Our goal for education at Mingus Union High School is to prepare young people to live. There has been no other time in history that offers the challenges to young adults as it does today. Students must see the objective of life in a democracy. They must realize, in order to live in a free society, we must obey the laws of the land and conform to regulations set up by our society. We must have a "sense of values" and the strength of character to live up to these values.

It has been a privilege for me to share with you a most interesting year of varied experiences. Let us hope that, in addition to learning subject matter, we have learned more fully to like and accept ourselves and others, to trust each other, to communicate more fully, to be tolerant, to be cooperative, to be appreciative, and to work toward goals that will improve our lives. There are tremendous quality and potential in our fine student body. It is my hope and prayer that every student will continue to progress and to make his or her life a quality performance.

These students of Mingus Union were honored by being chosen as representatives of Boy and Girl States . Alternates for this honor were Pat Mansell and Rick Mabery. As an additional honor, Maeve Vincent was chosen as alternate to Girl's Nation. A week of fun and hard work ensued for these students . The girls gathered at Univer sity of Arizona, Tucson, while the Boy's Nation was held at Northern Arizona University. These gatherings were supposed to model the house and senate of the state. They set up a temporary state government and run for the certain offices . In this way they find out more about the way our government is run and how the politicians run for these offices.

Football—Sport Of Men Every one of the boys on these two pages has proved that he has what it takes. These are boys who were fighting for you and your school every Friday night. This year we had none of the glory seekers of the past years due to the forfeiting of seven games. Every one of the boys was playing because he enjoyed playing. But more important because he wanted to support his, and your, school. This was demonstrated this year by the fact that we had the hardest playing team in Mingus Union's history. This was because of teamwork; not stars. We will always have a good team if we remember this .

This year we played some of the top teams in the state. Our team gave these teams something to think about if we ever play these teams in the future. They realize Mingus Union is no second-rate school. And it never will be if the students realize that no team or school can exist on a few stars, they must have teamwork. But the football team isn't everything at the game. The crowd plays an important part of any football games. Our followings have been very good this year. This shows that the students were behind the team all of the way. Let's keep it that way; because that's what makes Mingus Union High School the best anywhere.

Mingus Squad Proves Victory Takes Forfeit With Honor This year our Varsity football team made what perhaps was the greatest victory of all. Our school made a victory of honor by forfeiting our first seven games due to a technical ity of elligibility of one of our players. Had the forfeight not been made we would have had 4 wins, 3 losses, and 2 ties. Yet in order that there would be no doubt as to Mingus' honesty the forfeit had to be made. This left us with 2 wins. The score line up went as follows:

The 1968-69 Junior Varsity football season was not one of the best as far as scores go. Our wins totaled 1, and we tied 1, game. According to one of the players even though they had a hard season they learned alot about the fundamentals of football. Although game losses far exceeded game wins our J.V. spirit didn't suffer much loss. The actual scores and opponents remain as follows:

The Mingus Marauders' Varsity basketball team gave its full effort in every game. Although there weren't many wins, the team never gave up until the final buzzer sounded. Great individual effort was shown and team work was plentiful. In the last home game of the season, the seniors displayed their individual talents while beating Window Rock 58-37 in the Marauders' biggest victory up to that time . This year the 1969 Tracksters welcomed back their four returning seniors, Chuck West, David Livingston, Fernando Lucero, and Mike Woodard. Excelling in their various fields of hurdles, pole vault, discus and the mile dashes, the boys led their teammates through a proud season. The team, although hindered by the weather at the beginning of the season, practiced every afternoon in order to be in top shape for their seasonal meets. Coached by Mr. O'Donnell, the boys learned new and different methods pertaining to their various talents as well as improving their own style. Although the Hi-Lo went to press before the action was well under way, the staff wished the team the best of luck as did the whole student body to keep our team on the top.

The 1969 Mingus Union Varsity Baseball team started it's season with 4 returning seniors, John Smith, Dan Hatch, Ken Barbarick and Chuck Bill. Although they missed their first game with Prescott due to snow, they were able to make it up. Diligent practice on the part of all the boys made the team something to be proud of.

Coached by Mr. Schlick and Mr. Wombacker, the Junior Varsity proved to have a good season. The boys learned a lot from their baseball experience this year, and all have hopes of moving to the Varsity squad next year. Like all the other Spring sports at Mingus, this team was, too, hindered by the fact that on the date of their first game, the field was covered with mud, which also caused them to forfeit much of their practice time.

This year's golf and tennis teams ran into some problems with the weather, and had to cancel some of their first matches. Although they were limited in practice time, they both had a good season. The golf team sports three seniors, Paul Tavasci, Howard Harkey, and Jim Allen. The tennis team is led by Dan Doubleday, also a senior. Coach Howard Harkey

The Quill and Scroll, a national organization consists of Journalism and Yearbook students. In order to be a member, the student must hold a 3.00 grade average throughout the year and excell in a form of creative writing. Top Award for publications staff members membership in Quill and Scroll is the highest honor that can be granted to a high school journalist. Membership places the student in company with many of today's distinguished journalists who became members in high school. The membership qualifications are high, but advisors are urged to make this honor available to every student who meets the Society's standards.

The Key Club is a Mingus boys service organization. One of the largest clubs on campus, the Key Club always helps with the penny-a-pound airlift. They also burn the traditional M on homecoming and sponsor an annual New Years Eve Dance. They also elect a Sweetheart.

Future Teachers Work Hard Toward Goals Preparing the students for a future teaching career, the F.T.A. is an active Mingus ■Club. The Future teachers sold Christmas Candles to raise money to attend the state con vention in Yuma. The girls also taught classes in the elementary schools during the year. The Band has engaged in many fund-raising activities around the Verde Valley and Sedona areas, in hopes of raising enough money for a trip to Disneyland. Among these many projects were car washes, bake sales, and two Mother-Daughter basketball games.

Marauder Marching Band Busy Year - Round The Mingus Marauder Marching Band, under the Direction of Mr. Ken Railey, was featured this year at all home football games and a number of away games. The Band also traveled to the Arizona State Fair and performed in the Christmas Parade. 95
Lettermans Club consists of mem bers who have lettered in one of the six sports at Mingus. Every year there is an initiation in May for new lettermen. There is an informal steak fry and a paddling session where all the new lettermen are swatted by each veteran member of the club.

Editor Has Last Say In Yearbook Most students don’t realize the amount of work which must be put into a yearbook before it goes to press. They cannot real ize the disappointments and heartaches that are involved. Each staff mem ber becomes a friend in the sincerest meaning of the word. There are deadlines that must be met, but most often are not because of late photos or unwritten copy. There are many ex cuses for not meeting these deadlines. Some times an organization can not realize that all the pages are numbered with photos ready to go, and want a photo taken over simply because someone couldn't be bothered to show up. It is the editors responsibility to make sure all pages are done to perfection even if it means doing it himself. But there are some rewards in doing a year book and the staff can only realize this when the year book is delivered. It's their baby and they're proud of it. They have a right to be. Without a hard working staff a yearbook cannot be produced. I want to thank my staff for their hard work and steady efforts in helping to produce this yearbook.
