Holland recently made the cheer team at Fairhope Middle School after cheering the previous three years at Rogue Allstars. She loves tumbling, fashion, going to the beach, and attending 3C youth group with her friends.
As our children get older, there are certainly moments that can tug at our heartstrings. We miss some of the little things—the bedtime stories, the playground adventures, and the days when they needed us for just about everything. But along with those bittersweet moments comes something unexpected: a little more time. As children become more independent, parents often find themselves with opportunities to rediscover old interests, explore new passions, and reconnect with parts of themselves that may have been put on hold during the busy years of raising a family.
This is the season of life where I find myself now. Like many parents, I have started asking myself what activities bring me joy, challenge me creatively, and help me connect with others. I’ve been experimenting with different hobbies and interests, trying to discover what truly fills my cup socially, creatively, and personally. The challenge, however, is knowing where to begin. There are so many opportunities available in our community that it can be difficult to know what’s out there.
As I was talking with a friend about my quest to find a new hobby, she quickly admitted that she was feeling the same way. She was ready to add a little more fun, friendship, and adventure to her life as well. That conversation sparked the idea for this month’s brand-new guide, Learn • Play • Connect. Our team set out to create a resource that would help adults discover local lessons, classes, clubs, sports, and activities designed just for them.
While our guides typically focus on opportunities for children and families, we thought it was time to shine a spotlight on parents, too. After all, moms and dads deserve fun too. Whether you’ve always wanted to learn Mahjong, sharpen your Bridge skills, pick up a paintbrush, take a dance class, join a book club, or finally give Pickleball a try, you’ll find a wide variety of options in our new Learn • Play • Connect Activity Guide for Adults. We hope it inspires you to try something new, reconnect with an old passion, or simply spend time doing something that brings you joy.
In last month’s issue, we featured an article about family hobbies and the many benefits they offer. One of the things I love most about this new guide is that many of the activities can become family experiences as well. They also support some of the healthy habits discussed in Rebecca Hastings’ feature, The Big 3 for Healthy Kids, reminding us that active, engaged families often build stronger relationships and healthier lifestyles.
Speaking of taking care of ourselves, Shannon Dean offers another valuable reminder in her feature this month, The End of Summer Crunch: Why Starting Backto-School Prep in July Saves Your Sanity. I know, it feels far too early to begin thinking about back-to-school while we’re still enjoying summer break. But Shannon shares practical tips that can help families reduce stress and avoid the last-minute rush that often accompanies the start of a new school year.

