CDC President’s Message Rachael Gately The CDC, much like our breed, has always been committed to quality and performance. For over two decades, the maintenance of this reputation has been attributable in large part to one celebrated person, Debra Hopkins. Debbie has been central to the day-to-day functioning of the CDC in generating our registration papers, organizing our events, and answering our questions. Behind the scenes, she has been absolutely integral to the functioning of our board on the highest levels. This season, we celebrate our last National show led by Debbie. It is with bittersweet feelings and much gratitude that we wish Debbie the best in her retirement after 25 years of service in the Continental Dorset Club. The Board has worked hard and spent many hours interviewing numerous extremely well-qualified candidates to fill the enormous shoes being left behind. We unanimously agreed that Michelle Torrance is the lady for the job. Her understanding of the Dorset breed and database function combined with her charismatic personality and glowing recommendations resonated as we thought about who could lead us into the future in a manner similar to our great former Executive Secretaries. I had the opportunity to spend some time with Michelle and Debbie last week, and I am confident that we are in excellent hands. It is with excitement that we look forward to this year’s NAILE. I personally am looking forward to the opportunity to showcase our breed on the national stage while smoothly transitioning our leadership. We are going to stay progressive and honor the consistent quality of the Continental Dorset Club! See you all in Louisville shortly; travel safely!

Commercial Dorset Connection In Search of the Perfect Brood Ewe By Melanie Barkley, PSU Extension Educator One of the challenges of raising sheep is developing a flock with a perfect brood ewe. In fact, we would all like to have a whole flock of those perfect females. To select rams to mate with these ewes, we must first define just what that perfect female should look like for our individual farm. This can vary greatly from one farm to another because each farm may have different goals and they certainly have different resources available for sheep production. Here are a few things to think about as we look for that perfect brood ewe. Body Condition: A ewe should be able to maintain an average body condition score by eating a forage-based diet. In other words, she should be able to live on pasture and hay or haylage and maintain an average body condition score throughout the year. Forage is one of the most economical feed sources for most sheep flocks across the country. We expect that a ewe should lose some body condition while nursing her lambs. But she should regain that lost weight to reach an average body condition score well before the next breeding season. Her body condition is very important from breeding through the last third of her pregnancy. She should maintain an average body condition score through her pregnancy to avoice issues with pregnancy toxemia. Overly fat sheep may not be able to eat enough to meet the growing nutritional needs of multiple lambs. There might not enough room inside her to accommodate her rumen, two or three lambs and all that fat! Very thin ewes may also develop pregnancy toxemia. Producers with thin ewes should evaluate why ewes are thin. Are ewes thin due poor nutrition? Or, is the cause more related to genetics? Structural Correctness: If you expect a ewe to walk through a pasture to harvest her own meals, she should be structurally sound. The correctness of her feet and legs will allow her to walk freely and easily around the fields and should help her to remain sound over the many years of her lifetime. Sheep with weak pasterns, very straight hind legs, or malformed hooves have an increased likelihood to develop lameness issues. Muscling: For sheep, muscling is important for ewes to pass on

