Future voters vexed after political forum DALE BASS STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
DAVE EAGLES/KTW
Deciding whether the glass is half-empty or half-full were Grade 11 South Kamloops secondary students Alex Wood (left) and Lisa Karpuk as they listened to two candidates who showed up for yesterday’s Kamloops-South Thompson candidate forum in the school library. Nancy Bepple (NDP) and Beat Klossner (Communist) took part, while Donovan Cavers (Green) arrived within minutes of the forum ending. Todd Stone (Liberal), the minister of transportation, had ministry business and could not attend. Turn to A6 for notes on the forum.

Alex Wood and Lisa Karpuk were unimpressed as they waited for a Kamloops-South Thompson all-candidates forum to begin. The South Kamloops secondary students learned the governing B.C. Liberals would not have a representative at yesterday’s event at the school. As future voters — Wood will be of voting age next year and Karpuk the year after — they had questions they wanted to ask. They wanted to expand their knowledge of the political system so that, when they mark a ballot, they will be more informed than they are now. At the end of yesterday’s forum, they were angry because, at the time the event was to begin, one candidate was in his place — B.C. Communist representative Beat Klossner. NDP candidate Nancy Bepple arrived 10
minutes late and Green flag-bearer Donovan Cavers entered the library just as the forum was wrapping up. Teacher Don Wilson said he had been told ahead of time B.C. Liberal incumbent Todd Stone would not be there due to ministerial duties he had that day. The transportation minister was in Delta to take part in a kick-off ceremony for construction of the George Massey tunnel replacement project. (Stone told KTW he would have sent a representative to at least read a statement had he heard back from organizers.) The fact Stone did not attend or send a representative disappointed Wood. “They don’t care about our opinions,” she said. “I’m going to be able to vote next year and I want to know what the parties stand for.” See TEACHER, A6
