Are you Team Boo-Hoo or Team Yahoo when it comes to back-to-school season? I am 100% Team Boo-Hoo when the school supplies start filling the store aisles and those first-day countdowns begin. I love the slower pace of summer and the freedom of go-with-theflow days. But after that first day of school? I have to admit, I acclimate pretty quickly. As much as I cherish summer, I think we can all agree there are moments that can be—dare I say it—a little more challenging!
Now that we’ve officially made it through another summer break, Rebecca Hastings helps us celebrate with a humorous feature that felt like the perfect way to wrap up the season. Congratulations! You’ve Made It to August—Your Parenting Survival Award Is in the Mail is a lighthearted look back at some of the funniest and most relatable moments of summer parenting. I have a feeling you’ll see yourself somewhere in its pages.
One of my family’s favorite back-to-school traditions has always been signing up for after-school activities. With three children whose interests varied, I have always been grateful for the incredible variety of opportunities available in our community. Whether your child is interested in team sports, performing arts, scouting, fine arts, STEM, martial arts, or individual sports, our annual After School Activities Guide is a great place to begin your search.
Of course, choosing an activity isn’t just about filling time on the calendar. Sometimes the best after-school experience is one that builds confidence, encourages friendships, and gives a child a place where they truly belong. That’s why I encourage you to read Shannon Dean’s thoughtful feature, “More Than a Place to Go: How to Choose the After-School Program That Feels Right.” Her article offers practical advice for looking beyond convenience and finding programs that fit your child’s unique personality, interests, and needs.
As parents, we also know that teachers play an incredible role in helping our children succeed. Long before students arrive, teachers have already spent countless hours preparing classrooms and creating welcoming spaces where learning can flourish. Rebecca Hastings shares wonderful ideas in “Start Strong: Fun Ways to Celebrate Teachers at the Beginning of the Year.” It’s filled with simple, meaningful ways families can show appreciation and begin building positive relationships with the educators who will have such an important impact on our children’s lives.
As you flip through these pages, I hope you’ll discover new resources, connect with businesses that support local families, and perhaps even find an activity your child has never considered before. Sometimes the experiences that make the biggest impact begin with simply trying something new.
Here’s to a school year filled with growth, friendships, laughter, learning, and plenty of memorable moments along the way. Wishing you smooth mornings, successful homework sessions, and just enough coffee to make it through those early alarm clocks!

My son is a full-grown, responsible, kind, and capable adult. However, he recently reminded me that effective communication is a skill that requires continuous cultivation. We were on a family road trip when he suddenly threw the car in park and sprinted into the woods. He did not think to say, “Hey, guys, I’m feeling carsick.” Instead, he was a blur of panic disappearing into the trees while the rest of us screamed his name like we were filming a dramatic rescue scene.
Later, when I stopped laughing and my heart rate returned to normal, I thought, “This is exactly why we must prioritize teaching children to communicate effectively. To limit confusion and frustration.”
Children are not born knowing how to pause, check in, or ask questions. Infants learn this through simple connection cues like checking your face before exploring. Toddlers begin practicing early communica
them pause and check in before acting, especially during play or transitions. Schoolage children refine these skills into self-regulation habits that include asking questions, seeking clarification, and communicating needs before acting.
At every stage, the goal is the same: children learn to pause, communicate, and connect before they act. This does not develop naturally; it is a skill that must be taught to them through consistent practice. Teaching children to communicate before acting does not have to be rigid or serious. In fact, the more playful it is, the better it sticks. Here are some simple ways to teach permission seeking.
• Ask Before You Build blocks or Legos, have the child ask permis sion before adding a piece to a shared structure. This is perfect for preschoolers learning cooperative play.

• Ask to Join- During playtime, model asking, “Can I play with you?” before joining a game, sharing an idea, or taking a toy.

