LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP
JCB launched the 418S loading shovel in November 2013 to replace both the 414S and 416S. Offering increased power and a general hike in performance over its predecessors, the 418S was itself replaced by the current 419S in February 2017, this model also offering a further boost in performance. Over a decade on, a used entry level 418S may well be advertised for not far north of £30K as a private sale or non-dealer buy. That buys a lot of loader for your money on paper but you will need to spend more to secure a decent 418S from a JCB dealer or specialist.

When the JCB 418S was launched, it brought several developments over the 414S and enduringly popular 416S that it replaced. The 418S cab offered improved noise insulation, optional climate control and LED lighting, the rear chassis was a new design, the transmission was more sophisticated, the hydraulics were uprated and larger tyre options were available. The output from the Stage IV interim 6.7litre Cummins engine was raised from 123kW/165hp of the 416S to 129kW/173hp with torque increasing from 732Nm to 801Nm.
The 418S transmission moved to a new ZF six-speed with torque converter lock-up to boost performance in all six gears. Developments to the hydraulics were more modest, the 100cc pump used in 416S being carried over, but revised hose and valve sizes were said to improve efficiency. A standard fit hydraulically driven reversible engine cooling fan also helped cut fuel use. Transport speeds of 40kph or 48kph were offered, with the option to fit 750/50R26 tyres (the 416S maxed out on 620/70R26 rubber). All in, the 418S was a noticeable step up from the 416S.
Unfortunately, some 418S models could suffer from several problems. JCB

did resolve many of these before 418S production ceased in February 2017 but not before some users had more than their fair share of grief. The reputation of the 418S was tarnished as a result.
On paper, the key differences between the 418S and 419S are the incremental updates we come to expect with new model launches or a switch to the latest emission regs. With the 419S, there was the expected increase in power and lift capacity. But the changes went deeper. The rear chassis section was stretched by 300mm, and all up weight was increased by around a tonne. Rated lift capacity increased by 450kg to deliver a full-turn tipping load just shy of 6.9 tonnes, although the jib itself stuck to the same overall design as the 418S. The six-speed ZF transmission and six-pot Cummins engine remained too, albeit with the now Stage IV engine producing 135kW/183hp.
So far, much as you would expect. But JCB engineers had clearly learned a great deal from the 418S. The axles were swapped to the ZF design used on the heavier 435S. Not only did this allow the fitting of 750/65 R26 tyres, but the change also addressed problems that could plague the JCB axles used on some 418S models.

QUICK BASIC CHECKS
• Like all loading shovels/ telehandlers, if it moves it will wear. Check all linkage/pivot points on the boom. Autolube preferred to minimalise wear.
• Rock the machine forward an back with your foot on the brake. If you hear a clunk then the centre pivot might need bushing or shimming.
• Work the hydraulics to listen out for abnormal noises.
• Walk around the machine checking for leaks. Look over all sections of the cooling pack and check they are dry.
• Check air conditioning works.
• Test drive, listening for any abnormal knocks or whines in the driveline. Do this with the radio off!
• If you can, drop some oil from each axle and check for ‘metal’. This is the only way you can get an idea if a diff is on its way out.
• If in doubt, seek advice.
WHAT’S USED
This was typically down to failing differentials, although some had problems with the hubs and even the related drive shafts. Heavier duty upgrades had largely resolved axle problems on those 418S that had suffered but as not all needed work some may be unmodified.
It is suggested, however, that the main problem surrounding the 418S is the positioning of the hydraulic oil pump. In silage clamp building, the gradients involved could essentially see the hydraulic motor starved of oil that in turn would cause cavitation within the system. Among other problems, cooling capacity was reduced and with it the driveline suffered too.
As clamp building was seen as a key 418S task, a fair number of machines could give trouble but by no means not all. This is a point to consider when looking over a used 418S. Unless you know how a machine has been used, maintained, and possibly upgraded, there are numerous points you need to check.
A non-dealer 418S offered for sale at a tempting price, or a tidy looking example at auction, may look a sound potential but be careful. If you are tempted, find out

