PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS CLARKDALE HIGH SCHOOL CLARKDALE, ARIZONA

icatian We, the Senior Class of 1944, dedicate this Alchemist to our parents, who have done so much to make our school years happy and profitable.

As we go on from

this high school graduation, which for many of us will mark the beginning of a new time, we sincerely hope that we prove ourselves worthy of the love and under standing care which they, Mother and Dad, have so unstintingly given to us.

In the same manner that our boys ac cepted the challenge to defend our coun try and our democratic way of life, so will we of the Class of 1944 accept the respon sibility of taking our place in a changing world with an unfaltering trust that the high ideals of our American institutions will be the beacon light to victory and to a world of peace. As we take our respective places in the pattern of which we shall become a part, may this annual be the link to keep the bonds of friendship and memory forever dear to all. Ruth Wiggins, Editor.

September 25, 1943 Dear Joe:

I

I

Remember, Joe, when you were a senior and I was one of those awfully young freshmen? See, I thought you were super—even when you and the rest of the seniors that year made us wear burlap sacks for initiation. I’ll never forget those days and I guess the Freshies and Clemenceau Sophs will never forget some of the things they did last week. You should have seen them yesterday in bathing suits over long flannels—I didn't think there were that many long flannels in sunny Arizona. They really looked like nothing in this world but seemed to recuperate enough to have a good time at the reception given by the Forum last night. And they could still dance in spite of having struggled up the hill the day before to paint the "C". School started September 7 with everyone in a dither—very superior seniors, sophisticated juniors, sophomores still slightly befuddled but relieved that they had at least passed the initiation hazard—and, of course, the fresh young things looking a little startled. We have a football game coming up soon. Practice got under way the day after school started and the crystal gazers say we might have us a good football team. Remember how you used to study signals when you should have had your mind on Civics? Keep your signals straight now, Joe, and get those Japs. you. Always, MAISIE

October 21, 1943 Dear Joe: School is well under way now with the banging of lockers, homework, and the twelve-o'clock rush. I guess it hasn't changed much since you went to school here. The first Wolf Howl came out October 8, so studies suffered while we caught up on the latest gossip. The journalism class plans to send Wolf Howls to the boys in service from our school. I hope you will get one. That U. S. O. dance you went to sounds swell. I guess there are so many serv ice men in San Diego it is hard to have a good time. We started the football season off with a bang by defeating Kingman 19-0 on October 9. I didn't get to go because the game was played there. The mighty Wolves beat Prescott 20-0 last night. Whatta game! I wish you could have been here. I yelled so much I can hardly talk today. The Drum and Bugle Corps did a swell job of marching. Senior rings came October 12. They are very attractive and look very much like the ones you got when you were a senior. The seniors got their pictures taken October 12 and 13. Gee, but they looked pretty! I never saw so many ties and new dresses before! Yesterday was a sad day for C. H. S. students. Report cards! That subject is always depressing. Aren't you glad the navy doesn't send report cards home to your parents? 'Bye now, MAISIE PAGE

November 12, 1943 Dear Joe: November already! months.

It doesn't seem possible that we have gone to school two

I guess you have about finished "boot camp" by now, and will soon be going somewhere else. Your overnight liberty into Los Angeles sounds wonderful! Guess you "took in" the Paladium or Florentine Gardens or something like that. Those Wolves are really in the groove. They chalked up an easy victory against Williams 32-0 October 22. We were defeated 13-7 for the first time this season when we played Prescott October 29. That's o.k. though. We'll make a come-back. Anyway, it was the second game with the Badgers, so it didn't count in the confer ence standings. We whipped Williams 41-13 November 5. The boys played a bangup game. The Wolves tangled with the Jerome Muckers yesterday and came out the victors 12-8. As you well know, Nov. I I is one day that is always exciting to C. H. S. students. Maybe some of our boys in the Army and Navy got some of their fighting spirit here in the Armistice day games. One day's vacation came in handy too, so we could all rest up for the game.

Joe, what would you think about changing the school colors and song? The Lettermen's Club suggested we change the colors to maroon and gold and the song to "In Our Hearts." They brought the question up in assembly November 4 and since then it has caused quite heated arguments. We were wondering what the alumni thought about it and would really like to hear some of their opinions. C. H. S. joined with thousands of students all over the country in the annual Red Cross Drive November 8-12. We are proud that C. H. S. students contributed to such a worthy cause. Sincerely, MAISIE P. You should have been here November 12. The Juniors staged a benefit dance that was simply super. More fun!! And to make Thanksgiving day even more per fect the Drum and Bugle corps sponsored a dance November 25. I could have danced more if I hadn't eaten quite so much though. Anyway, thanks to the Drum Corps for a swell dance. The Thanksgiving edition of the Wolf Howl came out the 24th. I gave Miss Watson your new address so she could put it on the service page. I see by your last letter that you are now 3rd class pharmacist's mate. Good enough! I'm glad you got your rating o.k. How do you like San Francisco? I guess it's just as crowded as San Diego. We had two days Thanksgiving vacation, the 25th and 26th. It certainly did come in handy. I hope the Navy gave you sailors a swell Thanksgiving dinner. We played our last football game November 19. Winslow defeated us 20-12. Oh well, we can't always win. Anyway, our boys really had a good season. Yours, MAISIE

December II, 1943 Dear Joe: It was really great seeing you on your leave! Too bad you couldn't have stayed longer though. I'm glad your old Alma Mater didn't seem changed much to you.

