FSS in Bloom:
Fresh Spaces and New Facilities on the Way
Article by Savanna Dutcher | Photos by Marina Chayka
Kadena Force Support Squadron is preparing for a season of growth, with several new facilities scheduled to open soon, making this a blooming season for the squadron.
Everyone’s favorite o -base co ee shop is coming to the neighborhood. Zhyvago Co ee Roasters will soon replace Café Latte at Jack’s Place, bringing a popular local brand to the installation. Zhyvago is known for its freshly roasted co ee beans and handcrafted beverages. In addition to co ee, the shop will o er a variety of baked goods and branded merchandise, giving customers a familiar o -base co ee experience while expanding dining options at Jack’s Place.
Among upcomingtheopenings
is a new Bingo Hall, also at Jack’s Place, created in response to the growing popularity of The Rocker Club’s bingo program. The game has long been a favorite pastime, drawing large crowds and giving players the chance to win big while connecting with the community. The new space will provide a dedicated, welcoming environment for social interaction and recreation, giving patrons even more room to gather, unwind and enjoy one of the installation’s most beloved entertainment options.
Dough, a new pizza dining concept, is coming next month. Guests will be savoring handcrafted pies made with honest ingredients, bold creativity and a deep respect for the classics, from traditional favorites to inventive new creations. With a welcoming atmosphere and convenient location inside the Schilling Community Center, Dough will be a go-to spot for families, friends and anyone craving a fresh take on everyone’s favorite comfort food.
Air Power Cafe has also reopened
on the north end of the ight line, o ering co ee and convenient grab-and-go options. The revamped cafe includes a cozy seating area with couches, additional dining tables in the main area and self-serve microwaves for heating meal-prepped food. The cafe is open Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with the dining area accessible 24/7. Air Power Cafe operates as a cashless facility.
Additional details, including o cial opening dates and hours for upcoming facilities, will be announced soon. Be sure to stop by and check out all the new dining, co ee and entertainment options—there’s something blooming for everyone this season!
NEW Bingo Remixed,
a new Friday-night program at Hanabi’s, launches the rst Friday in March. The event runs weekly at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 per entry pack and the game is paper-only, with no electronic devices or required addons.
Designed as a modern, high-energy take on traditional bingo, Bingo Remixed emphasizes social play and a lively atmosphere, positioning the program as a fresh Friday night experience rather than a conventional bingo session!

Often overshadowed by neighboring Naha, the city of Urasoe rewards visitors willing to slow down and explore. Blending Ryukyu history, World War II landmarks, modern art and open green spaces, Urasoe makes for an ideal day trip that appeals to history bu s, creatives and families alike.
Start the day at Urasoe Castle Ruins, one of the oldest castle sites in Okinawa.
Once the seat of the Chūzan Kingdom in the 13th - 15th centuries, the ruins sit atop a hill overlooking the East China Sea. While much of the original structure is gone, stone walls and pathways remain, o ering a glimpse into pre-Shuri Ryukyu governance. Early morning visits are best, when temperatures are cooler and the grounds are quiet. This is a great place to start a peaceful stroll full of history and natural beauty.
A short walk from the castle leads to Hacksaw Ridge, known locally as Maeda Escarpment. The steep limestone ridge gained international recognition through the lm “Hacksaw Ridge,” which portrayed the World War II battle fought there. Today, the area is calm, marked by memorials and informational signage. The view from the ridge is quite spectacular making it a great photo stop if you’re so inclined.
From there, continue on to Tōyama Stone Pavement, an often-overlooked historical path once used by both royalty and commoners during the Ryukyu Kingdom era. The worn stones curve gently through a wooded area, evoking an older Okinawa that existed long before modern roads. It is an easy walk (except for a short but steep part of the path) and a quiet transition from historical landmarks to the city’s cultural core.
For lunch, head to Minatogawa, a revitalized neighborhood known for its colorful foreign-style homes (the buildings used to be U.S. military family housing) turned to local, independent businesses. The area o ers everything from Okinawan comfort food to artisanal shops, making it a popular stop for both locals and visitors. Its laid-back atmosphere encourages lingering, whether over co ee or a leisurely meal.
The afternoon is well spent at the Urasoe Art Museum, which focuses on Ryukyu lacquerware, textiles and contemporary Okinawan art. The museum’s clean, modern design contrasts with the traditional craftsmanship on display, highlighting how Okinawa’s artistic heritage continues to evolve. Rotating exhibitions often feature local artists, making repeat visits worthwhile.
End the day at Urasoe Park, a spacious green area adjacent to the castle ruins. Families gravitate toward the playground, home to an epic long roller slide that winds down the hillside (yes, adults can use it, too!). Children race back up for repeat rides, while adults relax under shaded trees or enjoy views of the city below.
Urasoe may not dominate travel brochures, but its compact layout and diverse attractions make it one of Okinawa’s most rewarding day trips. In a single day, visitors can move from ancient kingdoms to modern art, from re ective memorials to joyful playground laughter — all without rushing.
Check out www.kadenafss.com/itt for guided tours around Urasoe and much more!