Even before you look at a 418S, it pays to do some leg work. If not, you could end up viewing a machine that will need some costly love. This is not meant to put buyers off a 418S, with the same applying to pretty much any item of used equipment. The point here is that there were a few 418S that could make a troublesome used buy. A sound example, on the other hand, can deliver good value. Our advice is to seek the help of a JCB dealer or trusted specialist.
WHAT ABOUT THE 419S?
As previously mentioned, the JCB 419S is far more than just an update of the 418s. The front and rear chassis design was completely revised, with a boost in strength, and with longer wheelbase for added stability and the space to accommodate the same heavy-duty axles fitted to 435S. Not only can these axles run on the same 750/65 R26 tyres as fitted to the 435S, a choice of limited slip and locking front differentials were offered. Note also the choice of standard and high lift jibs, with load-over heights of 3.48m to 3.71m.
WHAT’S USED
COMMANDPLUS CAB
JCB launched the CommandPlus cab for the 435S back in 2015, the 419S inheriting the same design. All round visibility in both 418S and 419S cabs is decent, but in all other respects the CommandPlus is superior. From the seat, a 419S will feel a ‘generation’ ahead of the 418S. The later cab’s instruments include an LCD display for key vehicle information plus help menus, ability to show the image from a reversing camera and the ability to list service checks. A secondary screen is used to adjust work settings such as the auxiliary hydraulic flow rate, loader arm suspension engagement speed, auto engine shut-off timer and engine fan reversing intervals. Various options to include work light packs, heated and cooled seats, a cool box or even a carpet. But even the basic cab spec includes climate control, with smaller niceties such as a quick reminder menu display and set and forget adjustable steering column that returns to the operator’s favoured position when moved to ease getting in and out of the cab.
JCB 419S MOVE TO STAGE V
In 2019, the JCB 419S Cummins 6.7 litre engine needed to be fitted with a DPF diesel
DO NOT OVERLOOK 418S ADVANTAGES OVER 414S AND 426S
• Far superior cab, with more space for taller operators.
• Much improved visibility.
• LED lights make big difference at night.
• TorqueLock boosts performance.
• 48KPH road speed.
• Overall hydraulic and engine performance improved
The cab of a 418S is more confined than the 419S and does without some key developments but it remains a decent place to work and does not feel dated. The cab floor on the 418S can also become very warm, making the cab feel hot as the air con struggles. Check front windscreen section seals. These can fail but a fix is possible.
particulate filter to meet Stage V emission regulations. JCB LiveLink telematics are used to monitor the status of the filter so regeneration or servicing requirements can be remotely monitored. Other data to include fuel use and operating
hours are also recorded. From a used buyer’s perspective, telematic monitoring is good news. Dealers can keep an eye on the shovels servicing needs and more easily record a host of data. This can be a real plus when it comes to checking a used buy. >>
Push-back pick-up hitch with hydraulic brake and trailer tipping valves popular option that will cost a fair amount to retrofit if needed.
WHAT’S USED
Front view from 418S is good, but later 419S does offer a better overall operator experience. If possible, drive the machine over to a dry surface and leave the loader running for a few minutes. This can make it easier to pick up any drips should there be a leak somewhere.
The lower articulation pivot on the 418S may benefit from a new pin and bush with a check for wear in the UJ. Look for play in the driveshaft mount and weeping steering rams. The oil in the hydraulic oil tank reservoir should look clean. Give the filler cap a sniff. If you smell ‘burnt’ oil it is a potential sign of either a past or future problem.
Apart from further cleaning the exhaust emissions, the Stage V power units are fitted with a revised electronic management system. In broad outline, the operator can select between two power outputs. Standard mode limits output to 107kW /144hp and 660Nm of torque at 2,050rpm, which is ample to match road travel and relatively light handling and loading operations. Dynamic gives full access to the revised engines maximum output of 145kW / 195hp. This is up 6.5% from the Stage IV engine. Torque in this mode also climbs by 5% to 881Nm, a noticeable boost that users will appreciate when clamp building. Switching between the two power modes can be on the move using the ‘DYN’ button located on the ‘B’ pillar.
NOTE: When Dynamic mode has been selected, the setting is memorised for two hours after the engine switch off after which the settings revert to standard power. There is also an Auto-Stop feature. This will shut down the engine if it is left idling longer than an adjustable pre-set time limit. If the engine shuts off from idle when you are looking over a Stage V 419S for no apparent reason, don’t panic!
Some detail changes made to the 419S at this point include different rear work lights settings so they can automatically come on when reverse is selected plus be able to set the front-mounted work lights to light up when switching from low to high beam in transport. A forward-facing roof camera was also made available.
Other detail refinements include rubber cushion pads on the front face of the rear chassis to eliminate the ‘knock’ when steering to full lock, and a change to the engine air filter to a position immediately behind the cab where it is easier to reach.
PRE-VIEWING ADVICE
No apologies for concentrating mainly upon the 418S. If you are buying outside the JCB dealer network, or from a trusted specialist, you really do need to be extra diligent with these models.
WHAT’S USED
DETAIL SPECIFICATIONS
As a used buyer, the machine you buy will have been specified to meet the demands of the original owner. As a simple example, the 419S Contractor Pro variant has cosmetic and comfort enhancing niceties to include a stainless exhaust stack, heated and ventilated half leather seat, a cool box, cab carpet and all-round LED work lights. That’s the tinsel. Dig deeper, and there are far more features to consider. Using the 419S as an example, it may have:
• Joystick or rarer multi-lever controls
• Three or four auxiliary valves
• Auxiliary flow rate adjusted through the secondary display
• Limited slip diffs front and rear axles or auto difflock front, open rear
• Industrial quick-hitch with hydro locking or industrial Q-fit carriage. Latter compatible with some Loadall and TM loader attachments
• Choice of parallel or non-parallel lift
• ‘Fast flick’ smaller crowd rams for silage work or 25% more powerful standard rams
• Pick-up hitch or Rockinger hitch
• Auto lube, belly guards, smooth ride system etc.
The above are the basics. You need to check as these machines are built to a specific customer order.
Cab of the 419S has a more modern feel, with the LCD displays making it straightforward to adjust certain operating parameters.
WHAT’S USED
It is also important to note that there is a world of difference between a well looked after and updated 418S to one that has been worked hard but not received any TLC in return. It is only those who really know these machines that will know where and what to look for.
NOTE: Beware private buys with a low sticker price. Worn tyres and scruffy appearance can account for some reduction, but a temptingly low price may suggest something else needs a fix.
TAKE YOUR TIME
A simple approach is to do all the checks you would make when preparing the machine for work if it has not been used for a while. This will include checking all fluid levels, looking for leaks from the lift, crowd and tilt rams and the articulation rams and pivots. This will give you an idea of the machine’s general condition. As to the engine, modern power units should have a clean exhaust and the engine should settle to a quiet and smooth idle. With the engine running, look over the exhaust manifold and air intake system. It will take a good couple of hours to really look over any model, the more so with
Secondary 419S display can be used to quickly swap between standard and dynamic power modes , factory installed camera automatically displaying here when reverse is selected.
a non-dealer prepared used buy. These loading shovels need to be run up to working temperature to include thoroughly warming the hydraulics by carrying out simple working cycles under some load. In the cab, you can obviously work through the screen menus to
check hours and other data.
If you like what you see on a non-dealer buy, make a note of the machine’s serial number and, if there is a dealer sticker showing who sold the machine originally, give them a call. This is not a cop out. This is
Model specs – for guidance only.
WHAT’S USED
It is hard to miss the machines serail number and specification label on the front section of the shovel. Armed with the machine’s serial number you may be able to trace the machine’s history through a JCB dealer.
a sensible way to approach buying what is a high-cost item of capital equipment. Tell the dealer you are looking to buy the machine and ask if they can help regarding its history. If the machine has moved out of their ‘patch’, they may suggest you get in touch with your nearest JCB dealer. It will be them, after all, who you will deal with for servicing. >>
A PIVOTAL ALTERNATIVE?
Do you really need the muscle of a nominal 180hp loading shovel? Do you need its potential 6.5 tonne plus of lift capacity? Maybe for some jobs, but how about year-round versatility? JCB dealers are finding several potential 419S customers have taken a sideways look at the 129kW/173hp TM420S as an alternative. With 4,100kg of lift, and pivot steering the TM will not have the same capacities or be quite the same clamp champ as the 419S. These models will lift a load to 5.45m with 3.0m reach. The bad news? A sound used TM420S with sensible hours will have a starting price that could hover around £90,000 plus. Versatility comes at a price.
The cooling pack of the 418S is well able to cope with arduous working conditions but perhaps less so when the shovel is working up steep clamp faces. Current 419S (right) benefits from an enhanced cooling package that should be on top of keeping the hydraulics and engine cool in all conditions.
GIVE A DOG A BAD NAME…
JCB 418S shovels have earned a less than stellar reputation. Problems listed could include axle differential and half shaft failures and hydraulic pumps giving trouble. The insulation on the bottom of the cab was not always up to the job either, resulting in a floor that becomes more than a little warm at times, all the more noticeable if the air conditioning wasn’t working as well as it should.
Not all 418S models had problems, some just doing the job with nothing more than routine servicing, with others being troublesome. JCB and its dealers worked hard to resolve the problems, with the 419S appearing to address all the problems that could plague some of its predecessors. A dealer sourced 418S should have the key problem areas sorted out, but seek advice. You may be better buying a 419S or moving up to the muscle of 435S.
WHAT’S USED
HOW BIG A BUCKET OR FORK?
JCB offered two bucket options to fit the 419S, with respective volumes of 1.4m3 and 1.6m3. There are clearly a wide range of buckets that can fit these shovels but be aware that the shape of the bucket is important as some designs are constructed to meet the crowd and dump angles of specific machines. JCB forks include a 3.62m wide design with the nominal capacity to shift 5.50m³ of maize or grass. Folding side extensions reduce the fork’s transport width to 2.97m, an alternative design having a larger 7.2m3 capacity but a narrower 2.64m folded width. In brief, make no assumptions with regard to the size of fork if offered with a used buy.
An industrial attachment carriage with hydraulic locking pins is a common fit, but a JCB Q-fit alternative is available and makes a good choice if you want to share attachments with a Loadall or TM pivot steer loader.
BUY A LOWER COST 418S OR SPEND MORE ON A 419S?
The six-cylinder Cummins engine powers both the JCB418S and 419S, the latter moving to Stage V in 2019. This saw the engines fitted with a DPF filter. Although it is good to view a cleaned machine, viewing a used by ahead of a wash can make it easier to spot any evidence of fluid leaks and evidence of overheating.
A JCB 418S can make a solid used buy if you secure the right machine at the right price and then look after it. There are those who suggest these models are not really the best choice for more intensive clamp building, but even a well-used 418S can make a great muck and bulk handling tool. Match it to the job in other words.
Although the 419S shares much of its design DNA with the 418S it benefits from design changes plus the axles from the heavier 435S. If you are looking for a shovel that will be up to building grass and maize silage clamps, but you are not after the capacity of a larger 435S, then a 419S makes a better used buying choice for this type of work than a 418S. Simple.
SUMMARY
When asking around for some buying tips, we found there was a consensus that a 418S loading shovel is a good piece of kit in applications other than intensive clamp building that calls for work up a steep gradient. Looking for a hefty muck
shifter or bulk bucket handler? Then a wellprepared 418S can make a sound used buy. If you are after a nominal 10tonne class JCB shovel that can build a steep clamp, then it is the 419S that should be on your used buying radar. Not only will these machines be newer, with later examples possibly benefitting from a decent warranty, they will hold onto their residual value better too, the more so if you use dealer servicing.
JCB dealers will have the best choice of 419S machines, older 418S models that pass through their hands typically being better examples with a known history and record of any upgrades that have been applied. If you do not think you have a ‘dealer budget’ and are tempted to go through an auction or private buy for a 418S and even a 419S, be careful. Call a JCB dealer, or trusted equipment specialist, and see what they can offer. You may be surprised by their prices.

