We are proud to be the #1 brokerage firm in Hinsdale.

“We just installed all new windows at our house and we love them! Before we made our decision we went to the manufacturer’s plant to see how the windows were made. We were concerned at first because Russ’s price was more than half of his competitor’s quoted price. After our tour we were very comfortable with our decision. Installation day was quick and painless. Our house was left in great condition. I highly recommend this company!”

COUNTRY VS. TOWN

JACKIE FLAHERTY

grew up in Palos Park in a supportive, close-knit household where hard work was valued and dreams, big or small, were always encouraged. She attended Mother McAuley and truly loved the all-girls environment, which shaped her confidence early and taught lessons in how to be both outspoken and collaborative.

At the University of Illinois in Champaign, Jackie had the quintessential Big 10 college experience which gave her a surprising amount of real-world education in responsibility, time management, and reading people quickly.

She went on to earn my master’s in counseling, completing her practicum and internship at the University of Chicago’s career office. “I loved working with students to help them prepare for interviews and navigate early career decisions. That experience led me into recruiting in trading and financial services, fast-paced and complex environments that required strong listening skills and an ability to match people with the right opportunities,” Jackie says.

Travel was always in the background. Jackie studied abroad in Florence, her first time in Europe. She recalls the experience as humbling, unforgettable, and transformative. “I learned how to be resourceful and adaptable, and it planted the earliest seeds of how I approach travel today”

In her twenties, travel was often about quick escapes, not because she preferred it that way, but because it fit the busy season of life when PTO was limited and trips were often built around weddings, weekends with friends, and whatever life placed on the calendar. Jackie explains, “That constraint followed me into adulthood for a different reason. Even when you have the means, time is rarely unlimited. That’s at the heart of my travel planning business, The Weekend Discovery: designing extraordinary travel that fits beautifully into real life.”

The skills Jackie picked up recruiting in trading and financial services required sharp listening, discernment, and creativity. She learned to understand what people truly needed, even when they weren’t sure how to articulate it.

Jackie explains, “That translates directly to travel advising. Matching a client with the right hotel or designing a trip that feels just right requires curiosity, clarity, and the same active listening I learned in my counseling program. Helping people figure out what they want, even when they’re not sure, is still at the center of my work.”

Her life now looks nothing like those corporate years. She runs her business with a small but mighty team and finally has the flexibility to be present for school pickups and drop-offs; a luxury corporate life did not provide.

“Everything I do blends work and life in this intentional, rewarding way. When I travel, I’m always in research mode, noticing closet sizes, the energy of a lobby, and the way a property handles service, amenities, families, and details that matter. It’s all about placing clients exactly where they belong,” she says.

She relishes building genuine connections with hoteliers and partners around the world, calling it one of the most rewarding parts of the job.

“I care about every trip as if it were my own. While anyone can book online, what they can’t get is personalization. The birthday remembered, the allergy flagged, the bottle of Chablis instead of Champagne, and the right room type for a complicated family dynamic. Now I get to share that world with my two daughters. They love travel in the most joyful, imaginative way. They even play “hotel” at home. There is nothing funnier or sweeter than two tiny butlers running around the house announcing that our room is ready,” Jackie says.

COUNTRY VS. TOWN

What’s on your reading stack? Autobiographies. Right now, Be Ready When the Luck Happens by Ina Garten and e ird Gilmore Girl: A Memoir by Kelly Bishop. What organizations do you support? I’m drawn to people who are building something, espe- cially women stepping into a second or third act of entrepreneurship. I believe in connecting people, sharing networks, and creating opportunities for others to succeed. is community supported me when I launched e Weekend Discovery, and I take every chance I can to pay that forward, whether it’s cheering on a new business, making an introduction, or quietly supporting someone pursuing a dream. What’s your signature entertaining style? Comfortable, unfussy, and always welcoming. If the door is open, you are invited. I love the kind of gatherings where people relax right away, kids wander in and out, and the champagne is already owing before anyone has even taken their coat o . I also love the nights when noticing. e goal is simple: good energy, good company, and the kind of gathering that keeps unfolding, one more glass, one more story, one more hour. Favorite winter tradition or activity? In Hinsdale, winter is all about nding warmth. I am happiest when I can settle in near a great replace or escape somewhere cozy for a long dinner with friends. And when the cold really settles in, my favorite tradition is planning a warm-

