Generous Deeds Beget Generous Deeds Our December snow lay quietly on our Abbey¹s east lawn, and the morning sun cast shadows from the trees and drifts. Beyond the trees lay the Missouri River and the four-mile glazier cut to the further bank. Peace seemed to fall in place. In the decades that have passed since the monks built this stone monastery on the river bluff in the 1920s, thousands of folks have come to admire the rising sun from this place. There were few tracks of human footsteps. The college students were at home; they run and walk this flat ground in warmer times. They were making other tracks, visiting and traveling, at home and in other places. They came back to us. One student who is planning to make the Spring Break trip to El Salvador, where students and two monks help build a house or two, asked to speak at her home parish. She asked that the parish members give financial support to this project. Tears of gratitude and almost unbelief came to the eyes of this Benedictine College student when, after the Mass that Sunday morning, one person came to her to say he was going to sell a load of grain that week and would send her a check for $5,000. She shared this story with Brother Leven Harton upon her return to campus in mid-January. This kind of generosity also breeds generosity in younger folks. This BC student will go to El Salvador, committed to doing her best because an adult has shown such support. Young people do respond generously. This story surfaced in recent weeks. A lady was in her home when two young men knocked on her door and asked if they might clean her sidewalks.
SPRING 2010 She told them she didn’t have any money to pay them for such work. They proceeded to clean her walks and then knocked on her door again. This time they told her that they had finished and that they wanted her to have the money they had received for other work they had done. They handed the lady $67.00. She told this story to her daughter, an employee at Mount St. Scholastica Monastery, and she shared thhe story with me. There are many forms of beauty. The sun upon wind-blown snow is beautiful. The snow melts, and the grass grows. Acts of charity come to an end, and they, too, cause growth as one act of charity inspires another. Your charity toward our monastic community is an experience of beauty. That so many share with us in this way is truly inspiring and sustaining. We reach out to you in ways that hopefully strengthen bonds between us and give all of us support when the winds of winter blow hard. We await and welcome the nurturing of Spring, sure to come.

we remember... Brother Robert Heiman O.S.B.
Brother Robert Heiman, a monk of St. Benedict’s Abbey, who for his entire life worked the soil and became a steward of the land, died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 14. He was 72. He professed his monastic vows July 11, 1957, and departed this life sustained by the sacraments and the prayers of his confreres. Brother Robert earned much affection and respect from his community over the years for his knowledge of agriculture and his love for the people who live close to the land. He was born to Edward and Bertha (Lierz) Heiman on Nov. 3, 1937, in Seneca, Kan., and grew up on a family farm at St. Benedict, Kan. northwest of there. He came to St. Benedict’s Abbey as a postulant in 1955 and at once began work on the Abbey farmlands. In the late 1960s he took charge of the Missouri River bottomland acreage of the Abbey, today known as Benedictine Bottoms, a Missouri River fish and wildlife reclamation project. Brother Robert also became a licensed amateur radio operator at about this time, providing an important communications link between the Abbey and its foundation in Brazil. A short time later he was assigned to missionary work at the priory in Mineiros, Brazil – Mosteiro São José. From 1971 to 1978 Brother Robert distinguished himself when he was placed in charge of much of the Priory’s farming operation. He tended the Priory’s dairy herd on a large circular pasture, keeping the grasses green through a continual cycle of tilling and reseeding. Depending on a seemingly endless well of resourcefulness, he and a loyal hired hand kept the farm’s old truck, tractor and combine going with rusty parts and elbow grease. Brother Robert picked up the language and culture on bus rides throughout the countryside seeking parts for the ancient combine. Equally resourceful with leftovers, Brother Robert often could be found reheating a supper he’d missed from working too long in the fields.

