W
e will have a big turnout for the 2022 National Columbia Show and Sale. I would like to thank the National Show and Sale Committee and all the hard-working volunteers that make it run behind the scenes. Every year, the NSS Committee attempts to check off more boxes while keeping our traditions. The 2022 schedule is expanded so the Juniors can include more activities. The pop-up time was highly successful in Sidney. More pop-up time is scheduled with Whit Stewart from the University of Wyoming leading the program. The Fleece Sale was another success in Sidney. The Facebook silent auction put our wool on the market for more than 20,000 wool artists. Facebook Live will be in use this year so the world can watch what the CSBA is doing in Cheyenne. Best of all, Facebook Live allows a live audience to ask questions and interact from miles and miles away. If you were in Sidney, you saw me with my red notebook. I visited with as many of you as I could. Last year’s questions focused on record keeping. Overwhelmingly, I learned everyone collects data to fit your situation and to fit your market. You all track your sheep differently. I, also, learned many of you are using technology from your phone. Mothering ability, milking ability, and live lambs at weaning are extremely important to you. If you have a ram market, with repeat buyers, I learned it is all about the relationship you have with your buyers. I will have my red notebook with me in Cheyenne. This year I want to hear more about how you market lamb and wool other than at a show and sale. Do you sell to the community, farm to table, farmer’s market, or private sales? The ASI weekly email newsletter from, April 1, reported “The Northeast is the highest selling lamb region in the United States. The South-Central US saw an explosion of dollar sales. The Plains saw the largest percent increase in volume sales of any region.” I agree. This year, I sold lamb off the farm for at least twice the market price because I found a unique market. I want to know if you are using Facebook, Online Sales, or Instagram? I notice how Facebook users post sheep from birth and throughout its life to educate their audience. I want to know more about coating sheep and selling fleeces on Etsy, through online groups or if/ how you are using traditional markets to your advantage. An excellent webinar was done this spring by Travis Hoffman, ND/MN Extension Sheep Specialist. He hosted an online panel about marketing decisions for sales-barn oriented markets and for an ethnic market. You can find the webinar tape online. I learned that you are building a buyer base online. You told me social media sells rams, wool, and lamb. Another thing I have investigated is real-time meetings. I have talked to several breed associations that use online, live meetings. It is the trend, and it works. Your CSBA Board of Directors uses both, for its quarterly meetings. We vote using a Zoom polling feature. If you have kids or grandkids you know how important live feeds were during COVID. I am the project manager for a large construction firm. I work in the Boston area. I communicate 4

with other contractors and sub-contractors everyday using an online, real-time method. It works but there is a learning curve. Nearly every time I write this message, I invite you to give me a call, text me, shoot me an email, message me, or write me a letter. If you have a plan and a budget for something you want to do, let me know - or track me down in Cheyenne. I will put your thoughts and plan in my red notebook!

The CSBA will hold its annual membership meeting on Thursday, June 9, 2002, at the Event Center in Archer, Cheyenne, Wyoming. CSBA is classified as a non-stock corporation and maintains non-profit status by North Dakota Statute 10-33. One senior member, in good standing, will receive an agenda and ballot which entitles that member with the right to vote. Robert’s Rules of Order is followed for the adoption of business. A By-Law Amendment requires 2/3 affirmative vote for passage.

ello from Wisconsin! Let me introduce myself as your new Editor of Speaking of Columbias. Some of you know me from years in the show ring, as I’ve spent my entire life raising and showing sheep. Last year, I increased my involvement with the Columbia breed by serving as your official photographer at the 2021 National Show & Sale in Sidney, Ohio, and I’m excited to take on Speaking of Columbias as well. I grew up traveling with my parents as they fit and showed sheep for a living. This childhood granted me connections throughout the country, which are so invaluable today! I attended Purdue University where I received a BS in Agricultural Communication with a minor in Animal Science and was a member of the 2009 Livestock Judging Team. Afterwards, I received an MS in Agricultural Communication from Oklahoma State University. In 2010 (while I was still at Purdue), I began working for Novel Designs, where I still work full time today. I’m a Web Designer & Graphic Designer at Novel Designs where among many things, I work on the CSBA website! I have also been growing my own business, KAK Creative, which began as I started getting more involved with photography in 2012. Now, I regularly serve as a photographer at national shows, including the Columbia National Show & Sale, National Southdown Show & Sale, All-American Junior Show, and Big E in Massachusetts, among others. I also enjoy doing on-farm photos for online sales or editorial content. In 2020, I took over the role as Editor of the American Southdown Breeders Association Journal and Directory, which has led me to extensive involvement with the Southdown breed - I now serve as their Communications Coordinator and assist with other media projects throughout the year. I recently accepted the job as Editor of the Continental Dorset Club Directory, which is published bi-annually. Besides my professional involvement, I still have sheep as well! I raise Natural Coloreds which reside on my parent’s farm, where I also help them with their Montadales and Cheviots. I think one of my biggest assets in this industry is being able to relate to livestock breeders, because that’s what I started as and continue to be. There’s a special bond between people that know the frustrations of a particularly cold lambing season! When I’m not at a sheep show, in front of a computer, or behind a camera, I like to watch live music, ski, play guitar (and a little banjo!), and go to CrossFit. I’m so looking forward to catching up with all of you in Cheyenne! T
o begin this Secretary’s Message, I will encourage you to read the article “CSBA is PROUD of STARTER FLOCK RECIPIENTS” on page 64. In fact, I encourage you to read it first and then, return.
My parents bought four Columbia ewes and joined the CSBA in 1952. The sheep grazed twenty-five acres in the outskirts of Chaska which was a growing suburb of the Twin Cities. Once I came into the picture, the sheep transitioned to my 4-H and FFA projects. I joined the CSBA in 1984. The sheep followed me to my first job as an adult farm management teacher in outstate Minnesota. In 1991, I became a member of the CSBA Board. These are the Columbia breeders I sat down with at my first CSBA meeting: Harry Maddux, Gwen Bassetti, Lee Jarvis, Yogi Braet, Billy Dan Sorrell, Gordon Darlinton, Troy Freeburg, Steve Kitzan, Dave Smith, Jack Wilson, Bob Gucker, and most importantly was Dick Gerber who became my life mentor. So, there I was--a kid with 20 Columbia ewes. I repeat—I was a kid with a handful of Columbia sheep. That meeting defined my understanding of the CSBA and the CSBA Board of Directors. At the time, the Board was addressing the need for a computerized pedigree and accounting system. The Board had hired a professional programmer, but it was not working out. But suddenly, the Board had a kid with a few sheep—and he came with computer skills. At my first meeting, the Board asked a lot of questions. I asked questions. It did not take long, and the Board had a plan and budget. Soon Dick and I put a system together which embraced this new technology. 31 years later the CSBA has nearly 90,000 pieces of genetic, Columbia data. In 2015, I was fitting sheep at the NAILE. The Board was holding its winter meeting. (I was not on the BoD.) I was asked to step into the meeting. I did. This time I sat down with new BoD faces but their intent was like the 1991 Board. They wanted the registry back with the CSBA. It was contracted out in 2006, and registration and transfer rates were going up. They asked questions. I asked questions. Seven years later, we have a stand-alone registry that has saved CSBA members $17,000. At the same NAILE Board meeting, Facebook and the CSBA website were brought up. The CSBA had the beginnings of both. (Keep in mind this is only seven years ago.) The young members of the BoD explained both, and how the CSBA could use both. Quickly, the BoD had a plan and the CSBA was online—in a big way! That prompted the BoD to upgrade the Speaking of Columbias magazine and build a website. Today we have nearly 2,000 followers on Facebook and Instagram. I mention these snippets of my CSBA history because it resonates with the story of our 2021 starter flock recipients. History tells me the CSBA evolves. It evolves because of new, persistent members who ask questions and call on willing mentors. They are willing to climb the learning curve. They have a plan which fits their needs. And, probably most important, they are self-advocates for their personal goals as Columbia sheep producers. 8