Free Special Needs Resource Fair & Speed Social
The founders and members of Where the Pieces Meet are excited to announce the 3rd Annual Special Needs Resource Fair. “Our goal with this resource fair is to bring together everyone in our area that needs support in the exceptional needs community regardless of age,” says Emily Tisdale, co-founder of Where the Pieces Meet, an organization that offers a welcoming space for young adults on the spectrum, helping them build friendships and participate in activities.
This year’s event will take place on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at PZK Hall in Robertsdale, AL, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. New this year - The Pieces Collective, a curated section of the fair that will showcase local artisans that are neurodivergent/exceptional needs! Following the fair, at approximately 2:30 p.m., a Speed Social will be held. This activity is like speed dating for friendship amongst autistic/ neurodivergent young adults. During the Speed Social, participants will engage in brief 3-minute chats before rotating to the next person, offering a fun and supportive way to make new connections. Friends of the Fairhope Library Call for Volunteers
The Friends of the Fairhope Library (TFOTFHL) has been quietly doing a fantastic service for newborns and their parents. This special group sews bibs and embroiders them with the words “Read to Me!” The bibs are then placed in gift bags which also include 1-2 books suitable for newborns. The baskets are given to new parents who have their babies at Thomas Hospital. What’s even more amazing is that they make approximately 125 bibs per month!
Phylis Fritchen is coordinator of the project known as “Raise-AReader.” It was begun in 2007 as a way to encourage literacy among the very youngest of us. The group meets most Wednesday mornings when they sew and embroider the bibs upstairs at the Fairhope Library. 68th Annual Roy Martin Young Anglers Tournament
The Roy Martin Young Anglers Tournament for kids 15 and under will take place on Saturday, July 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m. at the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo Site on Dauphin Island. The one-day fishing event typically attracts more than 1,500 young angers and features 32 categories with prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in all categories as well as a Master Angler. St. Michael Catholic School
Education has always been a priority for Dr. Kristina Andrews. With both of her parents and her grandmother serving as educators, pursuing higher education was a natural path. After earning multiple degrees from several institutions, she completed her academic journey by receiving a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Liberty University.
With 14 years of teaching experience, Dr. Andrews currently teaches 10th Grade College Preparatory English and Pre-AP English II at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope.
“I have always loved reading,” Dr. Andrews shared. “As a child, I was frequently at the library and was fortunate to have family members who encouraged me to read anything that interested me. As I grew older, I realized the power literature has to help students become more empathetic and better understand the world around them.”
She continued, “Students who are challenged to develop their critical thinking skills through reading benefit in every subject area. Literature has the power to build a foundation for growth for all students, regardless of their ability level. That’s why I find teaching English both exciting and impactful.”
A strong believer in the Socratic method, Dr. Andrews describes her teaching style as interactive and hands-on. She works to build meaningful relationships with her students, allowing her to connect them with both the material and one another. Adaptability has also become one of her greatest strengths in the classroom.
“Engagement is often dependent upon the teacher,” she said. “If the teacher is not excited about the content, students won’t be excited either. I strive to incorporate activities and strategies that are constantly changing. I never want my students doing the same thing for an entire lesson or class period because that can create monotony and lead to a lack of focus.”
Humbled and grateful to receive this award, Dr. Andrews is thankful that parents recognize the dedication she brings to her classroom and the accomplishments of her students.
When she isn’t teaching, Dr. Andrews enjoys spending time with her husband, Josh, and shuttling their four children to their many extracurricular activities. In her free time, she can often be found reading or creating acrylic and watercolor artwork.

Spanish Fort High School Girls Golf Team are State Champs
The BCBE Board of Education gave a letter of commendation to the Spanish Fort High School Girls Golf Team who won the 6A State Championship title. Team members include Sara Carter Hare, Ainsley Madden and Bailee Reaper. The team won at the Robert Trent Jones Magnolia Grove Golf Course in Mobile with a two-day total of 444, winning by 19 strokes. Sara Carter Hare posted 69 each day for a 138 total to take the 6A AHSAA title.
Ainsley Madden took home 5th place. The team is under the direction of Coach Emily Hudson

Awarded Energy Southeast Scholarships
Bayside Academy seniors Mary Burton Merchant and Forrest Smith have been awarded scholarships through the Energy Southeast Scholarship Program.
Only 39 high school seniors across the state received one of these scholarships, so we are very proud of these two students.
Each scholarship recipient receives a $2,500 scholarship. Since the scholarship program began in 1992, Energy Southeast and its members have provided more than $3.5 million in financial assistance to graduating seniors. To qualify for the scholarship, students must reside in a household that receives electric service from an Energy Southeast member utility and must attend an Alabama college, university, community college, or vocational school. This long-standing initiative reflects Energy Southeast’s commitment to supporting the educational and economic future of Alabama’s students.

St. Michael Catholic High School is excited to announce that Most Rev. Mark S. Rivituso, Archbishop of Mobile, has appointed Reverend Connor R. Plessala as Chaplain of St. Michael Catholic High School, effective June 26, 2026. Father Connor will also continue serving as Vocations Director for the Archdiocese of Mobile and will reside at St. Patrick Parish in Robertsdale.
This appointment marks a significant milestone in the history of St. Michael Catholic High School, as Father Connor becomes the school’s first dedicated chaplain.
Already a familiar and beloved presence on campus, Father Connor has spent the past two years building strong relationships with students, faculty, and families through his regular celebration of school Masses, leadership on retreats, and involvement with several athletic programs. In addition to his chaplaincy responsibilities, he will also teach theology classes, providing even more opportunities to mentor students and support their spiritual growth.

