SHOULD YOU PUT YOUR USED BUYING CLAWS INTO A LWB PUMA?
Launched in late 2007, nominal 165hp to 210hp long wheelbase Case IH Puma tractors were initially only offered with a powershift transmission, continuously variable CVX variants spanning a nominal 195hp to 225hp arriving in 2009. Current LWB Puma tractors now cover a nominal 185hp to 260hp, but apart from power, what other changes do used buyers need to consider?

Comment: Earlier models than this now getting harder to find in the UK. Common for roofs to fade pink. Weight pack. Mechanical remotes. Base spec. CVX in good order with high spec command premium of up to £10,000.
Price point: From £25,000 to £35,500
The original Puma LWB line up comprised 165, 180, 195 and 210 models at launch in 2007, all with a full powershift transmission. Powered by a variant of the now well-established FTP 6.7 litre six-cylinder engine, these first gen models met Stage IIIa emission regs. In 2009, the range was expanded to include three CVT transmission Puma CVX models, the 195 CVX, 210 CVX and CVT only 225 CVX.
Stage IIIb emission regs arrived in in 2011, with the same FTP engine family now equipped with an SCR exhaust system and the need for Ad-Blue. Nominal power outputs, again indicated by the model number, saw a slight hike, the range now being made up of the 170, 185, 200 and 215, with a choice of powershift or CVT transmission, with a range topping CVT transmission only CVX 230.
Stage IV arrived for the 2016 model year, model numbers changing to 185, 200, 220 again reflecting a hike in power, with the CVX variants now including a range topping

Comment: If you can find a ‘first generation’ CVX tractor, there is every chance it will have had several owners but these models can make a sound buy for those doing low hours. A range topper in its day, with a decent spec. Do not expect modern guidance ready features. Increasingly hard to find sound examples. Prices can be high.

CVX 240. A quick way to these Stage IV tractors is the cab roof, this adopting a ‘wavy’ design.
It was all change again in 2020 with the introduction of Stage V interim emission regs. The model numbers stayed the same this time, as did nominal power ratings, with a raft of detail changes made to include a move to 750 and 1,500 service intervals, up from the 600 and 1,200 hours of previous models.
Stage V final arrived for 2021, with these tractors getting a new, and still current, bonnet design. Again, the model numbers stayed the same up until 2023 when the CVX 240 was replaced by the current range topper, the CVX 260. This and all CVX models were the first Puma to be fitted with the latest cab, the design also being adopted by Multicontroller versions launched mid-2023.
This whistle stop outline is the easy bit. Delve deeper, and there have been a whole raft of developments made to these tractors over the last 17 years.

Comment: Case IH dealers will retail sound tractors like this, strong demand for low hour examples typically seeing them sold before they are put out for retail sale. Accuguide ready. CVT 50km/hr transmission. Pneumatic trailer brakes. Full ISOBUS ready. Price dependent upon condition and service history. Good tyres can add a big premium.

GOOD TO KNOW?
• CVX models proven dependability can make even high hour examples with service history a sound buy
• Noticeable difference between Stage IV and Stage V tractors in refinement
• Early Stage III tractors becoming harder to find in the UK, with good examples selling for strong money. Be careful!
• Think tyres. Big 42in 710 rear rubber popular but a 38in 650 will be a lot less costly to renew

Used buyer expectations have risen too. Case IH dealers remain the best source of more recent Puma models, with more money spent upon bringing a used tractor up to an increasingly demanding retail standard.
Older models are also sought after. Third party tractor dealers, private sales and auctions all see strong demand for a sound model. Those after a more affordable

tractor in the 175hp plus power bracket will almost certainly have a LWB Puma on their buying radar, with values having hardened over the past few years.
What helps is that there is strong parts and service support available to used buyers, a point to note if you are considering models at the entry level. The flip side to this is that a sound, well maintained early model can fetch more now than it would have done, pro-rata, a few years ago. Those who are covering more modest hours and are not using the
In line with emission changes, the cooling packages on Puma tractors have changed to cope with higher working temperatures. Check the radiators and cooling fan, optional reversible units now considered a must when using front mounted kit.
WHAT’S USED
A tractor listed as offering a front linkage will need a spec check, electrics, remote valves and a pto not necessarily coming as part of the package. Retro upgrades can be costly.
Entry level ‘100’ Multicontroller tractors will have halogen headlights, the LED units on CVX models delivering much enhanced lighting.
tractor intensively are likely to hang onto them too. If you want the best, particularly a higher powered CVX tractor, you are going to have to work harder to source one and perhaps have to bust your buying budget too.
FOCUS ON THE MUST HAVE FEATURES
As there is no such thing as a typical used buyer, it is down to individual businesses to establish key buying priorities. A decade ago CVX transmission tractors were becoming more popular but powershift tractors then made up the bulk of used finds. It is the CVT ‘box that most want these days.
The range topping Puma 225/230/240 models have sold strongly but not in all regions of the UK or in Ireland. The nominal 220hp 220 CVX, for example, has gained a following from those switching tractor brands. Powershift tractors may have 40km/hr or 50km/hr 19-speed box, the 18-speed option being a less common
spec choice. Current 260 CVX models easily top 50kph at an engine speed s as low as 1,500rpm. Earlier Puma models cannot necessarily run at these low engine speeds, but as a rule a CVT model will do better on fuel than a powershift alternative.
Key easy spec spot checks will include tyre size, front linkage, front pto, bar or flange rear axles, trailer air brakes as well as cab packages covering cab seat fitted and climate control. Often missed are the number of front and rear remote valves and if a tractor is fitted with mid-mount valves to ease fitting a loader. Next consider if the tractor has the right ISOBUS you need and if it is guidance ready or has a system already in place. A tractor from 2015 can have trailer ABS as an option. If you supply a Case IH dealer or used tractor specialist with a list of must have features, they may be able to source a tractor for you and save a lot of legwork.
NOTE: Dealer installed accessories, such as additional spools, are available as a