eriodically, it is good to assess the recent past and the significant, tangible progress made in the recent past---especially the last seven years. A little history is good. It shows progress—some of which gets lost because life moves so quickly.
Only seven years ago, the CSBA was in a tough spot. Registrations had dropped 50% from 2006 to 2014. The checkbook was depleted. But here we are, in 2022, with a solid financial standing, and excellent cash flow. As you look at this list, think about the volunteer hours and donations made behind the scenes, that enable us to celebrate Columbia sheep each year. Keep in mind the hours it takes to maintain these things, too. • Vertically integrated registration, transfer, pedigree, and accounting system • Stand-alone, financially strong, National Show and Sale that rotates to regional locations and is attended by approximately two hundred each year. • The intangible benefits of the National Show and Sale go without saying. • The National Show and Sale, in Ohio, resulted in the highest, overall average for a National Sale. • A Futurity program that results in measurable financial rewards for the youth and CSBA consignors. • Addition of a part-time Executive Secretary • The flexibility to adapt to an online National Sale in 2020. Members responded. We sold sheep for excellent prices. We demonstrated an alternative way to market Columbia sheep. With cooperation and volunteerism, sheep were moved from coast to coast. • A NSS Fleece Sale that opened markets to more than 20,000 wool crafters • Increased market for Columbia rams resulting in great averages at the National Ram Sale - $1,278, Wyoming Ram Sale - $1,233, and increased averages with more rams sold at Newell, Hettinger, and Lewistown • Use of Facebook Live at the National. It exposes Columbia sheep to the world. • Pop-up, educational events at the NSS • Facebook and Instagram with near 2,000 followers—extends to other sheep breeds • Natural Colored Columbias added to the pedigree tracking and registry • Website services that provide excellent business services, allows for online event entries, and is a source of reliable information about Columbia sheep. This year 32 out of 35 consignors went online to make entries and pay fees. • Starter Flock Program – talk to the starter flock recipients. • The move toward judges with commercial and purebred background. Recent judges belong to NSIP, administrate a Certified Ram program, are University Sheep Extension staff, market lamb completely off the farm, and/or are considered experts in wool grading and/or classing. • Increased Junior activities with involvement and collaboration – examples are the fitting contest, video and photo contest, skill-a-thon, sponsorship of the All-American Jr Show • Facebook membership drive. • Re-establishment and development of committees like Promotion, Youth, Starter Flock, and Commercial • NSS wool show has increased 200% since 2016 • Ram Certification Standard in place - focus on production numbers • More rams on the Wyoming and Hettinger Ram Test • Board meeting minutes and financial reports available to members • Website that allows for educational materials available to visitors. Ninety-five percent of CSBA business is done online allowing members more accuracy and quicker turnaround on business related items, resulting in the Association and members saving time and money. The largest demographic that used the website so far in 2022 are 18-24 years in age = 27.5% and 25-34 years = 33.5%. Interesting. Progress is not on the shoulders of one person nor the board. Progress begins with self-advocacy. Listen to our starter flock recipients. Ask questions and climb the learning curve. Nearly every day I hear from a Columbia person. The most common questions I get are about the basics—feeds, fitting, and facilities. I always recommend a nearby breeder as a resource. Experience is the best teacher. Beyond that, the world-wide web and Facebook are tremendous resources. If you aren’t on Facebook, find a kid. If you want to set up a sheep forum—start one from your personal Facebook page. If you want to be informed about the latest technology, I highly recommend you follow the webinars being sponsored by Travis Hoffman and Premier, the podcasts and weekly emails from the ASI (American Sheep Industry,) or enter a ram test. Finally, let me address the significance of the National Columbia Show and Sale. I am not sympathetic when someone criticizes the National Show. It is not just about awards. It is about different breeders offering different pieces of sheep that may fit your needs. You get to make that buying decision—regardless of what the judge says. If you are a consignor, you are the best at generating excitement about your sheep. Put your sheep out in the public eye. The best form of advertising is word of mouth—make sure you are telling your story—no one does it better. The National Show and Sale is your opportunity to sell and buy sheep on the most visible platform we have. And I will repeat-- the intangible benefits go without saying. As an Association, we respect financial sustainability. We have made progress from countless volunteers putting in countless hours of work over many years. Columbias are the best in the barn because we have the best people in the barn, who care about Columbias - past, present, and future. No other purebred sheep association offers what we do at our National Show and Sale to ALL segments of our membership. Please stop and talk with me about anything and everything “Columbia” in Cheyenne. My Fitbit told me I had twenty-one hours of sleep in Sidney. I can go with even less sleep for Columbia sheep and Columbia sheep people in Cheyenne.

proposed amendment to by-laws Per the Columbia Sheep Breeders Association of America (CSBA) By-Laws, you are given notice of the annual meeting slated for June 9th, 2022, at 5 PM, at the Archer Event Center, in Cheyenne, WY. Three By-Law amendments will be on the agenda and presented for a vote at the annual meeting. By-Law amendment requires a 2/3 affirmative vote for passage. There are three (3) By-Law Amendment proposals. Deleted language is printed in red with a line through the print. New language is printed in blue. By-Law Amendment Proposal #1 - ARTICLE IV ARTICLE IV MEMBERS Section 1— Members: There shall be no capital stock in this Association. Any reputable breeder of Columbia sheep may become a member by application to the Association and by paying a membership fee. (Junior memberships through 21 years of age are $15. Senior memberships 22 years or age or older are $50.) Membership shall not be transferable and may be canceled without notice for non-user at the direction and discretion of the Directors at any time a member has not recorded sheep with the Association for a period of not less than two years. Notice of such cancellation shall thereupon be sent by the Secretary, by mail to the former member at the post office address of record with the Association. Membership shall be limited to one application per entity as determined by legal residency. Section 2 — Annual Dues: Association dues are to be paid on or before the first transaction of business each calendar year. The Board of Directors shall establish annual association dues and fees. Senior membership dues at $50 per year. Junior membership dues are $15 per year. For voting rights, senior membership dues must be paid. By-Law Amendment Proposal #2 - ARTICLE VI ARTICLE VI Notice of meetings shall be given to each Director by mail or digital correspondence at their post office address or email address on file with the Association, giving each Director ample time to attend such meeting. By-Law Amendment Proposal #3 - ARTICLE VI ARTICLE VI Section 3 - Nomination and Voting Procedures: The Nomination & Absentee Balloting Procedures shall be defined by the Board of Directors, upon annual review, to provide equitable and accessible voting procedures for current members.

