Ballet is known for its technnique, precise and graceful movements. Through good technique, ballet uses strength, flexability and teaches very good posture.
Arabesque
A ballet pose where the dancer stands on one straight leg (supporting leg) while the other leg is extended straight behind them in the air.
Arabesque origniates from the Italian word arabesco meaning “Arabian in fashion”. The word is more associated in art using flowing lines.
I have done 12 years worth of dancing in my life and I suddenly miss it. Through 9 years of ballet, I have completed the NZAMD syllabus.
Releve
A movement where a dancer rises (through a pull movement) from flat feet, to balance on the balls of the feet, or the tips of the toes.
Releve originates from the french word relever, meaning “to raise” or “lift up”.
I enjoyed the many years of dancing and it has taught me so many skills. Ballet is hard work, and requires a lot of practice, but is worth it in the end.
Pirouette
A controlled rapid spin on one leg, turning away from the supporting leg, on the ball of the foot, or the tips of the toes.
Pirouette originates from the old French word pirouet, meaning a “spinning top”.