Buying privately or at auction? If a tractor is nearly right it is still not completely right. Puma tractors are popular, so there is bound to be one out there that will meet your needs. It just takes patience. This is all obvious but when you are looking for a used buy it is all too easy to miss a feature you need when everything else fits the bill.
Tractors coming in at the end of what is now a more typical five-year finance package are particularly sought after as these will be likely to have been dealer serviced from new. If you are looking ahead, put your name down with your local dealer so you are the first to know when a tractor is coming in.
NOTE: Case IH literature currently lists powershift models as Puma Multicontroller, CVT tractors as Puma CVX. The bonnet decal on Stage V models will not indicate to the transmission fitted, this detail migrating to the cab door glass. Always check. >>
WHAT’S USED
Range topping Stage IIIb Puma 230 CVX with twin sheet front cab glass and ‘modest’ work lights now feels dated. Later Stage V models will have better lighting, even in base spec, with the wiper blade clearing a far greater screen area.
START FROM THE BASICS – POWER
A Puma’s model number is a guide to the tractor’s maximum power. Extra Power becomes available when ground speeds exceed 0.5km/hr with the pto engaged or 15km/hr in transport. To put this into context, the original Puma 180 powershift in our DLG power test in 2008 developed 161.6hp/120.5kW at its 2,000rpm rated speed, this climbing to 183.6hp/136.9kW at 1,900rpm. When Extra Power kicked in, measured power climbed to 192.6hp/143.6kW and 216.7hp/161.6kW.
The same tests carried out in 2011 saw a Puma CVX 230 deliver 197hp/145kW at
the pto at rated speed, the maximum with extra power coming in at 240hp/177kW.
A Puma 220 Multicontroller (powershift) model in 2019 produced 224hp/167kW at rated speed at the pto, boosted Extra Power adding around 20hp/15kW.
At 1,800rpm, measured peak power was just shy of 239hp/178kW.
Take a look at Puma LWB tractor tests and you will note they deliver the power it says on the bonnet with extra power further boosting performance. FTP engines are among the better performers when it comes to fuel consumption too, the more so when hitched to the CVX transmission.
Despite meeting tougher emission regs, Case IH have managed to keep the exhaust stacks relatively slim, as can be seen when comparing Stage IIIb SWB Puma to the left and current LWB model to the right.
TRANSMISSION
Initially, the Puma was offered with a choice of three powershift variants, 18F/6R, 19F/6R 40km/hr and 19F/6R 50 km/hr. In the UK, the 19-speed transmission was pretty much the default fit across all LWB Puma models, with 40km/hr 19-speed tractors limited to 1,700rpm in the top ratio to help reduce fuel use in transport. 50km/hr speeds are pretty much expected on a current tractor in the Puma class but be careful when buying an older model. Some may have had a software tweak that enabled a 40kph tractor to ‘go faster’ but not necessarily be equipped with the brakes to match (see Check the brakes). A creep speed option was available from the outset but is not common.
The CVT transmission fitted to Puma CVX LWB tractors has four forward and two reverse mechanical ratios. Although the, by now, well-proven basics of this transmission have not changed, mechanical elements have been developed to improve both refinement and dependability. The ‘box in the current 260 CVX is different to that used in the previous 240 models, which in turn saw upgrades when compared to the earlier 225 and 230 models. This is not to suggest an older Puma CVX is more likely to suffer mechanical woes but more that the later transmission will be better able to withstand more power and longer stints at high transport speeds.
The CVT transmission is worked via the unique to Case IH Automatic Power Management system, APM. The system has evolved, but in outline APM employs a split throttle designed to allow the engines minimum working speed to be set on one throttle with the maximum on the other. For pto work, these same throttles are used to determine the engines speed parameters. APM can be set up for a specific job with the CVT transmission then managing engine, working and, where relevant, pto speeds.
As you would expect, since the Puma was launched there have been numerous control software revisions to include updates made during a Case IH dealer service. If you are buying an older tractor, it can be worth noting the software version and checking with a Case IH dealer if it is the most up to date version for the year of tractor in question. Although operators can look up error codes and software versions via the tractor menu system, actual upgrades will need to be carried out by a dealer or specialist.
DEPENDABLE CVT RESPONDS TO PROPER CARE
The oil in a CVX transmission works harder than on a powershift tractor as it is employed in the hydrostatic element of the drive and is shared with the hydraulics and rear axle brakes. The service intervals on pre-Stage V tractors are 600 hours engine
and 1,200 hours for the hydraulics and transmission. This is extended to 750 and 1,500 hours on Stage V models (timewise, Case IH suggest tractors are serviced at least every 18 months). It is important a tractor has always been serviced to schedule.
Service data can be accessed via the tractor terminal if it has been carried out by a dealer or Case IH tractor specialist. Dealers will supply the necessary filter and lubricants package for an engine service but will typically recommend the larger 1,200/1,500 service is carried out by them, particularly if the tractor’s original warranty is in place.
You can get an idea of the condition of the transmission/hydraulic oil by taking a look at the sight glass on the rear axles nearside. Prior to a service this oil will of course not look golden fresh, but on a tractor that has been recently serviced the oil should still look ‘bright’. If not, this could mean the clean oil has been contaminated by failing brakes. Seek advice.
If there is a problem with a CVX transmission that is not related to software, mechanical repairs can be made by those with the specialist knowledge to spot what does and does not need work. Compared to some alternative CVT transmissions, the Case IH design is relatively repair friendly. A complete transmission rebuild is unlikely to exceed £10,000, a big sum but not as large as can be the case on some other tractor makes.
AdBlue and fuel tanks are essentially the same between Stage IV and Stage V models, but top spec later tractors will have alloy nearside cab steps, a hand wash water tank and compressed air outlet complete with plug in hose with blower nozzle.
WHAT’S USED
CHIPPED TRACTORS
Third party engine mapping has become more complex as manufactures have tightened the protocols to re-map engine power characteristics. This is in part necessary to prevent tampering with engine emission controls. This is not to suggest even a Stage V tractor cannot receive ‘third party’ attention (but invalidate the original warranty in the process) but as a used tractor buyer be aware engine tampering may prevent a service tech from accessing the tractor’s control software and error codes.
Stage III tractors are easier to ‘chip’ than later Stage IV models, a point to check on older tractors. If a tractor has been chipped it may not mean it will have suffered premature wear but some may have been boosted at the expense of good fuel use and longevity. Our advice? Have the tractor checked. A previous buyer of a used model may not be aware the tractor they are selling on has been chipped in the past.
WHAT’S USED
<< If a test drive of a used CVX reveals anything other than a smooth run up to speed, in all the ratios, seek advice. Oil contaminated with brake detritus that is allowed to block the filters is a great way to hurt the transmission.
A software upgrade and/or fresh oil can make an affordable difference to a tractor that appears to have a bigger transmission problem. That said, it can take someone who really knows these tractors to spot a more serious problem brewing. If you find a great private used buy but are a bit concerned over a potential problem you have spotted, seek advice. A telephone call and a chat or a paid for check is cheaper than buying a tractor with a problem.
The same will apply to a powershift gearbox, wear in the clutch packs and poor changes due to software glitches helping to spoil what is typically an equally tough transmission. A caveat is that a powershift is easier to ‘abuse’. There are plenty of items that can suffer at the hands of an unsympathetic operator.
ENGINE: HAS IT BENEFITTED FROM MORE THAN JUST FRESH OIL AND FILTERS?
The 6.7litre engines powering all LWB Puma models is well proven and, in its latest installation in a 260 CVX, capable of pumping out more than 300hp thanks to the engine being fitted with a variable geometry turbo.
The key to engine longevity is ensuring the oils, filters and exhaust treatment fluids
are of good quality and service intervals are adhered to. Tractors run with blocked radiators can suffer from hot running related problems, so look for evidence of coolant leaks. Rare but not unheard of. As a rule, the FTP engine is oil and gas tight, so be wary if the engine is fluid or exhaust gas stained.
One service item that can be overlooked is the crankcase breather which should not be confused with replacing the breather filter kit. The latter is a relatively straightforward task requiring a kit of parts that will retail for under £200. Cleaning the breather itself is a workshop task that can take around six hours with the related expenses. When buying a used Puma, ask if the crankcase breather has been cleaned. If not, and it is due, have it done. Leave the job and it can lead to the tractor’s Cat filling with oil and a much bigger problem.
NOTE: During a service, a dealer workshop will typically carry out a forced filter regen to burn off deposits before the engine oil is changed.
IIIB
SIMPLE SPEC CHECK
CVX tractors from 2009 were, like powershift (Multicontroller) tractors, initially offered with a choice of mechanical or electronic spools. LWB Puma Multicontroller models would have come with either a 1,000kg weight pack or front linkage, the CVX standard spec including a front linkage and electronic spools in the UK. Be aware, however, that customers could delete standard features so always check, particularly if considering an earlier tractor. Electronic spool and front linkage combinations have remote raise/lower front and rear. A front pto remains an option, as does extra front remote valves and electrical connections.
Range topping CVX LWB Puma tractors are likely to be fitted with a 98inch bar axle and a suspended rear cab by default but flange rear wheels are common on the ‘100’ number models . Although officially an