RICHARD PIERCE LIFE CELEBRATED
Endeavour greeted everyone at St Mary’s Church, Hadlow on Monday 5 January
Over 250 people made their way on Monday 5 January to St Mary’s Church, Hadlow, Kent for the Richard Pierce (died 3 December 2025) memorial service in very cold but bright conditions. It was further enlivened by the sight outside the church of 1920 Fowler A9 7hp no. 14754 road locomotive Endeavour. Richard brought this engine with his brother William from Stoke Claire, Suffolk in 1967 and it has been rallied ever since and has now been rebuilt twice in their ownership.
A devout Christian all his life Richard was a Sunday school teacher for some ten years and as we spoke last month a fine leader of so much and an excellent farmer. His three children Clare, Howard and Duncan paid thoughtful tributes to their father, granddaughter Naomi Foster read
the lesson and goddaughter Priscilla Mills lead the prayers whose husband Reverend Tim Mills conducted the service admirably in the warm surroundings. The church organ was exceptionally well played by chairman of the Weald of Kent Traction Engine Society Will Pierce who is Richard’s grandson of course.
The wake took place in the church itself as film and pictures were shown of Richard and Marilyn and the Pierce family. It brought back many happy memories for so many here of this greatly respected man. He was known as ‘Mr Cool’, his son Duncan said he was not always like that. He was a good man who did lots of good for other people and very much encouraged them to get the best out of their life in so many ways including the writer and that’s what counts really.

