Ellen Cohen was brushing her teeth one morning in 2005, when the Highland Park resident heard her son,Zac,crying in the next room. Zac,7 years old and getting ready for school, was watching a news segment on television. Hurricane Katrina had devastated New Orleans and surrounding areas. “He told me, ‘Mommy, all those kids lost their toys,’” Ellen recalls. “We talked some more in the kitchen, and I explained to Zac that Mother Nature sometimes does horrible things.” Her distraught, determined son still wanted to do something for those kids.Right away. The initial plan was to collect a few stuffed animals from neighbors and then send the comfort companions to dispirited children in Louisiana. Word got out about the plan. NBC News in Chicago aired a piece about Zac. “The Today Show spotlighted youngsters across the country helping young Hurricane Katrina sufferers. A couple of men in California called Ellen to express their wish to set up a website for Zac’s drive. “They asked me, ‘What would you like us to call it?’”Ellen says.“I had to come up with something quickly.I came up with ‘Zac’s Zoo.’” A few stuffed animals turned into 10,000 stuffed animals. “Zac,”Ellen says,“got excited.All he wanted
to do then was to help people any way he could. He was like that throughout his childhood. Wouldn’t it be nice if all kids had the spirit Zac had? Think of what the world would be like today.” The world suffered a significant loss last year, when Zac Cohen and his inspiring altruistic spirit died after a motorcycle accident. The young zookeeper—and the youngest “Point of Light”honoree—was 20 and about to begin a path to a career as an emergency medical technician. But Zac’s Zoo will continue to roar and bring joy to traumatized children, thanks to waves of local support that heartened the mother of a son with an enormous heart. Ellen Cohen and current Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering were schoolmates at Highland Park High School.Cohen arranged a meeting with Rotering earlier this year to discuss her vision of Zac’s enduring legacy. “Nancy said to me,‘You have to bring Zac’s Zoo back,’” Cohen recounts. It’s certainly back,and it’s teaming up with local first responders and Ravinia Festival to ease the fears of traumatized children. First responders will distribute donated stuffed animals to children after encountering them in scary situations, such as riding in an ambulance or testifying in court. The exclusive stuffed animals come in two styles—a panda bear and a floppy-eared puppy, each dressed in a T-shirt bearing the “Zac’s Zoo at Ravinia”logo.The animals are sold in Continued on PG 8

Pairs of the mix-and-match stuffed animals are available at Ravinia’s Festival Shop while supplies last, through September 15. The cost is $18—$25 earmarked for the cost of production of the cuddly toys and $7 allocated to the Ravinia Women’s Board in support of the festival’s nonprofit Reach Teach Play education programs. “Our hearts go out to the Cohen family members, but we’re all impressed and encouraged by the way they’ve channeled their grief into this positive remembrance of Zac to continue this young man’s mission of helping children through tragedy,” Chairman of the Ravinia Women’s Board Marilyn Vender says in a statement.“We have a similar mission of brightening the lives of young people through music, so we are very proud to be able to help Zac’s Zoo.” The first sign of Zac Cohen’s genuine concern for others appeared a year before Hurricane Katrina. Again, he was watching television and learning of another natural disaster.The Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami killed more than 225,000 people in December 2004. “Zac wanted to shovel snow and donate his earnings to the American Red Cross,” Ellen says. “He made $80,

and I matched that. Years later, while driving home after a bike trip,he saw a man,with a broken arm,walking along the side of a highway. The man had a flat tire and
had spent three hours waiting for somebody to help him. Zac got out of the car and said to the man, ‘I have never changed a tire, but, if you tell me what to do, I will do it for you.’ It took Zac 20 minutes to change the tire. That was Zac, always willing to help, always thinking of others. That was who he was. “He was so disappointed in the people in the cars who had seen the man and kept on driving,” she adds. “He couldn’t understand their thoughtlessness.” Former Ohio Gov. John Kasich hosted the television program Heartland with John Kasich from 2001 to 2007. A 7-yearold Zac Cohen made two appearances on the show. “John called Zac ‘America’s youngest hero,’” Ellen says.“He also told him, ‘You’ll do great things for our country when you’re older.’ Zac was embarrassed with all the attention he received. All that mattered to him was the well-being of others. He loved his father, Barry, and me, and he abso-