board candidates MARGARET ELLER – MOUNTAIN TIME ZONE CANDIDATE FOR DIRECTOR I am honored to have served on CSBA’s Board of Directors since 2018; I seek support for another term. My husband and I, both retired, have a diversified operation in central MT with irrigated hay, dryland pasture, cow/calf pairs, and 70+ ewes. We market lambs at 90 pounds through local sale barns. Thus, commercial aspects of the sheep industry are important to me, and my position as Commercial Production Committee chair has felt like a good fit. Upholding the committee’s mission— to support and advance the use of Columbia sheep in the commercial sheep industry—is not a solo job. I depend on committee members who share my passion for the mission; I am grateful to those who help carry the workload. My candidacy is based on the committee’s record of achievement, coupled with my commitment to an expanded role for Columbias in the commercial sheep industry. The Commercial Production Committee spearheaded an update of breed standards, revised a fledgling Certified Ram Program that has grown in support and stature, created the three-part wool video on the CSBA website, provides content to Production Corner on the CSBA website, and submits tiny “Knowledge Nuggets” to SoC, as well as features and articles for SoC, The Shepherd, The Banner, regional Ag newsletters, and local newspapers. Current efforts have been guided by CSBA members who responded to our Fall 2021 survey, You voiced support for integrating data into flock management. In response, we provided a comprehensive, free, voluntary flock records tool. The portion of the tool devoted to lamb productivity automatically computes Weight/Day of Age, Average Daily Gain, Adjusted Weaning Weight (AWW) and AWW Ratio. Both the survey results and the Data Collection Tool are available on the Production Corner tab of CSBA’s website. You expressed interest in a wool workshop at NSS. In response, the committee is organizing “Wool—Tools for Evaluation,” a three-part workshop that includes: • A hands-on educational session with Dr. Whit Stewart. • An opportunity for attendees to practice wool judging and compare their judgments to wool lab data and wool experts’ comments. • A display of fleeces with undesirable fibers that can disqualify Columbias from registration. With continued support from CSBA members, and forward-thinking, hard-working committee members who envision a larger role for Columbia Sheep in the sheep industry, I hope to continue my work. STEVE HAMPSON – EASTERN TIME ZONE CANDIDATE FOR DIRECTOR I would like to take this opportunity to thank the CSBA and all the members for the opportunity to serve as your President over the last few years, it has been my pleasure. I have learned a great deal. You all know I am a good listener. I will have the red notebook in Cheyenne. I look at the Columbia business a bit differently because I have different markets and different opportunities. I have a contract to sell every lamb off the farm at very good prices. I live in an area where lamb consumption is on the rise. I am within driving distance to Boston. Wool crafting is popular in the Northeast and that changes how I look at selling wool. I find it very important to include the Eastern part of the US in our conversations about selling lamb and wool. Our efforts to advance our product is not limited to traditional markets. Expansion depends on reaching out to unique populations such as where I live. I am a believer in technology. I work as a project manager and, right now, I’m overseeing the building of a hospital. Technology is something you must commit to. Social media builds businesses and it sells sheep. Look at all the online sales. We can communicate and move sheep easily. I see how you are expanding sales online in cooperation with other breeds. Columbias are stacking up and getting great prices, especially in the futurity programs. My wife and I are reaching that stage in life where we are looking to retirement and life with Columbia sheep and the farm. Like most, we want to travel and spend more time with our kids and grandkids - but Columbias will still fit in the plan. We have three married daughters and four grandchildren. In addition to producing grain crops, we also raise registered Columbias, Natural Coloreds, Cheviots, and Babydoll Southdowns. I’ve been involved in the sheep industry for fifty plus years. My flock began with two Columbia bottle babies. Cheviots and Natural Coloreds were added when our daughters began 4-H projects over twenty years ago. Babydolls were added when the grandchildren arrived. RULES GOVERNING THE 2022 NATIONAL COLUMBIA SHOW & SALE 1. By consigning to the National Columbia Sheep Show and Sale (NSS), consignors agree to abide by all rules set forth by the Columbia Sheep Breeders Association (CSBA.) The sale committee has the right to interpret all rules. 2. All consignors shall be 2022 paid Senior members of the Columbia Sheep Breeders Association at the time of entry. Senior dues are $50.00 and are payable to the CSBA at the time of entry. Junior members may show in the Junior Show and in the Open show. If a Junior member chooses to consign and sell in the NSS, he/she shall pay Senior membership dues of $50.00 by time of entry. 3. Entries must be bred and owned by the consignor. Junior members may consign an animal which was purchased in dam. 4. Only registered, high quality sheep will be accepted for entry in the NSS. All entries shall be registered with the Columbia Sheep Breeders Association. Registration certificates shall be completed prior to the NSS. Consignors will submit registration certificates at the time of check-in before consignments show. a. The same rules apply for Natural Colored Columbia entries. NC must be noted on the entry form. 5. Entries are made online at www.columbiasheep.org. Go to the National Show & Sale tab. a. Entries may, also, be mailed, faxed, or emailed to the CSBA office. b. Entries received on or before April 15, 2022, will be printed in the Speaking of Columbias Sale Catalog. c. Consignments may be made after April 15 until entries close (at the NSS) at 9 pm, June 7, 2022. These entries will be added to the online sale catalog. d. Entries shall be typed when entries are not made online. 6. Entry for rams is $30.00 per head. Entry for ewes is $25.00 per head. 7. Consignment ratio a. Open Show consignors shall consign in a 1-to-1 ratio when a ram is con signed. When one ram is consigned then one ewe, or more, shall be consigned. When two rams are consigned then two, or more, ewes shall be consigned, and so on. b. Open Show consignors may consign any number of ewes without consigning a ram. c. Production Show consignors have no ratio or limits on production ram or production ewe entries. 8. Show fees will be administered by the CSBA at the time of sale. a. Ten percent (10%) of the gross sale receipts, per sale, is collected by the CSBA. b. An additional one percent (1%) is collected on behalf of the host committee. c. The commission fees and transfer fees will be deducted from the consignor’s sale proceeds. 9. Open Show yearling rams and ram lambs are accepted for entry. a. All rams are shown and sold as single entries. b. Consignors are urged to select rams that conform to the high standards of the breed. c. Yearling rams shall be born on or after September 1, 2020. Production sheep shall be sheared within the current year. 1) The entire body shall be sheared including the head, poll, and legs. 2) No fitting is permitted on any part of a production sheep consigned to the NSS. e. Production ram and ewe weigh-in and data collection 1) Production sheep will be weighed, and vet checked at the same time as the open show sheep. 22