to their offspring. Ewes should not be overly muscled or round in their muscle design because this could lead to lambing difficulties. On the other hand, she should have enough muscling so that her offspring will produce adequately muscled carcasses. Mothering Ability: I have yet to meet a sheep producer who enjoys bottle-feeding lambs. It is the ewe’s job to produce adequate amounts of milk for her lambs and take care of her lambs. She needs to lick the lambs off when they are born, and she needs to stand still to allow the lambs to nurse numerous times throughout the day. Some ewes will even duck their hind quarters to allow the lambs easier access to teats. She should also keep track of her lambs during her travels throughout the pasture or in the barn if lambing inside. In addition, she both sides of her udder must work properly and her udder should appear level with a strong suspensory ligament as viewed from the rear. Low hanging teats can be difficult for lambs to find and delays their first meal after birth. This can be a critical issue during cold weather when nursing soon after birth can help to prevent lamb deaths. Performance: Sheep producers should expect a certain level of performance from their ewes. For those interested most in growth characteristics, ewes should be able to produce enough milk to meet weaning weight goals. Keep in mind that this will vary based on the age of the ewe, birth type (single, twin or triplet), rearing type, and sex of the lamb. Adjust weaning weights to account for these differences so that you can better evaluate ewes. For producers more interested in wool production, ewes should have a uniform fleece from their shoulder to their rear leg. Ewes should also have very little britch wool, the wool on the lower part of their rear leg. Also, belly wool should not extend up the sides of the ewe. Other Characteristics: Sheep producers may have other characteristics that are important to their operation. Temperament is important to many producers because the “bad actors” can be difficult and sometimes dangerous to handle. They get everyone else in the flock stirred up and can even hurt very young lambs. Breed characteristics should be important to purebred breeders as lambs need to conform to breed standards. Take a moment to consider what is important to your operation. Set goals and then select rams that should help you meet

those goals and improve the overall genetics in the flock. Evaluate lambs based on those goals and only keep replacement ewe lambs that best meet those goals. Announcements WELCOME NEW CDC EXECUTIVE SECRETARY/TREASURER MICHELLE TORRANCE The CDC is pleased to announce the hiring of Michelle Torrance as our new Executive Secretary & Treasurer. Members can meet her in Louisville this year as she will be there assisting with the shows. The office will officially move to Illinois starting December 4. We welcome her aboard! Read more about Michelle below. Hello Dorset Breeders! I am Michelle Torrance, and I am excited to have been chosen as the new Executive Secretary/Treasurer of the Continental Dorset Club! I know that I have big shoes to fill in taking over this job, but I will be working closely with Debra over the next few months and will do my best to make the transition as smooth as possible. I have been married to my husband Corey for 29 years and we live in Good Hope, a small town in West Central Illinois. We have two sons, Trevor and Owen, and are adding a daughterin-law, Megan, later this year. I enjoy spending time with my family, fishing and boating as much as I can, and I love to travel and see new places and cultures. Corey & I have been raising sheep since moving back to Illinois in 1996 and we traded a pinball machine for 4 bred ewes. Our flock has numbered over 100 ewes at times, which included Dorsets, Suffolks and Hampshires. Over the past few years, we have slowly downsized, and our only breed is now Dorsets. I graduated from Arkansas State University in 1991 with a degree in Marketing. Soon after, I took a job in the telephone industry, which was the beginning of a career that lasted 30 years; the last 12 of which were spent as the Office Manager for our local telephone cooperative. In 2021, I decided to leave my office job and started substitute teaching for our local school district. Several years ago, I took over the bookwork for our county’s 4-H Premium Livestock Auction and for the past 2 years I have handled the administration of our county General & Livestock Junior Show. I am looking forward to meeting and working with the Board, Junior Board and Dorset Breeders, both young and ‘aged’. There will be changes since the office will be moving from Rhode Island to Illinois, but we will do our best to make sure all information is available as soon as possible. I appreciate the Board putting their trust in me to continue where Debra leaves off and I am excited to be a part of the future of the Continental Dorset Club!

