You Donât Need To Be Crazy...
âPeople often avoid seeing a psychologist because they think they arenât âbad enoughâ, says Dr Natalie Shockley, Clinical Psychologist and owner of growing psychology practice, Samford Psychology. âItâs not unusual for someone to report theyâve been struggling for months but felt they needed to be âmore unwellâ before seeing someone.â There can also be feelings of shame or failure when people realise theyâre struggling in life, which makes seeking assistance harder. Experiencing feelings of depression, anxiety and stress doesnât necessarily mean one has a psychiatric âillnessâ, people may just be going through a difďŹcult time and their emotions are telling them that life isnât âokayâ right nowâŚ... So what can we do when life gets difďŹcult? Looking after ourselves is always important, but it becomes more
important when life becomes challenging. Eating well, getting enough sleep, regular exercise, taking time out to have fun and relax, and spending time with supportive people are helpful generally. The times when it feels hardest to do these things are the times when we need them the most. âAnd of course, if you ďŹnd you keep struggling with difďŹcult emotions, talking to health professionals can provide that much-needed extra assistance. Itâs often better to seek assistance sooner rather than later. Talking to someone objective and empathetic can be a great helpâ said Natalie. Samford Psychology has several therapists who can be of assistance, including art therapists, clinical psychologists and registrars, along with the most recent addition of Provisional Psychologist, Sonya Melbourne.
