W
hile Winnetka officials were focused on a downtown master plan and the controversial One Winnetka development, both promising to breathe new life into the village’s shopping districts, the owners of Hoffman Commercial Real Estate saw an opportunity. The firm, based in St. Louis, owns a total of 12 properties on the North Shore, with three more currently under contract. Real men grow dahlias

T
here are a couple of things you need to do before asking a dahlia gardener to talk about his favorite flowering plant: sharpen your pencil for note-taking, find a comfortable chair, and settle in for an animated conversation that likely will include words you normally don’t associate with flowers: words like rebar, nirvana, dinner plate, yams. “Dahlias are indigenous to Mexico where, before the Spanish Conquest, they were grown by the Aztecs for their tubers but not for their flowers,” said George Koons, a Glencoe dahlia gardener and member of the Central States Dahlia Society (CSDS). “Just as we use other types of tubers such as potatoes and yams, the Aztecs used dahlia tubers as a dietary staple.” Fortunately for those who love enormous flowers that can reach the size of Frisbees, the Spanish brought the plant to Europe and affection grew throughout the land, eventually spreading to the United States. Today there are 42 recognized dahlia species and approximately 57,000 varieties. Despite the variety, dahlias are not widely known and appreciated, something the 275 members of the Central States Dahlia Society (many of whom are located in the Chicago area) would like to rectify. Many members will be at the Chicago Botanic Garden on May 6 and 7 for the group’s annual plant and tuber sale, which will feature plants in dozens of sizes, shapes, and colors that Society members propagated over the winter from last year’s dahlia crop. At last year’s sale, 1,500 plants were sold.

As of this writing, about 200 of this year’s dahlia plantings are sprouting in Koons’ Glencoe attic, which he and his wife, Anne, turned into a homegrown propagation operation a while back. “It used to be an au pair apartment,” Koons said. “Now it’s my wife’s dahlia nursery.” He described himself as “the sort-ofassistant dahlia grower in the family. I’m the tag maker, soil mixer, and rebar stake maker.”
That was the first time I heard rebar mentioned in recent conversations with three local dahlia gardeners – Koons, Stan Hadley of Northfield and Dr. David Sales of Northbrook. Like the CSDS motto, all three are “basically crazy about dahlias.” And like more than half of the society’s membership, they are men. Dr. Sales explained that he learned about dahlias from Frank Campise, a longtime CSDS member whom he described as
“the Johnny dahlia seed of the area.” At the time, Dr. Sales knew nothing about dahlias. “Frank mentioned that he was retired, and when I asked him how he kept busy, he said he gardened. As soon as I expressed interest, he became animated and said I ‘MUST grow dahlias! They are the flowers that men grow’.” Dr. Sales, who has grown more than 130 dahlia varieties, said he hasn’t figured out why men like to grow dahlias, but he suspects
it is because there is a fair amount of physical labor, including propagation, staking and planting. “These are not delicate little flowers,” he said. Back to rebar: Many gardeners stake dahlias with the steel tension device that is normally used in concrete and masonry construction. Some flowers reach 16 inches in diameter, hence the phrase “dinner plate flower.” I asked the gardeners what else they love about dahlias. “Dahlias seem to be the easiest large flower that you can grow anywhere that provide such a variety of colors, sizes and different forms,” said Hadley, a member of CSDS for some 20 years who is currently on the Board of Directors. “Given as gifts, the cut flowers last for quite a while in a vase, and also have a relatively long blooming season.” The gardeners also admitted to loving the “wow factor” dahlias bring to their gardens. “People are constantly stopping and asking us about them,” said Koons. “We noticed a woman who was regularly taking photos. When we chatted with her, we learned she was sending a ‘good morning’ text to her daughter in Poland with the dahlia included.” Hadley recalled asking a young neighbor girl to help in the garden when the plants were in bloom. “When we returned, she said

she had brought over some of her friends to help, and they had a ‘nirvana’ feeling, spending the time amid such beauty and color,” he shared. The dahlia sale at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe is May

He said Regency is close to announcing additional retailers and restaurants. “There are going to be some really cool boutiques,” said Hendy. “There will be outside dining and a park.” Regency will build the retail part of the project and is partnering with Focus Development of Northfield to construct the apartments, according to Hendy. The dwelling units will be one-, two- and three-bedrooms in size renting from $1,600 to $3,000 a month, according to Focus CEO Tim Anderson. They will be between 750 and 1,450 square feet. “There are not a lot of opportunities for a walkable environment in the suburbs,” said Anderson. “People can walk out their door and walk to Whole Foods. It’s a unique opportunity.” Focus is also the developer of Kelmscott Park at the northwest corner of Laurel and Western Avenues in Lake Forest. Though the formal ground breaking was April 21, tractors started heavy earth moving operations on the former soybean fields shortly after closing the deal to acquire the land from the

Hendy said the project has been three years in the making since negotiations began to purchase the approximately 54-acre tract and get all local, county and state approvals. One of the things that drew REI to the center was access to
the Des Plaines River Trail near the eastern boundary of the property, according to Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawler, who participated in the ceremonies. “They want to offer canoe and kayak classes there,” said Lawler referring to REI. “This will provide better access to the Des Plaines River Trail.”