lutely adored his sister, Elana, who’s 12 now. He loved his friends.That heart of his was so big.We’re following Zac’s lead. And ‘we’ covers so many people: our family, his friends, first responders, and all of the wonderful people at Ravinia.” In addition to the animals for sale at Ravinia’s Festival Shop,volunteers will collect new-with-tags stuffed animals for redistribution at the Ravinia Festival information booth in the Martin Theatre Plaza, located just inside the main entrance, at the following concerts: Pentatonix, August 15; Laurie Berkner, August 17; and the day-long Fiesta Ravinia, featuring a live orchestra playing the score to the computer-animated fantasy film Coco as it’s shown on screens in the Pavilion and on the Lawn, September 15. Beginning with his professional association with Ira Gershwin more than 40 years ago and continuing through his 33-year recording career and his Emmynominated PBS series and related projects, musician and music historian Michael Feinstein is the torch bearer and ambassador for the Great American Songbook. A talented pianist and singer known for his interpretations of songs from multiple periods, Fein-

stein has also made a name for himself as a band leader, working with symphony orchestras as well as more intimate musical groups. Additionally, his work as an archivist, preserving the legacy of the canon and sharing his passion for it, has brought him acclaim from an even wider audience. A consummate entertainer, Feinstein spends a lot of time on the road performing in venues of varying sizes, including Ravinia, where he will be performing with Chicago’s very own Haley Reinhart on Thursday, August 29. The North Shore Weekend recently had the pleasure of speaking with Feinstein about his passion for music and more.

You have a long history of collaboration, having teamed up with a vast array of artists including Cheyenne Jackson, Jimmy Webb, Barbara Cook, Jerry Herman and George Shearing, to mention a few. What is it about you that makes you so good at playing well with others? My mother certainly wouldn’t have said that I played well with others when I was growing up because I was a solitary kid. But when it comes to music, I love the inspiration that comes from working with another artist who may have a different point of view about a particular song or a particular style of music. So, at its best it blossoms into something where the whole is greater than the parts. The music world suffered a tragic loss with the passing of André Previn with whom you collaborated on your 2013 album Change of Heart:The Songs of André Previn. Would you please say a few words about Previn? André was one of my heroes. He was exquisitely gifted. His musical scope was unlike any I ever knew, and I knew Leonard Bernstein and Jule Styne and Jerry Herman and many extraordinary people. But André was a man who was so prodigious in his assimilation of music that he did everything. I’m not saying he had more talent than Leonard Bernstein, because Bernstein was larger than life and iconic. And yet, André to me is certainly equal to Bernstein, even though the perception of him is not the same. He embraced of classical music and jazz and popular song and film scoring and writing so many different kinds of music. Even a month shy of his 90th birthday, he was still fully inspired, writing music that belied his years.
What a legacy... It’s extraordinary! I wish that he was more acknowledged in his time because he’s deserving of it. It was a joy to record with him because I wanted to record his songs, his popular songs. His first response to me when I first asked him about it was, ‘Are there enough?’ Certainly, there were. The only sad part is by that time he already had crippling arthritis and he didn’t play as well as he wanted to. If we had done the album only a year earlier, his playing would have been very different.That’s life. When I sang the vocals, I had to match his playing,
which sometimes was lacking in some of the power he used to possess, so it turned out differently. But it was a snapshot of that moment in his life.