Consignor name, address, phone number, and email will be listed with consignments. c. Lot descriptions are limited to 50 words per entry. Typed lot descriptions are necessary to avoid errors. Use the on-line submission form or provide hard copy, typed lot descriptions. d. “Information Sale Day” will not be accepted or printed as a catalog entry information. e. A “Certified Ram” will be noted in a consignment pedigree. 13. The entry fee will not be refunded for an animal rejected by the veterinarian, sale committee, or judge. 14. All open, production, and junior sheep entries must be in place by Tuesday, June 7, 7 pm, MDT, at the Archer Event Center, Archer (Cheyenne), Wyoming. 15. All registration and health certificates shall be completed and checked in with the sale committee from 7 to 9 pm, Tuesday, June 7, 2022. Entries close at 9 pm, June 7, 2022. No sheep will be allowed to show or sell unless registration and health papers are checked and approved. No substitutions are allowed after entries close. 16. Yearling rams will be weighed and be evaluated by the show veterinarian beginning at 8 am, Wednesday, June 9. Scrotal size will be measured. Weight per day of age will be calculated. The veterinarian will make a qualified evaluation for general health, structural soundness including feet and legs, eyes and eyelids, and mouth. 17. Ram lambs will be weighed, and vet checked beginning at 8 am, Wednesday, June 8. Weight per day of age will be calculated and posted by the NSS managers by 6 pm, Wednesday. 18. The show Veterinarian will examine all remaining entries following the ram weigh-in. All consigned sheep will be examined by the veterinarian for general health, structural soundness including feet and legs, eyes and eyelids, and mouth. 19. Any questionable animals found by the veterinarian or judge will be discussed privately with the sales committee and/or sifting committee. A sifting committee may be used at the discretion of the host committee and/or Board of Directors to evaluate sheep which

A determination will be made if the sheep shall be shown and/or offered for purchase in the National Sale. 20. Consignors will be responsible for paint branding their own consignments prior to the show. Paint branding equipment and paint will be provided by the NSS committee. 21. Any evidence of tampering, to cover a disqualification, will eliminate an animal from the sale. 22. All sheep on the grounds are held at the consignor’s risk until sold. Ownership changes when the auctioneer says, “sold.” Sheep are held at the purchaser’s risk from that time forward. The Columbia Sheep Breeders Association assumes no responsibility or liability, whatsoever, for sheep on the grounds, or prior to or after the sale. The CSBA assumes no liability due to fire, floods, thefts, wind, lockouts, accidents, or any other causes. 23. Each consignor will be allowed one reserved bid to the auctioneer prior to the sale of the sheep. Any sheep purchased by reserve bid will be listed as “passed.” A 10% commission and 1% host committee assessment will be collected on all sheep “passed” at the reserve bid. 24. Registration certificates will be transferred to buyers when payment clears. Should the buyer need transfer papers immediately the buyer shall pay cash or pay with credit card plus a 4% credit card fee. 25. Sale checks will be issued within 30 days after the sale. Transfer papers to buyers will be issued when the appropriate money transaction has occurred between the buyer and the CSBA. 26. Should a dispute occur, a $25.00 inquiry or complaint may be given in writing to the CSBA Board of Directors. If the complainant in the inquiry is found correct, the complainant’s money will be refunded. If not found correct, the Association will retain the fee. 27. In the case of disputes not settled, an arbitration committee, to include the executive committee and a representative for the buyer and seller, will hold a conference call to determine a binding agreement between the parties in dispute. 28. There will be no “by bidding.” The Board of Directors will review transfers of the National Show and Sale to verify that there was no by bidding. Board action will be taken if infractions are found to be appropriate and as defined by the CSBA By-Laws. 29. Consignors will make entries on-line. The online entry form is at www.columbiasheep.org. a. Lot description shall be typed using the on-line form, or submitted as a typed, hard copy entry form. b. Lot descriptions may not exceed 50 words. c. On-line fees may be completed using PayPal. d. Hard copy entries and fees shall be mailed to CSBA, P.O. 772, Lakefield, MN 56150, and must be received on April 15, 2022, to be printed in the Speaking of Columbias sale catalog. A $5 processing fee applies to entries mailed to the CSBA. 30. The Board of Directors has the right to bar any consignor, who violates any rules and/ or procedures of the National Columbia Sheep Show and Sale. The violator will be barred for a period of two years from consigning to the NSS. 31. The Futurity Program is administered by the CSBA. 24

NSS HEALTH REQUIREMENTS
1. All sheep must be accompanied by an individual health certificates or duplicate copies of the original certificate, certified by a veterinarian that such sheep and their flock of origin were inspected within 30 days of the show/sale and free of any contagious disease. Your veterinarian should review state requirements where the National Show and Sale is held. State requirements change often. Flock ear tag numbers and scrapie tag numbers must be listed on the health certificate. 2. All rams, 6 months of age and older, must test negative for Brucella Ovis with 30 days of sale or must originate from a negative status B. Ovis flock. All sheep must be free of foot rot, blue tongue, and any other contagious diseases. This information must appear on the certificate of veterinary inspection or health certificate. 3. All animals must have an official scrapie identification ear tag attached. 4. Each animal must be listed individually on the health certificate with scrapie state premise identification number and individual scrapie tag number. 5. Consignors are encouraged to have Codon DNA test information available, but not required. 6. Sheep are not tested for OPP. 7. Consignors shall provide one copy of the health certificate for each sheep consigned.

Every ram and ewe sold will be guaranteed as a breeder if properly handled. a) It shall be the responsibility of the buyer to return the non-breeder to the seller in acceptable breeding condition. b) The seller, after fair trial and the animal is found to be a non-breeder, shall have the privilege of replacing the ram or ewe with one of equal value, to the satisfaction of the buyer, or refunding the purchase price. c) This guarantee shall not apply the first year for any sheep that are shown after the date of the sale. d) Ewe lambs are exempt from the breeding guarantee the first year. 2. Notification of non-breeder rams must be made to the seller prior to January 1st following the sale. 3. Notification of non-breeder ewes must be made to the seller prior to June 1st of the following year. 4. Any lamb that drops its teeth prior to 11 months in age as determined by their registration paper shall be replaced with a lamb of equal value to the satisfaction of the buyer and seller, or the buyer refunds the purchase price. 5. The certificate shall include the statement: "All animals in this shipment are free from Foot Rot and Ringworm (Club Lamb Fungus) and originate from a flock/herd that has not had Scrapie in the past five years." Any sheep brought into the Archer Event Center will require a health certificate with this statement. Former Columbia Breeder to evaluate fleeces at National Wool Show Dave Julius from Box Elder, South Dakota will judge the fleeces at this year’s National Wool Show. Dave should not be a stranger to CSBA members as he was a successful breeder and member for many years. Currently, he and his wife Carla are raising Natural Colored sheep and Rambouillets with emphasis on big bodied sheep with natural thickness that carry a uniform finer fleece. Dave exhibits at the Midwest Stud Ram Sale in Sedalia, the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, as well as the National Rambouillet Show. We are honored that Dave has agreed to judge our Wool Show. 52