Lawler said there will be a grade crossing on Highway 60 with a stop light controlling traffic from the a driveway of Mellody Farm and a shopping center to the south on the other side of the road. Hendy said each time a lease is signed and a new tenant secured it will be announced on the center’s Facebook page.

MRW plans hands-on program BY KEMMIE ORQUIZ
T
he Goldstein family has inspired supporters of the Myra Rubenstein Weis (MRW ) Health Resource Center for more than two decades to promote health education and provide support for some of the communities’ most vulnerable members, cancer survivors. MRW Founders Dr. Paul Goldstein and Eileen Rubenstein Goldstein, sister of the late Myra Rubenstein Weis who passed of breast cancer, continue to work closely with NorthShore University HealthSystem on initiatives started over 21 years ago, including the Living in the Future (LIFE) Cancer Survivorship Program, while also expanding and introducing new programs to area high school students. “This new program focuses on personalized medicine and educating the younger generation on
genomics and being proactive about their health,” says Dr. Paul Goldstein. This new hands-on program also encourages younger generations to discover the science behind personalized medicine and genomics. Students have the opportunity to visit NorthShore Evanston Hospital’s state-of-theart lab and work directly with medical experts to further understand what a career in the field looks like. A breast cancer survivor and LIFE program patient, Helen Hackett expresses her gratitude for the support MRW has provided, as the first patient at NorthShore Highland Park Hospital to utilize the LIFE program, including the MRW Survivorship 101 seminars, more than 10 years ago. Helen is hopeful that future generations will continue to view cancer as more than a terminal illness. Helen was shocked by the
response her young son had to her somber news years ago, “Mom, did they catch it early? If so, you will be fine.” The exchange left Hackett with hope and an invigorated drive to support education for younger people. Dr. Katharine Yao will be honored for her work in surgical oncology during this year’s Myra Rubenstein Weis Health Resource Center Luncheon at Highland Park Country Club on May 3, celebrating the life of the organization’s namesake and largest fundraiser of the year. Dr. Michael Caplan serves as keynote speaker and will address the latest advances in personalized medicine at NorthShore University HealthSystem. both restaurants, with updated menus, plus a new rooftop space. Lulu’s and Taco Diablo share a kitchen, but each has its own separate chefs and cooking lines, while Five & Dime has its own kitchen upstairs. A shared vestibule has two entrances — one to Lulu’s and the other to Taco Diablo — each with
its own distinct atmosphere. Above Taco Diablo’s expansive bar is a sign made by Kelch’s sister that reads “Hell Is Empty … All The Devils Are Here.” Decorated with reclaimed dark wood, the restaurant has ample seating at the bar and at booths and tables, while colorful artwork adorns the walls by artists from across the country
and Mexico. While Lulu’s also includes reclaimed wood, the decor is light and bright with blond-colored wood and a large Buddha cheerfully greeting patrons. The space also has a bar — although smaller than neighboring Taco Diablo — as well as plenty of tables and booths for seating. Fans of Lulu’s will be pleased to know that Kelch kept detailed records. He scoured his computer orders to discern what were the most popular dishes at the restaurant, and he kept those customer favorites, such as the ginger chicken salad and the bento box. But he has also introduced new items, such as a Korean bibimbap dish that is proving to be a customer favorite. “People’s food tastes have changed dramatically and have gotten so much better. We want to update over time (but) we’ll take that slowly,” Kelch said. Taco Diablo is very similar to the original restaurant. In fact, even the restaurant’s dimensions and square footage are exactly the same. Everything is made fresh and on site. All of the meats are