• Family Permission Phrase- Give older kids a predictable, non-cringey way to pause and check in before acting. This will teach them the adult skill of communicating first, instead of assuming permission. Hav ing a little phrase also helps spouses who are struggling to communicate well.
When your children do ask, celebrate as if they just won the Nobel Prize for Com munication, because what we give attention to grows. These tiny habits become the lifelong tools that prevent confusion over simple things like sprinting into the woods on a family road trip.
What I really want parents to understand is that expecting your children to ask permission is not about control. It is about helping your child build the skills required for healthy relationships. When children first learn to say “Can I...?”, they have the vital building blocks for strong friendships, healthy family dynamics, appropriate school behav ior, and future workplace success. Helping your children master permission seeking is a tiny act with enormous relational dividends! Your goal is to help them become thoughtful, connected humans who do not accidentally terrify their family on a road trip.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida is proud to recognize Matt and Tessa Rippon as the 2026 Big Duo of the Year. This honor celebrates mentors who exemplify exceptional dedica tion, compassion, and commitment to creating meaningful and lasting relationships with youth in our community.
For the past two and a half years, Matt and Tessa have been matched with their Little Brothers, Ja-Zavier, 8, and Ja’Zyin, 9.
Throughout that time, they have remained a steady source of encouragement, support, and care through every stage of life and every transition their Littles have faced.
Month after month, the growth within this match has been evident. The compassion, patience, and genuine love Matt and Tessa have for Ja-Zavier and Ja’Zyin shines through in every in teraction. Their relationship has continued to strengthen over time, growing into a bond built on trust, consistency, and shared experiences. Like many young boys, Ja-Zavier and Ja’Zyin are energetic, adventurous, and always ready for fun. Matt have embraced every moment, creating opportunities for them to learn, grow, and simply enjoy being kids. Together, they have shared count less memories, from afternoons at the park and playing football to exciting outings at Sky Zone trampoline park.
They have also introduced their Littles to new experiences within the community, including visits to local restaurants like Coffee Cup and Cracker Barrel. While these outings may seem simple, Matt and Tessa understand that mentorship is often built through the small moments, showing up consistently, spending quality time together, and making their Littles feel valued and important. Most recently, Matt and Tessa welcomed a new baby into their family. Even while adjusting to this exciting new chapter in their lives, they con tinued to show up wholeheartedly for Ja-Zavier and Ja’Zyin. Their continued dedication speaks volumes about the kind of mentor the priority they place on their relationship with their Littles.

What an incredible day at the Orange Frog Workshop. Recently, educators from across our district came together to discover the power of positive leadership, intentional relationships, and the science behind creating happier, more successful schools. From meaningful conversations to plenty of laughter, we were reminded that happiness isn’t just a feeling, it’s a strategy that can transform classrooms, strengthen teams, and positively impact every student we serve.
Thank you to everyone who invested in this professional learning experience and embraced the opportunity to grow together. The energy in the room was contagious, and we can’t wait to see the Orange Frog mindset ripple through our schools this year. Here’s to choosing optimism, building connections, and making every day a little brighter.
The Wildcats set a new program record with 11 wins. They won their first state playoff game in program history and Escambia County history in the Region 1-2A quarterfinal.

When classes began in early August, Pensacola Catholic High School welcomed 195 freshman students and approximately 20 transfer students. Over the summer, Mrs. Peyton Finelli, Freshman and Sophomore Guidance Counselor, with the assistance of members of the CHS Student Ambassadors, hosted six sessions of the New Crusaders Workshop. The purpose of this optional program is to help students feel more comfortable with CHS before the start of the school year. Each four-hour session gave incoming freshmen the opportunity to meet fellow students, become familiar with the campus, and gain an early understanding of what to expect when classes began. During each session, students toured the campus, learned how the class schedule works, played fun trivia games that introduced them to Catholic High’s history, and received helpful tips on note-taking and study skills. They also participated in an interactive discussion about the differences between middle school and high school. Mrs. Finelli launched the New Crusaders Workshop in 2023, and it has grown in popularity each year. Participants left excited and better prepared to begin their freshman year as Crusaders.

Creative Learning Academy’s Sarah Smith spent part of her summer in Washington, D.C. as one of only 60 educators nationwide selected for the prestigious Supreme Court Summer Institute. Now in its 31st year, the Institute is open to teachers in law-related and civic education and is co-sponsored by Street Law, Inc. and the Supreme Court Historical Society. Sarah’s selection followed a highly competitive application process, highlighting both her commitment to civic education and Creative Learning Academy’s dedication to preparing students to be informed, engaged citizens. During the Institute, Mrs. Smith studied recent U.S. Supreme Court cases in depth and learned innovative, interactive methods for bringing those cases - and the constitutional issues involved - into her classroom. Sessions were led by Supreme Court advocates, reporters, scholars, and educators, providing Sarah with a rare opportunity to learn directly from experts who observe and shape Supreme Court practice. Teachers who attend this Institute leave there with confidence to discuss controversial issues and Supreme Court decisions with students, and begin introducing Supreme Court cases in their classrooms.
Mrs. Smith is eager to share this experience with her students and to the CLA community at large. She plans to incorporate new case studies, simulations, and discussion techniques into her lessons, helping learners better understand how the Supreme Court works and why its decisions matter in everyday life. In addition, she will be available to present workshops on teaching about the U.S. Supreme Court and to share how her training can support civic education across the local educational landscape.

The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) released district and school grades today, and Escambia County Public Schools has achieved a district grade of ‘A.’ Eighty-three (83) percent of ECPS schools upheld or exceeded past years’ performances. Overall, 19 ECPS schools earned a letter grade of A, 16 schools earned a letter grade of B, and 17 schools earned a letter grade of C. No ECPS schools earned a grade of D or F. This marks a third year of increases in the number of A and B schools in the district.

