Hard Work Pays Off! A note from Dean Lindquist’s desk… When you’ve invested a lot of hours and hard work into something, it’s always good to see it pay off. I’m happy to report that this seems to be the case within the nursing programs at MCCC! A lot of hours have been spent working on curriculum and planning program options over the last several years to ensure that quality higher education and nursing education at MCCC remain synonymous terms. Below is a synopsis of achievements: The PN to RN option was fully approved by the Michigan Board of Nursing and the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing during the spring of 2016. New students were welcomed into the inaugural cohort in May and have transitioned into the traditional program this fall. We’re very excited to support their goal of academic progression toward an associates of applied science in nursing degree and will be monitoring progress closely. Initiation of the program option was a big undertaking and many thanks go out to the faculty and staff that worked diligently in getting this option off and running. I’ll be monitoring student progress closely and hope to be able to report more good things by way of student achievement in the future. The results are in….and awesome! NCLEX pass rates for both the RN and PN programs are WAY above national averages. The 2015 RN NCLEX pass rate for students (on the first attempt) was over 94.59%, over 12% higher than the national average for the same time period. So far this year, I’m excited to report that the class graduating in December of 2015 had a 100% pass rate and the overall pass rate for 2016 thus far is 96.3%, once again surpassing the national average of 83%. The PN program is enjoying tremendous success as well! The 2015 NCLEX pass rate for PN students (on the first attempt) was over 90%, 9% higher than the national average. The class that graduated in December of 2015 had a 100% pass also, this time surpassing the national average for PN students by 17%! Two things are certain at MCCC: 1) MCCC has outstanding nursing students that work very hard and represent the college, program, and profession well within the community, and 2) MCCC has effective and dedicated faculty and staff who work diligently to ensure students receive quality education and have the skills and abilities they need to enter the work force and provide safe, quality care. I’m proud of both of them and am honored to be associated with such a reputable program providing quality education in preparing the next generation of nursing professionals.

We had representation from Northwest State Community College, Concordia University, Henry Ford Community College and Schoolcraft College. This is a very informal collaborative effort. The goal of the group includes the sharing of ideas and networking with other lab personal to improve student instruction in the lab. • All adjuncts attending clinical at any Beaumont facility will be required to complete an “initial” drug screening through Corporate Connections in Monroe. • Beaumont is preparing for Joint Commission surveys at all of their sites for Fall 2016. Students remain on the clinical units during these important survey days as they are a part of the normal day to day operation at Beaumont which is very appreciated by their academic affiliates. KUDOS!

ProMedica Health System: • ProMedica is busy with EPIC implementation over the next several months which is the new EMR system that will be utilized at all ProMedica facilities. Faculty are required to attend 12 to 16 hours of mandatory training while students gain proficiency via on-line modules. • We are also eagerly anticipating ProMedica’s use of the ACEMAPP clinical placement program for all student tracking and clinical placements in the near future. • Lastly, ProMedica Bixby Hospital will be used as a new site for the Fall 2016 Preceptorship.

What’s New for the ADN Program? It was with great pleasure and excitement that we were able to announce in April of 2016 that Monroe County Community College has been successfully chartered as the Delta Mu Chapter of the Organization for Associate Degree Nursing Alpha Delta Nu Honor Society. This is a way for Monroe County Community College to recognize excellence for students in the registered nursing program. To be considered for membership, students must have attained a 3.0 overall GPA, attainted and maintained a 3.0 GPA in all nursing courses and must demonstrate conduct on campus and in the clinical areas that reflect integrity and professionalism. Invitations for consideration were just sent out to eligible third and fourth semester students at the beginning of the semester. The inductees will be recognized at pinning and at graduation and receive an honor society pin and cords to be worn at both. Participation is optional. We strongly encourage the student to participate in the nursing honor society for the following reasons; recognition for academic excellence, potential for scholarships to continue education and it would be a quality addition to your professional portfolio. We are very excited to have this up and running for the Fall 2016 semester. We are working on our Capstone Project that will take place in two weeks at the Veterans Stand Down conference offered by the Salvation Army in Monroe.

PN Updates: Currently there are 12 students completing the PN program and anticipating their upcoming pinning ceremony on Thursday, December 8th, at 1 p.m. in the La-Z-Boy Meyer Theater. RN Pinning Ceremony is Friday, December 16th, 2016 at 6 p.m. in the La-Z-Boy Meyer Theater.