braised in house-made stocks, served with traditional moles and fresh salsas. While all of the restaurant’s dozen or so tacos are popular, Kelch said the carnitas, lamb, and pork belly are standouts, as well as the red snapper and spicy grilled shrimp tacos. Above the two restaurants is the rooftop bar and lounge Five & Dime, where patrons can order food and drink at the indoor bar, or in warmer months head outside to the expansive patio. Another room called the “shed” has pingpong tables and games. Five & Dime is flexible by design, so it can be used for private gatherings as well. While Kelch admits that the fire at Taco Diablo left him feeling destitute and overwhelmed, he has renewed optimism for this new venture. “It is wonderful. The community has come back and supported us. It is fantastic,” Kelch said. The restaurants are located at 1026 Davis Street. T
he top priority in Gwen Walker’s life is family, followed closely by … family. No. 3? See the first two priorities. Walker — a senior co-captain and center-back on Lake Forest High School’s soccer team — considered DePaul University and the University of Cincinnati for her next stop along the academic/ soccer path. Poor Cincy. It had to go up against DePaul, a school with a player named Adrian Walker on its women’s soccer team. Adrian, also a defender, is Gwen’s big sister. Adrian and Gwen also happen to be best friends. DePaul won Gwen’s heart. “That was the clincher, the opportunity to play college soccer with my sister for three seasons,” says Gwen Walker, an all-sectional (honorable mention) and allNorth Suburban Conference player for the Scouts last spring and one of Adrian’s teammates for two seasons at LFHS. “A lot of people,” she adds, “think we’re close because of soccer. But we were close, super close, before we played soccer together, always looking out for each other and making sure the other was OK.” The difference between the sibs? “I’m organized; Adrian is not,” Gwen claims. The 5-foot-4 Gwen Walker is in charge of organizing Lake Forest’s back line in matches this spring. She even got to do that on her future home pitch — LF lost 4-3 on penalty kicks to St. Charles North in the final of the PepsiCo Showdown at DePaul’s Wish Field in Lincoln Park on April 23. right thing to do.” Nothing went wrong for Adrian and the rest of Stuckslager’s crew in ’14. They returned home with the Class 2A state championship trophy. Now in her third varsity season, Gwen Walker found herself on a pitch with six LFHS starting freshmen in a match against a 9-1 Warren team on April 20. Lake Forest lost 2-1 in Gurnee; the Scouts’ goal was of the “Did you see that?” variety. A slow-moving Blue Devils back pass, delivered from about 30 yards out, scooted underneath the left foot of Warren’s goalkeeper and traveled some 10 more yards. The ball ended up in the goal, stunning everybody. Scouts senior midfielder Delaney Williams got credit for the tally. “They’re talented, and they deserve to start,” Walker says of the freshmen — goalie Sophia DiVagno, defenders Ella Marquart and Nicole Doucette and midfielders Alyssa Marquis, Ingrid Falls and Julia Loeger. (Freshman midfielder Sarah Bires also made the varsity.) “They’ve worked hard to get to this level,” she adds. “I don’t look at our freshmen as freshmen. I look at them as players, like I do when I look at our seniors and everybody else on this team.” Not everybody sees hugs from Walker coming. That’s because she often likes to embrace friends and family members from behind. “They’re fun attacks; they’re random,” says the team’s other co-captain, senior defender Hannah Bell. “Gwen is the heart and soul of our team, no question. Her voice when we play, it’s prominent, and she’s not afraid to run up and down the field to make an impact. Her big thing, what she likes to tell me, is, ‘Do your best.’ ” Stuckslager, for one, feels for opponents who try, in vain, to reduce Walker to that of an nonimpact player. Walker erases threats at one end of the pitch and booms dangerous free kicks at the other end. “The look she plays with is one that says, ‘I mean business,’ ” Stuckslager says. “That look, plus the way she carries herself … you don’t want to mess with her. I wouldn’t want to play against her. Her maturity as a player and as a leader these last couple of seasons has been important for us, especially this year with the number of freshmen we have.” Imagine Gwen Walker’s look next fall, when she’ll get to practice with Adrian Walker for the first time as a DePaul freshman. It’ll be a softer one. Reunions tend to melt expressions. Notable: Senior Delaney Williams and freshmen Julia Loeger and Ingrid Falls scored Lake Forest High School’s goals in the 4-3 loss (penalty kicks) to St. Charles North in the PepsiCo Showdown final at DePaul University on April 23. The assists came from freshman Nicole Doucette, senior Gwen Walker and Williams. Lake Forest (5-3) tied it at 3-3 with two minutes left in the second half. St. Charles North improved to 9-0-1. … Lake Forest’s 2-1 loss to host Warren on April 20 was a rematch of LF’s 1-0 defeat of Warren in a PepsiCo Showdown quarterfinal on April 13. Highland Park senior star continues to drum up eye-popping stats BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
E
llen Goldsher pitched the softballs. Her daughter, Jenny, hit them. Again and again and again and ... “When I was younger, I dragged my mom to Fink Park and made her stand behind a screen and pitch BP to me from eight feet away,” recalls Highland Park High School senior catcher Jenny Goldsher. “My mom had never played softball, but that didn’t stop her from being there for me and supporting me. “I enjoyed our time together at the park. My mom had a good time, too.” But most area pitchers would rather be anywhere but inside a pitcher’s circle when Goldsher — a left-handed hitter who will continue to play softball at Rollins College in Winter Haven, Florida — nears the batter’s box as the No. 3 hitter in the Giants’ batting order. Through 11 games this spring, the captain and fourth-year varsity starter was hitting .590 overall and an astounding .818 in four Central Suburban League North games. Goldsher’s sizzling stick would fit right in with a roomful of steam pipes. “We depend on her — on her hitting, on her fielding, on her leadership and on her communication skills,” says Giants junior center fielder Tessa Bojan. “She’s

strong at the plate. Strong. You’re always going to get a ton of energy from Jenny.” Goldsher’s verve abounded in an 11-5 loss to visiting Maine East on April 19, which, weather-wise, felt like an ideal day to battle in a
Turkey Bowl football game on Thanksgiving. She went 4-for-4 at the plate — all singles, all hit sharply up the middle — stole two bases, scored two runs, nailed a base runner attempting to steal second and threw out another Blue
Demon who had wandered off second base. The 2016 all-CSL North player and Lake County Liberty club softball member had walked once and doubled twice in a loss to Deerfield earlier in the week.