In 2008 he was able to return to Brazil, 30 years after he left, accompanying Abbot Barnabas Senecal on his annual trip to visit the community there. Brother Robert was pleased to see the growth of family settlements and the number of young Brazilians committing to the Benedictine way of life, building on his past hard work. Upon his return to Atchison in 1978, Brother Robert was appointed assistant novice master. He continued to work on Abbey farmland and in its gardens for the remainder of his life. Brother Robert is survived by his brothers Donald, Overland Park, Kan.; John, Beattie, Kan.; Regis, Topeka, Kan.; Paul, Grand Junction, Colo.; and Thomas, Wichita, Kan.; his sister, Mary Jo Hughes, Lee’s Summit, Mo.; 31 nieces and nephews; and by the monastic community of St. Benedict’s Abbey. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his three brothers, Edward, Kenneth and John. Upon hearing of Brother Robert’s passing Father Duane Roy reflected on his friendship with Robert. “Brother Robert will continue to speak to us in many moments and in many ways. Far From Restful – Retirement frees Bishop Herbert to fight the good fight

Father Duane accepts prior post in Brazil Father Duane Roy began a two-year tenure as Prior of St. Joseph’s Priory, Mineiros, Goias, Brazil, Feb. 1. Father Duane, a native of Stockton, Kan., accepted the post in December when the monks of St. Joseph’s gathered for a Visitation of their community. Father Josias da Costa had completed five years in the office. Father Duane will reside at the monastery of San Bento, the community’s house of studies in the state capitol, Goiania. Father Duane comes to the office after eight years as Vicar General of of the Prelacy of Cristalandia in the State of Tocantins, Brazil, where he served under Bishop Herbert Hermes, also a monk of St. Benedict’s Abbey, who in retirement will continue to work in social justice. Since arriving in Brazil in 1970, Father Duane served as prior and novice master from 1978 through 1985, and as business manager from 1980 to 1990. He gave lectures on sociology and psychology at state high schools in Mineiros and later served as a professor of sociology at a college in Mineiros between 1987 and 1998. During that same time, he served as pastor of St. Rita parish from 1985 to 1992 and of Holy Spirit parish from 1997 to 2001, before being tabbed to assist Bishop Herbert.
Father Duane is a 1963 graduate of St. Benedict’s College and he professed vows to St. Benedict’s Abbey in July 1961. He was ordained to the priesthood June 2, 1967, and earned a master’s degree from Emporia State University two years later. He translated the book, To Be Seed: The Memory and Witness of Bishop Matthias Schmidt, in 2001-2002. He has published several articles, in English and in Portuguese. 7

SPRING 2010 She has also served as a real spiritual mentor in bringing my own Benedictine life into conformity with what I have tried to share with the oblates. I would like to offer special thanks to the late Sister Mary Anthony Wagner and several former directors: namely, Sisters Leonette Hoesing and Ann Kessler of Sacred Heart Monastery, Yankton, S.D. Much thanks is due to Father Meinrad Brune, St. Meinrad Archabbey, Brother Benet Tvedten, Blue Cloud Abbey, Father Donald Raila, St. Vincent Archabbey, and Sister Phyllis Hunhoff and Sister Bonita Gacnik, both of Sacred Heart Monastery, to name few. Over the years a number of people have tried the oblate life and found it not for them and others have found something for which they have been searching for years. I rarely mention monastic vocations but I firmly believe that the oblate life is part of the monastic vocation for the 21st century. Life has changed in a radical way in the past 50 years and I see deeply committed family life with many of the members trying to live the oblate life as the future of Benedictine life. I am happy to have shared in this life for the past 20 years in a way beyond my dreams after entering monastic life. Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, the archbishop of Vienna, Austria, visited St. Benedict’s Abbey and Benedictine College, Jan. 31, as part of a 36-hour visit to the Kansas City area to inspect the establishment of Little Sisters of the Lamb. Father Terence Sullivan

ather Terence, spelled with one “r,” as he reminded folks now and then, served at St. Benedict’s College and later in various parishes tended by the Abbey Community. He was twice at Hiawatha and retired to the Abbey from there in 2000. Father Terence was never at a loss for an anecdote to share with confreres at ABC (The After Breakfast Club) or at the Tuesday Night Haustus, a gathering for conversation, refreshments and snacks. Incidents in his life took on a dramatic quality in the telling whether it be the time he got involved in a court trial as a result of witnessing an auto accident or telling of an incident on one of the many cruises he took while serving the ship as chaplain. He freely told about his own foibles. Father Terence, who had an abiding interest in submarines, was one of the graduates of Lillis High School in Kansas City, Mo., who joined our community. The others are Fr. Bertrand LaNoue and Fr. Maurice Haefling. Father Jude Burbach adds: Terence, his picture is on my bookcase and it prompts me to reflect on the Terence that I knew, the Sociology teacher, the Prior, the pastor, the hospital chaplain at Fort Scott where he served for a number of years.