We all The Scholastic Magazine presented an assembly here November 29. enjoyed it immensely—especially since we got out of our first period classes. Ouch! Report cards came out again December I. Gee!—with Christmas so near and everyone trying to be so good! Guess I'll have to work especially hard now until Christmas. I came up one point in Civics though, so I feel pretty proud of myself. The Lettermen's Club cheered us up by giving a dance December 3. And whatta dance! The lettermen not only can play ball, but they really know how to put on a dance. Our team travelled to Wickenburg for the first basketball game of the season December 10. We were defeated 45-20. We’ll just call it experience. I'm actually sick from laughing so much at "Brother Goose" the junior play, which was presented last night. It was a riot! I wish you could have seen Phyllis Garrison in her football suit. Mo Lindner looked rather odd, too, operating a sew ing machine. Good luck, MAISIE

December 23, 1943 Dear Joe: Excuse me for not answering your letter any sooner, I've had the flu, but I'm o.k. now. Quite a few of our students have been out of school with flu. The Navy Pre-Flight cadets beat our boys in basketball in a non-conference We had another game here December I I sponsored by the Lettermen's Club, game with them last night and again the Navy downed us. Senior pictures came December 15. They really came out very well—consid ering. Oh well, you can't expect miracles, I guess.

dance! Yippee! Gee, The seniors gave their hop December 17 and was it how I would have liked to dance a couple of dreamy waltzes with you, Joe! The dance was a huge success and everyone there had loads of fun. What those Lettermen don't think of—this afternoon in assembly they enter tained the student body with a little close harmony—well, pretty close anyway. They sang "White Christmas"—but nice. Really though, it was swell—we need a boys' glee club. Aren't you proud that you are a C. H. S. Letterman? They are doing a splendid job of building school spirit. Merry Christmas, Joe, and I hope that next Christmas vacation! Yippee! Christmas will find our boys well on their way home for good. Always, MAISIE

January 23, 1944 Dear Joe: Happy New Year! Did you have a nice Christmas? I certainly enjoyed the nice long rest. It was hard to start back to school again January 3. I guess we were spoiled after such a wonderful holiday. But the Drum and Bugle Corps helped us keep our spirits up by sponsoring another dance the first Friday after we came back.

It was just what we needed to start a glorious new year.

The Lettermen had a banquet on January 12 honoring the football team.

Mrs.

Irvin and some of the Home Economics girls prepared the dinner and I hear tell the baked ham was really something.

All the boys looked pretty-well fed the next

day. Our basketball team started the New Year off with a flourish by defeating Kingman 32-26 on January 7. on Seligman on the way back.

They played the game there and the next night took The score from that game isn't so good—for us.

We took Prescott 27-22 on the 15th.

This weekend we had

two games with Jerome—the first up there and the second here last night.

We

came out second best both nights. The girls are playing some basketball too.

We started an intramural tourna

ment last Thursday with the Seniors beating the Juniors 37-27.

We're playing a

round-robin tournament so it will go on for several weeks. You remember I told you about the proposed change in school colors and song? The student body voted to change the song, but not the colors. So the colors remain maroon and white, but our Alma Mater is now "In Our Hearts." I made a few New Year’s resolutions, but I knew from past experience that it was useless to make too many, One that I don't need to make is to keep praying that this war v/ill soon be over and you will all be home again, I'm doing that all the time. February

1944

Dear Joe: January 21 marked the end of the first semester. Boy, am I exhausted! All those last minute book reports and make-up tests really got me down! I guess I'll have to add to my New Year's resolutions that of not putting everything off until the last minute. Never again! I've learned my lesson! Report cards came out Wednesday. All my efforts in vain! Guess I shouldn’t have gone to that last picture show. How am I ever going to explain this to Pop?!

erns.

We had a technicolor picture show in assembly last Monday on Carlsbad Cav It was really beautiful.