IT PAYS TO INVEST IN MEMORABILIA
As we said in our last issue H J Pugh attracted a huge crowd for their festive sale on Saturday 6 December which featured the late Nick Baldwin literature collection, which went on to raise £40,000 plus. Nick worked for me from the very first Tractor & Machinery magazine in November 1994 with his tractor A-Z section which didn’t finish until 2017.
Much of his research material from this series was part of this sale as was so many of the French and continental material he had collected from his many excursions to these parts remembering that Nick and Julie went to live in France for approximately 10 years, which was not the happiest of times for this couple one way or another and they returned to north Devon for peace and happiness until lung cancer took Nick early in 2024, remembering he never smoked.
He was professional journalist all his life and his amazing car literature collection had been purchased by the British Motor
Museum at Gaydon, following a lottery grant before he died. It had been hoped the same could happen with his agricultural and lorry collection, but it was not to be.
It took me some 2.5 days to collate the collection together into 361 lots required by H J Pugh, before staff photographed and catalogued the collection thanks to Will Hadland’s efforts and others. However before this section were some 49 lots of AGCO family memorabilia with the Wallis Tractor Co flag starting at £120 leading onto a Massey Ferguson 35in x 60in flag at £300 and others made similar money.
The Baldwin collection started off with Automower and Bray literature at £120, the EBRO literature including MF sold for £380 early on. Some £100 was paid for the Hanomag literature and similar money was paid for the Nuffield, Valmet and Mercedes MB Trac literature lots. Things hotted up with the four Marshall lots, the first was £220 for assorted literature and photos,
the second one was the big lot with £1,250 paid for the 1936 catalogue and photos. The third featured a very rare MP6 single leaflet besides a Series 1 Contractor Mk2 catalogue and others which raised £1,800; yes you did read that correctly. The last Marshall lot featured later 1980s catalogue material which raised only £60, again showing the later classic market across the board is perhaps not that hot like it was. However £310 was paid for the JCB material and £100 for the Minneapolis-Moline literature, photos and repair manual for the Z model.
Next on was a colourful 1930 Garrett
AGE tractor brochure and some leaflets raised £520. The Oliver literature lot for the 70, 80 and 90 models with photographs was yours at £200. As for the circa 1930 Rushton material that was used in Nick’s pioneering Prince Marshall published 1970s vintage tractor hardback volumes sold for £400. Doing well was the Massey-Harris Wallis 20/30 Certified brochure and 12/20
special instruction book at £320, but the one that they all wanted was the 1924 Fiat 702 maintenance booklet at £960. The 1918 Crawley Agrimotor brochure and the very, very rare Boon motor tractor booklet sold for £1,400. The best in the Austin lots was the 1919 owners handbook and parts list £650.
After the completion of the Baldwin section we came across a Ford – New Holland 78in x 74in flag selling for £320 and a similar price for a Massey Ferguson 144in x 44in flag and the 32ft of MF bunting flags £300. As for the good looking original Ford tractor illuminated clock in working order raised £800 here. An original set of 39 1957/8 MF instruction books for implements with booklets and paperwork from a 1957 Ferguson Stoneleigh course raised £700. To finish it all off, the tatty red 1960s Sperry period New Holland 24in x 36in alloy sign was got away at a good £460 and the Triang tin MF pedal tractor signs made £460 and £320 respectively.
All in all a very satisfactory sale for everyone and thanks to Henry Cole’s multiple Shed and Buried TV series featuring memorabilia, prices for such material has been a sure bet to put their money in for collectors in 2025. Just before Christmas I left a £140 bid on a small Tylers of Tonbridge sign, a company I worked for on a Friday evening and Saturday morning in the 1960s. I was out bid by £40! Still my 1960s Foden lapel tie badge sold in the same sale for £30, which I was well pleased with.
£320 was paid for the Massey Ferguson tin sign 19.5in x 19.5
The tatty red 1960s New Holland 24in x 36in alloy sign was got away at a good £460
£800 was paid for the Ford Tractors illuminated clock
The Case DEX took box sold for £150 the vendor paid £5 for it
There were a number of British Tractor and Farm Machinery year books offered this 1960 example made £120

There were so many road runs over the holiday period here are a few I was invited to.
HASTINGS WESTFIELD LIGHT ROAD RUN
On Saturday 20 December at 5.15pm in Old Town, Hastings, East Sussex some 180, yes that many tractors started off on a 16 mile road run to raise money for charity along with classic lorries and cars watched by over 5,000 people around the route, in fact many of the tractors did not get back to the start until 9pm.
The event was organised by the well known Andy Munday and his helpers from Rural Times Past rally (which raised over £20,000 for charity in 2025), particularly Jon Playfoot

and Trevor to name but a few. There were problems staging this event and cost the organisers £8,000 just for the insurance.
The tractors toured around Ore, Westfield, where they took in the famous Christmas lights then on through St Leonards and back where they started. The whole route was packed with families and friends who had come to support this amazing well organised event thanks to the teams efforts at the time of writing the amount raised is not known, but we will tell you in our next issue.

HILLBILLY CHRISTMAS ROAD RUN
Staged by Dave Hodges and family and members of the South East division of the Ford and Fordson Association, it saw some 52 tractors assemble at main organiser Dave Hodges premises near Otford, Sevenoaks, Kent on Sunday 21 December.
The event raised £1,883 in aid of Kent Air Ambulance and is hugely popular locally as the Hillbilly road runners travelled along the way
through the Ecclestone family St Clare Estate to The Bell Inn where a break was taken. The tractor drivers were all suitably dressed mostly in Father Christmas outfits as they headed to Kemsing and then passed the Bucks Head Inn at Godden Green.
Later on the highlight was travelling through Sevenoaks high street which was lined by 1,000s of people who all enjoyed the occasion. It

Arriving on site is the Field Marshall Series One Contractor
Sunday 28 December saw at Colin Evan’s premises near Uckfield the High Weald Working Rally team out in action at their annual threshing day in glorious sunshine. As always it proved very popular with original style equipment used all day. This included Dave Mansi Foster threshing drum with Cameron Kemp’s Ransomes Lorant low density baler in action.
This year the team used Will Mansi’s Field Marshall Series One Contractor Mk2 which has recently had its exhaust cleaned out; this

They were joined by the Langley’s 1895 ex John Allan of Oxford Fowler A4 6hp traction engine No.7459 Endurance which Allan’s sold in their famous 1939 sale just as WW2 broke out as they got out of the unprofitable steam threshing business at the time, which was perhaps five years to early, but hindsight is a great thing. The day went well indeed with the equipment running well and maintenance needed was limited. We thank Bryan Kemp, Barney Davis and Harry Day for their pictures of the occasion.
looks like a record amount has been raised from the event which saw the biggest collection of Fordson Dexta’s and E1A Majors on the road during the Festive season that’s for sure. Congratulations to everyone involved on this essentially restored tractor road run.

BIGGEST BOXING DAY EVENT
The Six Bells Road Run is the biggest Boxing Day vintage tractor road run of its kind in the UK today and features mostly classic and some vintage tractors.
It starts from Burgess Engineering’s premises at Cross In Hand, East Sussex. The first event saw Brian Tompsett organising the route and Jeff Burgess preparing his garage so everyone could take part with free refreshments and mince pies.
Our correspondent created the publicity and phoned up a number of friends to ask them to take part and in the end 29 tractors came to