2022 National Columbia Wool Show Rules Event Center at Archer, WY Chair – David Brown 701-840-7598 or genevahillsfarm@gmail.com The show will be held on Wednesday June 8th at 1 pm MST Entry fee - $5 per fleece paid by the time of entry. Deadline for wool show entries will be Wednesday June 8th at 9 am MST. Pre-registration is not necessary, but fees and Senior membership dues must be paid by time of entry. Pre-entry is highly encouraged by entering online. Judge – Dave Julius, Box Elder, South Dakota 1. The National Columbia Wool Show is open to all current paid Senior members of the CSBA. 2. Animal must be registered with the CSBA and in the ownership name of a current paid CSBA member. 3. Entries are open to Ram and Ewe as well as Natural Colored fleeces. 4. Natural Colored Class will not be split unless there are more than 10 entries of a specific division (ewe or ram.) 5. Fleeces must be shorn in the last 12 months prior to the show and should be one year’s growth or less. 6. A Champion and Reserve Champion Fleece will be selected from the ewe and ram divisions. 7. An Overall and Reserve Overall Fleece will be named from the top four fleeces. 8. A Champion and Reserve Champion Colored Columbia Fleece will be selected. 9. The CSBA has agreed to purchase the Overall Champion Fleece for $150 if exhibitor agrees. The fleece will be used for promotional and marketing purposes. 10. Fleeces may be entered in the online Fleece Sale, but not a requirement.

The Promotion Committee is hosting the Fleece Sale immediately after the Wool Show. The Fleece Sale will be held using Facebook Live bidding. This is optional for Wool Show participants. CSBA Fleece sale Guidelines • The CSBA National fleece sale is to be held in conjunction with the annual CSBA National Show & Sale. • The purpose of the fleece sale is to get high quality Columbia wool into the hands of fiber artists and hand spinners and increase Columbia wool viability and visibility in crafting markets. Requirements: 1. Fleece sale consignors must be current members of the CSBA. 2. Entries may be submitted by 1) contacting the sale chair prior to the NSS; 2) during or before the conclusion of NSS check-in; or 3) by using the online NSS entry form. 3. Fleeces must be sheared from registered Columbia sheep within 12 months of the sale date. 4. Each fleece must be entered in the wool show. 5. Both white and colored fleeces are acceptable and must be exhibited in a clear plastic bag. 6. Fleeces entered in the sale will be sifted for quality assurance to be offered to a hand crafter customer base. a) The fleece sale coordinator reserves the right to skirt, re-bag, remove inferior portions of fleece, and/or reweigh the fleece to be offered in the sale. b) The consignor shall respect the accepted parameters of a fleece sale. c) A fleece may be dismissed from the sale. i. Disputes, regarding cull decisions, shall be submitted, in writing by the consignor, to the chair of the fleece sale within one hour upon the conclusion of the evaluation of all fleeces entered in fleece sale. ii. A written or personal reply will be provided to the maker of the dispute if requested. d) Specifics: i. Staple must be 3 inches or more in length. ii. Average micron must be between 22.05μ and 30.99μ iii. Must be strong, without weak or tender areas. iv. No excessive dirt, kemp, guard hair, evidence of lice, scurf, second cuts, foreign matter, and/or vegetable matter (VM). v. Expected clean fleece yield must exceed 55% vi. Appropriate fleece style for the purpose of a hand crafter fleece sale. 54

7. If skirtings are included for weight in the wool show, the skirtings will be removed, and the fleece will be reweighed prior to offering the fleece for the fleece sale. a) The consignor decides if skirtings, from the wool show, will be disposed by the fleece sale committee or if the consignor will pick up the skirtings at the NSS. If neither are determined, skirtings disposed of. 8. An informational card will be included in the fleece when offered for sale. The card will include: a) Fleece ID/Name b) Staple length c) Weight d) Est. Yield e) Est. Micron f) Fleece description comments g) Consignor information 9. Fleeces entered in the sale will be offered for bid online for 24 hours in a CSBA hosted Facebook event. Communication with bidders and successful buyers, regarding a bid or purchase, will be handled by the Fleece sale Committee. 10. Minimum starting bid will be $50. a) The entrant may set their own starting bid for their own fleeces. 11. The CSBA will handle collection of fleece sale money, pay the consignor, and collect an 11% commission from the consignor, the same as NSS sheep sales. a) 10% of the commission will go to the CSBA b) 1% will go towards National Show & Sale activities. 12. The CSBA will ship sold fleeces to successful buyers with buyers responsible for postage and related costs. 13. The CSBA is acting as a third party. Responsibility for fleece satisfaction will be handled between the consignor and buyer with the CSBA providing contact information for both parties. 14. All consignors will make all decisions described in these guidelines at the time of check-in at the NSS. (See NSS check-in date and time. Location to be announced as per host facility.)

Justin Benz to judge Production Show, Natural Colored Show, Futurity Comeback Show, and Open Show
J
ustin Benz lives in Wamego, Kansas. He grew up in west central North Dakota showing Rambouillet sheep and market lambs as well as pigs and steers. Justin graduated from North Dakota State University with a BS degree in Animal Science and Kansas State University with an MS in Swine Nutrition.
Justin currently works for the Kansas Department of Agriculture Meat and Poultry Inspection Program where he serves as the Northeast Region Supervisor.
Justin is also partner in his family’s Rambouillet operation. Benz Rambouillets currently runs approximately 100 registered ewes and markets stud rams, range rams, and replacement and show ewes nationally.
In his spare time, Justin enjoys going to livestock and sporting events and spending time with his nephew and nieces.
Bryce McKenzie to Judge the Junior Show
B
ryce McKenzie is from Buffalo, Wyoming. Bryce and his wife, Sarah, operate BAM Sheep Co. Their small operation consists of club lamb sheep and a small flock of Columbias.
Bryce grew up raising and showing Columbia and Hampshire sheep through 4-H, FFA, and National breed shows. Following high school, he attended Northwest College in Powell on a livestock judging scholarship. Bryce went on to the University of Wyoming (UW) where he earned a BA in Communication. While at UW, he was part of the Collegiate Wool Growers and coached the Collegiate Wool Judging team under Dr. Whit Stewart. This was the first team after 17 years to compete for UW and they were crowned the 2019 National Western Stock Show Champion Collegiate Wool Judging Team.
Upon graduation, Bryce returned to Buffalo, Wyoming, and worked at Mountain Meadow Wool Mill, specializing in raw wool intake, custom processing, and the initial phases of the mill process. He now works as the 4-H/Youth Development Educator for the U of WY Extension in Johnson County. He enjoys working with youth and judging regional shows, such as Central States Fair and Western Junior Nationals. Bryce is very appreciative of the relationships that he has formed from his involvement in judging and exhibiting sheep and thoroughly enjoys advocating for the sheep industry.