2023 NAILE SCHEDULE AND EXHIBITOR INFORMATION The Dorsets will once again be showcased at the upcoming National Dorset Shows during the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, KY. This will be the 125th CDC Anniversary National Dorset Shows at NAILE and the CDC sponsored awards will feature the special celebratory logo. Following is a schedule of specific Dorset events: • Junior Breeding Sheep Showmanship: Friday., Nov 10th, 9:00 AM, Terry Burks judging. • Junior Market Lamb Showmanship: Friday, Nov. 10th, 1 hour after Commercial Ewe Show, John Romero & Sierra Meyers judging. • Leadline Classes: Friday, Nov. 10th, 5:00 PM • National Junior Dorset Shows: Saturday, Nov. 11th, 9:00 AM, Horned Dorsets, & Dorset Advantage, with Polled Dorset at the end of the day, Ring A, Jason Heeg judging. • Junior Show Dorset Market Lamb Show: Saturday, Nov. 11th 8:00 AM, Jason Simpson judging. • National Junior Dorset Association Annual Meeting & Pizza Party: Saturday, Nov. 11th, 7:30 PM, Meeting Room C105. Futurity results announced. • National Open Dorset Shows: Wednesday Nov. 15th, 8:00 AM, Polleds first followed by Horneds. Chris Meyer will be judging the Fitted Polled Dorsets & Horned Dorsets, and Mike Stitzlein will be judging the Slick Shorn Polled Dorsets. Junior Show Breeding Sheep Showmanship will be Friday at 9:00 AM. You need to pre-enter the showmanship show. The cost is $10.00, and it needs to be entered before you arrive at the show, no post entries allowed. The entry fees will be put into jackpot premiums and awards. The classes will be divided by age and all breeds will be shown together. Please make sure you review the special rules in the Dorset section of the premium book for both the open and junior shows as they will be adhered to. The Polled Dorset shows have separate Fitted and Slick Shorn Shows, for both the Junior and Open Shows. Ram & Ewe Champions from each division will be allowed into the Supreme Champion drives, as long minimum number requirements are met. The Junior Show also has a Dorset Advantage show and is in the junior show only. The CDC slick shearing policy will be adhered to as it appears in the premium book. “Slick Shorn presented sheep are to carry a uniform length of wool growth that was shorn within 7 days prior to show, with the ONLY exception being on the poll, front legs below the knees and rear legs below the hocks.” This wording got updated on some shows and others not BUT this is the official policy. There is to be no additional belly or flank wool left on the animals. The CDC educational banner will be on display during
the show for your reference and we will also be having an educator/inspector on hand during the shows to get folks familiar with the policy. Your animals will need to meet the CDC slick shearing policy to enter the show ring.

Saturday evening, after the Junior Dorset Shows, the National Junior Dorset Association Annual Meeting & Pizza Party get together for the Juniors will be at 6:30 PM in Room C105. This is a great event as the futurity and scholarship awards are presented, first year Dorset showmen show mementos are handed out and the NDJA annual meeting and elections are held. It is our one opportunity to gather all the Dorset juniors and their families together to recognize our junior Dorset breeders and get to know each other so please make plans to attend, never mind the free pizza and drinks.
HALL OF FAME NOMINATIONS NEEDED FOR 2024 & BEYOND
For open show exhibitors: In addition to sending in your entries and entry fees to the NAILE when entering the show, please don’t forget to send in the matching $15.00 per individual entry in the Open Polled and Horned Dorset shows directly to the CDC Office. This enables the CDC to provide matching funds to guarantee full premium scale. These matching funds need to be sent to the CDC office ASAP if you haven’t done so yet. Please note that junior show sheep do not have to send in matching funds unless they are staying on to be shown in the open shows. For those of you unable to attend the shows in person, all shows can be viewed live streamed by going to the North American International Livestock Show website. Looking forward to seeing everyone in Louisville. It will be great to see everyone once again and to see another great set of Dorsets at the National Dorset Shows!