weather getaway to look forward to. Go-to out t? Jeans, a sweater, and ats of some kind. I walk too fast for heels. Is there anything you can’t leave the house without? My phone. I know, I wish it wasn’t the case, but here we are. A lip balm and a pack of UNO cards. UNO solves almost everything when you’re with kids. Where do they know you by name? Hotel sales directors. We exchange countless emails to ensure everything is prepared for a client’s stay. Occasionally, someone will say, “Oh, I’ve

heard of e Weekend Discovery,” and it absolutely makes my day. I’m an introverted extrovert, so those moments feel both surprising and incredibly meaningful. A per fect day in the country is? A walk into town for cof fee and quiche at Toni’s, plus a cookie or sweet treat for the girls. Browsing local shops and picking up something fun at Vintage Charm or My Sister Kate, then lunch at Fuller House. By late afternoon, we are usually back on our block, which honestly feels like childhood in the best way. Kids are everywhere, darting from yard to yard, ringing doorbells, inventing games on the y. e older kids somehow end up in charge, the little ones try to keep up, and it is genuinely the best entertainment to just stand there and watch it all unfold. Neighbors gather out front, someone asks what everyone is making for dinner, and half the time we end up laughing because no one has a real plan yet. en we head inside, turn on the replace, and end the night with a movie or a board game. A perfect day in town is? In Chicago, my perfect day depends on the season, but I will always support a staycation. In the winter, that looks like checking into e Peninsula, then heading to the Art Institute for a quiet morn-

ing wandering my favorite galleries before the crowds arrive. Lunch at e Gage, an afternoon of shopping and strolling Oak Street, and then cocktails and dinner at RL to wrap it all up.

RAISING THE STEAKS

At MK Steak + Bar, two lifelong friends resurrect the charms of a community steakhouse with standout steaks, seafood and plenty of chic style to spare.

I’ve come to the realization that there’s no such thing as a squandered steak dinner. Sure, I’ve endured my share of forgettable cuts. I’ve hacked my way through New York strips that were as tough as luggage handles. I’ve seen ribeyes so undercooked only a tartare intervention could save them. And once, at an unnamed bistro, I ordered a skirt steak so prosciutto-skinny it could have slipped unnoticed onto a charcuterie board.

Regrettable? Maybe. Underwhelming? Sure. But time is never wasted in a steakhouse because, in the end, the tough experiences make you appreciate the tender ones even more. So when a server recently glided a glistening, gloriously cross-hatched 14-ounce ribeye onto our table at the new MK Steak + Bar in Glen Ellyn, I knew we’d discovered a keeper.

MK doesn’t barter in exotic by-the-ounce imported luxuries. No A5 Wagyu from Japan or Bife Angosto strip loins from Argentina. Owners Jonny Kutrubis and Joe Marino are trying to resurrect an endangered species: the friendly independently owned neighborhood “corner steakhouse.”

Which means they o er a kid’s menu as well as a surprisingly deep wine list. ey list sandwiches on one side of the menu (the leek and bonemarrow butter burger is a brilliant white-tablecloth ri on a Culver’s butter burger) and then roasted branzino and miso-glazed sea bass on the other. ey want families to drop by on Tuesday nights and couples to celebrate milestone achievements on special occasions

As a result, they’ve re ned a recipe for

“double beef” steaks as their primary lure. What’s a double-beef steak, you ask? Steaks that are slicked down with beef tallow, a clever hack that’s worth incorporating into your bag of backyard BBQ tips and tricks.

Jereme McGovern brushes on the beef tallow, then res his steaks in a blisteringly hot Montague steakhouse broiler. e aforementioned tallow doesn’t just add a second smoky undercurrent—imagine a smoked beef consommé avor—it also insulates the steak, allowing it to withstand the

careers—Kutrubis running restaurants and Marino trading options at the CBOE—every time they crossed paths, they’d toss around the idea of owning a restaurant together.

Whenever Marino, who’s lived in Glen Ellyn for over a decade ago, passed the old Geisha shoe store on the corner of Main Street and Hillside Avenue, he superimposed a restaurant onto the space. One afternoon, he even snapped a few photos of the building and texted them to Jonny. When we nally get around to launching our

high heat without developing a charred crust. No juices are lost; they simply lie in wait, waiting for us to release them.

MK’s steaks arrived anked by a silver condiment cup lled with ovenroasted garlic cloves. ere’s nothing else to it. Beef tallow aside, it’s an admittedly “let the beef speak for itself” preparation. But I am happy to report that our steak positively glistened, as if it had been varnished with a topcoat of beef gloss.

When my knife glided into our ribeye, I could hear the faint chorus of hosannas rising in the air us. Beads of moisture purled out from a perfectly pink center. My absolution had arrived.

