The Balkan Tour

Day 1. Home - Tirana Assemble at the airport for your flight to Tirana, the capital of Albania.

Day 2. Tirana - Berat Upon arrival, join a sightseeing tour of the city and visit the biggest attractions, like the Skanderbeg Square, Skanderbeg Statue, Et’hem Bey Mosque, Clock Tower. Continue to Berat, one of the oldest city and the pride of Albania architecture. Drop by the Berat Castle, which involves a steep walk up a cobbled path, but those who make it to the top will be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding area. Visit Onufri Museum and National Historical Museum. Walk through the old quarters of the town and have a look at the King’s Mosque, Halveti Tekke, Gorica bridge and Mangalem house.

Day 3. Berat - Ohrid Cross the border into Macedonia as you make your way to the UNESCO-recognized Lake Ohrid. Visit Samuil’s Fortress and walk along its historic 4th century walls. See the Ancient Theatre of Ohrid. Make a quick photo stop at the Church of Saint Sophia.

Day 4. Ohrid - Skopje Make your way to Skopje - the capital of Macedonia. Admire the sweeping vistas of the city from the top of Skopje Fortress Kale and walk down from the fortress to see the Ottoman-era Mustafa Pasha Mosque. Stroll through the old Bazaar and over the Stone Bridge into the New Town. See the Grand fountain of Alexander the Great and visit Memorial House of Mother Teresa.

Day 5. Skopje Enjoy a free day at your leisure. You may wish to join a full day tour to Kosovo with visit of the capital Pristina and Prizren.

Day 6. Skopje - Rila - Sofia This morning you will travel to the Rila Mountains where you will visit the famous Rila Monastery. The beautiful orthodox monastery was built in the 14th century and houses valuable paintings, thousands of manuscripts, old printed books and masterworks of wood carvings. Head towards Sofia the capital of Bulgaria.

Day 7. Sofia - Veliko Tarnovo Embark on a city tour of the Bulgarian capital city. In the heart of Sofia, visit the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and The Boyana Church. After lunch, drive to Veliko Tarnovo. Visit the Tsarevets Fortress.

Day 8. Veliko Tarnovo - Predeal Cross the border into Romania and drive to the heart of the Carpathian Mountain for spectacular mountain scenery and visit the Peles Castle build in 1883. Peles Castle is a masterpiece of German Renaissance architecture.

Day 9. Predeal - Bran - Sibiu - Predeal Head towards Bran and visit Bran Castle, which dates back to 1377. It is best known as Dracula’s Castle from Bram Stoker’s famous novel. Continue to the medieval city of Brasov. Your sightseeing tour in Brasov includes the Council Square, Saint Nicholas Church, Brasov Fortress, Franciscan Monastery and Black Church.

Day 10. Predeal - Bucharest Today you will join a panoramic tour of Bucharest, which includes sights of the University Square, Romana Square, Victory Square, Arch of Triumph, House of the Free Press and Romanian Athenaeum. Next, head to the Constitution Square and see the Palace of the Parliament. Join us for a festive dinner.

Day 11. Bucharest - Homeland Transfer to the airport in the evening for your flight back home.

Transylvania, Maramures & Danube Delta

Day 1. Homeland - Bucharest Arrive in Bucharest and meet the group.

Day 2. Bucharest - Sinaia - Predeal This morning our tour leader will take us to explore Romania’s capital. We also make a visit to the fascinating Village Museum. After the city tour we drive to Sinaia, to visit the Pelisor Palace. This evening you have the opportunity to have a delicious meal and enjoy a traditional dance and music show.

Day 3. Predeal - Bran - Brasov - Bistrita Today we start our day with a short drive to the Bran Castle. We drive to the city of Brasov. We then continue our drive for approximately two and a half hours to the medieval town on hill top, Sighisoara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where we spend about an hour. You can climb up to the church and get a good view back over the town below. Our final drive of the day to Bistrita and we will arrive at our hotel in the evening.

Day 4. Bistrita - Barsana - Sapanta - Sighetu Marmatiei Leaving Bistrita this morning, we drive pass high forested hills and fertile valleys dotted with orchards and meadows. We visit the Monastery of Barsana The beautiful tall wooden church is 57 metres high and is a great example of the clever construction techniques used on these traditional wooden structures. .We reach the village of Sapanta and here we go to see the Merry Cemetery. This afternoon we continue our drive to Sighetu Marmatiei.

Day 5. Sighetu Marmatiei - Iza Valley - Bistrita Today we enter such a region, as we take the railway from Viseu de Sus up the Vaser Valley to Novat.