Change of Heart and your 2014 holiday album are your most recent studio recordings. Is there any chance that a new Michael Feinstein album is in the works? Yes, I’m working on a project now that will be coming out in the fall that’s related to the Gershwins, the songs of George and Ira Gershwin. However, it’s a completely different, new and unusual take on the work that I think will be very surprising to people, and it is another collaboration. I’m actively working on it now and I’m being coy purposefully to wait to announce it, but it’s something that I think is among my best work. I think it’s a culmination of all that’s come before in my career that will give me a different means of interpreting this music at this point.
I’m glad you mentioned the Gershwins because your devotion to the Great American Songbook canon comes through in a variety of ways—from your numerous recordings to your acclaimed PBS series and NPR series, from the book you wrote about the Gershwins to the founding of the Great American Songbook Foundation.With all the work you’ve done for the cause, do you have any other projects planned? There are always projects in the works.The way that I’m built is that I constantly force myself to do things that scare me. I want to do as much as I can in this life-time and I feel like I’ve wasted too much time because of fear or things that got in the way when I was younger. I want to do what I can to keep the music alive and also to keep creative expression fresh. I’m always working on different projects. I’m working on writing more music and I’m going to do another book soon. I’m particularly interested in music and healing as a transformational tool because we need all the help we can get these days. Music is a physical vibration. We are made of vibrations. Therefore, music can be one of the most powerful therapeutic and healing tools that is available to us. People don’t understand nor harness the proper power of what it can offer. In addition to your roles as a performer and musical archivist and educator, you are also well-known as an impresario, operating venues bearing your name, such

as Feinstein’s at the Nikko in San Francisco and Feinstein’s/54 Below in New York. What does that aspect of your work mean to you? I always had the fantasy of having a nightclub. The very makeup of a club is my favorite place in which to make music and to listen to music. I find that going to huge venues is something that, while most people appreciate it, I find a little intimidating. To create these clubs is a personal fulfillment.There is not a lot of money in it.There’s an old joke, “How do you own a nightclub and have a million dollars? Start with two million.” But it must be rewarding on some level to see these venues operating. Very much so. I love being able to bring all sorts of artists, seasoned and fresh, to the different venues. Especially in New York where we have so much talent in Manhattan. So many Broadway performers, some of whom have never done a nightclub turn. They are accustomed to inhabiting a character. Some are fantastic and embrace it. Other are absolutely terrified to not be in character. To watch the blooming and blossoming of the different talent is extraordinarily exciting.
You mentioned the challenge of larger venues.You are embarking on a tour in which the various concert venues vary in size. What can people expect from this upcoming tour? I’m doing different types of shows in different places. In Florida, I conduct a symphony orchestra, as I do in Pasadena. Some shows I do with big band, others with combo. My shows are always interactive with the audience. When an artist walks on stage, they feel the audience, they feel a certain sense of what the show’s going to be like. Not only from the first applause when you walk on stage, but also from the venue itself, and the hearts and souls of the audience.That affects the entire energy and attitude of what happens on stage. Every place I go is exciting and new. It is the immediacy of live performing that is fulfilling and exciting, and there’s something scary about it at the same time. I think people are inured to technology and things that are canned, that the live experience is a means of connecting that is essential for me. For tickets and other information, visit ravinia.org. ‘Schu’ All In NEW TRIER SOPHOMORE COURTNEY SCHUMACHER IS MORE—MUCH MORE— THAN A HISTORY-MAKING BASEBALL PLAYER. BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
It’s a school night inside the Schumacher house in Winnetka. Courtney Schumacher—who might hold the world record for most sports and physical activities tried before the age of 15—is about to do push-ups in her room. She had completed sets of pull-ups in the same space. As she nears the floor at the start of her first push-up, the 5-foot-7 daughter of Bill and Allison Schumacher nears an open textbook. Or maybe it’s a sheet of paper filled with math problems. Her thinking: Why only strengthen your arms when you can exercise your mind and complete homework assignments at the same time?
Courtney is fearless. I am so proud of her for making the New Trier baseball team.