Kutrubis and Marino, who also own the more casual Rebel Kitchen + Bar in Lombard, have been dreaming about opening up this steakhouse for almost two decades.

e two grew up together playing tee-ball in Elmwood Park. Although they went on to pursue di erent

dream steakhouse, the message said, this is where we should put it.

But when that corner space was converted into a luxury apartment complex, complete with commercial space on the ground oor, it felt like the restaurant gods had thrown them a hanging curveball right over the middle of the plate. So they took their swing.

“ e truth of the matter is,” says Joe, “this town needed this type of concept years ago—something that brought a little ‘city cool’ steakhouse to Glen Ellyn but respected what this community is all about.”

nish, every hue was hand selected by the “MK” boys. e decision to emphasize that MK was a “bar” as well as a steakhouse was deliberate. Both Kutrubis and Marino were in agreement that they needed to supplement pricier steakhouse standards with the kind of East Coast seafood o ering you’d nd in Boston or Providence. O ering oysters in the bar and main dining room was priority number one, provided they came dressed with a South Side mignonette spiked with Chicago-style giardiniera. MK’s menu o ers the usual seafood suspects—jumbo lump crab cakes, prawns and the like—but I don’t know of many places that serve a derivation of oysters Rockefeller that swaps out the oyster for half of a lobster tail shell lled with a burbly slurry of creamed spinach, and bacon and panko breadcrumbs.

In addition to the aforementioned steaks, the sheer generosity of MK’s miso-sea bass will impress bargain hunters, especially considering the forest of maitake mushrooms studded with edamame that is piled a mile high beneath the sh. e only thing more surprising might be the house chocolate cake, which is as rich and towering as Gibsons’ famous milehigh desserts.

In the end, what MK Steak + Bar o ers isn’t reinvention. It’s a form of restoration. Big Apple Energy

Hinsdale’s Infant Welfare Society gives Tablescapes a jolt of New York-style creativity and style.

Everyone has a di!erent way to make it through the dreary days of winter. Some escape every weekend they’re able to the sunny shores of Florida. Some spend every spare minute in hot yoga classes and infrared saunas. An increasing number of smart philanthropists know that the best way to beat the winter blues is to plan to attend Tablescapes, the signature fundraiser of the Hinsdale Chapter of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago Auxiliary.

is year’s theme, New York, New York promises to transport guests to the city that never sleeps. Tablescapes co-chair Lauren Houder says, “It’s been an honor to be a part of Tablescapes and I can’t wait for everyone to see what’s “New” York with our event! I’ve always considered places close to my heart and celebrating NYC because of its vibrancy only seemed appropriate during the 25th Anniversary of September 11, 2001 and a city that changed forever.”

Lauren adds, “We are thrilled to unveil our New York, New York theme, inviting everyone to savor a taste of the Big Apple right here in the western suburbs.” She adds, “Our guests eagerly anticipate Tablescapes each year, renowned for its stunning table designs and imaginative vignettes. However, this event extends far beyond beautiful aesthetics: it provides a vital opportunity to make a tangible di!erence. With options ranging from sponsorships o our silent auction and grand ra es, there’s an avenue for everyone to contribute, and every donation helps fund essential programs.”

Co-chair Julie Sutton adds, “Our New York, New York theme lends itself to over-the-top experiences like our “Tavern on the Green” bubbly bar and Tablescape designs inspired by the Hamptons, e U.S. Open, and the magic of Broadway to name a few.

Having outgrown every other area venue, Tablescapes moved in 2024 to the Marriott Southwest in Burr Ridge. is gorgeous space allows for more guests to attend and experience everything the day brings, including boutique shopping, lunch, demonstrations, and the stars of the show, the member-designed tablescapes, all of which will be ra ed o! to lucky supporters.

Julie says, “I can’t think of a daytime event that’s packed with more fun! Guests are sure to enjoy time with friends, shopping, designer handbags and shoes, silent and live auctions, eight tablescape ra es, our new “vacation station” bidding wall, a fashion stroll, music, signature drinks and of course, fantastic food.”

Chapter member and stylist Kristin Lopez acknowledges,

“ is year’s tablescapes is going to be a di!erent vibe than in the past. Traditionally, orals have been popular, but this year we are embracing the concept that New York City is a living, breathing fashion show, so the dress code is elevated, playful, and utterly NYC.”

e same big energy that runs through New York City is cursing through the Hinsdale Chapter, which has grown in both membership and impact over the past few years.