Summer is right around the corner and here’s a fantastic lamb recipe developed exclusively for the CSBA through our partnership with Dan Kohler, Senior Culinary Producer for Hallmark Channel’s Home & Family. Pair it with potatoes and your favorite veggies for a summer delight your family & friends will be talking about for years to come. Roasted Boneless Leg of Lamb Recipe by Dan Kohler - Yield: 6-8 servings Ingredients ● 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil ● 3 medium cloves garlic, minced (about 1 tablespoon) ● 1/2 medium red onion, minced (about 1/3 cup) ● 3 tablespoons minced kalamata olives ● 2 tablespoons tomato paste ● 2 tablespoons minced fresh oregano
● 1 tablespoon toasted ground fennel seed ● 3/4 - 1 1/4 tablespoons kosher salt (use less or more depending on the size of your lamb leg) ● 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes ● 1/2 teaspoon black pepper ● 1 whole butterflied boneless leg of lamb (5-7 pounds)
1. In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, garlic, red onion, olives, tomato paste, oregano, fennel, salt, red pepper flakes, and black pepper. Set aside while you prepare the lamb. 2. Remove any netting and unroll the lamb leg as best you can. Probe with your fingers to find pockets of solid fat and other pockets of connective tissue. Using a sharp knife, cut out both the internal fat and connective tissue. Leave any fat on the outside intact. 3. Rub most of the mixture over the inside of the butterflied lamb leg. Press and massage it into the meat. 4. Roll the leg up tightly and tie with butcher’s twine at approximately 1-inch intervals. Rub remaining filling-mixture over the outside of the lamb. 5. Cook right away or let lamb rest uncovered in the refrigerator for up to 6 hours. 6. When ready to cook, heat oven to 275 ̊F. Place lamb on a wire rack inside a sheet tray. Put the lamb in the oven and cook until an instant read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the roll reads 125°F to 130°F (52°C - 54°C) for medium-rare, or 130°F to 135°F for medium (54°C - 57°C). Begin checking at the 2-hour mark, and continue to check every 30-minutes thereafter. Depending on the size of the leg it could take 2 ½ to 3 ½ hours. Remove from oven and let rest for 40-60 minutes 7. While the lamb is resting, increase the oven temperature to 500 ̊F. Return the lamb to the oven and cook at high heat until the outside is deeply browned and crisped, about 15 minutes. 8. Remove the lamb from the oven again and let it rest for 5-10 minutes before cutting off the twine and slicing meat to serve. 60

Ryan & Lindsey
R
yan and Lindsey Hendricks have raised Columbias in Leonardville, Kansas, since 2015 when they married. Lindsey (Reister) grew up on her family operation that raised Columbias, Corriedales, and Lincolns in Washington state. Ryan grew up raising Columbias, Natural Coloreds, and Rambouillets in Indiana. Ryan is a former member of the CSBA Board of Directors. Ryan and Lindsey raise functional sheep that milk, wean twins, and can survive in harsh elements. They currently raise fifty brood ewes and keep 10-30 replacement ewe lambs each year. Their primary customers are seedstock producers and commercial producers, in addition to limited butcher lamb sales. Ryan and Lindsey round out their flock with Lincoln and Natural Colored sheep.
Daughter, Hattie, was born in 2017. She is the fourth generation to raise sheep. Hattie is eager to help at lambing by checking lambs and ewes, bedding pens, and petting the occasional cat or five. She has her own small flock of Columbias, Lincolns, and Natural Coloreds. Hattie loves riding quarter horses—just like mom. (Lindsey is an accomplished, award-winning regional and national barrel racer.) Ryan and Lindsey are happy to share their knowledge with other sheep producers, especially with those who have less experience or are getting started. They are generous with their time and knowledge.
Future goals include expanding Columbia numbers to one hundred ewes and continuing to show at the NSS when time permits. The Hendricks family will be in Cheyenne with an exceptional consignment. They look forward to seeing you at the NSS. 62

starter flock 2022 update
W
e’re having another successful year in 2022 with nine applicants applying for a Columbia Starter Flock. The popularity of Columbias is growing across the country. Applicants from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, South Dakota, North Carolina, and Florida were interested in being a part of the Columbia Association. Seven candidates researched Columbia sheep and learned of the Starter Flock program on our website. We are extremely fortunate to have a very user-friendly website with a wealth of information about the breed that also allows the applicants to apply online. If you aren’t familiar with the Starter Flock Program, winners receive three registered Columbia females donated by CSBA members and a $500 stipend to purchase a ram at the National Show and Sale. The following year they receive $250 to purchase sheep out of the National Show and Sale. After five years, we ask the winners to contribute females back to the program. The committee members did a heck of a job interviewing the candidates and narrowing the pool. Please thank the committee members for their work when you see them (Steve Hampson, Rolland Aschim, Janelle Bredahl, and Sara Hildebrandt). They have done an outstanding job since the inception of the program in 2019. Without their support, this program would not be as successful as it is. Another huge contributing factor to the success of this program is those that have donated sheep, as this is the key to the growth and success of the program. This year we would like to send our appreciation and thank you to Roath Columbias – Kyle and Paige Roath of Utah; Triple C Columbias – Roberta and Ashlie Chase of Colorado; Adam and Mary (Uphoff) McCorkle of Wyoming; and Geneva Hills Farm of North Dakota. This year we are again awarding two starter flocks. The Board of Directors has approved funds for the two flocks. We are truly appreciative of the Board, Charlie and all the CSBA members who believe in this program - thank you for getting sheep into the hands of people with a passion for Columbia sheep! Last year’s winners, Hailey Rose and Eric Henkel and his family will be present in Cheyenne. Be sure to introduce yourself and ask them about their first year with Columbias. 2022 winners will be announced at the annual meeting in Cheyenne.

CSBA PROUD OF 2021 STARTER FLOCK RECIPIENTS
W
e had a breakout year for the Starter Flock Program in 2021! Nine applicants submitted their applications. Starter Flock Director David Brown and the CSBA Board of Directors responded with the presentation of two starter flocks at the 2021 National Sale in Sidney, Ohio. One year later, let us see how things are going for the 2021 recipients.
Hailey Rose of Santa Rosa, Ca Hailey Rose of Santa Rosa, California is one of the aspiring flock owners. Her starter flock had a long journey from Sidney, Ohio, to their new home. They became comfortable in their new pasture and barn quickly. She enjoyed getting to know each sheep. Hailey admits she spends too much time in the barn hand feeding and petting. She says they are very demanding about a few more scratches. This summer Hailey will be at the Sonoma and Boonville County Fairs to promote and show Columbia sheep. A friend and Hailey run a summer camp. A few sheep will go along to attend camp too. Hailey shares, “It’s a lot of fun to see the kids interact with my flock. Most kids have never been around farm animals. It’s fun to see their reactions!” Hailey’s advice for the 2022 Starter Flock winners is this, “Ask questions. Any question you can think of. No question is a dumb question. Find out answers from experienced breeders to further your education.” Hailey advises the new flock owners to use difficult times as learning experiences. Her support team is David Brown (ND) and Samuel Cooper (CA). Hailey expresses her gratitude to the CSBA for her starter flock. She can’t wait to grow her flock and grow the experiences for her children, herself, and extended family!