The CDC Dorset Hall of Fame has become a very popular program, and it is a great way to recognize major contributors to the breed over the years. The CDC needs some new nominations for the upcoming year and beyond. It really isn’t a very complicated procedure, and the nomination form is available on the CDC website: continentaldorsetclub.com. Inductees get recognized each year at the Annual CDC Membership meeting. For your reference here is a list of who has received the award since the program’s inception: J.B. Henderson, J.R. 2024 NATIONAL DORSET SALE SITES & ANNUAL MEETING The 2024 National Dorset Sale for Polled & Horned Breeding Sheep will be held at the Ohio Dorset Sale in Greenville, OH at the Darke County Fairgrounds. The dates for the sale show and sale are March 15-16, 2024. Classes will be offered for fitted and slick shorn sheep, Polled and Horned. The Annual CDC Membership Meeting and Hall of Fame induction will also be held in conjunction with the Ohio Dorset Sale. The annual membership meeting will take place on Friday afternoon following. It will be soon after the completion of the sale show and prior to the 6th Annual Dave Harmann Cornhole Tournament. This sale is being managed by Select Livestock Services. The sale show is carried live on You Tube and the online sale bidding is carried by Breeders World. INTRODUCING BEN WILFONG - NEW EASTERN CDC REGIONAL DIRECTOR I would like to introduce myself as the new director representing the Eastern Region of the Continental Dorset Club Board of Directors. My name is Ben Wilfong. I currently reside in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, in a small town of Warm Springs, with Kayala and our 4 children, Jaryd, Lane, Colton, and Kinsley. Our family currently owns Wilfong Dorset’s where we run approximately 300 registered Dorset ewes. Our flock is comprised of what we refer to as all 3 types of Dorset Sheep: Frame, Clubby, and Production. Each flock is bred separately
and managed accordingly. A vision and goal was to be a stop for any Dorset breeder regardless of their operation needs or production and breeding goals. We have been recognized by the Continental Dorset Club as having the largest number of registrations for the year for our organization. We exhibit and show across the country from March through November, in addition to being a NSIP member. Our children are a very large part of our operation and are active in 4-H and show right alongside us, and most times above us. We get to be the grunts at every jackpot show we can enter. We strive to ensure that the Dorset Breed is well represented and a vital piece to the American sheep industry. As your Eastern Region representative I will be sure to maintain the positive and everlasting image of our breed. It is imperative that we each as breeders regardless of production goals, whether it be the commercial, market, or show ring, we maintain what our breed is so known for, out of season breeding with excellent mothering and milking abilities. As your director I will pledge to make sure our board keeps the open mindset and communication with each and every one of our members through a very transparent process to ensure accountability, integrity, and trust. I will be that guy that you will see at every National Event to help where that helping hand is needed. We have a great organization full of some of the best breeders and people the sheep industry has to offer. There is no reason for us to settle for any less than the best. In 1995, 27 years ago at the ripe age of 12 years old I purchased my first Polled Dorset ewe and ram at what was then the Eastern Stud Ram Sale in Staunton, Virginia. I was fortunate to be in the generation where “Buster” Wilson, Bill & Margret Wade, Rod Crome, Ron Guenther, Dave Harmann, Dick Kuzemchak, and many more, where those breeders would take you under their wing to help and teach you the vast knowledge only they each had. Traveling to shows like the Ohio Dorset Sale, Eastern Stud Ram Sale, Keystone Stud Ram Sale, Midwest Stud Ram Sale, Big E, Louisville seeing those faces around every corner in the Dorset aisles. Now as you look around the barns, we are that generation. More importantly now than I believe in any other time, is it so important to take a step back and make sure we are doing everything we can to retain our juniors and keep the interest among them and the next generation as alive and vibrant as we can. After all, without them filling the footsteps of some of us, where will our breed go? Having said that, a top priority, if afforded the opportunity is to do just that, let’s get more breed classification divisions for our Dorsets here on the East Coast. If it can be done everywhere else, why aren’t we making sure we do the same here. Don’t let the other breeds leave us in the dust! Lost Shepherds RALPH AMYX Sanger, Texas
Ralph Dennis Amyx, 82, of Sanger, Texas, peacefully passed away on Monday, June 12, 2023, at his home, surrounded by his family. The oldest of three sons to Fred B. and Marvel (Balthrop) Amyx, Ralph was born in Decatur, Texas, on November 20, 1940. Ralph graduated from Sanger High School and began attending North Texas State University (now called the University of North Texas), where he earned his Masters’s Degree. On July 30, 1960, in the Lois Community, Ralph married the love of his life, Lela Mae Springer. They made their home in Sanger, where they raised their two children, Curtis and Lynelle. This year will mark 63 years of marriage. He and Lela were members of the First Baptist Church in Sanger, where she worked as the church secretary for forty years, and Ralph served as a Deacon. In 1963, Ralph began his teaching and coaching career with Sanger ISD. In basketball, he led the Sanger Indians to several Bi-District and District Championships. The signs still hang in the gymnasium on Seventh Street to this day. After receiving his master’s degree in physical education, he moved to the elementary school where he taught P. E. and Science. He was an excellent teacher, from academic books or life lessons. If you were coached or taught by Ralph, then you were given a nickname. If you walked up to him today, he would still call you by that nickname. He loved and truly cared for his students. He retired after 30 years with Sanger ISD. When he retired in 1993, he had taught two generations of students. Growing up on a dairy farm, Ralph returned to farming full-time after retirement. Amyx Farms raised some cattle, as well as sheep and goats. Eventually, he concentrated solely on sheep and goats. Ralph was instrumental throughout the State of Texas in helping many of the youth in FFA and 4-H with their show lambs. Ralph served on the Sanger ISD Board of Trustees for nine years. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Bolivar Masonic Lodge #418, having earned his 60-year Service Award with the Bolivar Lodge and the Grand Lodge of Texas in 2022.