At the middle school level, ECPS earned five As, three Bs, and one C. All nine middle schools increased or maintained their school grades.
“We are proud of our schools and their dedicated efforts,” said ECPS Superintendent Keith Leonard. “These excellent school grades reflect the commitment of our students, teachers, administrators, and support staff. In addition to the progress we have made, we remain focused on continuous improvement. Thank you to our students, staff, parents, community members, and our actively engaged school board. Achieving our goals requires the collective effort and collaboration of all stakeholders.”
Blue Angels Elementary, Lipscomb Elementary, Montclair Elementary, Beulah Middle, Ernest Ward Middle and Tate High each raised their grade from Bs last year to As this year. Scenic Heights Elementary increased from a C to an A. Montclair Elementary has increased its grade from an F to an A in three years. Lincoln Park Elementary, Longleaf Elementary, Ferry Pass Middle, and Workman Middle all raised their grades from Cs to Bs, while Navy Point Elementary had the greatest increase in points, with their school grade increasing from a D to a B. Mathematics scores increased at rates surpassing the recently announced state increases, with the Middle school Algebra pass rate now leading the state average increases by 6% and 9th grade algebra pass rate matching the state average for the first time.
Escambia County Public Schools’ middle school acceleration rate was again among the highest in the state, increasing from 87% to 89%. The middle school acceleration rate measures proficiency on high school level courses taken by middle school students, such as Algebra and Biology, as well as high school level industry certifications earned by middle school students. For the first time, the middle school Algebra EOC pass rate exceeds the state average.

Among the honors presented during Pensacola Catholic High School’s Commencement Exercises, none more fully captures the school’s mission and spirit than the Pro Deo et Patria Award. Named after the school’s motto, which translates from Latin as “For God and Country,” the award has been presented for the past 43 years to a graduate who most consistently exemplifies the ideals of Catholic High. Selection of the recipient is especially meaningful because it comes from those who know the students best. Each year, members of the senior class and the faculty cast individual votes to identify the classmate who most fully embodies the values that define the Catholic High experience. The Pro Deo et Patria Award recognizes a student whose actions and character reflect the school’s Core Values of Selfless Love, Commitment to Excellence, Personal Integrity, and Commitment to Service. More than an academic or extracurricular honor, it celebrates a young person who has lived these principles daily and demonstrated what it truly means to do all things “For God and Country.” Congratulations to the 2026 recipient of the Pro Deo et Patria Award, Michael Baroco, who was presented the award by Principal Sister Kierstin Martin. On a historical note, Michael Baroco is the fifth member of the Baroco family to receive the Pro Deo et Patria Award, joining Cathy Baroco Landry ‘87, Tom Baroco ‘93, Maria Baroco ‘19, and Joey Baroco ‘21.

Cox Communications and the Escambia County Council of PTAs/ PTSAs (ECCPTA) came together to recognize 52 remarkable students during the annual Cox Inspirational Student Hero Awards and ECCPTA Students of the Year Awards. The students were honored for demonstrating strength, resilience, and perseverance while overcoming significant personal hardships. From navigating medical challenges and family loss to persevering through difficult personal circumstances, each student has remained committed to personal growth while inspiring classmates, educators, and school communities. Students were selected by a committee of school leaders across Escambia County for their ability to persevere through adversity while showing measurable improvement and positively influencing those around them.
During the ceremony, each honoree was presented with a personalized engraved medallion and certificates of honor from United States Senators. The Escambia County Board of County Commissioners presented a proclamation congratulating all the honorees.

Escambia County 4-H brought home a double victory from the 2026 Florida State 4-H Meat Judging Contest, securing first place finishes in both the intermediate and senior divisions. The state competition, held at the University of Florida in Gainesville, challenged participants across several rigorous categories. Competitors were required to identify forty retail meat cuts, evaluate and place retail, primal, and carcass classes, deliver oral reasons, and complete a comprehensive written test. In addition to the team victories, Escambia County members dominated the individual standings. Charli McClendon earned the title of Senior High Individual, while Rhett Harcourt was named the Intermediate High Individual, making them the topranked meat judging 4-H members in the state of Florida. Other notable individual performances in the senior division included Tucker Padgett in second place, A.T. Bridgers in fourth place, and Andrew Wiggins in fifth place. In the intermediate division, Mallory Mahoney secured second place and Ella Gilmore took third place, while Rahlina Dodson finished in sixth place. The senior team—comprising Bridgers, McClendon, Padgett, and Wiggins—previously competed at the Western National Roundup in Denver in January 2026. Following their state success, they have now qualified to represent Florida at the National 4-H Meat Judging Contest this coming October. This national event will take place at Kansas State University, with the formal awards ceremony hosted at the American Royal in Kansas City, Missouri.
Sponsored locally by the UF/IFAS Extension, the 4-H meat judging program is designed to develop critical life skills through activities related to the processing of beef, pork, and lamb. Participants learn to evaluate retail identification, factors affecting meat quality, and various cooking methods, gaining a deeper understanding of the scientific principles behind nutritional value and consumer appeal. According to organizers, the program also emphasizes foundational life skills, including effective decision-making, critical thinking, goal setting, and teamwork.

