KEY CLUB This year Key Club is planning a busy year, since it had more members than ever before. This year's plans included helping Dollars for Scholars drive, sell­ ing refreshments at the Fourth of July fireworks, and various other community service activities. Key Club also spon­ sored a Key Club vs. Faculty volleyball game, a Marathon, and a carbonated invitational to raise money for the club. Other money-raising activities included selling pendants and other Marauder booster items. Key Club meets on Monday of every week in the conference room. Student Council is a national organization of student leaders working to change styles for the improvement of student life and activities. Behind every weekly meeting, plans are undertaken for raising money, sponsoring community service projects, and promoting school spirit by presenting social activities including dances, Homecoming, Powder Puff, and many other activities which seem to materialize at the last minute . Members are usually noted for pride in their schools.

TRAGYC-Traffic Represent­ atives of Arizona's Governor's Youth Coun­ cil is a new club started this year at Mingus to promote safety in numerous ways.

It is a state-wide organization started by Governor Jack Williams with the idea in mind that the youth of Arizona could play a major role in safety. In Oct. 1974, three representatives from Mingus went to a three day convention in Scottsdale. This started off the year's programs and projects, some of which were movie programs, bicycle safety, and a possible safety week in the spring. The state convention was held October 3-5 at the Scottsdale Sheraton Inn. Over 400 high school students from all over Arizona attended to discuss ways of promoting traffic safety. Representatives from Mingus included Robert Franck, Annette Kasparian, Cecile Pelletier, and Mr. Stelpstra. Demonstrations, films, workshops, and commentaries were given during the three days. Areas covered in­ cluded bicycle safety, WOW-women on wheels, pedestrian safety, dangers of drinking and driving, and mature techniques of driving. 33

Spanish Club Ventures to Mexico The purpose of the Spanish Club is to edu­ cate its members with the Spanish-speaking countries. This is achieved by annual trips to Mexico. Somehow, unexplainable to us, we seem to have more fun than education.

This year forty club members plan to go to Kino Bay, Hermosillo, Topolobampo, and Matazlan. This year marks the first time that the club has been farther south than Kino Bay. . -..... j.. club -‘.-.j To pay the expenses for this trip the has sold placemates and candles. They have also sponsored a dance.

The purpose of Omega Productions is to provide quality entertainment for the Verde VaHey and to supply experience in theatrical arts for the members of Omega Productions. The members accomplished their goals this year by performing four plays: John Brown's Body, The Invisible Dragon, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay, and Antigone. Members also are encouraged to learn about make-up, setting and lighting.

Boots’ n’ Blisters New This Year The Hiking Club is a new club this year and has been highly successful. For the Hiking Club's first two hikes they ven­ tured into Sycamore Canyon and Secret Canyon. Some other hikes they have planned include Boynton Canyon, Dry Creek, and at least one trip to the Grand Canyon.

Last year, VOCA members voted to join with Future Business Leaders of America, a national organization. In the past, only members of vocational business classes could join VOCA. The move to affiliate with FBLA opened the way for anyone in any business class to join FBLA - VOCA. In November the chapter officers went to a leadership conference held at Arizona State University. The conference's theme was "Enthusiasm!" In January there was a winter regional conference held at Northern Arizona University, where workshops were held to prepare members for the contests to be held at the spring general conference in April.

^4 Special Recognition Mr. Howard Harkey came to Mingus Union High School in 1965 to accept the position of Head Football Coach. With a determination that only a coach could have, Mr. Harkey guided Mingus Union's Varsity team through ten sea­ sons. This year Mr. Harkey announced his resignation as Head Coach, but he retained his teaching position. There­ fore, his ten seasons with Mingus Union deserves the special recognition that this page provides for his job well done.

Mrs. Elsie "Petie" Moore became em­ ployed by the Mingus Union High School District =4 in 1960. Since that time her unequaled dedication to Mingus Union has been sincerely appreciated. This year "Petie" retired from Mingus Union's employ as bookkeeper, and it is with deep respect and admiration that we dedicate this space to her.

Model U.N. represents Ireland and Guiana. The members had a meeting January 31 and February 1. This is an annual meeting in Tucson. They also had a meeting January 22 in Sunnyslope.

They discuss hypothetical problems that the real United Nations discuss. They then match their decisions with the United Nations'. Many high schools participate. Juniors and Seniors who are fairly active in school activities make good candidates for the Model U.N. Teachers decide who would make the best representatives.

The sponsors for this organization are Mr. Sidney Stelpstra and Mr. David Gray. They should be congratulated for their time and effort spent with this organization.

Tavas.ci’s Truckers Once again, Mr. John Tavasci has donatedi his time and trucks to offer a truck driving class for Mingus stu­ dents. A class was offered each semester and was open to both boys and girls.

The students are encouraged to prac­ tice highway safety at all times and are given driving experience in off­ set alley situations, weaving through the pylons, in both foreward and reverse gears. Interestate transportation rules and regulations constitute test items. Hats off to this progressive class and instructor, Mr. John Tavasci.

Every school has its own spirit makers and pepsters who do crazy things to help promote school spirit through people participation. Everyday for a cheerleader is like a never-ending routine of jumps, making faces at reflections in windows, and going on fad diets, practice never ceases, until four-thirty every night they scream

"F-l-G-H-T," practice timing mounts and get sore. They want to be better, so they buy new shoes and get uniforms cleaned. They practice buck-teethed smiles and pep assemblies. Then one day they go to camp and place first, so they cry. The end? Only the beginning of a perpetual challenge.

Girl's Athletic Association had a very fruitful year under the direction of new sponsor Mrs. Wendy Diskin. Mrs. Diskin was very impressed with the enthusiasm of the girls who participated in the program.

This year's season wasn't outstanding, but the optimism runs high for next year, despite the fact of losing some key graduating Seniors.

This is the second year Cross Country has placed first in division. They placed fourth in State. The team as a whole ran 7,300 miles this season. Herb Trujillo, top runner, ran 738 miles and won the Tavasci mileage award. High points in the season was a 27-28 win over Coconino, and a divisional win over Buck­ eye by 9 and Dysart by 10. The most improved runners this season are David Rodriguez and Bob Woods. "This year we had definite im­ provement over last year," says Coach O'Donnell, "and a significant benefit to our sports program."

Under the direction of former J.V. coach Mr. Fuller, the Freshman Basketball team completed their season with six wins and seven losses. Being a young team, the future years should prove to be very successful for this group.

Fresh­ man Randy Walters accompanied Juniors Tom Bentley and Robert Gaylor, and Sen­ ior Donnie Walters to the State Tourna­ ment. Mr. Lozano has great expectations for next year's Varsity Wrestling Squad as only five Seniors graduated—Joe Backus, Robert Franck, Fred Patterson, Zane Scott, and Donnie Walters.

Teruko Oguro was our foreign exchange student this year. "Terri," 18, is from Tokyo, Japan, where she graduated from high school last year. She learned from a teacher about the exchange program. Once she passed the examination through the exchange service, she was allowed to come to America. Once here in the Verde Valley, she lived with the Bache-wiig family, and later she lived with the Hills family. Coming from a big city school of over 1000 stu­ dents, Terri found Mingus quite a change. Mingus Union was fortunate and glad to have her as one of our students.
