GLOBETROTTER: Morocco

Centuries of design, culture and architecture are seeped into the ancient city of Marrakech, and this is why our designer and her husband absolutely love visiting Morocco for design inspiration. From exploring the city’s contemporary design landscape through its unique concept shops and boutiques, to wandering through its maze-like souks for handicrafts and keepsakes, and indulging in traditional Moroccan fare at its excellent restaurants, its no wonder why they return to the beautiful country every chance they can.

Where to shop?

Exploring the treasured shops and digging through treasures is an all time favourite activity for our designer. Her favourite shops include: Maison ARTC, 33 Rue Majorelle, Boutique at El Fenn, Soufian Zarib's Private Riad, Souk Cherifia, El Abidi Nasser Eddine.

What to do?

There are so many must-dos when travelling to Morocco. You can't leave Morocco without getting a scrub from the luxurious hammam that is Royal Mansour Spa. For the architectural and landscape lovers, visiting Jardin Majorelle is a must see featuring a beautiful 12-acre botanical garden famed its cobalt blue building. And finally for the history lovers, get your dose from Maison de la Photographie which is full of vintage Moroccan documents, maps and photography dating back to the 1970s.

Where to eat?

Finding beautifully designed restaurants with the best food is one of the designers favourite things to do when in Marrakech. For interior and history lovers, Dar Marjana is spectacular, housed in a restored early 19th century mansion with rich tapestry and Moroccan design mostifs, this restaurant is definitely one of the best spots in the city for an elaborate feast, complete with live music and belly dancers. Another favourite would have to be La Terrasse des Espices located about the Souk Cherifia bazaar in the heart of Marrakech's medina.

Where to stay?

The historic 19th century private riad, L'Hotel Marrakch by Jasoer Conran is an all time favourite stay comprising of five luxurious suites built around a magnificent central courtyard and a swimming pool. The design of the hotel is incredible with a design sensibility marries traditional Moroccan craftsmapship with antique furniture and textiles. Another must stay is Riad El-Fenn [definitely a favourite of ours]. This hidden oasis lives in one of Marrakech's oldest neighbourhoods where the combination of traditional and contemporary Moroccan design is stunning.