KUHN ADDS 6.1M MODEL TO MULTI-LONGER RANGE
Kuhn Farm Machinery has added to its Multi-Longer range of hedge and verge cutters with the introduction of a 6.1m model. The 6157 e-TPAL joins the Multi-Longer 7457 e-TPAL as telescopic, left-handed machines, designed specifically for UK and Irish users.
Rhodri Jenkins, Kuhn’s grassland product specialist, said: “The 6157 is likely to be a popular model with UK contractors and farmers, offering the right balance of compact dimensions for road work and excellent reach for field hedges and ditches.”
The Multi-Longer 6157 e-TPAL is fitted as standard with the e-ASSIST system. This maintains a constant cutting head angle on the machine for an even and consistent finish via an electronic parallelogram, using sensors to control the position. An automatic lift float in all positions for roadside mowing is also part of the feature, while a hydraulically powered debris blower can be mounted on the rear of the Multi-Longer to leave surfaces clear of trimmings.
Rhodri continued: “e-ASSIST allows a consistent cutting head angle and arm height regardless of the working reach. Working on uneven field edges can cause issues whilst trying to maintain a level finish and the e-ASSIST feature aims to make this easier.”
The e-TPAL feature also includes the EP joystick, offering the control of all four proportional movements at the same time. This, combined with Kuhn’s VT 61 terminal, provides instant display of
key machine data and quick access to settings, such as the control of the parallelogram movement. Rhodri said that a redesigned joystick will be added soon.
The machine is only available with the Stabilink axle mounted brackets, which can be connected to the tractor in under 15 minutes, for greater assurance at full reach. A heavy-duty A-frame is in development. A standard 1.2m wide head, or optional 1.5m wide unit, (24 or 28 T-flails respectively) allow users to build a machine that is tailored to their circumstances. A tractor weighing 5.5t, and a minimum of 100hp, is required.
AGRII PARTNERS WITH TELUS TO DRIVE THE EVOLUTION TO AGRICULTURE 5.0
Agrii has announced a new partnership with TELUS Agriculture and Consumer Goods that will transform how farm data are connected and used across digital technologies.
The collaboration, unveiled at the Oxford Farming Conference, will integrate Agrii’s Contour platform with TELUS Crop Management, bringing greater interoperability across a farm’s digital ecosystem.
Dr Ruth Mann, head of Integrated Crop Technologies at Agrii, said the partnership supports the industry’s move towards Agriculture 5.0 – the next stage in the evolution of farming, building on precision technologies while keeping farmers and agronomists central to decision-making.
“We have been looking at how artificial intelligence (AI) can take all of the big data available – such as from sensors, satellites, drones, AI and other emerging technologies – and pull it together to provide better analytics,” she said.
“Through our collaboration with TELUS, that is exactly what we will now be able to achieve, freeing up time to focus on the things that really matter when it comes to optimising agronomic decisions.”
Dr Mann said the defining feature of Agriculture 5.0 is the role of people in the system, with technology designed to support rather than replace human judgement.
“The real benefit of Agriculture 5.0 is that it places the human back at the centre as an integral part of the crop production system,” she explained.
“We can use AI to analyse data and identify trends and risks in real time, then supply that information back to the agronomist and the farmer, who can make the final decisions using their experience and historic knowledge.”
Ben Haton
Dr Mann pointed to results from Agrii’s digital technology farm trials as evidence that this approach can deliver clear commercial returns.
“When we start to use technology there is usually an increase in input costs, and we did see around a 7% rise in this particular winter wheat trial,” she said.
“However, those costs were offset by more targeted decision-making, with yields increasing by around 0.8 tonnes per hectare through the combined use of data, AI, and farmer and agronomist insight.”

THE MULTI-USE MULCHER
Keeping on top of grass and weed growth between the rows is a vital task, to reduce competition, improve airflow, and just make the place look a bit neater write Matt Pinninton of Haynes.
With a plethora of options of machinery available to growers, taking time to pick the correct one can save money, but can also save valuable time that will significantly add up over the course of the year, so a versatile machine has huge advantages.
The BV mulcher available from Clemens is a true all-rounder, with four sizes available – each with a variable width deck, to cater for variations in rows or row spacing in different vineyards. Across the range, the total working width varies from 1,150mm-2,500mm, although the L model with 1,400mm-1,900mm cutting width is the
bread-and-butter machine for the UK, suiting the majority of 2m or 2.2m rows.
Each mower is built in three parts; a central bed to which the main gearbox is mounted, then two decks that slide up and down twin bars with bronze bushes, powered by hydraulic rams. This means the width can be adjusted on the move from inside the cab, using a double acting spool – perfect for vineyards planted in the days before GPS!
Power is transmitted from the tractor PTO into a heavy duty gearbox protected by a slip clutch, then out to two further (or three in the case of the XXL machine) bevel gearboxes. These are connected by sliding
PTO shafts, to allow them to move in and out when the deck width is adjusted. Each rotor is equipped with two free moving blades for a fast chopping speed at low engine RPM, improving operator comfort inside the cab and reducing fuel consumption.
The mulcher can be used throughout the year for usual grass maintenance, as well as in the winter or spring to mulch prunings. The 8mm steel deck is shaped to hold material in the mower for longer, meaning a thorough and consistent chop of even the thickest, chewiest wood. Height adjustments are made simply by moving the four steel support wheels up and down, along with the stainless scrapers.
One can imagine the degree of frustration felt by the operator while mowing the grass in the spring or summer, watching the weeds crawl past unaffected, knowing that before long they’ll be driving down this row all over again to knock them down as well. To this end, Clemens have designed the latest iteration of the mulcher to act as a tool carrier, allowing operators to mow the grass and also control weeds in one pass, saving time, fuel and easing ground compaction.
There are two weed control options available – the first is a pair of Multiclean heads, mounted on the rear corners of the mulcher using the heavy-duty brackets that
are in-built to each deck. These machines are increasingly popular for those wanting to knock back weeds early on in the season, and those looking to combine spring weed control with bud-rubbing. Each head can be adjusted individually, and is hydraulically driven –there are options to either control the flow manually on the machine, or to include electro-hydraulic control to enable left and right shut-off, to enable efficient use in rows of uneven lengths.
The second option is to fit finger rollers to the front corners of the mulcher – these can be combined with poly finger hoes on the rear corners. Together, these machines
will work the soil underneath and between the vines to provide simple, cost-effective weed control – the finger rollers work the soil undervine aggressively, while the finger hoes work gently in between and around the trunks to prevent the issue of a ridge forming. Each tool can be either manually engaged, or engaged hydraulically from the cab – this option means the tools can be lifted out of work to either work the end rows, or to shorten the overall length to make headland turns easier.
The BV mulcher is available for demonstration across the south from Haynes Agricultural.
NEXT GENERATION OF DAIRY LIGHTING IS DRIVING MILK YIELDS
An innovative new cow-specific lighting system with automated dimming to mimic sunrise and sunset is set to be launched by DairyLight at next month’s DairyTech event.
Dr Torjus Baalack, director of DairyLight, said the new system has been designed to help stabilise milk yields and counter seasonal drops during the winter months.
“This development builds on the proven benefits of the original system, with the new generation designed to further support cow comfort and performance,” he explained.
“We are constantly looking to innovate our technology to deliver an even bigger impact for farmers installing our lighting systems.”
Dr Baalack added: “The next generation of lighting now has automated dimming built in to mimic the sun rising and setting.
“This means the lighting in sheds for dairy cows housed entirely indoors or just for winter, is closer to their natural environment – improving cows’ wellbeing and performance.”
He said the newer LED lighting builds on the benefits of the company’s first-generation lighting.
The lights simulate the cows’ natural
circadian rhythm – using blue-enriched white light for 16-18 hours a day to copy the long summer days, followed by red light at night, Dr Baalack explained. “The vision behind our lighting systems is to carefully influence milk-producing hormones to support higher yields, and with our current system we’ve seen an average milk yield increase of 9% per cow,” he said.
Dr Baalack explained how during sunrise when the natural daylight increases, the new generation dairy lights automatically dim out to maintain a minimum light level exceeding 200 lux – a measure of light intensity – to keep in sync with the cows’ natural body clock.
“Normally in darkness, cows produce melatonin – a hormone that signals rest whilst reducing the stress hormone, cortisol, thus helping regulate the immune and metabolic function of the cow,” he added.
“Cows can’t see red light when it is on at night, so this means cows remain in night physiological state.
“However, we can – and thanks to this, the staff can work at night while the cows are allowed to rest, which reduces stress for both staff and the herd.”
The 24-hour automation of the light system means farmers do not have to worry about forgetting to turn lights on and off which helps reduce electricity costs.
“A further addition is a built-in Bluetooth control panel, so that settings can be changed from the comfort of your phone, as the panels are often in hard-to-reach places,” he added.
Coupled with these benefits, Dr Baalack said DairyLight’s research has shown that LED lighting of this type can support better fertility, shortened calving intervals, and stronger bulling activity.
“It is an exciting change for DairyLight and we will be undertaking a phased roll-out over the next two years,” he added.
“The first-generation lights have achieved excellent results, and we are looking forward to seeing the next generation rolled out onto more commercial farms.”