One of the most meaningful traditions of Pensacola Catholic High School’s Commencement Exercises is the presentation of the Chris Gallman Sportsmanship Award, given annually in memory of Chris Gallman, a member of the Class of 1999. Chris was an outstanding student-athlete who excelled in both basketball and track. In May 1998, only days after winning the District Championship in the high jump at the conclusion of his junior year and shortly before he was to compete at the State Track Meet, Chris passed away unexpectedly from an undiagnosed heart condition. His sudden death deeply affected the entire Catholic High community. While Chris was admired for his athletic abilities, he is remembered even more for the person he was. He had an infectious smile, a kind word for everyone, and a genuine concern for others. He embodied sportsmanship, humility, compassion, and selflessness in everything he did. In the months following his passing, students, faculty, coaches, administrators, and parents united to establish an award that would honor Chris’s legacy and ensure that the qualities he exemplified would continue to be celebrated at Catholic High. Each year, the Chris Gallman Sportsmanship Award recognizes a senior who best reflects those same attributes of kindness, character, and exemplary sportsmanship. The recipient is selected through input from members of all 21 CHS varsity athletic teams, the coaching staff, and the faculty. This year’s selection process resulted in two recipients, as it was simply too difficult to choose just one athlete. Through their participation in varsity athletics, these student-athletes clearly demonstrated the same qualities that Chris embodied—a commitment to team unity and integrity over personal accomplishment, along with the selfless spirit of sportsmanship by which he lived.
Congratulations to Ella Adams and Colton Guillot for being selected to receive this year’s Chris Gallman Sportsmanship Award, presented by Athletic Director Matt Adams.
On Wednesday, June 17, The Health Ambassadors from C.A. Weis Elementary got to tour the UWF college campus and eat in the cafeteria. The students learned a lot and had so much fun. The ambassadors said it was their first of many college visits.

There is something happening in the lives of our children that most of us are only seeing the edges of.
We see the phone. We see the attitude. We see the grades slipping and the friendships shifting and the child who used to talk to us now staring at a screen in silence. We set limits. We take the phone away. We have the conversation for the third time this month. And still, something feels off. Just out of reach. Just beyond what we can see.
I had the wonderful opportunity to present Behind the Screens at a recent educators conference. There is so much happening that parents and educators are simply not aware of unless you happen to be really diving into this stuff. A lot. And who has time for that? But I do believe understanding what is happening behind the screens helps us to better understand our youth. I have spent over a decade working with students, families, and schools across the country on digital safety, social media, and the rapidly changing world our children are growing up in. And the single most important thing I can tell you is this: what you are seeing on the surface is not the whole story. Not even close.
The algorithms powering the platforms your child uses every day are not neutral. They are engineered by behavioral scientists specifically to capture attention and hold it… learning what emotionally triggers your child, what keeps them scrolling, and what brings them back. Make no mistake, it IS a business model. And it is working on our kids in ways most of us were never told to look for.
Millions of teenagers today are turning to AI companion apps. Platforms where they can interact with artificial characters that are always patient, always available, and never say the wrong thing. Not for entertainment. But for emotional support. For companionship. In many documented cases, for simulated relationships.

Today’s children are growing up in a digital ecosystem unlike anything any previous generation has ever experienced. Social media and artificial intelligence are no longer separate conversations. They are deeply connected parts of the same system, and together they are quietly reshaping how our children think, feel, connect, and see themselves.
There is a very real developmental problem with that. Real relationships are built through friction. A friend who lets you down but shows up anyway, a conflict that gets resolved, a moment that requires something hard from both people. Those experiences are not comfortable. But they are how children develop the emotional and relational skills they will need for the rest of their lives. An AI companion never ruptures. It never disappoints. And a developing brain that calibrates to that standard can start to find real human relationships…including the ones with parents and educators… start to feel like too much work by comparison.
Then deepfakes get inserted into all of this mess. Deepfakes are AI-generated images and videos that place a real person’s face onto fabricated content. These are already showing up in schools across the country. A national survey of K-12 prin-