He was a friendly person. He loved the high seas and invited me to accompany him on a week-long cruise. It was educational to see how he had it all planned out; to fly to Houston, to catch a bus to Galveston where we boarded the liner. Terence was a community man, a few years younger than I. We had meals together a few times when we were assigned to neighboring parishes. He kept a tidy household and served a tasty meal whether it was for two or more. I asked Prior James to preach at my Golden Jubilee celebration at Onaga. Terence honored me with his presence on that occasion. a Grateful Response liturgy & the life of the church
Growing up I entered the monastery at a young age, after the third year of college. This was not unusual for the time, but, given the lifelong process of maturation, I had much to learn about being an adult while living the monastic life. Much like young professionals, I would imagine, or like young married couples, the Father Daniel McCarthy monastic way informed my adult perspectives and patterns of daily living. Reflecting back on my journey, like many people, I wonder how I ever got to where I am from where I began more than a quarter century ago. Even if I could have foreseen the joys of this stage of life when I first entered the monastery, I could not have imagined the myriad steps and missteps in route. Each moment had its decisions, which in turn shaped the next. The celebration of the liturgy has nourished me in many and profound ways, so much so that I have recently come to ask how the good celebration of the liturgy nourishes our human maturation. Perhaps married couples look to the liturgy for some example of how to live their married life, and parents for raising their children. Perhaps professionals look to the liturgy to know how to conduct their business. Yet connecting these pointed moments of life’s decisions into a narrative of one’s own life-long maturation provides a valuable perspective on the way in which the liturgy nourishes us all along the way. Father James Leachman and I have been reflecting on how the liturgy, its texts and rites, suggests the ways of human maturation. We have invited others to join us in a process of shared reflection. We recently held a Parish Appreciating the Liturgy workshop at St. Joseph’s Parish, Wathena, Kan., where I pastored from 1995-99. The current pastor, Father Roderic Giller, welcomed and hosted our group in the rectory dining room. For our meeting I prepared handouts with the prayers for the upcoming feast of the Epiphany and included reflection questions for each of the four prayers. The opening prayer concludes the gathering rite of mass and often includes a statement about our identity as the body of Christ and our hope in Christ. The opening prayer for Epiphany petitions that God lead us by the light of faith to our goal of glory in heaven. Reflecting on this prayer, we asked how we perceived God to be leading us by the light of faith and how we have already caught a glimpse of the glory of heaven. Thus, the prayer helps us to reflect upon and to name God’s working in our lives. When we present the gifts of bread, wine and an offering for people in their need, we acknowledge that these gifts already represent the gift of God and the work of human labor. As we process up to the altar with the gifts, we also present ourselves to God, and with ourselves our daily lives and service to others. In return we receive the gift of Christ’s body and blood. In the communion procession we present ourselves once again. St. Augustine says that when we receive communion it is not changed into us as mere food, but we are changed into Christ. Thus, the prayer over the gifts concerns the reciprocal exchange of self-gift. Reflecting on the prayer over the gifts for Epiphany, we asked how we have received
SPRING 2010 God’s gift of self and how we are giving ourselves to God in response. This reflection helped us to consider our lives in terms of the mutual exchange of personal self-gift. The preface of the eucharistic prayer names the saving deeds of God for which we give thanks in this liturgy. The preface for Epiphany says that Christ’s glory has shone among us and that God has renewed humanity in Christ’s immortal image. We reflected upon how we have seen God’s glory among us and how we perceive Christ’s immortal image in ourselves and in one another. The prayer after communion concludes the communion procession. This prayer typically petitions that we deepen our appreciation for the gift we have received and become and that we live according to this mystery in our daily lives. In light of the prayer after communion for Epiphany, we reflected upon how we have welcomed Christ with love and how we perceive God to be leading us with divine light. Reflecting on the Sunday prayers helped us to see how God is working in our lives. The liturgy calls us to respond to the Scriptures by joining in the mutual exchange of self-gifts in the Eucharist and then to see this exchange as the pattern for our daily lives. We are humbled and gratified by the extended sacrifice many of our friends have made to push forward our capital campaign, the “Journey Forward.” This while continuing to support our annual fund. Despite difficult financial