Named Athletes of the Week
Bayside Academy freshman and junior Jack Koch by the Mobile Optimist Club as the 1A–5A Athletes of the Week for their track and field performances at Sectionals. They were recognized at the Optimist Club’s meeting on May 14th and were joined by Bayside Academy Track and Field
At Sectionals, Avery won the 800-meter run and the 1600-meter run, with times and 5:35.94 respectively. She also was a member of Bayside’s winning 4x800-meter relay and second-place 4x400- meter relay. At Sectionals, Jack won the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles, with times of 16.47 seconds and 43.02 seconds. He cleared 5’10” in high jump to place third overall and was a member of Bayside’s eighth-place 4x400-meter relay. We are very proud of these student-athletes.

It happens every year as the end of summer approaches. The camp calendars are empty. The school supply lists have landed in inboxes. And somewhere between the back-to-school ads and the first fall sports practice reminder, panic creeps in.
Parents who feel this way are not alone. According to a survey of over 6,000 parents, 52% ranked the cost of back-to-school shopping as a top stressor, closely followed by getting kids up and ready in the morning at 51%.
But here is the truth that experienced parents know: the secret to a calm back-to-school fall is a proactive July. “The sooner you shift toward the routine you will have during the school year, the better,” says Dr. Nashedra Barry, a licensed psychologist. “Don’t wait until the night before to start enforcing a new bedtime. The more you do, the more prepared they feel for school and the less anxious they will be”.
Below is a timeline to help turn the back-to-school crunch into a manageable July breeze.
Early July - The Appointment Window Opens
Before you buy a single notebook, open your calendar and make the calls that have the longest wait times.
Schedule physicals. Some schools require updated immunization records and annual physical forms. Dr. Munish Kumar, a board-certified pediatrician, notes that these visits do more than check boxes: “We take a look at how they are developing and any changes in their health from previous years, or see if there is anything we need to adjust for the current year.” For children with chronic conditions, this is also the time to review medication dosages and refill prescriptions. When the physical is out of the way, book the dental and vision appointments. July appointments fill fast, but they are still easier to secure than the last-minute end of summer scramble.
Pro tip: Many pediatric offices and public health departments offer free sports physicals and immunization clinics in July. Check with your local providers.
Mid-July - The Sleep Shift Begins:
This is the single most important preparation step and the one that some families ignore. During summer, it is not uncommon for children and teens to stay up late and sleep well into the afternoon. Experts warn that this makes the back-to-school transition difficult if not addressed early.
Most experts recommend a gradual approach. Dr. Arvity Setty, a pediatric sleep specialist, notes, “It’s best to make gradual changes every few days to let their bodies adjust.” Depending on your child’s summer bedtime, you’ll need to give yourself enough time to gradually move the clock. Set bedtimes and wake-up times a little earlier every few days.
Dr. Tamara Kermani suggests a generous timeline, noting, “I usually recommend at least two weeks. Gradually smoothing out bedtimes and wake-up times will make the adjustment easier for students on the first day without a big sleep shock.”
Move bedtime earlier by 15–30 minutes every few nights. For a child who has been going to bed at 10 p.m. and needs an 8 p.m. school bedtime, start the first week of July and work backward.
Wind-down routines matter. Dr. Kermani recommends reading, listening to music, a light snack, or a warm bath or shower in the hour before bed. Keep bedrooms cool (68–70 degrees) and shut off electronic screens at least an hour before lights out.
Late July - Shopping with Strategy:
This is when the retailers hope you will panic buy. But if you start early, there’s no reason to. According to a Deloitte back-to-school survey, 61% of back-to-school spending occurs by the end of July. Large retailers are generally the top shopping destinations, with parents valuing one-stop convenience and the ability to see and touch items like backpacks and clothing.
By late July, buy non-perishable supplies, like notebooks, folders, pencils, backpacks, and lunch boxes. This is when selection is best and before popular items sell out.
Then purchase clothing and shoes, but involve your child in the process. Nearly two-thirds of parents say their children influence them to spend more, so set a budget together before you walk into the store.
Finally, buy consumables like personal care items and lunch-box snacks, which tend to be promoted closer to the school start date.
Pro Tip: For a teachable moment, family counsellor Alyson Schafer suggests giving older children a gift card or cash for their own supplies: “I think these are teachable moments that don’t need to be fights,” she says. “They should be seen as a way of developing skills and helping our kids learn how to be good decision-makers and learn from their mistakes.”
The Morning RehearsalOne Week Before School:
By now, the sleep schedule should be almost normalized. This week is about the other rituals.
Create a predictable morning routine. Involve your child in planning what needs to happen: getting dressed, eating breakfast, brushing teeth, and packing the backpack. Visual charts or checklists can help younger children follow the routine independently.
Do a dry run. One morning, actually go through the motions as if it were a school day. Wake up at the required time, eat breakfast, get dressed, and be “out the door” by the target time. This reveals hidden bottlenecks (like a child who takes 20 minutes to choose socks) before the real stakes are on the line.
Address anxiety head-on. Experts suggest normalizing back-to-school nervousness rather than dismissing it. Help them recall that they got through the first day of school jitters the previous year.
The Low-Stakes Finale On The Night Before:
If you’ve focused on gradual transitions, the first day of school should be a gentle bridge, not a frantic deadline. The night before school starts, lay out clothes, pack the backpack, charge any devices, and then stop. Take a walk. Read a book. Have a family dinner without talking about school.