cipals found that one in five high schools has already dealt with a deepfake-related incident. The average age of victims in school-based cases is twelve to fourteen years old. Babies. These are young kids that should never have to sit in this space. It is adult. And terrifying. And exhausting. And a fire to their system.
All of this can feel like a losing game. But it isn’t. One thing I have learned after over a decade of doing this work is that informed parents can protect their kids. And the most powerful thing any of us can do is close the gap between what we think our children are experiencing online and what they are actually navigating every day. Talk to your child. Do not start with a lecture, but with genuine curiosity. Ask them what they are seeing. Make your home a place where hard things can be said out loud without fear of punishment or blame.
Understand you are not in this alone. Schools, counselors, coaches, and community leaders all have a role to play. This is not a problem any one of us can solve in isolation. I believe that it requires all of us to be informed, connected, and moving in the same direction. The world our children are growing up in is more complex than anything we faced. But awareness… well, this is where everything starts to change.

When was the last time you thanked a teacher? So often we go about life, grateful for their hard work but never really stop to thank them for the difference they make in our lives. From teaching kids to read and navigate numbers to how to work in a group and practice good manners, teachers dedicate their lives to helping you raise your children.
Teachers educate, comfort, listen, and even protect kids every day. While every day is a good opportunity to say thank you, start the year strong by showing how much you value the educators in your child’s life. If you work with other parents from the class or the school you can do something really special.
Here are some fun and meaningful ways to celebrate the teachers in your child’s life!
Teachers are masters of multitasking. With so much on their plate, you can show appreciation by lending a hand. Offer to do things like make copies or organize the classroom library. Come in one afternoon and redecorate their seasonal bulletin board or organize and refresh their supplies. Practical help goes a long way toward making a teacher feel appreciated.
Break periods and lunchtime often get filled with meetings, helping students, or other work. Teachers can easily have a nourish-
ing and tasty snack by creating a grab-and-go snack table. Ask parents to donate packaged snacks and drinks that teachers can take on the run. Great ideas are Kind bars, fancy seltzers, candy, and smoothies.
Teachers don’t need more generic mugs. Instead, send out a survey at the beginning of the year asking each teacher about their favorite things. Great ideas include favorite candy, colors, restaurants, coffee orders, and authors. Use this information to get teachers things you know they will love for upcoming holidays and celebrations (or just because!)
As the year starts teachers are focused on making things great for every child that walks through their door. Help them make this possible by contributing things they need for the classroom. You can also go the extra mile and give them things that make their year easier and more fun like new desk supplies, a fun calendar, a travel mug, or a stash of candy to keep in their drawer for the days they need it most.
Teachers spend all day caring for and teaching kids, and many of them are tired at the end of the day. Give them a break by making dinners they can take home when they leave. Parents and local restaurants can donate meals that teachers can grab at the end of the day. Great ideas include pasta and salad, soup and bread, meatballs and hard rolls, burritos, and tortilla chips. And don’t forget dessert!

Celebrate the beginning of the year for a whole week, and give each day a different theme with something fun for the teachers to do, receive, or eat. Some creative and fun ideas are:
#1 Popcorn Day: Set up a popcorn table in the teacher’s room so they can grab some popcorn and a soda for a fun snack.
#2
Book/Magazine Day: Bring around a cart with books and magazines for each teacher to choose from. See if a local bookstore will donate books and magazines or ask families to donate.

#3 Fancy Coffee Day: Perfect for morning or a midday pick-me-up, set up a table where teachers can get fun coffee creations that are sure to beat the coffee in the teacher’s lounge.
#4 New Supplies Day: Collect classroom supplies, teaching supplies, stationery, tissues, and other things teachers use in the classroom. Invite teachers to come to pick a few things to refresh their classroom.
#5
Relaxation Day: Turn the teacher’s lounge into a relaxing oasis with calm music, cucumber water, and spa kits with lotion
and face masks to take home. Get a massage therapist to give mini-massages for a special treat.
#6 Flower Day: Bring each teacher fresh-cut flowers or small potted plants. It’s fun to bring this during class so kids can see how nice it is to celebrate their teacher.
#7 Ice Cream Day: Set up a sundae-making station with all the fixings and make sure each teacher gets coverage to come to enjoy a sweet treat.

