine Awards 2025 scoring 97 points with the judges. WA wine guru Ray Jordan says "this is a terrific value cabernet sourced from Wilyabrup. It's medium-bodied, but bursting with vibrant, ripe red fruits that are evident immediately. Subtle influences of dark chocolate and liqueur cherry add nuanced complexity, while the palate brings in slightly toasty oak and dark cocoa characters. Good tannins, well-managed oak, and a most complete wine". We feel that the trophy and 97 points were a bit much but agree with Ray that this terrific value cabernet from what, those in the know, are saying was a perfect vintage in the Margaret River. From the estate's 1946-planted bush vines. Half whole berries, half crushed, with gentle pump overs and extended maceration on some parcels up to seven months; matured in older French puncheons, foudre, ceramic eggs and amphorae. This is quite a different wine to the 2022. That's a tale of two seasons. Both cool, but the buttress of natural tannin in the 2022 is commanding and it is more compressed, needing time. This is prettily lifted, with cherry, cranberry, rosehip, dried orange peel, wild raspberry and red florals. It's a gloriously fine and elegant expression of this cuvee, but it has tannic drive, line and length, savouriness, flavour depth and detail. Excellent. Alcohol: 14%. Closure: screwcap. 2027 Grenache of the Year. From Block 30, planted in 1946 by Frederick Smart and his son Bernard, barely in his teens. All in 675L ceramic eggs with four months on skins. The '23s were pale, elegant and riveting. The '24 season was warmer, but the lineage of elegance and medium-bodied finesse continues. This is up there with the best Ovitellis, so fragrant and savoury, so much more enchanting on day two, and even more on days three and four. Dried cranberry and red cherry, pomegranate, dehydrated and ground orange peel, pressed and fresh wildflowers. The nose is mesmerising, swirling with rose, musk, wild fennel and medina spice, heady with exotica. Transparent, nothing heavy or sweet, just such poise, such harmony, nothing out of place, yet nothing forced or over polished.