Potty Training Children with Special Needs: A Kinder, More Effective Approach
Potty training is a major milestone for any child, but for children with developmental delays, language delays, sensory needs, or autism, the process often requires a different approach. Traditional methods that rely heavily on verbal instructions can leave both parents and children feeling frustrated.
As a BoardCertified Behavior Analyst and Licensed Professional Counselor, I’ve spent years helping hundreds of families successfully potty train their children with developmental delays. What I’ve learned is simple: children don’t struggle because they’re incapable. They struggle because most plans were not built for the way they learn.
Is Your Child Ready to Start?
The Routine Matters More Than Words
Many children with developmental or language delays learn best through repetitive routines, visual prompts, and hands on practice rather than long explanations. For example, if you consistently follow the same potty routine of sitting, trying, wiping, flushing, and washing hands every 20 minutes then your child will easily understand what to do without words.
A child is ready to begin when they can stay dry for short periods, follow simple routines, and tolerate sitting for brief periods of time when they are asked to do so. These indicators tell you their body and brain are prepared for learning, even if they are not ready to verbally communicate.
If your child can’t tell you they need to go, that’s okay. You can use timing and patterns to guide bathroom trips and then help your child learn to use sign language to communicate the need to go. Many children develop predictable rhythms, and you can build success by taking them at intervals that match their natural schedule.
How to Support Sensory Needs
For some children, the bathroom itself can be overwhelming. Bright lights, cold seats, loud flushing, or echoing
spaces can feel uncomfortable or even scary. Sometimes the solution is to change the environment by softening the lighting, limiting strong smells, or reducing noise. Other times, children need gentle exposure to help them gradually become comfortable in the space. When you take the time to adjust the environment and slowly desensitize your child to the bathroom, it creates a foundation of safety that makes learning possible.
Celebrate Even Small Progress
Potty training is a learning process with constant ups, downs, progressions, and regressions. Accidents are part of the journey, not a sign of failure. When you take the time to celebrate small wins like sitting on the toilet, staying dry a little longer, or recognizing body cues, you will slowly build confidence for both you and your child.