STAGE III TO STAGE IV – MORE CHANGES THAN
Case IH launched the Stage IV LWB Puma models in 2015, with the 6.7 litre, 24 valve FPT motor now having Hi-eSCR aftertreatment and the need for AdBlue. Enter the DOC Diesel Oxidation Catalyst and CUC Clean Up Catalyst but no diesel particulate filter or Exhaust Gas Recirculation EGR valve.
The CVX CVT and Multicontroller powershift transmissions were pretty much carried over from the Stage III models but there are differences to the CVX unit. It retained the same four-range set up but power boost was now available in reverse, a point to note if you are after a rare reverse-drive tractor for power hungry duties such as working a triple mower.
Case IH had also worked on the response of the CVX driving pedal to help make it easier to have smooth progress when accelerating, with I, II and III ranges seeing the settings altered to improve deceleration rates.
When comparing a Stage IIIB 230 CVX and Stage IV 240 CVX, the CCLS hydraulic pump max output of 161l/min or 181l/min optional was matched to four electronic rear remotes as standard with the option of a fifth. A detail Stage IV change was that it was also now possible to move from
option on 40 km/hr tractors, the front axle is most likely to be a suspended as opposed to a rigid unit, with integral hub brakes an option. The latter should be fitted to tractors capable of 50km/r, but still check. The suspended front axles will have active suspension that should
YOU MAY THINK
‘float’ to ‘raise’ without needing to pause in ‘neutral’. All 240 CVX would have been fitted with a front linkage and single mid-mount spool as standard, with up to three additional mid-mount valves as an option.
The cab of the Stage IV generation saw several changes. The ‘wavy’ roof was offered with a high-intensity light package with four front and six rear 1,800 lumen LED work lights. In addition two belt-line LEDs at the front, two post-mounted LEDs at the rear and various road and work lights in the bonnet, to include a single Xenon unit, are other changes available. The cab screen changed to a single-piece design and the front mudguards were made longer. In the cab, there were new comfort packages on offer too. (See main text).
Headland Management 2 was a new Stage IV option in place of the then standard HMC set-up. This allowed recording and editing both on the move and when stationary with trigger points based on distance as well as time. Another detail is that it is possible to select which electronic remote is operated via the MultiController or mini joystick. Add a wider choice of ISOBUS and AccuGuide auto-steering options and there are perhaps more changes between these tractor generations than you might think.
accommodate varied loads and ensure the axle settles at its mid-point to deliver optimum travel. If a tractor looks nose heavy when running it could suggest something is amiss. Simialrly, the front end should be free of clonks and feeding back jolts to the operator when crossing
rough ground. If there is a concern, have the system checked. Third party suspension mods, such as the Superglide pneumatic suspension kit, can be fitted to bring a tired front end up to date but these kits will only work with cab suspension and air brake equipped tractors. >>
AFS Pro 700 display and new style steering wheel fitted to Stage V tractors with current bonnet design. Multicontroller models increasingly like to have mini joystick for the front linkage or front loader control, with electronic spools also popular.
Professional spec on Stage V tractors comes with a Premium leather seat with active suspension and an AFS Pro 700 display. Like its predecessors, the latter can be scrolled through to show a host of data to include details of when a service is due. Dealers will typically only service a used buy if it is due, a point to note if the latter is due in 100 or so hours.
By current standards, the front axle suspension on Puma tractors is now looking somewhat dated but the flip to this is that the system is reliable and if there is something wrong, repairs are not overly expensive. Air suspension kits from third parties are worth considering if the tractor has air brakes and pneumatic cab suspension.
SPECIFICATION PACKS
Cab specification and outline packages may not add a premium to a used tractor’s price but operators will be keen to have the best seat possible and certain spec packs will add key features such as four-speed pto. As a guide, Stage IV tractors, that will now be around eight years old, would have been offered with four main packs that were more ‘comfort’ orientated:
• Standard: Grammer air seat, manualadjust armrest, manual air con, polyurethane steering wheel
• Deluxe Comfort: Grammer Dual Motion seat, electric-adjust armrest, leather steering wheel, carpet floor mat, auto climate control (£2,253 extra when new)
electric-adjust armrest, leather steering wheel, carpet floor mat, auto climate control (£3,081 extra)
• Active Leather Comfort: Leather Grammer Maximo Evolution seat (active suspension, heated, vented), electricadjust armrest, leather steering wheel, carpet floor mat, auto climate control (£4,190 extra).
The short-lived Stage V interim ‘old bonnet’ models would have been offered with these packs as well. Stage V ‘new bonnet’ final tractors have three key specification pack choices but these have options within them, so you will need to check what a used buy has fitted. Some of what follows will also apply to earlier models so you really do need to find out what is fitted and not go by the spec pack alone.

