The North Shore Art League’s sixth annual Art in the Village event is turning out to be a true family affair. This weekend’s juried fine arts show—running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, and Sunday, June 23 in Hubbard Woods Park in Winnetka—includes works by a well-known Ohio family of artists. Held in the heart of the vibrant Hubbard Woods Design & Dine District, the show will be going on at the same time as the Village of Winnetka Music Fest. A complimentary trolley service (sponsored by Byline Bank) between the two events on Saturday make it a fun day out for everyone. Admission and parking are free. Organizers say this high-quality outdoor fine art experience is a testament to North Shore Art League’s rich 95-year history in the village. With more than 70 booths featuring painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, photography, digital art, handmade artist-designed jewelry, and printmaking, this promises to be a memorable show. PINT SIZED GARDENERS CHALET’S SPROUTS PROGRAM INTRODUCES CHILDREN TO THE MAGIC OF NATURE. BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

It’s been raining all day, but inside the learning center upstairs at Chalet in Wilmette, a paper plate sunshine smiles down on a group of wiggly children. Gathered in a circle around Jean Foley, who leads the Chalet Sprouts program one Saturday each month, the kids can’t wait to touch and smell the herb and vegetable plants arranged before them. “Touch this one,” she says, inviting small hands to stroke the leaves of a yellowblossomed squash seedling. “See how fuzzy they are?” “Oh yes!” one little girl exclaims. “They feel just like Pop Pop’s whiskers!” “And who remembers what this herb is called?” Foley continues, holding up a fragrant rosemary plant. Questions about each of the herbs are quickly answered by the group, who’ve retained a surprising amount of the information Foley has gently guided them through since the classes started in March. Each with a different nature theme, hands-on activities, story time, and craft to make and bring home, Sprouts classes have each filled to near capacity. The success of the pilot season has prompted Chalet to consider expanding the program to include middle school classes as well. “We always wanted to add more children’s programming to our offerings at the learning center,” says Carleigh Thalmann, marketing specialist for the company her ancestors founded a century ago. “Most of the classes we’ve done for the last 50 years have been designed for adults. But we had had requests for fun, kid-shaped offerings with a horticultural focus, and when Jean joined our staff, we thought now was the time to kick this off.” Foley, who has a degree in horticulture production and landscape design, also came Continued on PG 10

The opportunity to teach children about plants, nature, and the environment is the perfect marriage of her skills. “I love doing this,” says Foley. “The excitement the children have about learning and sharing what they already know about the wonder of nature is infectious. And the pride they have at making something with their own hands is also wonderful to see.” Because each child learns differently, Foley has been careful to include interactive object lessons in her teaching, plus story times that include brightly illustrated children’s books, hands-on crafts that apply what the children learn, and a walk through Chalet’s gardens so the children can experience the colors and sensory thrill of nature outdoors. Each child receives a “welcome” gift bag, with a mini watering can, gardening gloves, and wind-up butterfly. Children can sign up to attend as many sessions as they like (each is $10) but kids who attend the full roster through December will get special recognition at the end of the year. This month’s session, “Digging with Dad,” has a gardening focus. The story, based on Lois Ehlert’s Growing Vegetable Soup book, teaches about vegetables and how they grow. After the story is finished, Foley teaches the children about the Native American ingenuity of growing a tall corn or a sunflower plant, with climbing beans around it, and squash plants at the base to discourage weed growth. Each child clamors for the chance to take turns being the sunflower, while others wrap green paper stream-

ers (representing bean tendrils) around the flower stalk, and still others plant paper squash plants at the base. Later, the kids fill mini compostable planters with soil, plant seeds in them, and then scamper out for a walk in the edible section of Chalet’s gardens (where vegetables and herbs are sold). “They really enjoy the classes,” says Foley, talking about previous sessions such as the Mother’s Day “Bloom Boom!” and upcoming offerings including bee-focused “The Buzz on Pollinators,” and “Summer Sun”—which will focus on how plants use the sun’s light to produce oxygen and food,

and give kids the chance to make their own sun catchers. “There is so much potential with this. From Ohio, the talented Stretar family will again be present to exhibit their beautiful works—father Gary and his two sons, Anthony and Luke. While these three artists share some similarities in style, they each have their own perspective and focus. Gary’s landscapes (garystretar.com) evoke a serene mood using deep, rich colors. These large-scale, warm oil paintings with clean lines and sparkling realism

draw the eye in again and again. Conservative enough to fit the most classic decor yet intriguing enough to appeal to more modern tastes, they

must be seen in person to fully appreciate. Also look for nationally recognized abstract artist Glenna Adkins (glennaadkins. com) from Cincinnati. Her works hang in galleries and collections across the country and in Europe. Her influences include modern design and color harmony as well as architecture, light, and pattern. She uses a unique mixed media technique that involves