The Big Six of Small Business
Q. In your opinion, why do most small businesses fail? I’d also be interested to know which business reports you believe are most valuable to a small business owner.
A. There are many different reasons why small businesses go under. But in my mind, most fail due to poor financial management relating to cash flow problems caused by debt payments and a lack of budgeting. And these types of problems are often directly related to an owner having poor accounting practices and not staying on top of important numbers.
Once you learn a few of the basics, you’ll only need a few hours a month to get a handle on where things stand—and where they’re headed. Here are six financial reports I believe are crucial for small business owners to check every single month.
1) Profit & Loss Statement: Sometimes called an income statement or P&L, this report shows revenue minus expenses, and
either your net profit or loss. I still look at my company’s income statement every month. It gives me a quick snapshot of how each area of the business is performing.
2) Payables Report: This is a quick summary of who you owe money and the amount owed. If you owe something, pay it! It’s never a good idea to hold your money until the last second. My company clears bills every Tuesday, and that allows us to negotiate further discounts and build incredible goodwill with suppliers and vendors.
3) Receivables Report: This report shows who owes you money, how much they owe and the age of their debt. You know how I feel about debt, so I recommend not extending credit to anyone. If you feel you absolutely have to, keep it short term—30 days at most.

5) Checkbook Reconciliation: This is still the best way to verify that your bank account balance is correct, and with no errors. There is a lot of information out there about kids’ health. Instead of looking for the latest fad when it comes to health, it’s important to keep things simple. Focusing on three key elements will help you create a healthy foundation for your kids.
Focus on Good Nutrition for Kids
The possibilities for kids’ diets are endless. Should kids have convenience foods? Do their foods need to be organic? Should they eat school lunches? Every family will answer these questions differently for their kids’ nutrition. And that’s a good thing. What matters most is that your child consistently gets the variety of nutrients they need to grow.
Proper nutrition provides essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients children need for growth and development. This includes the development of bones, muscles, and organs, as well as brain development, which is crucial during the early years. Additionally, children are active and constantly growing, which means they need a steady supply of energy. Nutrientrich foods provide the energy they need to play, learn, and engage in daily activities.
Other benefits of proper nutrition include a strong immune system, improved mood, concentration, and cognitive abilities, and reduced risk of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and joint problems throughout their life. Good nutrition habits in childhood set the stage for healthy eating behaviors throughout their lives.
What Does Good Nutrition Look Like
Pediatricians often recommend the following nutrition guidelines to ensure healthy growth and development for kids:
Variety of Foods: Include a mix of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and dairy in your child’s diet. Aim for a colorful plate to ensure a range of nutrients.
Proportionality: Follow the MyPlate guidelines, which suggest making half the plate fruits and vegetables, one-quarter grains (preferably whole grains), and onequarter protein.
Minimize Added Sugars: Avoid foods and beverages with added sugars, such as candies, sodas, and sweetened cereals. Opt for naturally sweetened options like fruits.
Reduce Processed Foods: Limit processed and fast foods that are high in unhealthy fats, sodium, and sugars. Choose whole, unprocessed foods as much as possible.
Prioritize Water: Encourage children to drink water throughout the day. Limit sugary drinks like sodas, energy drinks, and fruit juices.
Milk and Dairy: Provide milk or fortified plant-based alternatives to ensure adequate calcium and vitamin D intake health.
Consistent Eating Schedule:
Establish regular meal and snack times to help children maintain energy levels and develop a routine.
Nutritious Snacks: Offer healthy snacks such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, yogurt, and whole-grain crackers instead of chips, cookies, or other high-calorie, low-nutrient options.
Listen to Hunger Cues: Teach children to recognize when they are hungry and when they are full. Encourage them to eat slowly and enjoy their food.
Age-Appropriate Portions: Serve portions that are appropriate for the child’s age and activity level. Avoid forcing children to clean their plates if they are full.
Get Your Kids Moving
It’s no surprise that a healthy body needs movement. As adults, we often think of this as exercise. But a healthier
approach, especially for children, is to see how to incorporate movement into your daily life. Shifting the focus from exercise to movement makes it feel less like a chore and more like a lifestyle. Movement allows for things that we enjoy.
Regular physical activity helps build and maintain strong muscles and bones, improves coordination and balance, and enhances overall physical strength. Movement also helps with mental health, brain function, cognitive development, teamwork, cooperation, communication, motor skills, and improved sleep.
Movement Tips for Kids
Encouraging a variety of movement activities can help children develop a love for movement and prevent them from getting bored. Staying active in ways they enjoy will contribute to their overall health and well-being. Anything that helps them move their body is a type of movement. Here are some ideas that are great for kids:
Nature Walks and Hikes: Explore local parks, trails, or nature reserves.
Playground Fun: Visit playgrounds where children can climb, swing, slide, and run freely.
Sports and Team Activities: Try a variety of sports that your child is interested in. Swimming, karate, baseball, and dance are a few of the many sports that promote physical fitness, teamwork, and social skills.
Family Bike Rides: Go for bike rides together as a family. This can be done on bike trails, in parks, or around the neighborhood.
Dance Parties: Have impromptu dance parties at home. Play their favorite music and let them dance around. Make sure you join in the fun!
Tag and Hide-and-Seek: Classic games like tag, hide-and-seek, and capture the flag can get kids moving.
Obstacle Courses: Set up obstacle courses in the backyard or living room using household items for kids to navigate.
Make Rest a Priority for Kids Health
One of the most overlooked aspects of health for children is adequate rest. With increasingly busy schedules it can be difficult to prioritize sleep. Pediatricians emphasize the importance of sleep for children as it plays a critical role in their overall health, development, and well-being.
Sleep is essential for physical growth, brain development, and the release of growth hormones. Adequate sleep also improves attention, learning, memory, and problem-solving skills. Rest can regulate hunger hormones and support healthy metabolism and immune system, reducing the risk of illness. There are even ties to sleep and behavior.
When you make good nutrition, movement, and sleep the focus, you will build a foundation for a healthy lifestyle for your kids. You don’t need to be perfect, but being intentional about these three things will help you and your family.

