President's MESSAGE
H
ello fellow Southdown enthusiasts! It’s that time of year where we can start to see the success of our breeding programs. Did the new ram work, did the show ewe have a winner? Well, we will soon find out. Online sales have been selling extremely well and live sales will soon be starting. You won’t want to miss the National Southdown Sale, Ohio Showcase, or the Midwest Stud Ram Sale. There will be a great selection of breeding stock to fit all your needs. Our Junior shows will also be starting soon with the Spring Kickoff Show in Noblesville, Indiana, which is held in conjunction with the National Sale; the Southdown Classic in Richmond, Indiana; and the All –American Junior Show in Springfield, Massachusetts. Information on these events is on our website or Facebook page. We will also be introducing new classes “Bred and Owned.” Looking forward to seeing and visiting with everyone at these events and wishing all the best success. Cordially your President,

Secretary's MESSAGE
W
hen I purchased my first Southdown ewe from Sheila Sink, I never dreamed 22 years later I would be writing the Secretary’s Message for the Spring Southdown Journal. Looking back now, I can see how raising Southdowns, being involved in 4-H and FFA, working for the National Swine Registry and even motherhood have all guided my path to this position. During the interview for the Executive Secretary position, L.C. Scramlin asked about my vision for the Southdown breed in the next ten years. It’s a question I was anticipating, but still one I struggled with internally. While I think it is necessary for the leadership of this organization to have a plan, I also think it’s equally necessary for the leadership to be willing to adjust their vision to meet the needs of the membership. What I think the association needs or should look like in ten years might be the opposite of what the collective membership thinks. And, as time goes by, there will be new opportunities and challenges for the association to meet that we can’t imagine today. To have a true vision for our association will take a team effort. This is where you, the member, comes in. I have two challenges to set before you. The first is to be open in your communication. If you have an idea or suggestions, share it with me or a member of the Board of Directors. If you have a complaint, share that too. Of course, if you have a compliment, we would all prefer to hear that. The point is, if you want to see something happen, speak up. We as a Board will also try to be open in our communication to keep you informed on what is happening. The second challenge is for you to hold me accountable. Serving the members is my main goal in this position. If I am not doing that, I need to know. Our association is founded on integrity and service, and I intend to preserve that legacy as long as I am in this position. From the moment I purchased that first Southdown ewe, I have considered the people and the programs of this association some of the best in the livestock industry. Let’s all work together to keep our association moving forward and one that everyone wants to be a part of.

Letter FROM THE EDITOR
H
ello from Wisconsin! It is just barely feeling like spring here, although by the time you get this, maybe it will feel a bit warmer. It was a sunny but cool day when I captured the images on the front and back covers recently... thank you to my neighbors, the Hady family, that let me stop by their house and take some photos of their spring lambs! This will be the first spring issue of the Journal that the ASBA has put out in several years. It’s because of your support that the ASBA Board of Directors has given me the go ahead to release this spring issue. Creating the Journal provides me with a lot of joy... designing layouts, working with breeders on ads, and reflecting on past show results. Thank you for your trust in me as Editor of the Journal - the fun is just getting started! Putting together this issue was a time for me to reflect on Louisville and the end of last year. The Southdown breed had a tremendous showing at NAILE, as usual. The quality was again superb and I’m always impressed by not only the quality of the sheep, but how the juniors in the breed set the standard for talent in the sheep industry. Of course, in addition to a great show, we also saw the passing of the torch at Louisville to Ann Fry as the new Executive Secretary of the ASBA. Ann and I were both Block & Bridle members at Purdue (along with her husband, Matt!) and it’s fun for me to reflect on how far that group of Boilermakers has come. Since November, I’ve been working more closely with both Ann and Stephanie Formo, the ASBA Junior Coordinator, on several projects. I would be remiss not to mention the respect I have for these two women and to say how much I enjoy working with them. As we creep into show and sale season, the next several weeks will bring with them a lot of renewed travel and activity. I’m excited to get back to some sheep shows and visit with friends and sheep breeders again. If you see me, stop and say hi!

Introducing ANN FRY, ASBA SECRETARY
F
or the first time since 1989, the American Southdown Breeders’ Association has a new Executive Secretary: Ann Fry. Ann was selected after interviews that concluded with a final round at NAILE, following the retirement of longtime secretary Gary Jennings. Ann answered some questions below to help us get to know her!
First, just tell us a little bit about you and your background.
I have been married to my husband, Matt Fry, for 9 years. We have two children, George, 5, and Betsy, 3. After serving as an Indiana State FFA Officer for one year, I attended Purdue University. I graduated in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Economics. I was employed as the Advertising Coordinator & Assistant Editor at the National Swine Registry until George was born.
What is your history in the sheep industry and with the Southdown breed?
I told my parents I wanted to show sheep to earn money after watching a 4-H livestock 10
auction. My parents decided to test my level of commitment by arranging for me to help our neighbor down the road with his sheep flock. Much to their delight (or dismay; I’m not sure which), they learned I was very committed. I purchased my first Southdown ewe in 2000 and quickly realized very few are in this business for the money. My brother and I showed Southdowns at our county fair, Indiana State Fair and several All-American Junior Shows and National Southdown Junior Shows. After my time as a junior was over Bechman Family Southdowns continued raising and selling sheep for other juniors to exhibit. Being involved with the Southdown breed taught me so many lessons, introduced me to so many people and gave me more experiences than money can buy.
What made you consider applying for the ASBA Secretary position?
I have a passion for the livestock industry and
in particular the Southdown breed. I know how my life has been influenced by raising and showing Southdowns, particularly by the extraordinary people involved in the breed. I hope to be able to positively influence other young people as the Executive Secretary. I believe in the ASBA’s purpose of collecting, verifying, preserving and publishing information of the history, management and pedigrees of purebred Southdown sheep.
more opportunities for growth. I would like to somehow engage young Southdown breeders in the association when they complete their junior show career. I would love to see a fullfledged online registration program in the near future.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I spend a lot of time with my children and in a barn. I am still part of Bechman Family Southdowns, and I help my husband with his Shorthorn cattle when I can. I am also involved in our church and Bible Study Fellowship.
What has been your experience so far as the Secretary?
One of the things I have noticed so far is how many people have commented they are new, or they have never registered sheep with us before. I think that is a testament to the quality of the Southdown breed. We are attracting new families who don’t just want to show Southdowns, but who also want to raise them and put their own stamp on the breed.
What are you looking forward to in the next year and further into the future for the Southdown breed?
I am looking forward to attending the upcoming shows and sales and meeting more breeders and members. I want people to see Southdowns as the premier breed. I think the new Bred and Owned class and the rejuvenation of the junior board are a couple of excellent ways to reach that distinction. I also think there a lot