Henkel Family of brownwood, tx Central Texas Columbias, the Henkel Family—Carter, Conrad, Crockett, and Penelope are the second aspiring Columbia owners from Brownwood, Texas. After a long trip to their new home, their starter flock adjusted quickly to their new surroundings as well. The Henkel kids loved getting to know the Columbia breed. Most kids in the area have market lambs and participate in market shows. Therefore, the Henkel kids have many opportunities to introduce Columbia sheep to friends and explain how their project is a yearround endeavor. Carter, Conrad, Crockett, and Penelope are home schooled. Raising sheep is a part of their education. Surprising to all the kids is the lesson that Columbias are easy to manage. The family has enjoyed the entire process. From breeding to birthing to watching the care a ewe gives her lamb(s) have been highlights of their exciting journey. The family will tell you, learning when to do what is the hard part, but they enjoy learning. Their goal is to grow a superior flock and be able to share their genetics with others as time goes on. The kids also purchased a “ready-made family” from Triple C Columbias (CO). Chase’s ewe and surprise lamb (born at the Sidney NSS) went to Texas as a package deal. The Henkels credit Roberta and Ashlie Chase as great resources, and Sara Hildebrandt as a truly kind and supportive mentor who checks in on them often.

The Certified Columbia Ram program was initiated in 2017 to encourage breed improvement in economically important, heritable traits of gain, fleece quality, and carcass quality. Official, university-connected ram tests provide consistency and objectivity for identification of rams that excel in those traits. Rams that meet or exceed the following trait thresholds earn a Certified Ram designation: • Participation in university-based, official ram test • Ribeye/Loineye Area > 1.3 square inches/CWT

Two Columbia Rams Achieve Certified Status Based on Official Ram Test Data

ongratulations to Faith Gasvoda, of Big Sandy, Montana, and Kathy and Russell Bell, of Gillette, Wyoming, whose rams achieved Certified Columbia Ram status based on their performance at official, university-based ram tests.
Faith’s ram earned certification through the 2021–22 North Dakota - Hettinger Ram Test. Gasvoda 121 “CR 009”* (Registration #: Y17772), recently christened Jumanji, is a single, QR, March-born ram, sired by Gibbs 7-1, a ram that Faith purchased in 2017, and out of Timber Coulee 1925, a ewe with Hanna breeding, that Faith purchased in 2020. Jumanji had an ADG of .8 #/day on test, a 26.51 micron fleece, a 4.83 inch adjusted staple length, top scores of 1.0 for face and belly wool, and a ribeye area of 1.4 sq. inches/100# of body weight. Of note: Faith is a first time consignor to ram testing. Look for Jumanji in the Production Ram class at NSS.
Bell’s ram earned certification through the 2021–22 Wyoming Ram Test. Kathy and Russell are long-time consignors to ram testing and have had rams achieve Certified status in three out of four years of the CSBA program. This year’s certified Ram, Bell B-183 – “CR 010”* (Registration #: Y18522), is a QR April-born twin that ranked 13th out of 90 rams on the WY Certified Index (a calculated scale based on ADG (25%), Feed Efficiency (25%) Clean Fleece Weight (30%) and Loin Eye Area/100# (20%). A full twin brother to B-183 ranked 38th on the same index. Both were sired by Bell B-173, a ram with Lawson breeding, and out of Bell B-775, a half-sister to the Bell ewe donated in the first year of CSBA’s Starter Flock program. B-183 had an ADG of .96 #/day, a 24.44 micron fleece, a 5.41 inch adjusted staple length, top scores of 1 for face and belly wool, and a ribeye area of 2.36 square inches/100# of body weight. Spotlight: Faith Gasvoda
F
aith Gasvoda got her start with sheep as a 2017 recipient of a starter flock of Columbia ewes donated by members of MT CSBA. Since that time, she has become a role model and mentor for junior members of the Montana Association and is now embracing opportunities for involvement at the national level. Faith will graduate in May with an Associate’s Degree in Agriculture Technology from MT State University – Northern. To pay for school, she works at the Northern Ag Research Center – Havre, maintaining 20 hours per week during school and pulling 12 hour night-calving shifts during spring break. When asked if she likes school, Faith didn’t hesitate, “Not really. I’d rather be outside with my animals.” After graduation, Faith plans to return to her family’s cow/calf and dryland grain operation where she runs the baler during haying season and works with her grandmother to prepare and deliver meals during grain harvest. Years ago, the Gasvoda operation included sheep; Faith plans to bring them back and envisions running 60 registered Columbia ewes. Congratulations Faith!

Workshop: Wool - Tools of Evaluation NSS 2022 - Cheyenne, WY
I
f you’d like to sharpen your wool evaluation skills, plan to attend and participate in the workshop being organized for NSS 2022. The workshop will have three components:
• A structured session on Wednesday, June 8 (2:00 PM or after NSS Wool Show judging) presented by Dr. Whit Stewart, University of WY Extension Sheep Specialist, assisted by Courtney Newman, University of WY graduate student. Dr. Stewart will provide fleeces that illustrate dos and don’ts of selection, with a focus on uniformity of length and grade throughout the fleece and how such uniformity relates to processing and heritability estimates. As described by Dr. Stewart, “The workshop will be an educational session, with handouts, that is structured but, also, very conversational.” • An open-ended opportunity to examine and score Columbia fleeces using a basic scorecard that incorporates Dr. Whit Stewart, University of breed standards. For the convenience of attendees, the Wyoming Sheep Specialist fleeces will be available over the course of NSS for evaluation. An “answer key” will be provided so that attendees can compare their own evaluations with wool lab measurements and experts’ comments on each fleece. • An open-ended display available throughout NSS of fleeces that contain undesirable wool, such as medullated fibers, belly wool where it ought not be and, perhaps, hair. The problem fibers will be identified and labeled. The workshop is brought to you by the Commercial Production Committee (CPC) in response to your feedback on our Fall 2021 survey. Members of the CPC thank all CSBA members who provided input. We look forward to seeing you at our NSS workshop sessions.