The Cycle of Digital/Tech Trauma
Parents often ask me why I spend so much time talking about social media, gaming, devices, and now AI. There are many reasons. One of the big ones is my concern about what happens when children become desensitized to what they see online.
Over the years, I developed a framework I call the Cycle of Digital Trauma. Most likely this name will evolve, but the concept remains the same. Have you ever looked at your child and wondered why they do what they do online? Children go online looking for connection. They want to feel seen, heard, understood, and accepted. That’s not a bad thing. In fact, it’s deeply human. The problem is what often happens once they get there. A child opens an app and encounters something disturbing, inappropriate, or emotionally intense. It may be pornography, graphic violence, hate speech, dangerous challenges, or content that simply isn’t appropriate for their age. And then a few seconds later, they’re watching something funny.

(Although I hold space here for the really BIG stuff that can occur through a single online experience. That can change lives.) But it’s the repetition. When children repeatedly encounter inappropriate content without intervention, they can begin to lose the ability to recognize how unhealthy or harmful it is. Then the cycle starts again. They return online seeking connection, entertainment, or stimulation. But now it often takes something bigger, louder, or more extreme to capture their attention. The cycle repeats. Over and over.

Research consistently shows us that our bodies are designed for real-world relationships. We thrive on eye contact, conversation, physical presence, and shared experiences. Technology can support connection, but it cannot fully replace it. If we don’t intentionally teach our children the value of authentic human connection, who will?
Then something shocking. Then something entertaining. Then something upsetting again.
Because so much of today’s online world is built around short-form content, children can move from one emotional extreme to another in seconds. Without guidance from a trusted adult, they can begin to adapt to what they’re seeing. Content that once felt disturbing becomes familiar. Familiar then becomes normal. This is where
As a former child abuse investigator, I’ve spent years studying how harmful patterns can repeat across generations when they are not interrupted. While the online world is very different, the principle is similar. If no one steps in to help children process what they are seeing, unhealthy experiences can become normalized. Case in point…I worked with a mom whose son had pornography that was shown to him by other elementary school students normalized because it had been normalized for the coach who “intervened” with the children. He grew up watching things online. He explained to the mom, “It is ok. It is just the way things are. They are going to see stuff.”
That’s why I believe today’s parents play such an important role. Many of us are the last generation that remembers life before social media. We remember riding bikes, knocking on friends’ doors,
Protecting kids online isn’t about creating fear. It isn’t about banning every app or eliminating every screen. (Although would it be so bad for them to be completely analog til at least 16?) It is about being the intervening voice. It’s about checking devices, having conversations, setting boundaries, and helping children make sense of what they encounter online before it becomes normal.
Most importantly, it’s about reminding them that their need for connection is real—but the healthiest forms of connection still happen person-to-person. Technology will continue to evolve. Social media will change. AI will grow more sophisticated. Our job as parents isn’t to stop progress. Our job is to make sure our children don’t lose themselves in it.