Ralph was a family man and loved the Lord. He lived it every day by example for others to see and follow. Ralph and Lela followed their children and the grandchildren in all their involvement. In May, he was able to travel to graduation for his granddaughter, Ashton, with her Doctoral of Physical Therapy. He had the best outlook on life. He always enjoyed a good story, whether being the teller or the listener. He loved teasing, cutting up, and laughing with everyone he knew. Ralph is survived by his wife, Lela of Sanger, Texas; one daughter, Lynelle Stroope and her husband, David of Sanger, Texas; one son, Curtis Amyx and his wife, Brenda of Sanger, Texas; sister-in-law, Elaine Amyx of Denton, Texas; one brother, Dickie Amyx and his wife, Melinda of Sanger, Texas; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Liz Springer of Sanger. Additionally, three grandchildren, Weston Stroope of Pleasanton, Texas, Ashton Stroope and her fiancée, Steven Stratso of Fort Worth, Texas, and Dalinda Damm and husband, Phil of Savery, Wyoming; and two great-grandchildren, Morgan Damm, and Reid Damm, also survive him. He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Joe Amos Amyx, and one grandson, Billy Craig Dennis.
ROGER HUNTRODS Collins, Iowa
Roger Calvin Huntrods, 96, of Collins, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2023, from heart and lung complications at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa. Roger was born February 23, 1927 in Collins, the seventh child of Donald S. Huntrods and Vera E. (Eatwell) Huntrods. He graduated from Collins High School and was married to Netha M. Westerly on April 3, 1950, in Indianola, Iowa. They were married for 72 years. Roger was a farmer his whole life and a sheep shearer for many years. He raised purebred Dorset and Suffolk sheep as well as beef cattle. The Continental Dorset Club inducted him into its Hall of Fame for his contributions to the breed. He also served on the Collins Community School Board for several years. Roger was a U.S. Army veteran and served with the 3186th Signal Service Battalion in Okinawa, Japan.
Lost Shepherds Roger was a member of Nevada Baptist Church in Nevada, Iowa. He enjoyed hunting; reading, especially westerns and WWII books; and genealogy. He also enjoyed walking his farmland, checking the sheep or looking for arrowheads, morels and wildflowers. Roger is survived by his wife, Netha Huntrods; children, Diane Huntrods of Des Moines, Iowa, Dick (Barb) Huntrods of Camby, Indiana, Bob (LeAnne) Huntrods of Collins and Mark (Cyndy) Huntrods of Collins; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers, Bill and Donald; and his six sisters, Donna, Margaret, Myrl, Lucile, Iris and Mary. Visitation will be from 2 – 4 pm, Sunday, October 22, 2023 at Rasmusson – Ryan Funeral Home (1418 Fawcett Pkwy), Nevada. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 23, 2023, at Nevada Baptist Church (210 W 3rd St), officiated by Trey Perrott (grandson in law). Burial will be at Collins Evergreen Cemetery at 2 p.m. Monday, October 23, 2023. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Nevada Baptist Church.