As summer winds down and school ramps back up, families face a familiar list of decisions. One of the most important? Where will your child go when the school day ends, but your workday hasn’t?
Whether you’re juggling long hours at the office, hoping to extend your child’s learning, or just trying to keep them engaged and happy until dinner, choosing the right after-school program can feel like one more high-stakes choice in a never-ending parenting marathon.
But here’s the good news: with a little practical research, some honest reflection, and a gut-check or two, you can find a program that supports not just your calendar, but your child’s temperament, energy, and growth.
Some parents wrestle with guilt about sending their child to an after-school program, especially if it feels like “extra” time away from home. But research suggests that high-quality after-school programs are far more than glorified babysitting.
One study published in Developmental Psychology found that elementary-aged children who participated in structured after-school activities had stronger work

habits and better emotional adjustment than peers who didn’t.
Another, published in The American Journal of Community Psychology, revealed that middle school students enrolled in after-school programs earned better math scores and also displayed stronger developmental skills, including leadership and social confidence.
Done well, afterschool programs can enhance a child’s development, not hinder it.
Does it align with my child’s temperament and preferences?
Are staff warm, consistent, and well-trained?
Is the environment safe and welcoming?
Is there good balance between structure and choice?
Can I afford it and manage the logistics long-term?
Did my child enjoy the visit?
Do I feel at peace leaving them there?
Before you’re dazzled by glossy flyers and promises of enrichment, start with a simple question: What does your child need after school?
Developmental psychologist Dr. Deborah Lowe Vandell puts it this way: “It’s a complicated question about what works

best. Afterschool environments need to be evaluated in the context of the individual child’s needs and within the family.”
So: What lights them up? What wears them down? Are they the kind of kid who craves structured activities, or do they need space to breathe after a long, socially demanding day?
If your child is introverted or easily overstimulated, a five-day sports camp

might leave them drained. On the other hand, if they thrive on movement and social energy, sitting in a tutoring center could feel like detention.
Listen to your child’s feedback, even if they don’t say much. If they come home from a trial day cranky, quiet, or withdrawn, something’s not clicking. Trust what you’re seeing.
The best after-school programs don’t just pass the time. They use it meaningfully.
Connection: Are staff warm, present, and genuinely interested in the kids? Do they get down on eye level and know kids by name? A program that’s merely supervised may not be enough.
Capability: Are staff trained in education, child development, and conflict resolution? Can they guide behavior with empathy rather than just enforce rules?
Continuity: Children thrive on predictability. Ask about staff turnover, what happens when someone’s out sick, and whether there’s a reliable daily rhythm. If your child sees a new adult every week,
they may not form the connections they need to feel secure.
Yes, a program has to fit your schedule. And it should ideally be affordable and not halfway across town. But don’t let convenience be the only deciding factor.
Admittedly, transportation can be a deal-breaker. Some programs offer it. Some don’t. Ask detailed questions: What time is pickup? What happens if you’re late? My neighbor had to step back from a seemingly perfect program after learning parents were expected to pick up by 5:00 sharp, while her workday sometimes ended at 5:30.
If a program seems like a contender, ask to observe. Even better, bring your child and let them explore. Kids are intuitive, and their body language is often a tell.
Watch how staff interact with the children. Are kids engaged or zoned out on screens? Is there laughter, creativity, and movement? Or is the vibe more chaotic and crowded?
Are there activity options, or is everyone lumped into one rotation? What’s the
noise level? Does it feel joyful and ener getic? Or loud and overstimulating?
Even highly rated programs may not suit your child. But some red flags are universal, such as high staff turnover, low adult-to-child ratios, no consistent structure, excessive screen use, or a rigid culture focused on compliance instead of curiosity.
And if a program won’t let you ob serve or dodges questions about staffing and policies? That’s a red flag in itself.
No program is perfect. But when the fit is right, you’ll see it: the glitter, the grass stains, the proud art project clutched in small hands. The “guess what happened today!” stories that tumble out during the ride home.
And you’ll know your child is not just being cared for, but known, engaged, and supported.

Q. My husband loves his job, works a regular schedule and he makes over $180,000 a year. I love my work as a parttime substitute teacher in our local school system. We are debt-free, except for our home, and we’ve already invested and saved enough money to where we’ll have a very comfortable retirement in a few years. My husband asked me the other day how I’d feel about finding a full-time job, so we can build more wealth. I don’t really want to do this, but I wondered about your thoughts on our situation.
A. You two have a responsibility to take care of each other and your own household, first and foremost. You didn’t give me many numbers to go on, but from what you’ve told me it sounds like you’re doing a really good job of that. Congratulations!
But to be honest, I’m not a big fan of the idea of you taking on a full-time job only to build more wealth—especially if you guys are in great shape financially, and you love what you’re already doing. Sure, having a bunch of wealth allows you to do things you wouldn’t otherwise be able to do. It can also help ensure a good, stable quality of life and put you in a position to be extremely generous. But if you have to surrender the joy in life to do it, all in the name of simply increasing your amount of wealth to an even higher level, I don’t like that idea.

I want you to think about something. Contentment has nothing to do with how many hours you work, or how
many zeroes are in your bank account. Contentment has to do with your state of being. It’s connected to your happiness, your sense of gratitude and your priorities. The idea that contentment is on the same spectrum as ambition? I disagree with that notion wholeheartedly. People should do some thing with their lives that they feel called to do and enjoy. Now, if your kids are going hungry, and your bills aren’t getting paid, you need to put your head down and do what it takes to get on the right path. But in my mind, you guys are in a great place!