EASILY OVERLOOKED BASICS
When you find a tractor that looks like it will fit your needs it is all too easy to overlook the basics. Take time to look under
the cab, checking for corrosion, damaged hoses and loose wiring. There is no shame in backing out of a viewing if you don’t like what you see. A tractor sourced via a Case IH dealer is likely to have had a proper pre-sale clean, with dealers selling older tractors often fitting replacement items to bring the cosmetics up to a good standard.
If you are not fussed by a battered fender or damaged bonnet, ask if a dealer has a trade-in that can be brought up to a good standard mechanically but with the cosmetics left as is. A new set of fenders can weigh in at over £1,000, with parts and labour spent on cosmetics not necessarily buying you a ‘better’ tractor.
IT’S YOUR MONEY
Try and have an inspection sequence, such as from front to back. Puma LWB front axles come in two sizes, ‘100’ models having a three pin front hub, ‘200’ tractors a heavier duty four pin. The front axles fitted to Stage III models may have had the differential clutch packs changed, Case IH having progressively ‘beefed up’ the axles over the years.
WHAT’S USED
STAGE IV TO STAGE V –CONTINUING EVOLUTION
This can be a little confusing as the Stage V offering from late 2019 clearly got messed up by the pandemic, a second Stage V launch arriving for the 2021 model year. It is easy to spot the difference between these Stage V tractors as the first ones look the same as their Stage IV predecessors, 2021 tractors gaining the new bonnet carried over to the current generation.
As before, there were three Multicontroller Stage V models, the 185, 200 and 220 CVX CVT transmission including the range topping Puma 240. To meet tougher emission regs, the engines were now fitted with Hi-eSCR2. Engine oil change intervals were extended to 750 hours or 18 months, the transmission oil change interval stretched to 1,500 hours.
Revised features included a configurable quick-jump menu for the AFS Pro 700 monitor and improvements in transport power on Multicontroller versions. A highcapacity compressor was added as an option that was claimed to boost tyre inflation times by up to 35%.
Updates for 2021 included the new bonnet, some tweaks to the control of the CVX transmission, a front linkage redesign and an in-cab cool box.
In August 2023, further changes were made, to include the launch of a new range topper, the Puma 260 CVX. As a used buyer, the latest goody bag will be out of reach for a while but to whet your future buying possibility appetite changes to look forward to include:
• New cab with a bit more room and a claimed 10% noise reduction to 66dBA. An Advanced Vehicle Suspension option is also offered, this linking the cab, front axle and front linkage suspension systems to deliver a claimed smoother ride.
• New armrest with 12in AFS Pro 1200 display as standard. The long-lived A-pillar display finally bites the dust, with a display tablet now doing the same job.
• At long last, backlit icons will make finding control buttons in the dark easier.
Clean oil showing in the rear axle sight glass is a good sign, the more so if a tractor has done a few hours since it was last serviced. Dirty black oil can be a sign of failed rear brakes. Bad news on any variant but even more so on one with a CVT transmission.
Operating a butterfly valve, the exhaust brake system was an option that will have been widely specified from new on tractors used for transport. The later the tractor, the more likely it will have the system. It is normal for turbo heat to burn off the paint on valve actuator arm.
Check for hub leaks and play in the track rods, with uneven front tyre wear indicating easily rectified tracking issues. With the tractor running, a suspended axle should ‘settle’ in a noticeably ‘raised’ position as opposed to rest upon the stops.
Around the rear, look for wear in the three-point linkage and check the tractor comes with balls for the quick hitch. You can get a good idea of how a tractor has been used from the linkages, with the pick-up hitch and wear in the towing hook also helping give you an idea of past use.
LWB Puma’s may once have been considered a ‘big’ prime mover. Not these days, with a Puma CVX 240 on grain cart being considered a great combination when hitched to a high-capacity trailer. It really does pay to think long and hard about the tractor’s brakes and if it is fitted with trailer ABS. Trailer braking systems have come on leaps and bounds since the Puma was launched, but this tech is only of value if trailed kit has the brakes to take advantage of what is on offer. If you do a lot of transport work, talk your needs through with a dealer or tractor specialist. An early Stage III tractor may not fit in with what you want.
SUMMARY
Case IH got the LWB Puma right from launch. As time has moved on, these models have seen a great deal of development. If it were possible to drive as near new like for like early Stage IIIa and current Stage V models side by side the advances made would be easily spotted. Allowing for inflation, new tractors are more expensive than they once were but they are also much better to work with. Those at the entry level may miss out on later model developments but there are plus points. Stage III and Stage IV tractors are well-established with good support outside the main Case IH dealer network. Buy the right tractor, invest in its future care and the chances are it will prove a good long-term purchase. The trick is to secure the best used model to start with. With thanks to KFS UK, Chipping Norton.
SERVICE HISTORY IS IMPORTANT
“The first thing I look at on a used Puma is condition, poor cosmetics costing a lot of money to put right”, said Ricky Morris, workshop foreman of Case IH dealers KFS UK.
“Service history is also really important, as there is a lot more to looking after these tractors than just changing fluids and filters. Although the interim 600/750 hour service can be a customer job if they buy a service kit from a dealer, the bigger 1,200/1,500 hour service is more involved. By looking up error codes, a dealer may be able to spot a problem and resolve it before it leads to a problem”.
Ricky added that there are certain jobs that need to be carried out, such as ensuring a forced regen is carried out
before changing the engine oil, ensuring the crankcase breather is cleaned and making sure the brakes are in good shape. It is also important to check for a ‘good brake pedal’ during a test drive.
“As these tractors get older they do not necessarily need more care but it remains important to keep on top of maintenance. We have a lot of Puma experience in the trade which means we will have encountered any main problem areas and know how to resolve them. These are solid tractors that will deliver good service if they are looked after”.
Ricky adds that there is a noticeable difference between early and more recent Puma models, build quality and refinement of later tractors keeping them up to date.

Life has been nothing but hectic, what with sales and events which have kept me very busy.
I travelled to the disposal sale of the Severnside Engineerium at Churcham, Gloucestershire on Wednesday 30 July. Here Mick Gould Commercials near Wadhurst purchased a well engineered Fordson E27N Major fitted with an Ursus Bison six-cylinder diesel and White winch on the back, selling for £11,000.
No doubt he will be using it at some stage in his famous recovery company. By the time you read this I will be on my way back from the USA having taken a group party to the Caterpillar 100th Anniversary event at Rantoul, Illinois.

NICK J KNIGHT CLEAROUT SALE
On Saturday 5 July in overcast conditions
Southern Counties Auctioneers were at Switch Back Yard, Woodmancote, Chichester, West Sussex for the Nick J Knight clearout sale.
As for the sale highlight that was the Roadless 1947 Fordson DG4 petrol/paraffin halftrack No.247 XBP879 grade 1.6 which ran and was purchased by a dealer for a client at £8,000. Later on some £2,250 was paid for the 1954 County Z crawler grade 1.6 condition.

The £8,000 Roadless DG petrol paraffin No. 247
It is with deep regret that I report these notes on an enthusiastic friend of the agricultural movement who has passed away before his time at the age of just 57. Philip Peter Broad was a contractor and Ford, Fordson and County owner based at his Mote Farm, Ivy Hatch, Sevenoaks premises. Each year the Broad’s organised a late spring road run that raised over £100,000 for charities who have greatly benefitted from these events.
Phil’s funeral service took place at Plaxtol Parish Church on Thursday 19 June where over 600 people descended from all directions to this small village to pay their respects to Phil, Debbie his wife and their children Matt (25) and Bex (20) and their family.
Many were ferried from Mote Farm in people carrying trailers normally used at the Weald of Kent ploughing match. At the head was the Broad contracting fleet and the front of one of the tractors (John Deere 6920S) featured a lovely mural of Phil leaving Mote Farm on his 1967 Ford Pre Force 4000 at the start of one of his road runs.
With a full choir in place the church robustly sang All things bright and beautiful after which family tributes were given by Matt and Bex in a clear and an entertaining way as they reflected on their father’s ‘get up and go life’. We learnt that owning his own business and farming was
PHIL BROAD
very much part of Phil’s ambition and he was able to achieve that thanks to his wife’s work ethic in making it all happen. This lady was very much the key to his success.
After the blessing everyone walked out in the beautiful sunshine to the music of Dvorak and his New World Symphony. Many people made their way to Mote Farm for the excellent wake under the marquee that went on into the early evening with the fine line of the Phil Broad contracting fleet making an impressive sight.
The procession parked up before the church service started
SUPERB HARRISON SALE
Malcolm Harrison staged the Walkers of Ashbourne, Derbyshire clearout sale which amounted to nearly 700 lots. After the lorries were sold we moved to the tractors, starting with the good looking 1995 Ford 3930 four-wheel drive needing tyres which soon raised a good £14,500, grade 3.
As for the early highlight in this section the green Fordson N with Perkins P6 at £9,300 was followed by the blue N with similar power at £4,200. Next came the two single-cylinder tractors in the sale, we saw the 1948 Field
Marshall Series 2 with lights grade 5 PRF413 sell for a thumping £15,000. It was followed by the star in the sale the genuine from all accounts circa 1939 Lanz HR9 55hp Eli Bulldog looking lovely grade 5 that went on to be knocked down at £42,000.
The model was introduced in 1937 for road traffic use with its 10.3 litre engine and is capable of cruising at 25mph, in fact the largest year of production was 1939 when 528 were built many were used by the Luftwaffe in WW2.