A consummate student-athlete, indeed. Allison Schumacher has caught her daughter— a sophomore-to-be at New Trier High School— multitasking in such a manner more than once, and you can’t help but picture the proud mother shaking her head and smiling at the same time. A Courtney Schumacher who isn’t climbing something or throwing a ball against a wall or juggling three bocce balls or trying a new water-ski trick or honing her hockey skills is a sound-asleep Courtney Schumacher. “I’m determined in everything I do,” says a resolute Schumacher, who, at New Trier, plays golf, hockey, and baseball—yes, baseball, a sport played by only boys at the school from early last century until Schumacher made both the freshman squad and school history as a second baseman last spring. “I just want to play sports, work hard to get better in the sport I’m playing at the time, and do well in sports.” Schumacher, who’s as humble as she is athletic and hopes to play NCAA Division I women’s hockey, competed in basketball, soccer, and tennis before enrolling at NTHS. She has played volleyball with friends, loves to swat shots in badminton every now and then, soars and flips atop a trampoline in the Schumacher backyard, and she would never turn down the opportunity—her packed schedule permitting—to battle in a game of Ultimate (formerly known as Ultimate Frisbee). “A tennis pro at Midtown Athletic Club in Chicago saw Courtney play tennis, and I’m sure THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
team, at the Baseball For All Tournament in Rockford. “I watched her play catcher in baseball, when she was in middle school,” says Glencoe resident Margot Norehad, a good friend and a teammate of Schumacher on Chicago Mission AAA and North Shore Warhawks hockey teams. “Courtney is fearless. I am so proud of her for making the New Trier baseball team. The stuff she does off the ice, or off the field, to improve as an athlete is amazing. Her skills and speed are amazing, too. We love to be active when we’re together. We refuse to be people who sit on couches forever and do nothing. I just took a break from a bike ride to talk to you about Courtney.” Schumacher’s most thrilling athletic ride of her life, to date? Her debut as an American Ninja Warrior Junior competitor last fall. The demands of the competition’s obstacle course—Archer Steps, Tic Toc Pendulum, and Floating Shelf Grab, to name a few—intrigued her. She then trained for three months at Ultimate Ninjas Libertyville. Schumacher applied online for a spot in the inaugural American Ninja Warrior Junior field by submitting videos of her athletic prowess. She flew to California with her mother and landed a Final Four slot in her age group (13-14). The competition aired on the station Universal Kids in October. Schumacher lost to a boy in each of her two highly competitive one-on-one races. But each victor had entered the event with almost as much experience in American Ninja Warrior tests as Schumacher had accrued in hockey games. “Courtney puts in the time, the extra time, away from the rink,” says Michael Glass, Schumacher’s Winnetka Warriors U12 hockey coach. “And the time she devotes to working hard on her game shows in her play. Great athlete, terrific kid, never quits. She keeps her feet moving, usually to the point of exhaustion.” Schumacher, back in her third-grade days when she lived in Chicago, walked from one house to another on Halloween dressed as former St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols, now with the Los Angeles Angels. Wells Go Far GLENCOE’S WENDY SERRINO CHAMPIONING UNICEF’S GROUNDBREAKING WATER FOR GUINEA INITIATIVE. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
A vacationing Wendy Serrino answers the phone call in Park City, Utah. The Glencoe resident had just completed a morning hike with the family dog, Zoe, in late July. The dutiful canine served as Serrino’s alert Sherpa—minus the Himalayan heritage and the ability to converse. “It was beautiful,” says Serrino, her voice conveying a can’t-wait-for-my-next-hike lilt. “The wooded trails, the hilltop flowers, and the wildlife are all incredible. It’s a good escape, hiking here or anywhere else. But you can’t let your mind wander too much; you have to focus on what you’re doing, on where you’re going.