“She loves the game, and she’s a student of the game,” says Highland Park softball coach Lydia Gonzalez of Goldsher, who batted .480 as a freshman, .325 as a sophomore and .487 last spring. “Jenny asks a lot of good questions, is self-reflective. She continues to grow as a player, with her skills and abilities, and she’s at that point in her career where we consider her a coach on the field. “She’s had quite an impact,” the coach adds. Goldsher strikes snare drums as cleanly as she drives pitched softballs. A member of the school’s marching band, as well as a percussionist since the fifth grade, Goldsher wrote the music to which she and her percussion ensemble cohorts performed at the school’s dance concert last month. Buckets served as makeshift drums, and garbage-can lids doubled as cymbals on that night. “Being involved in band has been one of the best experiences in my life,” says Goldsher, who earned a varsity basketball letter in each of the past two winters. “I was able to go to Italy because of my commitment to band.” Her next visit to another country will be her maiden one to Israel — all because of softball. Israel hosts the quadrennial Maccabiah Games July 5-17, when Goldsher will don Team USA threads for the women’s softball
team. All but one of the selectees are either former or current college softball players. “It’s unbelievable, getting the chance to represent the United States in a competition like that, to play my favorite sport with and against older, high-level players,” says Goldsher, whose brother, Jay, is a junior pitcher at Grinnell College in Iowa who throws right and bats left — just like li’l sis. Jenny Goldsher is minutes removed from a 4-for-4, errorless game. Perfect with the helmet on, perfect with the mask on. But she knows she never would have been able to grow — as a player and as a person — without the 0-for days at the plate and the tough days behind the plate. “Softball teaches you how to cope with failure,” Goldsher says. “You’re never going to enjoy success each time you bat. You have to stay mentally tough and have that ‘OK, next time, next play’ mentality. Composure is everything.” Notable: Highland Park High School’s rally fell short in a 5-4 softball loss to visiting Glenbrook North on April 20. Natalie Abreu, Hannah Matthews, Jenny Goldsher (hit), Tessa Bojan (hit), Devin Davidson (hit) and Campbell Flower (hit) all reached base for the Giants (3-8, 0-4) in the bottom of the seventh inning.

No. 4 hitter Horvitz continues to be an impressive power bat for New Trier baseball team BY KEVIN REITERMAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
O
pposing pitchers aren’t the only ones who spring into alert mode, when hardhitting catcher Dylan Horvitz strolls to the batter’s box. Teammate Francis Fay also starts to stir — in the dugout. Stretch out your legs, fast guy. Get ready. It’s “go time.” Fay, a star running back for the New Trier in the fall, who recently committed to play football at Denison University, has been Horvitz’s very own personal courtesy runner this spring. And, it’s become a full-time gig for the speedster. Horvitz has 17 hits to go along with 11 walks for an on-base percentage of .554. Thus, Fay has scored 13 runs in the team’s first 16 games to go along with seven steals. Hitting in the cleanup spot in New Trier’s batting order, the right-handed swinging Horvitz is pounding the ball all over the park these days. He went 2-for-4 with a walk in the Trevians’ wild and woolly 18-11 victory over host Evanston on April 20 at Northwestern University’s Miller Park. He’s developed into an ideal No. 4 hitter — and the 6-foot-2, 195-pounder unquestionably looks the part. “Dylan has power, and he puts the ball in play. He’s especially become a good two-strike hitter,” said New Trier head coach Mike Napoleon. “He look likes a No. 4 hitter. He puts the fear factor into [opposing] pitchers.” Two days earlier, in another come-from-behind win over visiting Evanston, a 7-6 decision, Horvitz smacked a two-run home run over the left-field fence at Duke Childs Field. After 16 starts, Horvitz’s stats are big and burly. He’s hitting .436 and leads the team in doubles (4), home runs (2) and runs batted in (19). His OPS (on-base plus slugging) is a galactic 1.246. “He’s big, he’s strong and he hits bombs,” said NT junior first baseman Anthony Calarco. “He’s got so much power. He’ll hit what you think is a popup, but then it will just carry and carry.” In the 18-11 win over Evanston, Horvitz’s big hit of the day came in the fourth inning, when

he hammered a two-run double down the left-field line. His big “run” of the game happened in the fourth inning, when he legged out a hit. A day earlier, the athletic Horvitz, who also played varsity basketball at the school, beat out a two-out, bases-loaded infield hit in an 8-0 win over host Deerfield. It turned into a rare two-RBI infield hit, thanks to some great hustle by teammate Will McNulty, who never stopped running and scored from second base. Legging out hits? Usually, that’s not in a catcher’s job description. But framing pitches is, and Horvitz has become very profi-
cient at it. The moment of truth in the April 18 win over Evanston came in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out and the count full and the bases loaded and the game tied 8-8, New Trier reliever Spencer Beacom fanned Evanston standout Chris Brown on a borderline called third strike. “That was the turning point of the game,” said Horvitz, who barely moved his mitt on the decisive third strike. “There was so much leading up to that situation.” And, there was plenty of educated guessing going on. Earlier in the at-bat, Beacom dropped in
a curve ball to make it a 2-2 count. Then, he missed on a fastball to make the count full. So … what now? “Coach Klipowicz called it,” said Horvitz, referring to veteran pitching coach Scott Klipowicz. “I thought maybe we would come back with the curve, and if it missed, it still would limit the damage.” Instead, Klipowicz went big and bold. Throw the hard one. Come with the express. The pitch turned into the game’s “frozen moment”, when Beacom’s fastball — at the knees and on the outside corner — froze the bearded Brown.