RANDY PIRTLE Copan, Oklahoma
Randall “Randy” Lee Pirtle, 61, of Copan, a longtime area agricultural educator, passed away on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, in Tulsa. Randy was born on June 21, 1962, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Garry Lee Pirtle and Patricia Ann (Gaskill) Waller. Randy attended Mountain View High School, graduating in 1980. During his childhood, he was baptized at the Methodist Church, also in Mountain View, Oklahoma. Randy graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science from Oklahoma State University and later earned his Master’s Degree in Agriculture Education there, as well.
months after married on July 31, 1982. To this union, two beautiful daughters were born, Aspen and Cassie. Randy doted on his family and was active in their lives, serving as livestock judging coach for both of his daughters. He and Susan and their girls have raised club lambs for 35 years. They enjoyed family cookouts, and Randy especially loved watching his children and grandchildren play and show sheep. He was a Dallas Cowboys fan and a die-hard OSU Cowboys fan. After finishing college, Randy was employed with OSU Cooperative Extension in Washington County for 32 years and then took the position as the Northeast District Director with OSU until his retirement in 2019. During his distinguished career, Randy received numerous accolades and awards including: 2023 Oklahoma Youth Expo Honoree for the Sirloin Club of Oklahoma, Distinguished Educator for Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension, Oklahoma Honorary FFA Degree, and Oklahoma State University Graduate of Distinction Award. He was a Master Gardener Educator for more than 30 years and was a board member of the American Hampshire Sheep Association. Randy served as superintendent for both the Tulsa State Fair and the Oklahoma Youth Expo for more than 20 years. He was a board member for the Washington County Farm Bureau, Copan School Board of Education and the Washington County Junior Livestock Show Committee for more than 20 years. Needless to say, Randy was very involved in agriculture and youth in agriculture. Randy enjoyed telling stories and ended many conversations with “every day is a gift”. Randy will be truly missed by his family and his community. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Lela “Susan” Pirtle; two daughters, Aspen Dunkle and husband Brad, and Cassie Green and husband Cory; his mother, Patti Waller and husband J.C.; his father, Garry Pirtle and wife Jeannette; a brother, Tommy Pirtle and wife Dona; four grandchildren, Maverick, Savannah, Tucker, and Bristol; and numerous other family and friends. The family has requested that people wear orange and black to Randy’s memorial service in honor of his love and dedication for Oklahoma State University. Go Pokes! He met the love of his life, Susan Thornbrough, on the Ferris Wheel during the Mountain View Fair in 1979. Susan was too young to date and Randy was heading to college. After Randy graduated from OSU, the couple reconnected and a few short

Youth News 2023 WISCONSIN ALL AMERICAN JUNIOR SHOW
The 2023 All American Junior Show was held at the Alliant Energy Center, Madison, WI from June 28-July 2, 2023. This was the show’s second trip to Madison. We knew it was going to be a big one with more head entered that the last time we were in Madison six years ago, so plans were put in place to rent more facility to accommodate the show. There were 719 exhibitors attending from 31 states showing 2,943 head of sheep. The show had exhibitors attending from coast to coast as well as across America’s heartland. It was a large undertaking on the part of the local Wisconsin hosts headed up by Nancy Burton, Deb Petzel and Brenda Lobdell. Thank you to them for their organizational efforts. The Polled, Horned and Dorset Advantage divisions showed on three different days by two different judges. The breed had excellent participation and had several exhibitors showing for their first time in an All American. The Dorset show had 1246 head of Polled Dorsets shown, 62 head of Horned Dorsets and 119 head of Dorset Advantage. Congratulations to Owen Torrance, IL; Hainsley Hatfield, OH; Madelyn Syme, CT; and Reid Coleman, OH for being named the top guns for the Fitted Polled, Slick Shorn Polled, Horned and Dorset Advantage shows respectively. All the show results and photos can be found later in this newsletter. The National Junior Dorset Association had their social meet & greet on Thursday evening. It was a walking taco event with cornhole boards and music for attendees’ pleasure. It was very well attended and will be the plan for the social time moving forward. Thank-you to the National Junior Officers that organized and hosted the event! The NJDA handed out first time Dorset Showman mementos to the Dorset exhibitors at this year’s All American as well as commemorative CDC 125th Anniversary cozies at all.