Friday 1 August saw the amazing Lambert Gathering take place at Horsmonden, Kent. Engines that were owned in their working lives by Chris W Lambert (he had over 200 through his hands) came back to their Kentish roots from all over the UK, thanks to Peter Love, his team of marshals and engine owner’s persistence to see it all go ahead.
The Gathering was a fore taste of what was to be seen at the Bill Giles staged Woodchurch Steam Rally held on 2-3 August. This was part of the celebrations marking 70 years since the grand sale of 26 Lambert engines by Lambert and Foster at Station Yard, Horsmonden on 15-16 June 1955.
The original organiser of the gathering John Freeman, was unfortunately taken ill and thus the event itself was put in jeopardy. Peter Love offered to step in and organise the day and road run, with the help from well known Kentish steam engineer Brian Hope from Yalding.
Peter was rather unsure of the actual number of engines that would turn up at the assembly and unloading points, located at Ian Overy’s excellent Burr Hill Farm on the edge of the nearby village of Brenchley.
The Bygrave’s from Yorkshire arrived with 1925 Wallis & Steevens 4RT single-cylinder tractor No.7740 Sam, which they call work in progress. Jamie Croft then arrived from Brightling, East Sussex with Foden No. 9052 Rob Roy which was sold at the 1955 sale so things looked rather promising.
Brian Hope arrived with Godfrey Jordon

No. 5467 is now owned by Mark Newman of Orchard View Garage, Yalding and at the time that the roller arrived at Horsmonden Mark was escorting his daughter down the aisle at her wedding!
Local folk gathered outside the Gun and Spitroast Inn and the very popular village shop. One of the onlookers arrived on her mobility scooter and was interested in the little Ferguson TE-D standing there. “I used to drive one of those when we were hop picking” she volunteered. Asked if she had connections with

Marshal Trevor Manual was kept busy making sure the crowd of onlookers were kept safe as the engines from the farm started to arrive.
The first engine to come was James Blenkinsop from the Midlands with his 1920 Garrett 4CD tractor No33981 of which Chris Lambert was the third owner (1925-47) when the engine was sold to Sir C Colson, Blewbury, Oxfordshire and entered preservation in 1951. It was some 61 years ago when James Blenkinsop purchased it, in an unloved condition and it looked in fantastic condition here.

After visiting Lamberts Place, as it’s called now for a photo session. The Garrett was directed to the Barge family’s Old Station Garage where the last public service trains passed on Saturday 10 June 1961.
The line was lifted in 1964 and the Barge family took on the railway station site and converted it to their garage premises in 1966, which they continue today with the third generation working in the garage, which is pleasing to see. Our correspondent knew Paul’s father, Wally, well, James and team were made very welcome by the family and were shown around the site.
Also an early starter was the Bygrave’s Wallis and Steevens R4T single-cylinder light tractor No. 7740 of 1925 called Sam. Chris Lambert purchased this from Hardwicks of Ewell in 1952 specifically for Ernie Wicks of Southborough who ran a garage business and kept his small fleet of engines in the Lambert yard.
It was followed down by Brian Hope and Godfrey on the 1904 Aveling & Porter roller down the hill and around the various sites and after lots of pictures, headed back to the green where lots of the public conversed with the crew. This included a family from Italy who thought the rampant horse on the front

Next came, 6hp Foden traction engine
Rob Roy No.9052 of 1919, said to be the last Foden traction engine built and that is why Chris Lambert was keen on buying it. It was in 1953 that he purchased the engine and it took part in two of Lambert’s June steam parties. It was sold in the sale for £90 by Lambert and Symes auctioneer Charlie Hillier to JC Ward of Egham. Now owned by Mike Wilkinson of Blackpool, the engine is on loan to Jamie Croft and looked in superb clean condition as it travelled to the various locations as people chatted together. It certainly made an impression on the local crowd.
Then came the Gerrard’s 1926 Aveling and Porter L series tractor No. 11423 named Smokey, its chimney having been fitted with a traditional spark arrestor. It was new to the Kent County Council and in 1934 came into Lambert’s ownership and was one of a number that were sold and converted with John Allen of Oxford roller equipment and sold in 1937.
Sounding perfect was the mighty 1900 Aveling and Porter road locomotive Jimmy No 4561 which Lambert purchased in 1903-1955 when it was sold to his step daughter for £85

Those of us on duty at the green thought this was the last engine, but we were wrong. The powerful ex north Queensland, Australia Marshall 8hp traction engine No. 55924 of 1911 driven by Chris Lawson, assisted by Lorna Kimber arrived.
After a hard morning’s work from Dorset they retired to the pub for a well earned lunch, later following the remaining engines that had made their way down to the old station and Lamberts Place. It very much represented the nine Marshall engines that Chris Lambert had through his hands.
The engines all lined up around the green, similar to the way the Eastwood’s engines had into the 1980s. By 4pm the crews were off to load up and head down the 19 miles to the Woodchurch rally site for the following two days celebrations.
I think it’s fair to say that after all the drama of the cancellation, so to speak, those that took part would agree it turned out to be a very successful event. On the Sunday evening ITV Meridian evening news featured the whole Lambert Gathering including our correspondent Peter Love.
NEW ENGINES, MORE COMFORT AND A NEW TOP MODEL
Four years after its market launch, the Trion series from Claas continues to set standards in the mid-sized combine harvester segment. The new models impress with their greater harvesting performance: engine outputs of up to 507 hp further increase throughput, while the larger grain tank volume of 13,500 litres increases productive time by reducing overloading and offers reserves for long fields. As with the Lexion, comfortenhancing innovations in the cab and in the area of maintenance have been introduced throughout the Trion series.
The Trion 760 with 507hp will complete the Claas combine harvester range in the medium power class from the 2026 model year as a wheel and Terra Trac variant. The Trion 750 will
also receive a power increase to 466hp with Dynamic Power and Dynamic Cooling.
NEW TOP MODEL TRION 760
From the 2026 model year, the Trion 700 series will be available as a wheel, Terra Trac or Montana variant with the APS Hybrid system, which has been tried and tested a thousand times over for many years.
The Trion 760 and Trion 750 use an APS Twin Hybrid threshing unit with a 1,420mm feed channel width, 600mm threshing drum and two axial rotors with a diameter of 445mm and a length of 4,200mm for high-performance separation. For the three other Trion 700 models, Claas continues to rely on the APS Single Hybrid threshing unit with a 570mm axial rotor for residual grain separation.
The new top model in the Trion 760 series is powered by a MAN D26 engine with a displacement of 12.4 litres and a rated output of 507hp. Thanks to its large grain tank with a capacity of 13,500 litres and the more powerful front-attachment drive, the Trion 760 achieves a significant increase in productivity and efficiency, especially on high-yielding sites and when harvesting grain maize. Thanks to Dynamic Power, the engine power always adapts to the respective conditions of use, ensuring efficient work with fuel savings of up to 10%. On the road, the two new Trion top models travel at a top speed of 30 km/h at a reduced engine speed of 1,600 rpm, so that they are always on the move quickly, but with maximum efficiency and cost savings, even over longer distances between work sites.
To take account of the increased engine power, the powerful cooling in the Trion 760 and Trion 750 is provided by the horizontal cooling package familiar from the Lexion. Thanks to Dynamic Cooling – standard on the Trion 760 and Trion 750 for the first time – the variable fan adapts its output to the working conditions, saving up to 15 kW of power. This power saving is then available for the ground drive or other units – or ensures a further reduction in absolute fuel consumption of up to 10%.
CAB WITH APPLE CARPLAY AND ANDROID AUTO
From the 2026 model year, an Apple CarPlay and Android Auto radio with a 6.75 inch touch display, DAB+ including optional subwoofer and Bluetooth will be available in the cab for all three Trion model series. A compressed air connection with a blow gun is also available in the cab for quick and easy cleaning of controls and the cab floor. Thanks to new interior lighting, working in the evening and at night is pleasant and safer. In addition to the innovations in the cab, the new LED work lighting also sets standards in the mid-range performance segment –with up to 75% higher ambient illumination and perfect alignment, it turns night into day and ensures greater safety in the field.
CEMOS DRIVER ASSISTANCE
With Cemos Automatic the Lexion and Trion have been setting the standard in the field of self-learning combine automation and optimisation to achieve the highest machine efficiency and maximum productivity for years. WHAT’S NEW
• Clear order management: Orders are easily and conveniently created in Claas Connect and called up on the Cemis 1200. Orders can be documented and managed directly on the machine.
• Automatic documentation with Claas connect: Automatic documentation of field work is also possible without creating jobs for a complete database. Interpolated yield maps of outstanding quality can be created automatically from the machine's yield points.
• Real-time information: Machine position and status as well as current machine data, settings and performance can be viewed from anywhere. This enables convenient navigation to the machine's operating location. In addition, Claas Connect informs the user how long the work in the field is likely to take –regardless of how many machines are currently working in the field.
• Analyse and optimise: Detailed analyses enable optimisations and comparisons between different machines. Efficiency, performance and yield data can be analysed as a whole.
• Precise planning: The remaining working time per field can be estimated based on current performance data. Claas Connect also provides detailed field overviews and satellite data for monitoring vegetation and pre-planning harvesting operations.