times we have turned to a few stalward benefactors to keep this effort moving forward. However, we have reached the most challenging phase of the campaign. The following pie chart shows the current progress of the capital campaign. We are within the final $1 million, but we will need the help of each of our friends to complete this important work of repairing our monastery’s roof and its replacing 885 windows. As you can see we have successfully raised the money to make the Abbey Church accessible to all who visit our church and guest house, a $2.2 million project. abbey notes Father Michael Santa is studying math factoring in his room with some assistance from Brother Simon Baker, a math and physics major. Father Michael wants to understand compound interest and needs to know factoring to gain that understanding. Brother Damian Cayetano, a member of the Benedictine Priory of Christ the King in Schuyler, Neb., who made first vows in September of 2009, is living with us in the Abbey and enrolled in Benedictine College in January to begin his study of philosophy. He did a canonical novitiate at Conception Abbey in Missouri, and a second year at the Ottilien monastery of Munsterschwarzach in Germany and at Schuyler. Brother Damian came with his parents to the United States from the Philippines when he was one year old. The family lived in Virginia Beach, Va., and knew the Benedictines who staff a large parish there. Damian did a missionary trip to Honduras with a group organized by the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal and began his vocational search for a religious community committed to mission work. This led him to the Ottilien Benedictines who work worldwide. The community in Schuyler numbers eight monks; their work is to raise awareness and funds for the Ottilien mission work, to run a retreat center, assist immigrants and engage in other ministries. Abbot Barnabas Senecal participated in the annual Abbots’ Workshop in Prince of Peace Abbey, Oceanside, CA, Feb. 5-9. Dr. Michael Downey was one of the speakers for this workshop. Author or editor of more than 20 books, as well as journal articles, essays, and book chapters that number in the dozens, his most recent publications are Altogether Gift: A Trinitarian Spirituality (2000) and The Heart of Hope (2005). A member of the editorial board of Cistercian Studies Quarterly, he works extensively with enclosed contemplative communities, and is active in retreat work. Recipient of the Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice (2005), Dr. Downey is the Cardinal’s Theologian, Archdiocese of Los Angeles. A second speaker was Derry Connolly, founder and president of John Paul the Great University in San Diego. He presented sessions on “The Work and Influence of Catholics in the Media and Commerce.” Father Matthew Habiger participated in a pro-life conference and gave talks at St. Joseph Church, Kennewick, Wash., in the Diocese of Yakima, Feb. 4-7.
SPRING 2010 Fathers Bruce Swift and Brendan Rolling, Brother Simon Baker, Novices Brother Christopher Start, Ulrich Henningsgaard and Father Justin Dean participated in the Men of Valor conference in Olathe’s College Church of the Nazarene, Jan. 30. Father Bruce was a confessor for the Men of Valor and Father Brendan was a confessor for the Women of Virtue program. This is the fifth year for the Men of Valor gathering and the first year for the Women of Virtue conference, organized by Phillip and Cathy Cosby. Speakers included Scott and Kimberly Hahn, Dr. Mark Laaser and Dana Gresh. For the opening joint conference on Friday there were 1,200 participants. On Saturday, there were 650 men and 525 women in separate assemblies. Father Louis Kirby and Abbot Barnabas Senecal participated in Vespers at Savior of the World, Feb. 2, joining religious of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas honoring Consecrated Life. The Church celebrates the World Day for Consecrated Life simultaneously with the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple. The World Day for Consecrated Life was inaugurated in 1997. Benedictine pastors and parish representatives of the Atchison Pastoral Region met to respond to an inquiry of the Archdiocesan administrators that the city of Atchison study the possibility of being a single parish, thus perhaps making another priest available for rural ministry. Their recommendations are part of the final regional plan submitted to Archbishop Naumann. The St. Joseph News Press carried photos and a story on the Abbey Art Gallery’s current show, Thirty-Three Original Works, in its Jan. 30 Saturday Diem section. It is available on-line. Father Blaine Schultz, gallery curator, and Elizabeth and Terry Zeller gathered art works from the abbey, works by our monks and by friends of the abbey. St. Benedict’s Abbey offered “Vespers and Dinner with the Monks” at the 17th Annual Support Our Seminarians evening in Kansas City, MO, Jan. 29. Two meals for six guests were purchased by two separate parties, Pat and Louise Meyers and Bob Miller. The younger monks of St. Benedict’s Abbey enjoyed the December snowstorm that descended on Atchison and much of the Midwest. Among the results 24of their play was this huge snow sculpture of the head of a Greek Athlete.