BIODEGRADABLE NATURE EASYSLEEVE FOR HEDGE AND SMALL-SCALE PLANTING PROTECTION
Tubex, a brand of Magnera, has launched Nature Easysleeve, a new addition to its biodegradable tree protection portfolio, developed specifically for hedge planting and small-scale landscaping schemes where collection at end of life may be difficult or impractical.
Designed to provide cost effective early-stage protection while naturally biodegrading in situ, Tubex Nature Easysleeve offers a lightweight, practical solution for slender plants used in hedgerows and similar planting environments. The shelters are expected to perform for up to three years, supporting survival and establishment during the most vulnerable early stages of growth.
Nature Easysleeve is manufactured from a bio-based material blend derived from plant and vegetable sources. The material has been independently tested to demonstrate biodegradability both on soil and in soil at ambient temperatures, breaking down over time through a natural microbiological process. The product has also been tested against OECD 207 and 208, and it is non-toxic, supporting its use in environmentally sensitive planting schemes.
The shelters feature Tubex’s proven twin-wall design, creating a protective microclimate around young plants while maintaining strength and stability. Available in 0.6 metre and 0.75 metre heights, Nature Easysleeve is supplied nested for efficient transportation
and storage. With smaller diameters than standard tree shelters, Nature Easysleeve is suited to hedge planting and light landscaping applications, where ease of installation and reduced material weight are important considerations. The shelters are installed using a bamboo cane for support and do not require fixing ties, allowing for rapid deployment on site.
The launch of Nature Easysleeve reflects growing demand for biodegradable tree protection solutions in locations where retrieval and recycling are not feasible. It complements the existing Tubex Nature range, offering land managers, contractors and planting organisations a broader choice of protection options based on site access, planting scale and end-of-life considerations.
FARMING LEADERS BACK TECH TO CUT UK FARM ASSURANCE BURDEN
UK farm assurance is embracing technology to reduce burden, improve efficiency, and enhance confidence across the supply chain, industry leaders confirmed during a session at this month’s Oxford Farming Conference, organised and sponsored by Map of Ag.
The session, ‘Building Smarter Farm Assurance: From Review to Reality ’, comes 12 months after the UK Farm Assurance Review, commissioned by AHDB and the NFU, highlighted the need for a transformational step forward in technology, data management, and collaboration.
Map of Ag’s Rob Burgess, said: “The aim of the Farm Assurance Review was to look at the whole farm assurance process, see how it delivers value to the different stakeholders such as farmers and supply chain consumers, and effectively make recommendations for how it could be improved going forwards.”
Philippa Wiltshire, Director of Standards and Operations at Red Tractor, explained how Red Tractor, which covers over 40,000 British farms, is already turning the Review’s recommendations into action by developing technology-enabled solutions to reduce duplication and audit burdens.
Red Tractor has upgraded its online filing cabinet into an efficiency tool that farmers can use year-round, not just before inspections, and is in the process of introducing innovations such as photobased records and guidance on prioritising high-impact documents.
“We’re upgrading the Red Tractor Members Portal to make it an easier and more efficient way to stay on top of paperwork”, Mrs Wiltshire explained. “Using the portal means assessors will be able to spend less time during a farm visit looking at paperwork, reducing the length of their visit.”
She also shared details of collaboration in the dairy sector with the Tesco Sustainable
Dairy Group to reduce the audit burden.
“Before, these farmers were having additional audits and separate inspectors. By working in partnership with Tesco, we were able to offer farmers the ability to be able to use our portal, to be able to upload records that they needed for that customer.”
Mrs Wiltshire did emphasise the need for farmers to retain full control of their data. “The data is the farmer’s data, and the farmer needs control over that data all the time. Red Tractor doesn’t see and has no access to anything the farmer puts on the portal; it’s purely the assessor.”
Providing an on-farm view, tenant dairy and beef farmer David Christensen who farms in Oxfordshire outlined the complexity of operating across multiple assurance and customer schemes, while stressing their importance to UK food credibility.
“These schemes are hugely important. They are not universally popular sometimes with farmers, but we’ve got really good food credibility in the UK, and we need something standing behind that to justify the standards and justify the claims.”
Mr Christensen was clear that the issue is not assurance itself, but how it is delivered.
“The most exhausting part of farming today is not the farming, it’s the paperwork.”
He highlighted duplication across schemes as a major source of frustration, praising recent progress where inspections have been combined.
“Hats off to Tesco and Red Tractor for
getting that together, because so much of it was overlapping, it was bonkers.”
Looking ahead, Mr Christensen suggested that the next step must be automation rather than repeated manual data entry.
“We have talked about only entering data once, but better for me is automatic data collection. There is a mass of data already there in systems like BCMS, herd management software, robots and milk recording that could be picked up automatically.”
He also called for better alignment across schemes. “It drives me mad when I’m having to assess animals with a different scale for different organisations. Wherever possible, can we not align measures?”
Mr Christensen suggested that assurance could deliver greater value by combining compliance with practical support and benchmarking. “There’s a real opportunity for looking at the data to do some benchmarking and comparing how I’m getting on.”
Phil Pearson, Development Director at APS Group, the UK’s largest tomato grower for high street stores, explained how robotics, precision breeding, and automated data collection are already being used to streamline audits and support compliance across multiple standards in that sector.
However, all speakers stressed that technology alone is not enough. Success requires collaboration across farmers, certification bodies, retailers, and policy makers, while ensuring systems remain affordable and sector appropriate.