2023 NATIONAL JUNIOR DORSET ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING IN LOUISVILLE The National Junior Dorset Breeders Association will hold its annual meeting in Louisville on Saturday night, November 11, 2023 at 7:30 PM in the Kentucky Exposition Center South Wing, meeting room C105. The meeting will feature an election of next year’s directors, presentation of the 2023 scholarship awards, presentation of the regional & final 2022 futurity awards from the show, awarding of the First Time Dorset Showman brushes and a pizza party for all the Junior Dorset members and their families. Make plans now to attend the National Dorset Junior Association Annual Meeting and pizza party. Come and meet all your fellow Dorset exhibitors!

Youth News CDC & NDJA DORSET EWE YOUTH PURCHASE GRANT PROGRAM The National Junior Dorset Association and the CDC introduced a grant program for youth to use towards the purchase of a Dorset ewe and it has been very successful for the past nine years and last year 89 applications were received. The associations awarded five $500 grants again last year due to the large number of youth applicants wanting to buy Dorset sheep. The 2023 winners of the Dorset Youth Ewe Purchase Grants were Junior Division: Chloe Knepper, IA (bought a Polled ewe lamb from Jahner Lambs, IA) and Jayci White, KY (bought a Dorset Advantage Ewe Lamb from Paige Teeters, IN); Intermediate Division: Zoey Jacob, NC (bought a Polled ewe lamb from Jahner Lambs, IA) and Elizabeth Johnson, AR (bought a Polled ewe lamb from Silver Smith Genetics, KS) and Senior Division: Denali Bosco, OR (bought a Horned ewe lamb from Silver Creek Lambscapes, OR). A very simple one-page application form is available on the CDC website right on the home page or you may contact the CDC office to forward you a copy. If you have applied previously but haven’t yet been selected, please do so again. This is a great way to obtain funding towards the purchase of a Dorset breeding female. The grants can be used to make a private on-farm sale, an online sale purchase or in-person consignment sale buy. Please send an application in today or get to an interested youth today! 2023 DORSET FUTURITY UPDATE The 2023 Dorset Futurity Program has been actively participated in over the summer. The new addition of the Bred & Owned Divisions brought excitement into the futurity program for the established junior breeders breeding their own replacement females. It gave them a place in the program to also earn premiums to help supplement the cost of their breeding programs. The Dorset breeders supported the program this spring by nominating 182 polled ewe lambs, 38 Dorset advantage ewe lambs, and 30 horned Dorset ewe lambs. The junior breeders re-nominated 9 yearling ewes,4 bred & owned horned ewe lambs, 7 bred & owned polled fitted ewe lambs and 17 bred & owned slick shorn polled ewe lambs. The participation in the bred & owned division was so supportive the CDC board split the division into three separate divisions. So please, keep sending in those point records forms on shows you are attending this fall. The deadline to get those point record forms into the CDC office will be Monday, November 6th. There are juniors competing in all divisions of the futurity program and the final Futurity Awards will be presented in person this year at the NJDA Annual Meeting held in Louisville on Saturday evening. We will be recognizing all the regional and national winners at that time.
NATIONAL JR DORSET ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Fall is here which means breeding decisions are being made, lambs are hitting the ground and many of us are gearing up for the North American International Livestock Exposition (N.A.I.L.E). Whether you’re in the midst of breeding plans, welcoming new additions to your flock or preparing for N.A.I.L.E., know that the CDC and NJDA are here to provide support every step of the way. Speaking of support, a sincere thank you goes out to all the junior members and their families who joined us this summer at the NJDA-sponsored events. The Dorset Social, held at the All-American Junior Show, had a great turnout and we hope y’all enjoyed it too. We’re excited to invite you to our Annual Meeting, scheduled to take place at N.A.I.L.E after the show on November 11th.