Chapter President Molly Painter Lucht says, “I think that the Tablescapes platform has had legs due to those leaders that came before me and have laid a solid foundation. Our membership is at an all-time high, and the members of the organization move mountains to help the IWS Family Health Center. By repeating and building on the magic year over year, we’ve seen growth in both the event and what we can give to the Center.”

Julie o!ers insight into this moment of the longstanding group, saying, “I joined the Hinsdale Auxiliary of Infant Welfare Society last year and absolutely fell in love with the cause and all the lovely people I’ve met. ese members think big and execute bigger. We encourage and support one another, and I’m thrilled to be a part of a group that truly makes such a di!erence.”

at encouragement extends to the new CEO of IWS Family Health, Heidi Ortolaza-Alvear. Molly recently hosted an evening in her home for members of all Auxiliary Chapters to get to know this impressive leader. “I am excited about her leadership due to her extensive background in maternal and child health. She has a growth mind set and expertise in service development and expansion, which means every dollar we raise goes further to serve more youth. She comes Esperanza Health where she opened four sites in four years. With this skill set and knowledge base, I am con dent that we will achieve the same type of scale at IWS in Chicagoland. In addition, she and her family have lived in the community we serve and as a result it is clear that she understands the needs and has a great deal of knowledge on how to maximize care,” says Molly.

IWS Family Health is dedicated to o!ering a comprehensive range of integrated, quality, and preventive health care services to children and their families, empowering them to lead healthy and productive lives. Recognized with the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval, IWS is committed to excellence in ambulatory care and behavioral health, ensuring quality care in a safe environment. Based in the Chicagoland area, this healthcare home for many provides essential services such as pediatric and adult

health, pediatric and family dentistry, prenatal care including Centering Pregnancy™, care coordination, primary care, and both short-term and long-term behavioral health therapy. Additional services include speech therapy, occupational therapy, and optometry. It’s a place that many support passionately. “Tablescapes is a testament to the power of community coming together for a vital cause. e funds we raise directly support the IWS Family Health Center, providing underserved families across Chicago with essential healthcare services. It’s a powerful reminder of the difference we can make when we unite for a common purpose. I’m

incredibly proud of what our members have achieved so far, and we are profoundly grateful to our supporters for their unwavering generosity,” Molly says.

ere is no better Sunday Funday for a great cause than Tablescapes.

Tablescapes will be held at 12 p.m. on March 22 at the Marriott Southwest Burr Ridge. Tickets, ra e tickets, and sponsorship opportunities are available at hinsdaleiws.com.

Choosing a Senior Living Community

As seniors age, their medical needs and daily activity needs increase as well. In my practice, we often see seniors that were independent and living in their homes have medical issues that require more help, support, and medical care. Fortunately, there are wonderful senior living communities with an array of services on-site to choose from. Sometimes navigating all the options and choices can be very stressful to families dealing with their aging loved one.

ere are various types of senior living care levels. ese include Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care, and Nursing Homes or Skilled Care. Each provides a di erent level of service and care.

Independent living is basically an apartment, rented by an individual or couple, with no additional health care services. Other on-site services like dining, laundry, and activities may be available but this can vary from one community to the next. All medication needs, doctor appointments, testing, and services are the responsibility of the senior to gure out.

Assisted Living includes levels of nursing care, CNA (certied nursing assistant) support, and medication management. Ask about sta to resident ratios, hospitalization rates, and other available services such as physical therapy.

Memory Care, is typically assisted living support level, in a secured or locked area of the community. is is to prevent residents from accidentally leaving due to cognition issues or decline.

Nursing homes are typically reserved for the highest level of care needed. is includes treatments like IV antibiotics, tracheostomy care, chronic large wounds, and post-surgical therapy. Many patients use nursing home skilled care for short-term medical needs. ere are long term residents of nursing homes as well, that reside there on a fulltime basis.

At Hansa Medical Groupe, we provide a preventative care model at the assisted living, memory care, and nursing home levels. However, we also provide care for independent living seniors as well and that is gaining popularity. It has made health care convenient by bringing our services to the senior, preventing many common issues like falls, and keeping folks independent longer. We have reduced ER visits and hospitalizations by up to 60 percent in buildings we currently service.

Shopping for your aging loved one for a place to live can be challenging. It’s also stressful relocating from a home they have loved and lived in most their lives to a smaller condo or apartment. Most families prefer a location close by to easily visit and within their budget. However, there are many other factors and services to consider. Visiting various communities is key to making the nal decision. Factor in the ancillary services, food quality, activity programs, and in my opinion most importantly the medical care available on site.