Character development is minimal but, as expected, the special effects are superb.

ESP: What do you love most about raising a family in Fairhope?
SN: I love the sense of community and the slower pace of life here. Fairhope has such a special kind of beauty — from the sunsets over the bay to the simple everyday moments that make life feel meaningful. My children grew up surrounded by, water, nature, creativity, and people who genuinely care for one another, and I’m so grateful for that.
ESP: How has motherhood influenced your art and creativity?
SN: Motherhood changed the way I see beauty in the world. Becoming a mother made me notice light, color, emotion, and fleeting moments in a much deeper way. So much of my artwork is inspired by sunshine, water, movement, and joy — all things that remind me of my children and the life we’ve built together.
ESP: What inspired you to become an elementary art teacher?
SN: I always loved art, but I also always loved children. Elementary art felt like the perfect combination of creativity, imagination, and connection. Over the years, my students have inspired me just as much as I’ve taught them. Honestly, they’re a huge part of why I started sharing and selling my own artwork about 10 years ago.
ESP: What is your favorite part of teaching children art?
SN: The joy and freedom they create with. Children approach art so fearlessly and authentically, and being around that every day is incredibly inspiring. My students constantly remind me to create more freely, take risks, and not overthink the process. They’ve influenced my own artwork in more ways than they probably realize.
ESP: How have your children shaped the woman and mother you are today?
SN: My children have shaped every part of who I am. They’ve taught me patience, perspective, resilience, and unconditional love. Each of them is so different, and watching them grow into who they are has stretched and strengthened me in the best ways. They’ve also deeply influenced my creativity and the way I see beauty in the world. Between motherhood and teaching children every day, I’m constantly inspired to create with more joy, wonder, and gratitude. I truly feel both motherhood and teaching have made me softer, stronger, and more grateful.
ESP: What is something you hope your children learned from watching you pursue your passion?
SN: I hope they learned that creativity matters and that it’s never too late to keep growing or pursuing something you love. I hope they saw the value of working hard, staying inspired, and creating a life filled with purpose and joy.
ESP: How does your family encourage your creative work?
SN: My family has always been my biggest support system. My husband, Jon, has encouraged every creative idea I’ve ever had — while also keeping me grounded when needed. My children constantly inspire me, encourage me, and cheer me on. They’ve all played such a huge role in helping me continue creating.
ESP: What does this season of life with a teenage daughter look like for your family?
SN: It’s a sweet mix of independence and togetherness. Lizzie keeps our home full of energy and life, and even though her older siblings have homes and lives of their own now, she still has a way of bringing everyone back together. This season feels busy, emotional, joyful, and incredibly special all at once.
ESP: How do you balance motherhood, teaching, and your own artistic goals?
SN: Some days better than others! I’ve learned that balance doesn’t always mean everything gets equal time every day. Sometimes family needs more of me, sometimes teaching does, and sometimes creativity does. I try to give myself grace and keep creating in whatever small moments I can.

Jon and Shannon Noble are college sweethearts who have shared 26 years of marriage and a lifetime of memories. They are proud parents of three children: Shelby, Jon Wesley, and Lizzie. While Shelby and Jon Wesley have grown up and established homes of their own, 15-year-old Lizzie continues to bring the family together on a regular basis.
When she’s not working, Shannon can often be found chasing sunsets along the bay—a hobby that has earned her the title of “selfproclaimed sunset chaser.” She also loves spending time in the kitchen, where cooking provides a creative outlet and a chance to slow down, unwind, and connect with those she loves.