“Coach Klipowicz knows exactly what he’s doing,” Horvitz said. The inning ended one batter latter on a groundout to second. “There was so much riding on that pitch [to Brown] at that time,” said Horvitz. “Striking him out put the momentum back on our side.” Two innings later, the Trevians (12-3, 5-0 after the team’s 8-2 win over visiting Barrington on April 22) busted open the game with a 10-run seventh inning. “It was pretty incredible to win this game,” said Horvitz, aware that his squad was down by five runs, 7-2, after three innings.
“Nothing better. We’re doing something different every game. We’re proving that we can beat you in a bunch of different ways.” Leads against New Trier aren’t safe. “Even when we were down five runs, we knew it was still anyone’s game,” said Napoleon. Napoleon admitted that he did do a couple of double takes in the game at Miller Park. Horvitz took a called third strike — twice. “The kid can [really] hit,” the veteran NT coach, who now has compiled 823 career wins. “What surprised me is that he struck out.” “Getting punched out a couple of times is never good, especially when you are going well,” said Horvitz. “Not good. I took two perfect pitches.” Horvitz, actually, has been terrorizing varsity pitchers for two years. Last year, he stepped up big during the postseason — had the game-winning hit against Notre Dame 2-1 in the sectional semifinal and went yard in a 12-6 win over Oak Park-River Forest in the sectional final — and wound up hitting .291 with four home runs, eight doubles and 34 RBIs. His OPS was 1.028. Besides having the look of a No. 4 hitter, it’s not a stretch to imagine Horvitz playing at the college level. His bat would play. Horvitz, however, already has his future plans set. He’ll study business at the Indiana University. Notable: The other offensive stat leaders for New Trier include Kevin Donahue (.447 batting average, 10 doubles, 11 RBIs, 22 runs, 1.284 OPS), Cam Redding (.380 BA, 15 RBIs, 13 runs), Anthony Calarco (.325 BA, .533 on-base percentage, 7 doubles, 1.033 OPS), Patrick Jodloman (.333 BA, 10 RBIs) and Sean Douaire (.312 BA, 10 runs). … In the 18-11 win over Evanston, Calarco, a Northwestern commit, went 4-for-4 with four doubles and three RBIs. Redding also went 4-for-4 with two doubles. Donahue (2-for-4) had a threerun triple in the seventh. Jodloman (2-for-4) drove in three runs.