Child meal sites across the Gulf Coast are offering healthy, FREE meals for children, ages 18 and younger.

ugust has arrived, and if you’re reading this, congratula tions—you’ve survived another summer! Your prize? I’m so glad you asked! Prizes shouldn’t just be for kids, right? So let’s see what’s on the horizon. Could it be an all-expensepaid trip to a tropical resort? Not exactly.
You, fellow parent, have the sweet promise of school supply sales, a return to routine, and the quiet joy of sipping coffee without hearing “I’m bored” every 15 minutes. But before we rush to sharpen those pencils and pack those lunchboxes, let’s take a moment to honor all you’ve endured these past few months.
The Sunscreen Struggle – It starts with figuring out what sunscreen to even purchase. Spray? Mineral? SPF? Who even knows?! And applying sunscreen? Well, we all know that applying sunscreen to a child is like wrestling a greased-up octopus that also happens to scream. And yet, despite your best efforts, there’s always one streak of sunburn.
The Pool Towel Debacle – Where is that smell coming from? You’ve washed, dried, and folded approximately 4,279 towels, only for them to end up in a damp, smelly heap within an hour. The faint odor of mildew will linger long after summer ends.
The Snack Wars – We all need snacks. But something about summer brings out the snack monster in everyone (even us!) You bought enough snacks to feed a small village, yet somehow, there’s “nothing good to eat.” Plus, you’ve resorted to eating the bag of crushed animal crackers at the bottom of the swim bag.
The Car Smells Situation –to accept that your car would smell like wet swimsuits, smashed Goldfish crackers, and possibly something that was once dairybased but has evolved into a new species. Should you clean the car out or just get a new one? It’s a toss-up.
The Bedtime Negotiations –was a thing? Neither do your kids. It now takes multiple remind ers, bribes, and threats of “no screen time tomorrow” to get them to sleep before midnight.
Week One: “This summer is going to be magical!”
Week Two: “It’s going ok. This isn’t so bad.”
Week Three: “Okay, this is a lot of togetherness.”
Week Four: “I love my kids. I love my kids. I love my kids.”
Week Five: “We are out of money, patience, and the will to entertain these people.”
Week Six: “I’m just going to check and see when the first day is so we’re ready.”
Week Seven: “Dinner? Ummm...who wants ice cream?”
Week Eight: “School starts soon. I think I’ll miss them. Maybe.”
Week Nine: “Wait, did we do enough fun things? Should we take a last-minute trip?!”

Professional Event Planner: You now understand why camp counselors exist.
Human Air Conditioner: “No, I don’t know why it’s so hot. Yes, I wish we had a pool, too.”
Amateur Detective: Who left the wet towel on the couch? Who ate the last ice pop and left the empty box in the freezer? Where is your bathing suit? Who has the goggles, the good ones? Who dumped sand in the back of the car?
Olympic-Level Referee: You can now break up sibling fights before they escalate to WWE-level brawls.
Expert at Answering Impossible Questions: “What if sharks had wings? Would they still live in the ocean?” (What?)
Sure, August is still summer, but it’s late summer. The light at the end of the tunnel is glowing (or maybe that’s just the reflection from your kid’s iPad that you swore they wouldn’t use so much). Either way, you’ve made it. And that deserves a trophy. Or at the very least, a giant iced coffee and five uninterrupted minutes to scroll your phone in peace.
Rebecca Hastings is a freelance writer and frequent contributor.

Week Ten: “Nope. We are officially out of energy. Someone hand me the back-to-school supply list and a giant coffee.”

Moana

Theaters
Moana’s beloved Pacific island is dying and the only way she can save it is to sail the pathless seas and return the stolen heart of the goddess Te Fiti. To do so, the chief’s determined daughter must acquire long-forgotten wayfinding skills and convince the mischievous demigod Maui to help with her quest. This adaptation reproduces the original animated film beat for beat, although parents should note that the violent scenes feel scarier in a live action version. The Minions are stars in the world of silent films until “talkies” take over and the little critters are out of work thanks to their unintelligible speech. James, a diligent Minion, writes his own monster movie, but there’s a big problem: he doesn’t have a monster. So the Minions set out to find one…This film is every bit as zany as past films in the franchise and delivers the expected slapstick action, silly jokes, and some funny moments designed for adults. This isn’t an amazing family franchise, but it’s definitely above average Photo ©Universal Pictures
Enola Holmes and Lord Tewkesbury are getting married – until she learns that her brother Sherlock has been kidnapped. Now the wedding’s off and Enola, along with Tewkesbury and the loyal Dr. Watson are faced with murder, arson, another family kidnapping, and old sins of the British Empire. Slightly less violent than the prior Enola films, this one still delivers swift-moving action, a spunky heroine and strong messages about courage, loyalty, emotional intelligence, self-respect, honesty, and compassion. Before he was America’s first president, George Washington was a surveyor mapping the Ohio Territory. Almost immediately thereafter, he was a British officer, fighting to control the land as part of the French and Indian War. Released in time for the USA’s 250th anniversary, this film takes the path less traveled and examines Washington’s early adulthood. The movie shows, not a hero, but an ambitious, fiercely determined young man who learns from his own arrogance, rigidity, and costly failures. The dialogue is overloaded with portentous phrases, but the story is interesting enough to compensate for weaknesses in the script Photo ©Angel Studios