LANDMARK YEAR FOR LAMMA 2026 WITH RECORD-BREAKING ATTENDANCE AND EXHIBITOR NUMBERS
More than 45,000 people and over 800 exhibitors descended on the NEC Birmingham, marking the highest attendance in the event’s 44-year history. For the first time, the show joined forces with CropTec and Low Carbon Agriculture Show, creating an expanded hub of information and innovation under one roof.
Alongside a wide range of machinery launches and live demonstrations, several new features debuted in 2026, including a Dairy & Beef Hub, Innovation Trail and the Future in Farming Zone, all designed to support the next generation of farmers.
FOCUS ON THE NEXT GENERATION
The role of young people was a central theme throughout the event, highlighted by Kaleb Cooper and Tom Pemberton launching the 2026 Young British Farming Awards. Now in its third year, the awards celebrate emerging talent and recognise how the next
generation is positively shaping British farming.
This message continued during the How can we make regenerative farming profitable? panel, where David Exwood, Deputy President of the NFU, said: “If we want profitable, sustainable regenerative farming in this country, we need to get
young people involved. They work differently, think differently and approach challenges in new ways. If regenerative farming is to succeed, we must hand the business to the next generation.”
Commenting on labour shortages in the dairy supply chain, Hugh Pocock, Founding Director at Cultura Connect said: “The Clarkson effect has certainly made people look at the industry, but we have to keep promoting that. Most of the next generation are on social media and that is the place we need to start.”
CELEBRATING INNOVATION
The 2026 LAMMA Innovation Awards recognised outstanding engineering, creativity and forward-thinking solutions designed to solve real-world challenges faced by farmers.
Agro-Vital was announced as the overall winner for their pioneering solution TRIPLEX, chosen from a group of exceptional Gold Award winners from eight categories.
TRIPLEX is an advanced nutrient management system that combines soil and sap analysis with farm-specific data to create fully tailored liquid and foliar fertilisers, providing measurable productivity and sustainability benefits.
On receiving the award, Managing Director and Owner of AgriVital said: “It's a huge honour - LAMMA is recognised throughout the industry so to be recognised here in front of all of our peers is a huge achievement.”
EXHIBITOR OPTIMISM
Despite a challenging 12 months for the agricultural sector, LAMMA 2026 demonstrated the industry’s continued appetite for innovation, investment and face-to-face engagement. Exhibitors reported strong footfall, high-quality conversations and a clear willingness from farmers and contractors to explore new ideas and machinery solutions.
LKL Services said: “A great show bringing all of agriculture together and the quality of conversations we’ve had with dairy producers was excellent – see you at LAMMA 2027!”
KW, Feedlync and NMR commented: “It is our first time at LAMMA and we have had a fantastic few days! We’ve spoken to existing and new customers and we’ve really enjoyed the show.”
Neil Macer, CNH Marketing Manager - UK & ROI added: “LAMMA has been a successful show for CNH this year. With an almost entirely new line-up of machines on display, the stand was busy throughout the day and sparked strong interest in the latest
technology. It’s been a valuable opportunity to engage directly with our customers, hear their priorities and challenges, and showcase how our innovations can support efficiency in their businesses.”
A JOINED-UP APPROACH TO FARMING’S FUTURE
Bringing CropTec and Low Carbon Agriculture Show together with LAMMA proved a major draw, giving farmers and industry professionals a more connected view of the challenges and opportunities facing modern agriculture.
There was a focus on policy, innovation and future energy systems in the Low Carbon Agriculture Theatre, which hosted panel discussions on low carbon farm fuels alongside a Q&A with Lord Bamford, exploring JCB’s engineering journey and investment in hydrogen technology.
In the CropTec theatre, discussions focussed on efficient farming – from managing fixed costs to resilient rotations, rounded off with a keynote address from George Freeman MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for AgriTech.
Victoria Atkins MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Defra, also attended the event in support of the Farmers Guardian Save Britain’s Family Farms Campaign, highlighting the impact of coordinated industry action on policy outcomes: “The result we got with Inheritance Tax is a result of the work you’ve done alongside the NFU and Farmers Guardian… I will continue to fight for you and hold the Government to account.”
Director of Events Philippa Christer said: “What a show! We are delighted that LAMMA 2026 proved such a success and is obviously a firm fixture in so many people’s calendars. Thank you to all the exhibitors and team behind the scenes that put so much work into this event – it is a big show which takes more than a year to plan. We look forward to seeing everyone again at the NEC next year on 20 -21 January 2027.”
FOCUSED ON VITICULTURE
Vines are a common sight across the English countryside these days, but back in the 1980s few people were planting vines commercially and it would have taken a brave man to commit his future to providing the necessary equipment to grow them successfully. Step forward David Sayell, a brave man and, it has since become apparent, a visionary who could see that our changing climate would position England and Wales as increasingly important players in the world of quality wine.
David Sayell, who heads up Vitifruit Equipment with business partner Richard Witt, has immersed himself in viticulture since he first drove a tractor around what was then Penshurst Vineyard in the eighties.
The experience he gained then and since has given him more than a head start when it comes to supplying and supporting the most reliable, proven machinery for growers across the country.
“I’ve been specifically focused on
viticulture for 45 years, and there aren’t many people who can say that,” he commented. “I can remember growers trimming vines with a hedge cutter, using inappropriate gardening equipment for other vineyard tasks and doing many jobs by hand.”
After studying rural estate management at what was then Cirencester Agricultural College, David studied agriculture at Plumpton College before gaining three years’ hands-on experience as a tractor driver. He then worked with a number of
dealerships selling tractors, and in some cases persuading them to offer viticulture equipment to the small but growing number of vineyard owners who could see there was a future in English wine.
“I could see that there was a growing market for quality equipment amongst the rising number of vineyard owners in the south east and beyond, but few other people seemed as interested as I was in the opportunity,” he said. “So I decided to do the job myself.”
David Sayell
VITIFRUIT EQUIPMENT
<< It was 1995, some 30 years ago, that David set up Vitifruit Equipment and began to sell and hire out the kind of specialist machinery that would help the UK wine industry grow to its current size and develop the reputation for fine wine that it now enjoys.
“Because I was one of the first to get involved, I was able to sign contracts with some of the top manufacturers in Europe,” he said. “It was never about bringing in the cheapest kit but about finding the best, and that took a lot of research.”
Working from home, first in a shed and then in his back bedroom, David grew Vitifruit Equipment from those early days to a business that now supplies growers across the country, from Yorkshire to Cornwall. He estimates that he has sold machinery to between 350 and 400 customers.
In 2013, with the company growing steadily, he decided it was time to share the load and brought in Richard Witt, “a fantastic
administrator who has added additional skills and really helped the business to grow” in David’s words.
The team has since expanded further, with Han Rushanov and David Wood strengthening the team ‘in the field’. While David is mainly responsible for sales, Han sets up each new machine and makes sure the operator is confident about how to operate it as part of a comprehensive handover procedure.
“Han is also a great technical problem solver and does a lot of the demonstrations for Vitifruit Equipment,” David added.
David Wood is a vital part of the after-sales operation and has considerable hands-on engineering experience, particularly when it comes to sprayers. “And given that we have so far supplied 63 Lipco sprayers and 43 MMs across the country, that experience comes in handy,” David Sayell added.