Ad-VANCE-ing HIS GAME Eye-catching skill set allows LA standout to further his career behind the plate BY KEVIN REITERMAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

everal times a game — usually on the first pitch of an inning — Brian Vance drops to the ground like someone just yanked a folding chair from underneath him. Take me out to the sprawl game. Similar to a hockey goaltender making a butterfly save, the Loyola Academy senior catcher will, on occasion, collapse and unfold his body in a very unconventional stance. Somehow — and kids, don’t try this in your backyard or anywhere else at home — Vance puts his right leg completely on the ground and points it towards the rightfield foul pole, while he bends his left leg at the knee and angles it back toward the home-plate umpire. Accordions should be so flexible. Tony Pena, a former flamboyant major league backstop, caught this way — on occasion — for 19 major league seasons with the Pirates, Cardinals, Red Sox, Indians, White Sox and Astros. Then, he became a big league manager for another 483 games. “I’m [actually] comfortable in that position,” said Vance, as pliant as a tree branch swaying in the breeze. “I’m blessed to be so flexible.” He’s Elastic Man. “Insanely flexible,” noted his best friend and LA’s ace hurler, Rich Campbell. “I’ve seen him jump and do splits in mid-air.” Vance takes creativity in catching to a new level. But there’s a method to his “fadness”. “When pitchers see me there, they know that I want the ball down,” he said. Vance, a take-charge guy, has earned the right to be innovative and groundbreaking. He’s elevated his game this spring. He’s having an eye-catching season for the 15-4 Ramblers. With the glove. With the arm. And with the bat. Put it all together and you are pretty much assured of getting rave reviews from your head coach. “There’s not a better catcher in the state,” said LA head coach Nick Bridich. The LA coach certainly wouldn’t get an argument from a

certain coaching staff from Philly. In October, the 5-foot-11, 180-pound Vance attended a baseball camp at St. Joseph’s University in the City of Brotherly Love. Do you believe in love at first site? Vance does — now. Three days after the camp, Vance received a phone call from Ryan Wheeler, an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at St. Joseph’s. “He asked me if I had a moment to talk,” Vance recalled. Moments later, Vance received an offer to catch at the Division I level. The call, according to Vance, came out … from beyond the backstop. He had no clue. “I had no idea that they’d being calling me,” said Vance, who attended several other camps in the
fall. “I really didn’t think anything like this would happen.” Thanks, Mom. “I didn’t even want to go to the camp,” he admitted. “My mom [Maureen] forced me to go.” Playing baseball at a high level is a perfect path for a player like Vance. He’s all things catcher. Vance constantly studies the guys who look good in masks. MLB and elsewhere. “I’m always watching catchers,” he said. “I try to take in as much as I can — even from guys that I play against. “I’m not comparing myself to others. I’m just trying to learn as much as I can.” Former Cubs catcher David Ross might be his all-time favorite receiver, but (sorry about this Cub fans) Vance pretty much is a carbon copy of St. Louis Car-
dinals manager Mike Matheny, a former Gold Glove catcher. The good people of St. Louis no doubt would see an eerie resemblance. Vance looks like Matheny. Same build, same long, wavy dark hair. He even talks like the St. Louis skipper. Thoughtful, insightful. A future manager? Could be. “Brian is a extremely mature,” said Bridich. “And he’s confident. He’s very comfortable in his own skin.” “I’d say that’s about right,” said Campbell. “His charisma is second to none. A great leader.” A former pitcher, Vance’s arm and athleticism can control the opposition’s running game. So, base runners be warned. “With him back there, you really don’t have to worry about the other team stealing bags on
you,” said Campbell. “In fact, it’s nice when they’re dumb enough to try.” That confidence thing also shows up when Vance digs in at the plate. “His on-base percentage (.521) has been unreal this season,” said the LA coach, noting that Vance has drawn a team-high 16 walks. And Vance, who is hitting .319 with 17 runs and a .947 OPS (on base plus slugging), is a quality at-bat ready to happen. Thus, he fits in nicely in the second slot of LA’s batting order. “He sees a ton of pitches. He [has developed] into a very good No. 2 hitter,” Bridich said. Vance showed that on April 22 in a 16-1 setback to visiting Brother Rice. He singled to left in his first at-bat and doubled to right in his final at-bat. “He faces one of the best arms
in the state [in Ryan Kutt], and he goes 2-for-3,” said Bridich. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Kutt, an Illinois recruit, throws in the mid-80s with a wicked slider. “The better the competition, the better he plays,” Bridich said. Notable: Currently, the leading hitters for the Ramblers are Jason Vrbancic (.440 batting average, 12 runs, 17 RBIs, 1.081 OPS), Ryan Lin-Peistrup (.379 BA, 23 runs, 21 RBIs, .981 OPS), Henry Haracz (.350 BA, 16 RBIs, .958 OPB), Drew Bartholow (.345 BA, 23 runs, 12 RBIs, 2 home runs, .962 OPB), Will Jackson (.343 BA,), Trey Torain (.340 BA, 4 home runs, 20 runs, 21 RBIs, 1.181 OPS) and Jack Blindt (.320 BA, 16 runs). … The top pitchers have been Rich Campbell (2-2, 1.33 ERA) and PJ McKermitt (3-1, 1.42 ERA).