Day 6. Vatra Dornei - Moldovita - Gura Humorului Leaving Vatra Dornei we drive east across the Carpathians to Moldavia and the northern region of Bucovina. We stop at Moldovita. Among the most interesting scenes pictured here are the Seige of Constantinople and the Last Judgement. After spending about an hour at the monastery we drive to our accommodation in Gura Humorului. Day 7. Gura Humorului - Sucevita - Agapia - Piatra Neamt We include a visit to Sucevita Monastery, the largest of the monasteries in the Bucovina region. We then hike through the countryside along the forestry roads in a valley to the north of Sucevita.. At Agapia you will meet up with the rest of the group to visit the monastery. We spend about one hour visiting the Agapia Monastery Museum. Following our visit we meet our bus and drive to Piatra Neamt where we spend the night.

Day 8. Piatra Neamt - Tulcea This morning we drive for about four hours to the ancient port of Tulcea. Here we board our pontoon We will have dinner on board our pontoon this evening.

Day 9. The Danube Delta The Danube Delta is a premier wildlife sanctuary and paradise for birdwatchers and photographers alike. We spend the day aboard the pontoon and smaller boats to give us the opportunity of viewing some of the many species which inhabit the delta. Much of this can be enjoyed from the sun deck of our pontoon. We will also take time to visit a village in the Delta. We will have all our meals onboard our pontoon today.

Day 10. Tulcea - Bucharest We spend the morning cruising back to Tulcea, and after our last lunch on board we will drive back to Bucharest.

Day 11. Bucharest - Homeland Today our trip ends at Bucharest after breakfast. If your flight is departing later today or you are extending your stay you to join a tour of the Palace of Parliament.

From Bulgaria to Moldova

Day 1. Homeland - Sofia Welcome to a unique experience! Assemble for our flight to Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria

Day 2. Sofia Transfer to the city where we begin our city tour with a local guide. Stroll through Sofia’s elegant center to see landmarks such as Alexander Nevski Cathedral the Parliament and the former Royal Palace, Rotunda St George and the President Palace.

Day 3. Sofia - Rila - Plovdiv Head south to the magnificent Rila Monastery, a landmark of Bulgaria and an UNESCO Heritage Site. Continue to Plovdiv, one of the most charming and magical cities of Bulgaria.

Day 4. Plovdiv - Veliko Tarnov Plovdiv city tour - Highlights of Plovdiv includes the Antique Theater, Roman Stadium and an old town preserving the Bulgarian Renaissance architecture. Enjoy a spectacular panorama of the Rhodope Mountains. Continue to the old capital, Veliko Tarnovo.

Day 5. Veliko Tarnovo - Bucharest Veliko Tarnovo city tour: See the spectacular Tzarevetz Fortress, seat of the Bulgarian Kings from the medieval times. Continue to the capital of, Bucharest. We invite you to enjoy a traditional dance and music show during the festive dinner at the reastaurant.

Day 6. Bucharest Bucharest city tour: Visit the Parliament Palace, the world’s second largest administrative building after the. In front of the palace is Revolution Square. Drive down Calea Victory, see the Arch of Triumph, the Romanian Athenaeum and lots more.

Day 7. Bucharest - Sinaia - Bran - Brasov Travel to Sinaia. Visit the Peles Castle, an impressive royal residence built by Carol I, Romania’s first king. Travel north to Bran Castle, also known as Dracula’s Castle built in the 14th century. After the visit, drive to Brasov. Brasov city tour: Visit the Black Church, the largest gothic church in Romania.

Proceed to the birthplace of Vlad Tepes, Sighisoara. Travel towards the Eastern Carpathians to the spectacular Bicaz Gorge. Enjoy a short orientation tour of Piatra Neamt, one of Moldavia’ oldest cities surrounded by mountains.

Day 9. Piatra Neamt - Suceava Perhaps the most famous and stunning of the painted monasteries is Voronet founded in 1487 to celebrate a victory over the Turks. Widely known as ‘Sistine Chapel of the East’ due to its interior and exterior wall paintings. Continue to Suceava, the once capital of Moldova. Suceava city tour.

Day 10. Suceava - Iasi Visit the Sucevita monastery featuring high walls and heavily buttressed defensive towers around it, giving it the appearance of a fortress. Enjoy an egg painting demonstration before driving to Iasi, one of Romania’s oldest cities. Between the Palace of Culture and Union Square are churches and princely palaces on both sides of the city’s main boulevard.

Day 11. Iasi - Chisinau Today, we cross the border into Moldova. Discover Moldova’s winemaking heritage in Cricova, home to the world’s largest underground wine cellars at the depth of 50- 80 meters. Continue to Orheiul Vechi, an interesting archaeological site housing the ruins of two cities. Visit the Orthodox Cave Monastery Travel to Chisinau, Moldova’s capital. Chisinau city tour: See the Arc de Triomphe and the 1841 Holy Gates at the city centre.

Day 12. Chisinau - Homeland Bid farewell to Moldova as we transfer to the airport for our flight back home.
