DEDICATION In making the dedication of this 1948 Alchemist, we, the senior

class, choose to dedicate ourselves to the task of preserving and cherishing our way of life in these United States — the democratic

way of life. We have been reared in a country that has respect for its own integrity and for the integrity of the individual. During

the past war many other nations with different forms of govern s>

ment became known to us, and we learned that national morality and individual freedom are in some of them non-existent. With this knowledge our own country becomes even dearer to us. As we

take our places in the great social order of this United States, we hope that we may practice a rule of living that will safeguard our democracy.

Jimmy Byrkit (Burdo), Junior, right end. Burdo is another of Clarkdale's glue-fingered receivers. Burdo rolled up a lot of yardage with his pass snagging. Everardo Caballero (Cab), Junior, left end. Cab's extraordinary pass snagging and swivel-hipped running earned him a place on the All-Northern Team. Donald Coon (Coonball), Freshman, right tackle. Although only a Freshman, Don played a lot of ball. John Crawford, Junior, right end.Early in the season John broke his arm. This did not stop him; he stuck with the team until he was able to play. He is a good hustler. Edward Durnez (Red), Junior, right tackle. Red was a late comer, but he was soon excelling in the blocking and tackling department. Charles Haltigan (Hoolie), Freshman, left end. He saw only a little action, but he showed that, although small, he could cer tainly take it. Edward Hoebbel (Cueball), Freshman. He acquired a wider knowledge of football, which he will need in the years to come. Good luck, Cueball. Louie Hood, Freshman, right halfback. Louie saw plenty of action and has the makings of a good football player George Krmpotich, Sophomore, left guard. Geroge saw plenty of action this year. He proved to be an exceptionally good player who was hard to stop. Ramido Leon (Tilo), Senior, halfback. This scatback's speedy, swivel-hipped running fooled many opponents and his ability on defense was superb. Ramido, a four-year letterman, was elected co-captain of the team this year. Sistel Luna (Cisco), Senior, guard. Cisco earned a place in the first string line for his never-say-die attitude. He suffered sev eral injuries, but this didn't stop him. Joe Medina (Medina), Junior, fullback Jos was changed from tackle to fullback, and from there on he became the leader of Clarkdale's famed aerial attacks. Many opponents' lines were smashed by Joe's jet-propelled drives. Tony Maya (Indio), Senior, right end. Tony's pass-snagging brought about many victories. He has been on the All-Northern Team for two years, on the All-State Second Team and received Honorable Mention on All-State. Angal Maya, Junior, left guard. This was Angel's first year out for football. Although handicapped by lack of weight, he showed many opponents his fight and spirit. Tommy Niven (Snooky), Junior, left half. This was Snooky's first year in the backfield. He proved that he can take it as well as dish it out. Frank Martinez (Chango), Sophomore, right end. Chango has proved himself to be an excellent pass receiver. Ramon Olguin (Blackie), Senior, left guard. This boy gave up the backfield for the line, and he really knew what he was doing, for he played like a veteran lineman until sidelined with a shoul der injury. Clifford Riggs (Riggs), Senior, left tackle. This California boy was a great help to Clarkdale, especially in smashing up the op ponents' plays. Kenneth Ragle (Kenny), Sophomore, center. Believe me, Kenny is going to be a great center in the years to come. Laurence Russell (Hoot), Junior, quarterback, Clarkdale's mighty ball machine was led by ole Hoot, who called the plays and was always outsmarting the opponent. Derek Van Deren (V.D.), Senior, right tackle. Here's a boy we * all want to take off our hats to, because, although living in Cot tonwood, his love of C. H. S. didn't stop him from playing foot ball for us. Gene Tutt (Tutter), Senior, left end. Tutt soon started to spe cialize in pass snagging, but lack of experience and weight kept him from seeing much action. But he finished out the season and that means that he can take it. Verbon Yates (Toad), Senior, center. The word is "great.” Verbon is an all-around player who can do anything with a foot ball. This "bone-crusher" was nominated to the All-Northern Team. Vicente Contreras (Vic), Senior, left half. Vic was the speedster on this year's squad. Lack of weight didn't seem to stop him in his bursts of speed. Joe Berolatti (Sonny), Freshman, right end. Only a Freshman, Sonny earned his first letter this year. Lack of weight didn t discourage him any; it only made him try harder and receive a wider knowledge of football.