Retired audiologist insists singing twins’ messages must be heard — loudly and clearly

A
grandmother takes her two granddaughters to a concert in January. They sit in the third row of a concert hall. The grandmother had read all about the night’s singing duo in the “Things To Do This weekend” section in a Chicago newspaper. The grandkids, ages 9 and 12? “One of them,” recalls the grandmother, Linda Remensnyder of Lake Forest, “looks at me and says, ‘Grandma, we’ve never heard of them.’ ” The duo of Carly and Martina — 15-year-old twins from Glencoe who were already in their third year as a music act — takes the stage at the Music Institute of Chicago’s Nicholas Hall in Evanston. The Spiro sisters’ songs aren’t just catchy, foot-tapping tunes; they’re also meaningful, with inspiring anti-bullying messages and self-esteem-boosting lyrics. Carly and Martina, former New Trier High School students, wrote the song, “Make Me Happy,” after being bullied at school as 13-year-olds. “Incredible performers,” Remensnyder says of the siblings, whose loyal fan base reached an international level right around the time they chose the homeschool route. “Their harmonizing was fabulous, as soon as they started to sing. I looked at my granddaughters, and they were enthralled.” Remensnyder, 69, was moved. The very first Doctor of Audiology in Illinois wanted hundreds of other children of all ages to hear Carly and Martina in concert. Remensnyder’s wheels turned after that concert, going from Ferris-wheel speed to Indy500-wheel speed in no time. She
called Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest to ask about the availability of its John & Nancy Hughes Theater; she contacted local principals and teachers to collect their thoughts about her idea; she got in touch with the Music Institute president, who got in touch with the talented twins; she thought it would make perfect sense to have the proposed concert’s proceeds benefit a non-profit organization. Her “Things To Do” list got smaller and smaller. The big announcement, made official last month: Carly and Martina will perform at Gorton on May 31, from 7-8:30 p.m. Tickets ($10 per person, or $8 per person in groups of 10 or more) will be available at the door or can be purchased at SeeCarlyandMartina.eventbrite.com. Proceeds have been earmarked for LEAD, a non-profit drug prevention agency based in Lake Forest that works with parents and students to create a healthy environment and promote healthy decision-making. “I’m a retiree, and I’m switching gears,” says Remensnyder, who sold her private practice in 2012, a year after receiving the Presidential Award from the Americ a n Academy of Audiology for her tireless efforts in placing hearing loops in all kinds of venues in Illinois. “Everyone,” she adds, “is concerned about children navigating the new and challenging social landscape. Carly and Martina’s music successfully addresses not only bullying but also self-esteem, school drama and first love. They
reach their target audience far better than teachers or parents ever can.” Remensnyder’s audience of one — husband Larry, after both had graduated from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb — was sitting at the couple’s home in Chicago when she informed him of her interest in earning a master’s degree at NIU in the early 1970s. “That class was fabulous,” says Remensnyder, a mother of two (Scott and Cynthia) and a voracious reader who likes to start seizing her days at 4:30 a.m. “What attracted me to the field right away was the treatment involved — patients receive it and get immediate results, unlike physical therapy, which requires smaller steps and takes longer to complete. The thought of helping somebody with diminished hearing and moving on to the next [patient] excited me.” Remensnyder’s granddaughters — Cynthia Leahy’s daughters — live seven minutes from her in Lake Forest. They attend different schools. One of the highlights of the proud grandmother’s day each weekday is driving one or the other to school. “You’d be amazed how much you can learn about today’s children while talking with them in a car,” Remensnyder says. “I find out so much about them every week. I love to learn; I have to be constantly learning. “One of my granddaughters, on the way to school, sang a song she had heard at the Carly and Martina concert. The lyrics were uplifting, inspiring. It was a wonderful way for her to get ready for her day.” The Carly and Martina concert at Gorton Community Center’s John & Nancy Hughes Theater on May 31 is appropriate for students in third grade through 12th grade.