“I hiked along the Blue Ridge Mountains in college,” the University of Virginia graduate adds. “So much fun. It was physically challenging, too, but so worth it. It’s a different world up there.” Serrino’s ongoing journey—as a passionate UNICEF officer and supporter—in the world down here is her commitment to Water for Guinea, a UNICEF USA initiative devoted to improving sustainable water access to rural communities in the west-coastal republic in West Africa. Launched in 2014 after UNICEF partnered with AJA Charitable Foundation to test the feasibility of developing cost-effective water points in remote villages, Water for Guinea continues to focus on—and chip away at—the 36 percent of Guinea’s population that lacks access to safe water. Children are particularly vulnerable to falling ill due to waterborne diseases. It now costs an average of only $12.55 to provide one person safe water for a decade because of the deployment of Water for Guinea’s Manual Drilling Program.

The program constructed 163 wells. “Water for Guinea provides instant help,” says Serrino, a former chairman of the Midwest Regional Board of Directors for UNICEF USA. “It’s transformative. It changes the lives of many, particularly children, immediately; I love that about Water for Guinea. I’ve always admired what UNICEF does to protect and save children all over the world. UNICEF impressed the heck out of me after the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami in 2004, when it got in there quickly and rescued children during a terrible tragedy. “UNICEF,” adds the mother of four and the founder of the nonprofit North Shore Exchange, “was the first charitable organization my husband, Frank, and I backed after we had paid off our student loans. It was time. Time to give back.” The daughter of Don Mueller, formerly of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, and Sandy, a secretary dedicated to a wide range of philanthropic causes, Wendy grew up in Missouri, Kansas, Te x a s , and northern Virginia. Or, in her word, “Everywhere.” Her mother died last year. “My mom,” Serrino says, “inspired me. Her mantra when she raised me was, ‘Be kind, be useful, help others, make time for others.’ She wanted people to be willing to walk in others’ moccasins before making judgments about them.” After graduating from the University of Virginia with a degree in industrial engineering, Serrino earned her MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. She worked for Intel before Kraft Foods hired her to serve in its product marketing department. Serrino
got promoted to marketing director and left Kraft after 15 years. In 2013 she created North Shore Exchange— an award-winning upscale and luxury resale

boutique, with locations in Glencoe, Chicago, and Skokie—and its sound business plan. To date it has donated nearly $2 million to Chicago-area charities that provide human services to children and families below the poverty level, as well as to Family Service in Glencoe. North Shore Exchange received the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce James Tyree Award for emerging business leadership in 2017. UNICEF USA needed an effective leader to bolster Water for Guinea’s mission and enhance the awareness of the critical project’s phases stateside. It tapped a dynamic one in Wendy Serrino, who recently produced and narrated a snappy, creative YouTube video. The one-minute, 37second recording presents Guinea’s dire situation—through facts and figures and illustrations—and announces Water for Guinea’s aim to raise $2 million in two years to expand the program and supply sustainable drinking water to an additional 210,000 people. “My first version of the video was terrible,” Serrino, a resident of Glencoe for 24 years, recalls with laughter. “Then, after adding illustrations, it was not quite as terrible. Then I called Ink Factory Studio in Chicago, and the people at that wonderful company did such a great job of making Water for Guinea’s concepts come to life for us in the video.” Serrino has visited Madagascar, Rwanda, Laos, and Uganda, among other countries, as a representative of UNICEF, the world’s largest humanitarian organization. In December she plans to see the beneficiaries of Water for Guinea firsthand in N’Zerekore and other regions. Frank and Wendy’s youngest child, 17-year-old Tommy, is a UNICEF youth club member. The couple’s other children—Natalie, Jessie, and Jack—are UNICEF donors. “I’m really lucky,” admits Serrino, who likes to order either an omelet or a stack of pancakes at her favorite North Shore breakfast spot, Café Buongiorno in Winnetka. “I live a good, full life. I’m in a very happy marriage, with four great kids, and I have the time to be a mom and focus on meaningful projects connected to UNICEF and North Shore Exchange.” Her favorite part of motherhood?