AGRI-ROBOTICS SAFETY TRAINING TO MEET BRITISH STANDARDS
A new suite of LANTRA accredited online training courses will help manufacturers, dealers, owners and operators comply with the recently introduced British Standard Code of Practice for the use of autonomous mobile machinery (AMM) in UK agriculture and horticulture.
Developed by Ei OPERATOR, one of the UK’s leading agricultural online training providers, the courses have been welcomed by the industry and experts who developed the Standard.
The Code of Practice was introduced to boost the growth of autonomous operations in the UK’s farming and horticulture sectors. Providing a standard to which everyone can
work helps to end uncertainty and provides the confidence potential users need to invest.
Ei OPERATOR AgriTech online training provides a significant step forward by helping those looking to adopt autonomous mobile machines to comply with the Code of Practice and operate safely.
Key factors for compliance include addressing the impacts for existing health and safety legislation, understanding the new risks autonomous machines pose and having the necessary skills to mitigate those risks. Formal, accredited training helps all those involved with AMM to understand their responsibilities, as well as providing assurance the business is compliant.
Four separate courses are designed
to provide information and training for all levels of operation. While mainly designed for businesses and their staff adopting autonomous mobile machinery, they are also suitable for researchers, manufacturers, dealers and distributors working in the UK, who also need to comply with the Code of Practice.
Course choices include:
• An introduction to the safe use of autonomous machinery.
• Safe integration of autonomous machinery.
• Safety and risk management for autonomous machinery.
• Operational planning and site design for autonomous machinery.

NEW FEATURES AND OPTIMISED TECHNOLOGY
The Horsch Leeb Xeric 14 FS, the first pneumatic Horsch fertiliser spreader, will go into series production for season 2026. After its presentation at the Agritechnica 2023, the machine was used intensively and further developed based on extensive field experience. Series production now starts with new features and optimised technology.
In addition to the familiar working widths of 36m and 48m, a 39m version now completes the range. With a capacity of 14m³, short filling and long spreading times in combination with operational speeds of up to 20 km/h, the Xeric offers an efficient solution for the narrow time window of fertiliser spreading. Also new in the range is the optional tyre pressure regulation system which allows for a flexible adjustment of the tyre pressure while driving. This increases the contact area and significantly reduces the ground pressure, thereby extending the possible time window for using the machine.
The Leeb Xeric sets new standards, particularly with regard to distribution accuracy. The boom fertiliser spreader ensures precise distribution across the boom width, regardless of wind or poor fertiliser quality. The system has consistently been designed for the use of granulated fertilisers. The well-proven boom control system BoomControl ensures stable boom control across the entire working width. With a target area distance of approximately 150cm, the conditions for a precise lateral distribution are ideal. The boom actively adapts to the terrain at all times and is completely decoupled from the vehicle.
The PrecisionCalibrationSystem is the centrepiece of the Xeric
and the basis for precise fertiliser application and distribution. The fertiliser is transported out of the pressurised hopper via augers and from there into the metering box which has a fixed water meter and is mounted on three stable weighing rods. Thus, the spreader can be calibrated quickly with the correct input of the fertiliser type. In the course of the further development, additional metering augers were integrated to be able to optimally adapt to different fertiliser types and quantities as well as operational speeds.
For a precise spreading, 12 section metering augers work in the metering box to meter the spreading material – and the quantities are variable. Curve compensation (PrecisionSpread Pro) and variable per section (PrecisionSpread Pro Plus) are available as additional equipment.)
The fertiliser then enters the air flow by gravity where it is accelerated by air and transported outwards through the pipes. This innovative transport and metering system minimises wear and the running variable costs.
The tried-and-tested tandem axle chassis of the Leeb 12 TD crop care sprayer ensures maximum contact area and smooth running, thus helping to protect the soil. As with the Leeb 12 TD, the discharge of the Xeric 14 FS is vertical load-optimised.
NEW COMBINATION DRIBBLE BAR
Slurry and digestate management specialists Tramspread have introduced the Suffolk range 12m Combination dribble bar. This new development consists of a redesigned 12m dribble bar with the ability to carry a Tramspread 1,000m random wrap reeler.
This makes it possible for the spreading tractor to carry a hose reeler in the front linkage and another on the back of the dribble bar when travelling between fields or jobs. Clear access to the tractor pickup hitch also allows a Tramspread engine driven pump unit to be towed at the same time.
Tramspread has always been known for its high specification premium quality products but the company also recognises there are scenarios where some of these design features are not always fully utilised. Consequently, the Combination dribble bar has a streamlined specification and is intended to offer a more
cost-effective option where this type of machine is appropriate.
The new dribble bar features a heavy-duty front-mounted 5” swinging arm allowing U-turns to be made in the field. Pipework is 5” throughout, from the swinging arm to the T-piece manifold, to accommodate high flow-rates. It is a twin macerator machine, with Alrena units supplied as standard and the option of Vogelsang equivalents at the customer’s request.
The main frame has been redesigned, with integral linkage mounting points to allow close-coupling and a lighter overall weight. The booms are also lighter, whilst retaining strength, to keep overall weight as low as possible.
The reeler is easily dropped-off from the dribble bar, with quick couplers provided for the hydraulic hoses. The booms are folded vertically using the usual Tramspread electrohydraulic controls.