Clarkdale and Wickenburg last Friday in a game there which resulted in a score of 26 to 43 in their favor. The Fourth War Loan drive started in the high school today with Miss Watson and Minute Maids from the V. S. O. (Verde Service Organization) in charge. War bonds, stamps, and warsages were sold at a stand in the lower hall. And you should see the Minute Maids. They wear very snappy blue hats and white collars that would really take your eye; Even after this drive is over, the sales here in school will continue. We want to buy a jeep as a special contribution from C. H. S. We hope our effort will bring our fighting boys a little closer to victory. Always, MAISIE >■*.

March I, 1944 Dear Joe: Of all times when we should have the storm of the year, we chose last week He came when Mr. Bate came over to take the rest of the Alchemist pictures. Wednesday morning and so did the rains. He stayed through Thursday though and took practically all the pictures inside. The rest he will come back for in a few days. We've been very busy lately getting all the annual material together but expect to have that situation in hand very soon now. The basketball boys were in Flagstaff Friday and Saturday to play in the Northern Arizona tournament. In the first game we beat Seligman 26-24 but drew Jerome in the next round and didn't fare so well. They took us 37-23 and went on to win the tournament championship. Speaking of champions, the Junior girls managed to come out ahead 19-16 in a fast and furious game with the Sophomores this afternoon to win the tournament. It was a play-off as the two teams were tied after the round robin. PAGE

Well, I guess well soon be losing Mr. Newton to the Navy. He went to Phoenix several days ago for his examination and it seems he'll be leaving us in a couple of weeks. We'll miss him. Gee, we had the best picture show last Thursday. It was called "Land of Lib erty" and was a history of America. That's the way I like my history. I went into Room 105 today and was shocked to see all the girls there with their heads bandaged. I thought someone had committed mayhem, but Miss Watson explained that it was the First Aid class doing a little practicing. It looked pretty grim. Whoops!—report cards again next week.

They're always with us.

Bye. As ever, MAISIE

WINNERS — WOLVERINES

March 18, 1944 Dear Joe: You have really been in the thick of the fighting, haven t you? as you can, Joe, and don’t get hurt.

Be as careful

Have I told you that the girls are bowling again this year? We have four teams —Alley Rats, Wolverines, Rambling Wrecks, and Gutter Gals. We bowl every Monday—Tommy Sherman says you can tell by the racket who s bowling. So far the Wolverines have come out on top in every round (we ve played three) but the second round was a close one. The Gutter Gals got out of the gutter and tied them, but in the playoff the Wolverines won. The sale of War Bonds and Stamps is really going strong. So far, students and teachers have bought $1,838.95 worth of bonds and stamps. Pretty good, Id say! Report cards came out again March 8. That’s enough on that subject. The Freshmen gave a !St. Patrick's Day dance last night. their stuff with a gaily decorated hall and orchestra.

They re a Ily strutted

Affectionately, MAISIE PAGE

April 10, 1944 Dear Joe:

.

The Seniors certainly put on an impressive play this year. It was "Cry Havoc," the story of army nurses on Bataan. As you probably know, it has an all-girl cast. The action took place in a bomb-proof shelter, and records of explosions, guns, etc. were used for sound effects. We had one day's Easter vacation Friday. all day.

It certainly felt good to just relax

For a long time now I've been curious about mysterious tappings I've heard around school, so I made a little investigation the other day. I thought maybe there were some fifth columnists or sabateurs hidden out, but, after looking around I found it was quite otherwise. We have a group of boys studying radio code under Miss Henson's direction and the tappings were their code signals to one another. Some of the boys are amateur cadets, and I understand they expect this work to be quite useful to them when they get in the army. Report cards are coming out soon, after Pop sees them.

I'll probably not be able to get the car

The boys had a badminton tournament last month, Robert Leon was winner with Gene Loy runner-up. The boys' gym classes also had a basketball tournament which the Seniors won. Sophomores were runr^rs-up. I visited the Latin American club yesterday. The members were giving reports on different Latin-American countries. They had also made flage of the countries they were reporting on. Always, MAISIE

I

Dear Joe:

Oh, I had more fun on a certain day in May! I guess you know what—Ditch Day for the Seniors! This was one time when it was an approved A. W. O. L. And did we have fun!

i \ i

School was out today and all the students went back for report cards. Although the Seniors had already received their diplomas, many of them were seen wandering around in the halls the last day. If you had only been here for the Junior Prom May 12, Joe! The decorations were lovely, and the music was heavenly. I certainly wished for a couple of waltzes with you! Everyone had a grand and glorious time. We all looked so dignified, I hardly realized it was the same gang of kids who run around in old jalopies.

F ?■

Getting down to the more serious side of things, I guess I have spent all the time I'm going to in the classrooms of C. H. S. We attended Baccalaureate services May 21 and Commencement last night. An all-Senior choir sang Dear Land of Home'' from Finlandia, and I guess every Senior was a little sorry that he was leaving Clarkdale High. Goodbye and good luck, MAISIE