a heavy base layer with acrylic paint. Then she adds layers of soft pastel and sometimes graphite, pen, and ink. The use of this mixed media allows flexibility with each piece. Daniel Jara, originally from Peru, will also be at the fair. He has no formal art training and gathered most of his techniques by sharing ideas with street artisans while living on the road and selling his work in plazas throughout South America. HOT STUFF CELEBRATE HIGHWOOD’S INFERNO FEST MAKES A SPICY RETURN. EDITED BY SHERRY THOMAS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Summer is finally here and the City of Highwood is getting fired up. Celebrate Highwood’s Inferno Fest comes to Everts Park on Wednesday, June 26 with some of the North Shore’s spiciest foods and beverages. The fun, fiery festival will feature such spectacular creations as spicy pasta dishes, peppery nuts and popcorn, piquant tacos and salsa, hot wings, and other daring dishes to taste. Live music by Derrick Procell and the Redeemers is sure to create an entertaining atmosphere while visitors sample the hottest foods on the North Shore. For the most fearless foodies eager to show off their spice tolerance, there’s even an Inferno Fest Eating Contest. Open to adults 18 years and older, the free competition starts at 8 p.m. at the gazebo. The person who can eat the most La Casa de Isaac “hot taquitos” without calling for a Kefir Cool Down wins a $200 gift card. A competition truly meant only for those with iron stomachs, organizers say that some who dared

enter in the past were never the same again. (Note that all brave competitors are required to complete and sign a participation waiver prior to the contest.) “Inferno Fest will be a test of taste buds and endurance for all those who dare to compete,” says Eric Falberg, president of Celebrate Highwood and a Highwood Alderman. Thankfully, Kefir Kids will be on hand to rescue sweltering mouths with Kefir non-dairy smoothies to cool down their palates after the competition. For those not in the know, milk interacts with spices to cool taste buds in a way that water or soda cannot. Dubbed as the “the champagne of dairy,” Lifeway Kefir will be on site with cool down samples to share with anyone who is coming out to Inferno Fest. Don’t like spicy food at all? Never fear. The event happens to be taking place in conjunction with all the usual vendors at the weekly Highwood Evening Gourmet Market so there’s sure to be something for every taste. CITIZEN K-9 LAKE FOREST POLICE DEPARTMENT ADDS ITS FIRST CANINE OFFICER. BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

The newest member of the Lake Forest Police Department (LFPD) has big brown eyes, a winning grin, and an endearing habit of cocking his head to one side when listening intently. He’s been patrolling for less than a month, but is already an expert at tracking and searching, trained to locate missing persons and suspects who have fled crime scenes. He possesses a long list of additional skills such as narcotic detection and missing-evidence location. And he likes to have his throat scratched. Meet Chase, the police dog. Together with canine handler Mike Hughes, the two represent the LFPD’s new canine patrol squad. Like LFPD’s other patrol officers, Chase and Hughes head out every day, answering calls and patrolling the streets. But the squad car in which they travel, emblazoned with a big K-9, is built with a special compartment for Chase and hightech equipment to aid in the team’s specialized skills. And at the end their shift, Chase and Mike head home together—on alert 24/7 should an emergency arise requiring their assistance when they are off-duty. “There are many incidents where having a canine on the police force is extremely helpful— everything from a situation where a young child or a person with Alzheimer’s disease has wandered off and gotten lost in a wooded area or ravine to situations where a suspect has fled the scene of a crime and a large area needs to be searched,” says Deputy Chief of Police Robert Copeland. “A dog is so much quicker and more efficient at searching and tracking than a person. And the dogs that make the canine patrol cut

are bred for their excellent sense of smell and ability to obey commands.” Copeland says there have been several incidents where a burglary was in progress, and when LFPD arrived at the scene of the crime, they could see where people had exited the house right after they got there.

“If we had had a canine in those moments, tracking down and apprehending the suspects could have happened much faster,” he adds. But while the benefits to having a canine are great, the cost and commitment are also substantial. Including the dog itself, canine patrol car and equipment, initial and ongoing training for the dog and handler, plus ancillary fees, the total costs add up to $90,000. “We thought the addition of a canine to the LFPD would be a wonderful idea,” says Steven Esposito, a founding member of the Lake Forest Police Foundation (LFPF). “There is a need in the community for the services a police dog provides. If he helps track down one criminal, or saves one child, it will be well worth it. We could not have added Chase to the department without the generous support of the Lake Forest community to help us fund this mission.” In addition to patrolling Lake Forest, Chase will be available to other police departments who do not have a dog, or may need extra assistance. At the same time, having Chase opens new avenues for LFPD community engagement. “Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, demonstrations at schools, events like our Fourth of July celebrations” Copeland explains as examples. “We are even having cards—like baseball cards—made with Chase’s picture on them.” To make it all possible, funds raised by the LFPF paid for the canine squad car and equipment. The purchase of Chase and the cost of his training was funded through a generous contribution from the Havey Family and a grant LFPD obtained from the DAS Charitable Fund of Lake County. To find the right handler for the dog, LFPD didn’t have to look far. Although several officers interviewed for the position, Mike Hughes, who

