"SCHOOL HAYS" FEATURING THE STUDENTS OF CLARKDALE HIGH SCHOOL

world’s a stage” “All the woiid's a stage And all the men and ivomen merely players ” In this Alchemist we present to you the players of Clarkdale school in their acts which were featured in the 1946-47 show.

We shall

soon ring down the curtain on this performance, but we hope that the actors and scenes may, in these pages, remain vividly in your

minds. MARY MORIN, Editor

To Mr. George Bryant Jones, who, as superintendent of Clarkdale schools for the past twenty-one years, has so excellently contributed to the welfare of the many students who have passed through these schools, we, the seniors, dedicate this 1947 Alchemist.

We are

grateful to Mr. Jones for his friendly guidance and thoughtful efforts in our behalf.

As he leaves Clarkdale high school, our sincere wishes

go with him for his continued happiness and prosperity.

CONSTELLATION OF FOOTBALL STARS TOM BARRAGAN (Squeaky) Senior, quarterback. Here is a valuable player C. H. S. is going to lose this year. His clever swivel-hipped running and his Harry Gilmer style passing made many spectators sit up and take notice. He was nom inated to the second team All-Northern. WILLARD BLOODWORTH (Willie) Junior, left guard. Willard did not participate very much in football this year because of a leg injury which he received early in the season. We hope that he will be back in action next year. JIMMY BYRKIT (Burdo) Sophomore, right end. Jimmy didn't see much action this year, but he went out and practiced all the season. Practice makes good football players, so we suggest that he keep it up and some day he may become one of Clarkdale's football stars. CHARLES CARLSON (Chuck) Junior, left tackle. Here is a boy who literally stands above the heads of the others. He used his superior height to the best advantage. JACK BREWER (Jackie) Senior, guard. He was considered dan gerous to encounter on the practice field. EVERARDO CABALLERO (Cab) Sophomore, left end. One of the best pass receivers on our team was Cab. He could really snag them. Two or three men around never bothered him in the least. Statistics show that he was high-point man for 1946. Cab merited Honorable Mention, All-Northern. VINCENTE CONTRERAS (Turo) Junior, left half. Vicente was one of the lightweights this year. Although he was handicapped by lack of weight, he was swift, elusive and he put his abilities to good use. He has one year ahead of him and the prospects for him are favorable. DALE COON (Coonball) Sophomore, left guard. This football player manifested his ability to us and to our opponents. Dale has proved that he can take it just as well as he can dish it out. His fighting spirit on the line stopped many enemy drives and helped many of ours. BILLY COX (Gag Boy) Sophomore, right end. Billy showed us that he could really take care of his position. It was Billy's first year out for football. He seems to have made a good showing because he is the kind of boy that never says "die." MANUEL DE LA TORRE (Mack) Senior, right tackle. He showed us that he had plenty of everything. In the games he played he showed that he could do the right thing at the right time.

^5/f/ s'?

.

JOHN CRAWFORD (Idiaipt) Sophomore, right tackle. He gained valuable experience which will help make him a good candidate for Clarkdale's future team.

CONSTELLATION OF FOOTBALL STARS ! He got plenty of JOHN DE WITT (Johnny) Senior, tackle. strenuous practice exercise. He gained no actual experience on the field, yet he is a little wiser now than before because he gained a wider knowledge of football.

:

ONOFRE DURAN (Durazno) Junior, right guard. This little chunk of dynamite, although handicapped by lack of weight, showed many opponents his fight and spirit. He has one more year ahead of him. We wish him the best of

luck. CARLOS ESQUEDA (Charlie) Senior, right guard. This is the first year Carlos went out for football, and, incidentally, be cause of graduation, his last. He is a fearless player who goes after his foe. GLESTON FREEMAN (Tiny) Senior, right guard. Gleston was the big-heavy man of the football squad. This is Gleston's last year in high school. MANUEL GARCIA (Mel) Freshman, halfback. fast and tricky man who has what it takes player. He anticipated the enemy's action He is an excellent tackier and is good at blocks. i

!: c

!

i

He is a tough. to be a football and stopped it. throwing rolling

GEORGE KRMPOTICH. Freshman, left guard. George is striv ing for a place in Clarkdale's constellation of football stars. You may expect to see him in the lead soon. ALBERT HOEBBEL (Fat) Senior, right tackle. When this 195pounder pounds them, they stay pounded. He did his assignment with compound force, always acquiring excellent results. EDWARD HOEBBEL (Cue Ball) Freshman, manager. Edward took quite a beating this year as is to be expected of all football managers. He took pains to supply the team with clean laundry and he succeeded in doing it. He was the team's "deliverer of the goods." RAMIDO LEON (Cucho) Junior, right halfback. A speedy and shifty halfback who showed opponents that he could really use his feet. He was handicapped by lack of weight but he made up for that by his speedy shiftiness.

!

VINCENTE LEON (Chacho) Junior guard. Vicente has been in quite a few games. He is an experienced player, having come out for football every year. ARTHUR LYSONS (Buddy) Senior, back. Buddy is one of Clarkdale's former servicemen. He might have acquired hon ors in football if it hadn't been for his age. He served in the Navy and upon returning to school discovered that he was ineligible to play; however, his liking for football was so great that he kept on coming out for practice until the end of the season. TONY MAYA (Indio) Junior, right end. Tony is an excellent pass receiver and a good all-around end. When he couldn't stop o play going around his end, he would spill the inter ference so that the line backer could get at the ball carrier. He still has one year ahead of him.

CONSTELLATION OF FOOTBALL STARS GREGORY MASSARO (Greg) Junior, left end. In the games in which he played he proved to be an exceptionally good player who was hard to stop once he got started. JOE MEDINA (Medina) Sophomore, right tackle. Joe is indis pensable first string tackier. He is an excellent football player and has verified this by making some bone crushing tackles. He may be expected to be in Clarkdale's hustle and bustle for a couple of years more. TOMMY NIVEN (Snooky) Sophomore, right guard. He got a taste of football this year and expects to get a taste of some more. RAMON OLGUIN (Tampo) Junior, right halfback. He has been in there for a number of years and may well be expected to endure one more. He is a tricky player.

FLOYD PIGG (Piggie) Senior, right half. Floyd was the speedster of the team this year. He showed the first team his speed on the field.

JESUS VALDEZ (Chuey) Sophomore, halfback. This player showed the first team that he could carry the ball, and he also proved to be quite good in the tackling and blocking department. He has two years to play for C. H. S.

LAWRENCE RUSSELL (Hoot) Sophomore, left tackle. A powerful tackle and linebacker. Hoot played in a position where he would be the most effective and detrimental to the opposing team.

GENE RUNGE (Porky) Junior, center. Gene didn't get into very much of the fight this year, but he stuck out the season. He has one more year left to play for C. H. S.

BOBBIE RUSSELL (Nickelhead) Senior, fullback. This year Bobbie fulbacked Clarkdale's T-machine to many brilliant victories. His expert linebacking stopped many would-be touchdowns and his accurate passing and signal calling helped bring about many of ours. C. H. S. is going to miss Bobbie next year.

!

DEREK VAN DEREN (Van Deren) Junior, left guard. He saw only a little action, but he demonstrated to his opponents that he wasn't fooling.

VERBON YATES (Toad) Junior, center. and accurate center. He rated Northern this year.

This man made a speedy Honorable Mention All-