Junior Columbia Association National Show and Events Rules and Guidelines 1. Exhibitors shall be current paid members of the National Junior Columbia Sheep Breeders Association. The Columbia Sheep Breeders Association website, www.columbiasheep.org, outlines the membership levels and fees for Junior members. 2. Entry fees are $5 per entry (including the pairs class) and are to be postmarked by May 15. Late entries will be accepted, but entry fees will be doubled. Payment must accompany entries. a. Entries can be made on-line at www.columbia sheep.org. 3. A maximum of two entries per class and one entry per pair class may be entered. In split classes, exhibitors are limited to two total entries for that particular class, i.e. two yearling ewes. 4. To be shown in the pair classes, both sheep must have been shown as individuals in their respective classes. Sibling Junior members may not combine animals for pairs classes. 5. Animals must be registered, and registration certificates must be presented at check-in. 6. The CSBA states “A CSBA Junior member may exhibit sheep owned by a CSBA Senior member (as determined by the current ownership listed on the registration paper of the Columbia sheep), if the junior meets the definition of immediate family. The CSBA defines immediate family as a child, grandchild, great grandchild, sister, brother (which includes step, adopted, and foster) or first-generation niece or nephew. The Junior member may exhibit said sheep as an immediate family member in CSBA sponsored events including the National Columbia Show and Sale and the All-American Junior Show.” 7. All sheep must have a flock tag in their ear that matches the private flock number officially recorded on the registration certificate. 8. Substitutions (within class and between classes) may be made at check-in, prior to the determination of class breaks. 9. Classes will be divided if numbers justify doing so. Breaks will be based on age in lamb classes. 10. Exhibitors are allowed to have other Junior members assist them in showing; however, the registered owner must be present throughout the entire duration of the class. Failure to comply with this rule results in the loss of the placing and premium money for the animal. 11. If there are not enough Jr. members available to assist when showing in pairs classes, adults will be allowed to help.

12. Exhibitors should be professionally dressed for the show ring. Sweatpants, shorts, jeans with holes, etc. are not acceptable. 13. Exhibitors may not wear any clothing or other articles (i.e, hats, monogrammed shirts) in the show ring that advertise a sheep flock, membership name, or related enterprise, to prevent name recognition. 14. Exhibitors have five minutes to enter the show ring following the conclusion of the previous class. Judging will begin when this time expires. Entries not in the show ring will be left to the judge’s discretion. 15. All animals will stay in the ring until the judge completes verbal reasons.
GENERAL INFORMATION
1. Junior sheep shall be on the grounds by 7:00 PM. Check-in will be held Tuesday, June 7, from 7 to 9 PM MDT. 2. Pens will be assigned. Please note on your entry form if you want to be penned with traveling partners. Junior sheep are not always penned by sale sheep unless they are also entered in the sale. This varies by show location, but we always do our best to accommodate you. 3. Exhibitors are advised to bring their own fans, extension cords, fitting equipment, feeding and pen maintenance equipment. 4. Class winners and second place animals will compete for Champion and Reserve Ram and Ewe titles. 5. Exhibitors’ show animals must be treated humanely with all four feet on the ground during show, and water in the pen always. 6. The judge will be Bryce McKenzie. 7. The Junior Association will issue all premium checks. There is a minimum $5 premium per placing, so all exhibitors will receive a premium check. 8. 1st $30; 2nd $25; 3rd $20; 4th $17; 5th $15; 6th $12; 7th $10; 8th on -$5
HEALTH REGULATIONS FOR SHEEP
1. All sheep must be accompanied by a standard interstate health certificate issued by a licensed, accredited veterinarian within 30 days of the arrival at the show. The health certificate must show identification as to breed, sex, number, etc. 2. Exhibitors are responsible for meeting health requirements of the state where the show is held. Information may be found in the Speaking of Columbias or online. Please contact your vet well before the show to ask about any special requirements such as a B-ovis test. 3. All sheep must have a USDA scrapie tag with an individual animal number. 4. The health certificate may be collected at check-in and retained until after the show, particularly when the show is held in a western state. It is helpful to have a copy that does not need to be returned. 5. Any sheep that is not accompanied by a properly filled out and signed health certificate or does not comply with any of the above regulations (e.g., scrapie tags) may not be admitted to the show. 6. All sheep must be free of fungus and disease (including sore mouth). Any active disease will disqualify the infected animal and may jeopardize the other animals traveling with the infected animal.

SHOWMANSHIP
1. No cash premium is given. 2. To participate in showmanship, show people must be paid members of the Junior Association. Peewee showmen do not need to be paid members unless they are also entered in the Junior sheep show. 3. Showmen will be divided into Senior, Intermediate, Junior, and Peewee classes based on their age the day of the show. Peewee showman will be 7 years and under. Age breaks for the other classes are flexible and will be determined based on the ages of the participants to create classes with even numbers. 4. Team Showmanship: Those who want to participate will be divided into two age groups. One name from each group will be drawn at random to create a team. This gives exhibitors the opportunity to collaborate and perform with another Junior member. This class is for experience, fun, and pride - no awards are given for team showmanship. 5. Show persons may show their own sheep that were entered in the National Columbia Junior Show or animals entered in the show by another junior member. You do not need to be an exhibitor in the Junior Show to take part in showmanship, only a paid member of the Jr. Association. 6. Judging will be based on: a) Control and presentation of the animal, manner of handling the animal, overall impression. b) Ability to answer questions, if asked by the judge c) The judge will place Junior, Intermediate, and Senior showmanship classes.
FITTING CONTEST
1. A team of Junior members will be organized to fit a Columbia sheep as a team. 2. A sheep will be provided for each team. The sheep will be prepared at a similar level for each team. 3. Fitting contest will be Wednesday June 8 at 10 AM. Prizes will be $75 first, $50 2nd, $25 third. 74

NATIONAL COLUMBIA AMBASSADOR SPONSORED BY THE CSBA
a) The Columbia Ambassador program is a unique way to help promote and be highly involved with Columbia sheep, the people who raise them and hone useful leadership skills for the future. b) During the one-year term, the Ambassador will represent the CSBA at sheep and lamb related activities and to interact with the people and institutions that impact the sheep industry. c) A maximum budget of $1500 is provided by the Columbia Sheep Breeders Association to defray costs for the Ambassador and any adult providing transportation and assistance to travel to the North American Livestock show in Louisville, KY. Ambassador reimbursement shall be made with the CSBA Executive Secretary. Receipts and mileage verification must accompany reimbursement requests. d) An adult coordinator, representing the CSBA Youth Committee, will assist with scheduling, appearances, and duties. e) The Ambassador is eligible from the ranks of the National Columbia Sheep Breeders Association. This may include someone who is actively involved in the production and registration of purebred Columbia sheep or be the child of a parent, grandparent, or guardian who is actively involved in the production and registration of purebred Columbia sheep. f) The candidate shall be 14 years of age by the date of Cortney Copeland the National Columbia Show and Sale annual meet2021-22 National Columbia Ambassador ing but shall not have reached 22 years of age prior to that time. The 2022 qualification date is June 9, 2022. g) Young men and women are eligible. h) The Ambassador will attend events such as (but not limited to) county, state, and national shows, consumer-related lamb/wool events, parades, industry forums, and educational events to actively promote Columbia sheep. The Ambassador is highly encouraged to attend the All-American Columbia Show in Louisville, Kentucky. i) Common duties may include handing out ribbons and awards, hand out promotional information, communicate with the public and be prepared to make public comments to promote the breed and CSBA on behalf of the CSBA. j) When attending events, the Ambassador shall represent the CSBA by wearing appropriate attire associated with the Ambassadorship and event.