had been with LFPD for seven years, was the winning candidate. “It’s a young man’s game because you have to be fit, be able to run with the dog, and may have to track for many miles. The handler also needs to have been on the force for at least three to five years. Mike has all of that. Plus, he is a field training officer, defensive tactics instructor, and teaches in the Citizen’s Police Academy,” says Copeland, adding that of all the officers, Hughes seemed to want it most. “Each year on the write-in section of his evaluation form, Mike always wrote, ‘If there is ever an opportunity to be a canine handler, I would like to be considered’.” In fact, Hughes says beyond aspiring to be a policeman, the goal of becoming a dog handler started when he was a little boy. “I grew up near the TOPS Kennel facility where they train police dogs in Grayslake,” says Hughes. “When I was little, I loved to watch the dogs running up ladders and through tunnels on the obstacle course and watching trainers work with the dogs.” Then as a teen, Hughes worked in the kennels at TOPS. Now married with two young girls and a dog at home, bringing Chase into the family has been a natural transition. “Chase loves the girls and has adjusted very well,” says Hughes. “In addition to the work we will be doing on patrol, I’m really looking forward to bringing Chase out to schools and organizations in the area. Lucy in the sky New Trier grad Murray soared in two sports—and as a proud teammate.

attack—was the time she went full-blown “NASA” after a teammate’s goal this past spring. Murray’s celebratory liftoff in the regularseason game against reigning state champion Hinsdale Central High School on May 15 left quite an impression. “I’d never seen Lucy jump as high as she did on that day,” Collins recalls. “I’ll remember that for a while. And then, watching her come down and embrace that teammate [junior attack Annie Thompson], who had just scored, truly captured what she was all about for us: a player who always showed genuine enthusiasm for her teammates. “Lucy, the athlete,” the coach adds, “is tough, gritty, and determined. But there’s also a side of her that likes to have a good time in competition, especially following a teammate’s success in a game. She was focused. She had fun. Lucy had good balance.” Murray’s final two semesters at New Trier? Equally triumphant. The senior helped NT’s field hockey squad win the state championship in October and played a pivotal role in NT’s 12-4 defeat of host Hinsdale Central in the girls lacrosse state championship game on June 1. The latter title was the program’s first in 11 years. “It was a good year,” Murray, a Wilmette resident, understates. Murray tallied two goals in her final prep game,

effort—in New Trier’s 15-14 defeat of Glenbrook South High School in a state semifinal on May 31. Her leadership and positivity lifted the Trevians in the late stages of a tight contest with perennial power Loyola Academy earlier in the season. “Loyola,” Collins says, “had just scored to break a tie. But there was Lucy, shouting, ‘We’ve got this, we’ve got this, we’ve got this,’ to her teammates. We asked her to fulfill a lot of roles in her career, and she never failed to do so. She was a coach on the field for us her senior year, as well as the quarterback of our offense. Lucy did such a great job reading defenses and moving the ball for us.” NT’s reliable signal caller played hurt for most of her career. A stress fracture in her back sidelined her for six weeks in 2017. The injury lingered. And lingered some more. Countless appointments with a chiropractor during Murray’s senior season couldn’t keep her from pacing a 22-1-2 Trevians club in assists (65) and finishing second among teammates in goals (82) to junior middie Claudia Shevitz’s 94. “It helped, seeing a chiropractor,” says Murray, also a member of three lacrosse state runner-up teams and a field hockey state runner-up crew. “But the pain never went away. I tried to play without thinking about it. My goal this summer is to stabilize my core and get in the best shape possible before I head to college.” The Dartmouth College women’s lacrosse coach for the past three seasons, Danielle Spencer, chose to head west earlier this month. Why elite cyclist Rachel Wills of Wilmette wants to see more women on bikes BY MONICA KASS ROGERS ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Smiling and bright in a periwinkle blue T-shirt and jeans, Rachel Wills looks surprisingly fresh for someone who just finished the grueling 200-mile Dirty Kanza gravel bike race in Kansas the day before. But race she did, covering 200 miles on rough road through high temperatures in 14 1/2 hours, finishing before sundown—a personal goal. Currently racing with The Meteor // Intelligentsia, the only all-women’s gravel cycling team in the U.S., Wills has become an ambassador for women in bike racing—appearing and participating at competitions such as the upcoming Northwestern Medicine Lake Bluff Criterium on July 27, which is part of the Intelligentsia Cup, a ten-day series of bike races around the Chicago area. This year, the series includes eight criteriums and two road races as well as the Illinois State Road Racing Championships, making it one of the biggest race series in the country. Wills is optimistic that the sport will continue to evolve, giving women greater parity in an arena that has for decades been maledominated. “Traditionally, bike racing has been a maledominated sport, with participation numbers, team support, and in prize money. Race organizers are more actively reaching out to get women to participate, and parity is one of those hot topics. Equal race distances, racing opportunity, and yes, equal payouts are all important. The Intelligentsia Cup has stepped up and has equal payout at every venue and in the overall omnium for the pro fields, which is fantastic.” However, unlike tennis, basketball, or other team sports where there is a natural on-ramp to potential athletic careers through youth leagues and high school teams, bike racing lacks that infrastructure. “It’s more difficult for young people to learn about and train for bike racing because there are very few bike racing teams in college and even fewer in high school or junior high,” says Wills. But on the plus side, bike riding has a positive image with the potential to be a lifelong pursuit. For Wills, who grew up three and a half hours north of Minneapolis in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, camping trips to the North Woods with her outdoorsy family always included bikes. “We weren’t cyclists; we were bikers, who rode just for fun,” she says.