The violent Brigands are terrorizing multiple planets, kidnapping women as breeding stock for their all-male society. But when they poison Krypto the dog, Kara (a.k.a. Supergirl) finds herself teaming up with a bereaved teenager in search of vengeance. This is a dark, gritty tale, featuring a grieving heroine with an alcohol abuse disorder and a whole lot of unprocessed trauma. Although the film moves quickly, the action scenes are much less interesting than Kara’s tragic backstory.

GPP: You and Jake have been together since middle school. What has it been like growing up together, and how has that shaped the way you parent your boys?
SB: It’s really special to have someone who has known you through all of those seasons of life and still chooses you through each new one. We’ve definitely grown and changed a lot, but we’ve done it together.
I think it shapes how we parent because we really want our boys to feel that same sense of security. We want them to know that our family is their safe place, that we’re always on their team, and that we’re figuring life out right alongside them.
GPP: What has it meant to move back home to Pensacola and raise your family?
SB: It’s funny because I always told Jake we’re going to move back home one day. He wanted to live in a big city, and I always knew Pensacola was home. There’s something really special about raising your kids where you grew up. Our boys get to be surrounded by family, and they’re making memories in places that already hold so many memories for us.
GPP: What have you learned about balancing creativity, work, and family life in this season?
SB: I truly love being a mom, and being home with my boys is something I’m incredibly grateful for. At the same time, finding the balance between motherhood, work, and creativity is not always easy. There are days when I feel pulled in several directions, and I’ve had to learn that balance can look different from one day or season to the next.
Being able to work and create has helped me rediscover parts of myself within motherhood. It gives me an outlet to build something meaningful, and feel connected to who I am outside of the day-to-day responsibilities of being a mom.
One of the coolest parts has been watching my boys become involved in that world too. They love seeing what I’m
working on, helping with ideas, being part of videos, and creating things of their own.
GPP: The Pensacola Moms Social Club has grown quickly in just over a year. What inspired you to create it?
SB: The idea came when I was living in Tallahassee. My oldest was 2.5 and I was pregnant with my 2nd. I didn’t have any family and all my friends were back home. I found a local Facebook group of moms with babies and thought it was great. When I found out we were moving back to Pensacola, I thought I should start something similar.
I started the group with my friend. We wanted to create something that made motherhood feel more fun and less isolating. We wanted moms to have a place where they could come as they are, meet women in the same season, and actually build friendships. The whole heart behind it has always been growing in motherhood together.
GPP: How do you use your social skills to support both the local community and the moms you serve?
SB: Social media has given me the ability to connect people, and that’s probably my favorite part of it.
I love helping local moms discover businesses, experiences, products, and resources that they may not have found otherwise. I also love being able to introduce local businesses to a community of families who genuinely want to support them.
Through the Pensacola Moms Social Club, we’ve been able to work with so many amazing local businesses. I always want partnerships to feel natural and mutually beneficial. I want it to add value for the moms we serve while also helping a local business grow and reach new people. We’re so so appreciative of the businesses we’ve worked with this far and have supported us.
GPP: When your boys are grown, what do you hope they remember most about their childhood and the kind of mom you are?
SB: I hope they remember that their childhood felt magical, safe, and full of love. I hope they remember the family adventures, themed parties, days at the beach, dancing in the kitchen, and all of the little traditions we’ve created together.
More than anything, I hope they remember how much I loved being their mom. I hope they remember that I showed up, listened to them, celebrated who they were, and made our home a place where they always felt loved and wanted. I want our home to be a place they always want to come back to. Being their mom is the greatest privilege of my life.
Caffeine boost? Sweet Tea
Splash pad or pool day? Pool Day
Early bird or night owl? Night owl
Target run or online shopping? Local Businesses :) Disney vacation or beach vacation? That’s hard. Can I do both?
Pensacola native Shelby Barnes and her husband, Jake, have been together since middle school. They married in September 2015.