The newest member of the team is Chloe Marshall, who will be supporting David with sales enquiries but is also set to underpin Vitifruit Equipment’s growth in the relatively new field of vineyard robotics.
The business has already had some experience in the field, having supported a major vineyard in north Kent with robotic intervine weeding, and is aiming to develop that area, initially supplying a robot alley mower from Aigro.
“The mower is a relatively straightforward piece of robotic
machinery which can cut costs considerably but is not too complex. It’s a good introduction to the technology,” said David. “We are also talking to a number of other French companies about what is available; there is a lot of interest out there amongst growers.”
Chloe trained as a chemical engineer but grew up working on the family beef farm and on a strawberry farm.
“I drove tractors and learned my farming from the ground up, which led me to find a better fit working in and around agriculture,” she said.

VITIFRUIT EQUIPMENT
“As part of the team at Vitifruit Equipment, I will be drawing on hands-on experience with agricultural robotics and automation, including strawberry-picking robots, technology-driven polytunnels and UV-C robotic systems for the prevention of powdery mildew.
“This background allows me to work closely with growers to match vineyards with equipment that helps address labour shortages, improve efficiency and support sustainable production.”
David also has plenty of hands-on experience, not just from his own tractor driving days back in the eighties but from managing Godstone Vineyard, which he does as a contractor. “I really love getting out amongst the vines and it gives me first-hand knowledge of the industry I supply,” he explained.
While far from retirement, David is also aware of the need for continuity in the business, which was another reason for taking on the newer, younger members of the team. “I take as much care selecting colleagues as I do with choosing the machinery we sell, and I am delighted with the team we now have at Vitifruit Equipment,” he commented.
The list of quality machinery available to rent or buy from Vitifruit Equipment makes for impressive reading and includes a full range of canopy management, cultivation, frost protection and maintenance products.
Provitis manufactures trimmers, a choice of deleafers, a cane lifting and tying-in machine, a range of bud rubbers and stem cleaners, strimmer, pre-pruner and the VSE 430 attachment designed to pull out canes in the winter – in short, everything needed to keep vines
thriving year after year.
Vitifruit Equipment also supplies the Rabaud post inserter, while its impressive choice of sprayers includes single and double row tunnel recirculation sprayers from Lipco and MM’s mounted and trailed fan sprayers with capacities that range from 120 to 1,500 litres.
Boisselet equipment provides unbeatable intervine weed control by cultivation and strimming, while the company also manufactures an efficient prunings sweeper.
Vitifruit Equipment offers the Ventigel frost protection system which uses fan-blown hot air, and Zanon’s cordless and corded secateurs and tying tools, as well as Ligatex’s manual tying down tool.
The company’s comprehensive range of vineyard-specific equipment includes a compost spreader from Rink, a simple budget intervine weed strimmer and a full range of Aedes equipment, including rotary and flail mowers and strimmers.
“We sell or hire out everything a vineyard owner could need with the exception of a tractor,” said David. “We have focused over the years on selecting the best quality machinery that we know will deliver great results on vineyards large and small and offers good value for money.”
One new product David is keen to highlight is a range of Ecoclean chemicals that take sprayers and other machinery from dirty grey back to their original showroom colour.
“I have spent five years looking for a product that will really clean vineyard equipment, particularly sprayers,” said David, “and Ecoclean is the first one that does just what it says on the tin. Apart from being
Provitis trimmer

unsightly, dirty machinery is harder to maintain. I am delighted to have found this product after a great deal of research.”
Given the length of time Vitifruit Equipment has been serving the industry, it’s no surprise that the company has helped a number of vineyards grow from small enterprises into major players over the years.
“Several of the best-known vineyards are using, or have used, machinery we supplied, often in their early days,” he said. “We’ve supported growers for around 30 years now and we plan to keep doing so for many years to come.”

£4,295. Starts instantly and runs very well. Most things seem to work. A high quality and well made tractor. Had new clutch about 18 months ago. Seat is in very good condition, no rips or tears. Some general wear and tear, the biggest issue is that the cab, in particular the floor just by the step is very rusty and rotten. Would be ideal for occasional use for example for mowing a field.