Her first bike was purple, with a matching umbrella, followed by a series of pink and purple Huffys and Schwinns. But when 10-year-old Wills saw a sparkly teal Schwinn in her hometown bike shop, pink went by the wayside. “I saved my allowance and Christmas and birthday money for three years to buy that sparkly teal bike,” Wills laughs. “It was a Schwinn Sidewinder and was the first of my bikes to have gears!” But Wills’ switch to competitive racing didn’t happen until several years later. A swimmer from the time she was 6 months old, Wills says she felt much more comfortable in the water and never thought she could be a “land” athlete. “I loved swimming competitively, which I did all of my life,” she says. Winning a local triathlon relay for three subsequent years with two friends who did the biking and running portions of the race (Wills did the swimming leg) plus, having a boyfriend who was a triathlete, opened Wills eyes to what being a multi-sport competitor could look like. After completing a business administration degree with specialization in marketing, recreation, and leisure services at the University of North Dakota where she was on a swim scholarship, Wills took a business job in Minneapolis for several years. “But corporate America wasn’t for me,” she recalls. Wills bought her first real road bike, moved to San Diego, and did her first triathlon one month later. Two years later, she did her first Ironman Triathlon and the following week, she was on a bike again, this time racing in her first criterium race. Called “crits” for short, these are highspeed races held on closed loop courses between .5 and 2 miles in length. Wills laughs as she says, “Yeah, that was probably a bad idea, but I was hooked! Going fast was fun!” As Wills’ skills in biking matured, she also went to professional bike-

fitting school—the skilled trade of fitting bikes to the people who are going to ride them. Now with Velosmith Bicycle Studio in Wilmette, Wills is one of the few female bike fitters in the country. She says she is passionate about fitting. “For me, it’s about the integrity of it, making sure a bike is fit perfectly for its rider. People don’t realize how crucial it is that they are fitted

to their bikes appropriately. It’s paramount— whether it’s a $1,000 bike, or a $12,000 bike, the fit is the most important thing. If the fit is wrong, riding will be uncomfortable and injuries can happen, making it unlikely that someone will persist with riding.” Wills’ relocation to the North Shore brought with it the invitation to be on the Chicago Women’s Elite Cycling team, and then The Meteor // Intelligentsia team, which gives her the opportunity to do crit racing, road racing (professional bike racing on paved roads), and gravel racing. Unlike crit and road races, gravel races are generally between 60 to 200 mile courses on rough terrain and require great endurance. Wills says being on The Meteor // Intelligentsia team has been empowering. “Being on the first all-women’s gravel racing team, we have been privileged to have a platform as role models to talk about the sport, and what cycling is doing for various communities. We are especially thrilled at the opportunity we have to get more women on bikes in races. There is growing interest in bike racing, and in gravel racing in general—an endurance sport that gives people the chance to explore parts of America off the beaten track,” says Wills. Her word to young women? “Get on your bike. Ride. And keep riding. Do it for fun, and if you love going fast and are interested in racing, get to know people who are into cycling. Come visit our tents and cheer us on at Lake Bluff Crit and the other Intelli Cup races.