GENETIC TESTING As of January 1, 2022, the ASBA policy states sheep sold at sales sponsored by the association are free of Hereditary Chondrodysplasia (spider), Ectodermal Dysplasia (hairy lamb), Ovine Dwarfism and contain a minimum of one “R” at codon 171. Bred & Owned PROGRAM The ASBA will begin recognizing our young breeders who are doing a lot of year round work to build their programs at home, and who are showing their own outstanding stock by beginning to offer bred and owned champion selection at shows sponsored by the ASBA. For 2022 we will present this award at the Classic. Ownership requirements: Dam must be registered in name of exhibitor or sibling group at the time of breeding. The animal being exhibited must be registered in exhibitor’s name at time of show. Any questions or disputes will be evaluated by show management and board members present. Animals will be tracked during the show and the two highest placings in each age class will be brought back for a junior, senior and overall champion with banners presented at the shows. This program will include both rams and ewes. We look forward to this added feature and seeing our outstanding young people showcasing all their hard work.

The Junior Southdown sheep project is the perfect combination of youth and livestock. One of the most successful programs to prove this is the Pot O’ Gold Futurity Program! Ewe Lamb, Fall Ewe Lamb, Market Lambs and Yearling Ewe Futurity competitions are open to junior Southdown members who purchase futurity nominated ewes or wethers. Futurity animals can compete at an unlimited number of shows with only the top five point award shows being recorded as the Futurity point total. Fill out the points submission form online or via a printable form submitted within 14 days of the show to accumulate points. Standings can be viewed on the website, updated throughout the show season. Final awards are given at NAILE yearly. For more information, check out southdownsheep.org/juniors

ASBA Scholarships Awarded 2021 In its fifteenth year, seven applications were received in the ASBA office by September 1. Applicants were from California, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Maryland, Texas, and Missouri, representing the junior membership from widespread parts of the country. The top three sets of scores for the $1,000 scholarships were from

who were presented their awards at the November annual meeting held in Louisville. Avery Flanagan, daughter of Scott and Mylea Flanagan, Ballinger, Texas, has started work on an Animal Science degree at Texas A&M, planning to do a Master’s Degree in large animal reproduction with the goal of becoming a veterinarian specializing in small ruminant reproduction. She is a fifth-generation sheep rancher working with her family’s 100 registered Southdown ewes. Active in 4-H, Avery has won the State Fair of Texas Sheep Skillathon and twice won the San Antonio Sheep Skillathon as well as the intermediate Southdown Skillathon held during the NAILE. She competed successfully in state livestock judging and was selected to be a Texas 4-H Livestock Ambassador to advocate for agriculture. Her Southdown shows included state and national events and NAILE. Last year Avery was a state finalist in the Texas Farm Bureau Free Enterprise speech contest and was selected to represent Texas as a Borlaug scholar and a delegate to the World Food Prize Global Institute. Carson Lobdell, son of Troy and Barb Lobdell, Darlington, Wisconsin, is in his second year at Lincoln Land Community College finishing an Agribusiness Management degree and competing on the livestock judging team. He plans to continue helping his dad raising Southdowns on the family farm until he can have a place of his own while working in agricultural equipment sales. Active in both 4-H and FFA service activities, his high school focus was FFA competitions such as Parliamentary Procedure, Creed Speaking, and livestock judging, topping it off by being state winner and national Swine finalist, state sheep winner and national finalist, and this past year was the state Diversified Livestock Production winner. Carson has shown Southdowns at All-American and NAILE as well as state shows, and has been actively involved with the Wisconsin Southdown Association and the development of the regional junior show held at the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival.

Olivia Scuderi, daughter of Stephanie and Vince Scuderi, Gaithersburg, Maryland, is a sophomore at the University of Maryland with a Pre-Vet major in Animal Science. She plans to attain a Ph D in Animal Science and return to the family farm to do research with agricultural corporations in hope of finding better ways to preserve livestock and public health. In addition to managing her own small flock since 2013, having successes such as Supreme Ewe at Maryland State Fair and winning Lead Line at NAILE with her own ewe lamb, Olivia has been a serious advocate for agriculture. Having been a student at a private school in a city outside the District of Columbia, she experienced first hand the lack of knowledge people have about their food. As a Farm Bureau Ambassador she personally talked with legislators at the Maryland State House on the importance of bills to support FFA and joined Sigma Alpha her freshman year at UMD to help bring “Ag in the Classroom” back to local schools.