THROUGHPUT, BALE DENSITY AND EFFICIENCY REDEFINED
With the Cerex 700 RC series, Claas is taking the performance of round balers to a new level. Developed for professionals and the highest demands, it will complement the Claas product range of variable round balers above the Variant 500 and combines maximum throughput capacity with impressive bale density – with unprecedented efficiency and maximum versatility in silage, straw, hay and hemp.
TOP PERFORMANCE IN TERMS OF DENSITY AND THROUGHPUT
The Cerex 700 RC sets new heights in terms of efficiency: with a 1,000 rpm pto drive, 5-row HD Multiflow pick-up and spiral feed rotor, it produces up to 60 high-density bales per hour – even in demanding conditions and with low energy input. The standard PRO cutting frame keeps throughput capacity consistently high and effectively prevents blockages. The high-quality hydraulic system ensures consistently high pressure so that every bale is evenly compacted and shaped.
NEW CHAMBER CONCEPT
The new bale chamber of the Cerex 700 RC works with two endless HD belts with
continuous cleaning and a robust hydraulic system with a new clamping arm cylinder for maximum baling force. As a result, the Cerex 700 RC achieves bale densities of over 135 kg/m³ – an absolute best in its class, as comparative tests have shown. The new HD belts are also extremely dimensionally stable and designed for a long service life even under maximum load. Due to the almost complete enclosure of the bale, crumbling losses are significantly reduced, even with short lengths of cut.
The pressure control is precise and constant, as well as easily set and controlled via the ISOBUS terminal. With its newly developed chamber concept and a separate hydraulic system, the Cerex 700 RC delivers highly compacted bales regardless of the crop and harvesting conditions. Even at high forward speeds, i.e. high throughput, the density remains stable, ensuring outstanding forage quality. A sensor on each endless HD belt for continuous bale shape control guarantees a perfect bale shape.
With the new bale chamber, bale diameters from 0.90m to 1.60m (Cerex 760 RC) or 0.90m to 1.83m (Cerex 780 RC) can be realised continuously. A soft core function comes as standard and enables targeted baling
pressure and quality control, especially when baling hay and silage.
The new bale chamber works with two endless HD belts, new hydraulics and a new tensioning arm. This achieves maximum baling densities with low electrical power requirements and minimised crumbling losses. The Cerex is approved for use in a wide range of crops such as silage, straw, hay or hemp.
MULTIFLOW HD PICK-UP
The Cerex 700 RC is equipped with the latest generation of Claas pick-up, the Claas Multiflow HD with a working width of 2.10m (1.90m DIN raking width). Based on more than 90 years of experience in pick-up technology, it enables even lower-loss crop feeding and a noticeably more constant material flow. The 5-row HD pick-up enables high driving speeds with an impressive pick-up capacity thanks to its 146rpm speed and maximises the crop flow to the cutting rotor. The innovative cam track first introduced in 2024 with the Rollant 630 RC Uniwrap is both extremely smooth-running and durable with reduced maintenance requirements – thanks to the 70mm pick up reel shaft, for example. Removable strippers made of robust, durable plastic guarantee quick and easy access for maintenance work.
SPIRAL ROTOR AND HD KNIVES
Behind the pick-up of the Cerex 700 RC, the crop is transferred to the bale chamber by the proven heavy-duty Roto Cut feed rotor with 8mm thick, spirally arranged double tines made of double-hardened boron steel. Four rows of tines feed the crop at up to 13,800 cuts per minute through the 25-blade cutting rotor with a theoretical length of cut of 44mm. The optional HD knives with individual spring preload guarantee particularly long operating times and sharpening intervals. The knife groups (25/13/12/0) are conveniently switched electro-hydraulically on the machine. All knives are individually secured and can be swivelled in and out hydraulically via the ISOBUS terminal.
In the event of irregular swath thicknesses, the PRO cutting frame is able to open by up to 30mm while maintaining first-class cutting quality, thus adapting to the forage flow and preventing blockages. In addition, the visual and acoustic early warning system enables the operator to work as close as possible to the maximum throughput of the baler and proactively reduce the driving speed when the amount of forage increases significantly. Should a blockage nevertheless occur, the cutting frame can be actively lowered hydraulically at the touch of a button on the ISOBUS terminal.
POWERFUL DRIVES
The Cerex 700 RC works with a consistent HD concept with robust, low-wear components. The HD frame has reinforced
main load points, high-performance bearings and a cutting rotor drive via a heavy-duty duplex chain. The combination of selected components ensures maximum durability, even in hardness and continuous silage use. At the same time, vibrations are reduced.
The Cerex 700 RC is driven by a new HD split drive designed for up to 216 hp input power with 1,000 rpm and split power distribution from the main gearbox. The left strand goes to the drive for the bale chamber, while the right strand drives the cutting rotor via a duplex chain. This type of drive allows the transmission of higher torques, and enables a longer service life of the drive chains and overall increased reliability of the entire baler.
The central lubrication system is also designed for the most demanding and changing harvesting conditions. Customers can choose the extended Plus centralised lubrication system as standard.
Thanks to adjustable tension rods, the drawbar can be infinitely adjusted to the tractor and the baler can always be aligned horizontally for optimum performance. Connection to the tractor is quick and easy thanks to just three hydraulic hoses.
EVEN FASTER BINDING
The Cerex 700 RC also sets new standards with its tying system. A hydraulic net brake ensures optimum net tension at all times, saving up to 15% material. Thanks to the net storage on the side as well as at the front, there are always up to three additional net
rolls on board. The net can be changed in just a few simple steps using the loading ramp. With Rollatex and Rollatex PRO, various heavy-duty wrapping nets with or without edge cover are available for the Cerex 700 RC.
The tying system of the Cerex 700 RC works with a so-called "duckbill". This feeding system in the form of a duckbill ensures that the net can be inserted quickly and precisely thanks to its pre-positioning. This saves valuable time when changing rolls, as there is no need for laborious threading.
GENTLE ON TURF AND SOIL
The large-volume tyre equipment up to 620/50-22.5 is an important step towards optimum soil and sward protection. With a wheel diameter of up to 1.17m, it is actually used on square balers and also offers excellent transport properties during road travel and first-class stability on slopes.
USER-FRIENDLY
ISOBUS operation of the new Cerex 700 RC is via the familiar, clearly laid out Cemis 700 terminal with a 7 inch colour display with touch function, 10 direct access buttons and a rotary pushbutton in the programme. Alternatively, the round baler can be operated via other suitable ISOBUS terminals.
CEREX 780 IN THE CLOUD
The new Cerex 700 RC is networked via Claas Connect using the cloud in the app or on the web. New machines are stored directly in the customer's Claas connect as part of the machine handover. This gives them continuous mobile access to digital operating instructions, the lubricant guide and the Claas Parts Shop for ordering original Claas lubricants, wear and spare parts.
Claas Connect also offers comprehensive machine and farm management functions that also support forage harvesting. For example, the integrated bale calculator makes it possible to calculate the required amount of net or twine so that you always have the right amount in stock. It is also possible to calculate the net or twine costs, which makes billing easier for contractors or inter-company use.
HORSCH CRUISER 12 XL WITH FLEXGRIP TINES

