SCHOOLS AT WAR ✓-·-·
-·-
.~
----:-
l
SCHOOLS-AT-WAR PROGRAM We students of Clarkdale High School should be very proud of our part in the war effort. In our first goal we bought enough stamps and bonds to purchase a field ambu lance. The school's name was placed on this ambulance on March I, 1945. Then we went on to greater success to purchase a liaison plane. We are justly proud of our minute-man flag, for we were one of the first schools in the county to obtain the goal of ninety per cent of the students purchasing war bonds or stamps. Our achievements have also awarded us with a copy of the original Bill of Rights manuscript. Under the able chairmanship of Miss Alice Watson, several campaigns were staged to boost sales. The cake raffle was a huge success. Mothers donated the cakes, and the students bought stamps and bonds to receive chances on the cakes. Then later in the year the Rhythm Kids provided the music for a war stamp dance. The admission was war stamps. In addition there was a variety of games for those who didn't care to dance. Clarkdale High School students have also participated in the Red Cross and United Clothing drives with equal success.

On February 2 the club held its first dance in the high school.
And on March

The Drum and Bugle Corps marched through this year ,n the style that has become standard during the six years of its existence as an outstanding organization of C. H. S. The girls' snappy marching and tricky maneuvering at the football and basketball games were something to see! of C. H. S.
They did a lot towards boosting the school spirit
Through their efforts, a highly successful pep rally was organized
before one of the home football games. The corps was led by Barbara Moore as majorette, and Louise Fields and Pauline Foster as twirlers.

The Clarkdale High School Wolves had a rather disastrous football season. After tieing the first two games the squad lost four straight. On September 22 the Wolves journeyed to Williams. Clarkdale scored early in the second period with Russell going over from the four. Williams scored on a pass interception in the same period. The Wolves threatened continually, but the score ended 6-6. October 6 found the squad traveling to Flagstaff for an encounter with the Eagles. The Clarkdale team pushed the ball all over the field except over the goal line. The game ended in a scoreless tie. October 13 the Wolves bowed to the Northern Co-Champion Winslow squad. • Page Thirty-eight

RHAE WEASE: Halfback, Junior. A half back and when in the open very hard to stop. He is another Honorable Mention All Northern player. Give it everything you have next year, Rhae. PHILIP "PHIL" WOODRING: End, Junior. A pass snagging speed merchant. He still has one more year to go. VER BON "TOAD" YATES: Guard, Fresh man. Like his brother, Charlie, Verbon will make a mighty fine guard in the coming three years. ERNEST HARRISON: Guard, Freshman. Though not getting into any action, Ernest saw the season out. Things like that make ball players.
RAMON OLGUIN: Halfback, Freshman. Ramon didn't see action either, but also finished the season. JIM LOWELL: Guard, Senior. Jim had what it took to make a letter by playing for the first time. He proved exceptionally hard to handle on the defense.
MANUEL DE LA TORRE: Tackle, Sopho more. A big boy who can plug up those holes as well as he can make them. JACK "NOISY" ROBERTS: Center, Sopho more. Jack will develop into a fine lineman with his never say die attitude. Give it all you've got next year, Jack.

Fielding one of the finest teams in the Northern circuit, the Wolf cagesters registered surprising upsets over highly rated teams.
The lack of experience was
the team's chief detriment with only three returning lettermen.
Next year's outlook is exceptionally bright with all but John Krmpotich returning. May this year's mistakes be next year's victories.
The Wolves gained the semi-finals in the Northern Tournament by defeating the favored Holbrook five and then taking the Williams quintet; but finally losing out to Flagstaff in the semi-finals.

The hikes have carried them to Sycamore
and other places of interest to nature lovers.
They have helped the war effort by sponsoring paper, old bottle, and scrap drives.
In the way of advancement, one Scout has recently attained the rating of "Life," and two more are well on their way to the coveted "Eagle" Scout degree.

The doors of C. H. S. opened once again. Seemed kinda' nice to gei¡ back to the old grind, and see all the familiar smiling faces, and some new ones too! As a preview of what was to come, a social hour the third day of school. Good way to get acquainted. The freshmen and Clemenceau sophomores trudged up the hill and did a good job on the old C. Freshmen initiation and reception. Didn't the "greenies" look quaint in their costumes? How did they do it? They all looked quite human at the dance. The first football game of the year, played at Williams. The team got off to a good start with a tie.

We journeyed to Flagstaff and tied the Eagles too! The Wolves played host t-o Winslow and lost to the invaders. Kingman battered down the Wolves defenses on the home field, but it was a good game. The Drum and Bugle Corps did some fancy marching during the half. And don't forget that super dance after the game! Coed dance sponsored by the Seniors. The gals' night to shine!

St. Johns threw the Wolves for a loss before the eyes of the home folks. The big game of the season with our age-old rivals, Jerome. The Wolves put up a tough fight but the Muckers came out on top. Junior play cast. The juniors chose "A Mind of Her Own." The annual football banquet. The Home Economics Department certainly outdid itself for the team. And the team deserved it! Thanksgiving vacation. We needed the rest after all the hard work we had put out!
DECEMBER ... 8 15 20
The Junior play. We didn't realize we had so much talent floating around loose. Wickenburg and Clarkdale met on the home court for the first basketball game of the season. The visitors were also the victors, but we'll get 'em next time! Senior Hop. A wonderful way to start the Christmas vacation.

Back to the old grind. How time flies! Off to Flag in all the coats etc., we could round up. Must have been that icy weather that made the boys lose. Played the Muckers on the home court. A night of Victory for the Wolves. The Wolves met defeat at the hands of the Williams five at Williams. Too bad the cheering section couldn't go, might have been a different story. A National Assembly. The Valleaus, hypnotists held 1,1s spellbound with their interesting program.

The Lettermen sponsored a dance. Music was by "The Rhythm Kids." Mr. Al Truscott gave an enlightening talk on the G. I. Bill of Rights. Tryouts for the Senior play. The seniors chose a mystery, "The Red Spider." Sounds good! The Freshmen treated us all to a party at the clubhouse. Not only dancing but games as well! Music concert, sponsored by the Music Department. Swing and classical music were both on the program. Annual Letter.men Barn Dance. We had a super time in the Western setting, with the hay underfoot. And don't forget the calf! Spring holiday. How we looked forward to it!

The Wolves were in good form and beat Kingman while we cheered them on. The Wolves kept up their winning streak and beat Seligman. The boys journeyed to Prescott where they lost a hard fought game to the Badgers. The Seniors sponsored a social hour to raise funds for their almost de pleted treasury. We invaded Jerome during one of the worst snow storms ever, only to lose to the Muckers. Well, turn about is fair play! The Flagstaff Eagles came down in fine feather and trimmed the Wolves. The Badgers came over and the Wolves paid them back for the defeat they suffered in Prescott. After the game all rivalry was forgotten at the annual Sophomore Hop. Did you find your name on one of those hearts? 24 The team and most of the student body took in the Northern Arizona basketball tournament at Flagstaff. The boys got to the semi-finals where they were stopped by Flag.

End of our little vacation. Nice while it lasted! "Morton Magic," a National Assembly. We all have a weakness for magicians, and this show certainly lived up to our expectations. The big event of the year! Of course we Seniors think it was the next best prom ever.