UKRAINIAN FARMERS VISIT UK AGRICULTURAL MACHINERY MANUFACTURER CLAYDON
Owners, senior managers and agronomists from agribusinesses in Ukraine have visited award-winning agricultural equipment manufacturer Claydon in the East of England. Claydon were delighted to welcome the group, which collectively farms almost one million hectares in Ukraine, including individual companies with up to 350,000ha.
The first-ever visit by customers from Ukraine, the four-day trip included a tour of Claydon’s factory in Suffolk to learn more about the company’s Opti-Till® Crop Establishment System and see its range of machinery being manufactured. They also toured the Claydon family’s arable farm and visited other leading agribusinesses which successfully use this approach to establish agricultural crops.
The group included Volodymyr Husiev, Key Account Manager for Technotorg LLC, Claydon’s sole distributor in Ukraine. Owned by Yuriy Kalyuzhnyy, it is the country’s largest agricultural machinery
sales company, with 25,000 customers, 35 sales/service offices in 23 regions and a 35% market share. Technotorg is based in the south of the country, at Mykolaiv on the Southern Bug River, close to the Black Sea.
Due to the ongoing conflict this was the first time that Claydon’s National Territory Manager for Ukraine & Kazakhstan, Anatoliy Penzin, had visited his employer since being appointed in August 2020.
Fluent in Ukrainian, Russian, and English, Anatoliy works closely with the Technotorg team to highlight the benefits of the Claydon Opti-Till® System to farmers. Simon Revell, Export Sales Manager, added: “The onerous travel restrictions which apply in Ukraine meant that this visit took months to organise but was highly successful. Farmers and supply chain businesses there face significant challenges but are keen to learn more about new developments in crop establishment and production technologies. Like their counterparts throughout the world, they are also
having to deal with the agronomic and fiscal impact of increasingly unpredictable weather patterns and more stringent environmental legislation, together with greater economic pressures due to rising input costs and static commodity prices.”
Ukraine has a mostly temperate climate with sufficient sunshine and year-round rainfall. The annual mean temperature is 7-9°C, with summer (May to July) temperatures from 18°C to 22°C and winter (December to March) temperatures from -4.8°С to 2°C. Precipitation falls predominately in summer months, with June and July typically having the highest rainfall (67mm).
FARMERS BENEFIT
Since Claydon sold its first machinery in Ukraine in 2017 an increasing number of farmers have enjoyed tangible benefits from using the company’s unique approach to crop establishment, providing them with a more secure future.
Opti-Till® provides farmers with a way to
transition from slow, expensive, energyintensive traditional methods to a much faster, highly efficient, more financially/ ecologically sustainable approach which fits perfectly with the ongoing transition to regenerative agricultural practices.
Enabling any seeds that can be air-sown, from herbs and grasses to cereals and maize, to be drilled at the right time, in the right conditions and ultimately produce high yields, Opti-Till® dramatically reduces the time, cost, machinery and labour required to establish agricultural crops. It also delivers many environmental advantages, including improved soil health and stability, improved moisture conservation and reduced erosion, along with higher levels of organic matter and lower carbon emissions, factors which are set to become increasingly important.
SUCCESSFUL ADOPTION
One of the first largest farming businesses in Ukraine to adopt the Claydon Opti-Till® System, Continental farms almost 200,000ha and over the last three years has very successfully used the system to establish crops such as oilseed rape, soy beans and wheat. This approach has dramatically improved the efficiency and effectiveness of crop establishment, with significant reductions in the number of tractors required, the amount of fuel used and in the
Viktor Serhiyovych, Farms Director at Viktoriya Farm, said: “High-quality crop establishment is the key to farming successfully. Without it you cannot expect to achieve high yields. Our region regularly suffers from a lack of rainfall and to optimise plant establishment, growth and development we must improve soil and sowing operations to retain water.
“Sowing seed at the correct depth, rate and distribution are vital. With our previous drill we had to compensate for low germination due to the lack of seedbed moisture by increasing the standard seed rate for winter wheat from 160 kg/ha to 250
Anatoliy Penzin, Claydon's National Territory Manager in Ukraine
kg/ha, wasting tonnes of seed every season. That made us reconsider our approach.
“When we saw the Claydon Opti-Till® System during a visit to Technotorg’s demonstration site in Vinnytsia our first impressions were positive. We immediately ordered a 4m Claydon Hybrid T4 trailed drill and used it to sow winter wheat. The results were very impressive and for the first time we achieved 100% germination.
“Opti-Till® combines the best elements of different seeding systems. It is very versatile, avoids bringing moist soil to the surface, evenly distributes seeds in bands at a consistent depth, is manufactured to an extremely high standard and has been very dependable, with low operating costs.”
labour required, an important consideration because of the ongoing conflict.

THE POWER OF PRESSURE DEMONSTRATED AT BASF DEMO DAY
At the recent BASF Demo Day, held at Hurcott Farm, Trelleborg Tires showcased the benefits of its advanced VF (Very High Flexion) tyre technology through a live in-field demonstration.
The event, hosted by Mark, Sue, and Andrew Doble, who manage the Hurcott Farm, offered the ideal setting to engage directly with farmers and contractors, and to demonstrate how the right tyre pressure can have a measurable impact on productivity, soil protection, and tyre longevity.
“Optimising tyre pressure between field and road applications is one of the most effective, yet often overlooked, ways to boost farm efficiency,” said Craig Churstain, Sales Manager at Trelleborg Tires, who led the field demonstration. “Lower pressure in the field means less soil compaction and healthier crops. On the road, it ensures better fuel efficiency and longer tyre life. It’s about getting the most from every working hour.”
Adapting tyre pressure to the specific needs of fieldwork versus road transport is essential to protect the soil, optimise traction and extend the life of the tyre. It’s a fundamental practice that can make a real difference to a farm’s performance – but it’s often underestimated,” said Craig Churstain.
Trelleborg tyres’ VF technology marks a major step forward in tyre engineering. Designed to operate at lower inflation pressures compared to standard tyres, VF tyres improve flotation by distributing weight across a wider footprint. The result is minimised soil compaction, better preservation of soil structure, and greater support for long-term yield potential.
The demonstration also featured Trelleborg’s ProgressiveTraction® tread design: a key innovation engineered
for both field grip and road comfort. Its dual-anchor lug system enhances traction in both vertical and horizontal directions, reducing slippage, improving fuel efficiency, and boosting operational performance, especially in soft or variable conditions. The Interlug system further enhances self-cleaning and stability.
To support professionals aiming to maximise value over time, Trelleborg Tires offers a certified 5,000-hour performance warranty on selected ProgressiveTraction® ranges (TM1000, TM900, TM800, TM1060), available exclusively through registration in the Premium Care Program.
Trelleborg Tires was supported at the event by C&O Tractors, Massey Ferguson specialists, whose contribution reinforced the value of integrating premium tyre technology with highperformance machinery in real working conditions.
“Farmers today are under constant pressure to do more with less,” added Craig Churstain. “Our mission is to provide tyre solutions that not only perform in the toughest conditions, but also support a more sustainable and profitable farming model.”
With ongoing investments in technology, product development and added services, Trelleborg Tires reaffirms its commitment to providing advanced, field-ready solutions that support sustainable farming, greater efficiency, and long-term value for professionals in the agricultural sector.