Hansa Medical Groupe has o ces at 5250 Old Orchard Road, Suite 300, in Skokie, and in Chicago, 847-920-0902, hansamedicalgroupe.com.

HOW NOT TO SUCK AT DIVORCE

Morgan Stogsdill and Andrea Rappaport’s top-rated podcast pairs humor and legal expertise to help people navigate the murky waters of divorce.
WORDS

Morgan Stogsdill and Andrea Rappaport are an unlikely comedy duo.

Stogsdill, Head of Family Law at Beermann LLP, is nationally acclaimed for her expertise in complex family law matters. In addition to being featured in e New York Times, she’s been selected for a myriad other prestigious awards, including being named as one of “ e Top 10 Women Attorneys in Illinois” by Emerging Lawyers. Rappaport, on the other hand, is a stand-up comedian and TV personality who also happens to be a divorced mom.

“Morgan is a very polished, buttoned up individual,” explains Rappaport, who joined forces with Stogsdill several years ago to produce the How Not to Suck at Divorce podcast, which has since soared to the top three in its category. “She’s like the country club version of me and I’m the loud-mouthed Jewish version of her.”

information we’re about to give them.”

e messages in the podcast “cut out the fat” and boil down messaging to the good, the bad, the really bad, and the “are you kidding me?” things listeners need to know if they’re getting divorced or considering it.

Rappaport and Morgan Stogsdill

“ e divorce industry is inundated with data that says ‘do this’ and ‘don’t do that’ and it’s overwhelming to people,” says Rappaport. “We changed that.”

In addition to providing legal advice based on Stogsdill’s impressive background in family law and Rappaport’s personal experience as a divorced mom, the podcast tells it like it is—often sharing di cult truths about the reality of divorce.

As Rappaport quips, if you took four shots of tequila while listening to their show, “we get it, but sober up and listen to these three things that no one wants to say out loud.”

1. Staying in a marriage for the kids is the absolute worst thing you can do.

Stogsdill discovered Rappaport’s Joan Rivers-style comedy and tell-it-like-it-is delivery several years ago through social media.

“When I went through my divorce, I was talking about not necessarily the details, but the unpopular opinions that people are thinking but not saying out loud,” Rappaport continues. “It caught Morgan’s attention and she said nobody’s doing this— nobody’s having these conversations.”

Part of the reason no-one was talking about some of these things is because it’s hard, particularly for those who are already at their emotional and mental worst. And as Rappaport has learned from doing comedy, sometimes laughter really can be the best medicine.

“As we started talking, we realized that we could use comedy to help people through this awful process of divorce. e question was, how do we help the average person who’s completely overwhelmed and scared, knowing that when you operate from a place of fear, you’re primed to make major mistakes,” says Rappaport, explaining that there is scienti c evidence behind their vision.

“Research shows that you can’t laugh and hold your breath at the same time,” she continues. “When you exhale, you are sending a signal to your brain that you’re safe. So, we strategically use humor in our show as a disarming mechanism to help them relax and open their minds to the important

2. Ignoring patterns of unhealthy behavior does not make the unhealthy behavior go away.

3. You’re a bigger part of the problem than you think you are.

e goal in sharing these messages is to help people be more proactive and approach their divorce process with a healthier perspective.

“Being reactive only makes your divorce more expensive and that’s not your attorney’s fault; it’s your fault,” explains Rappaport, adding that the podcast is also helpful for people who are holding on to unhealthy marriages. “Being aware of patterns and being aware of things you can change versus what you can’t change will protect your mental health. You’ve got to get into good mental shape before you’re able to endure this process.”

e good news is, you’ll get by with a little help from your new best friends Stogsdill and Rappaport—here to guide your divorce journey with love and levity.

eir How Not to Suck at Divorce podcast is the next best thing to having a divorce attorney, therapist, and really funny best friend with you at times—or as Rappaport puts it, “like tequila shots after a long Tuesday.”

Momentum Knows NO Boundaries

The spark, the systems, and the story of Jessica Qaasim.

Momentum. It’s the thread that ties every chapter of Jessica Qaasim’s story together—from her beginning on Chicago’s South Side to her global leadership at Google. It’s not just motion for motion’s sake; it’s the art of translating vision into forward progress, even when the path ahead isn’t clear. Today, as Head of Industry for Google Marketing Platform Partnerships, Qaasim leads with a dynamic combination of strategy, empathy, and drive—anchored by a belief that the world needs more people who come alive in their work and their purpose.

Qaasim’s journey began on Chicago’s South Shore, a lakefront neighborhood in the South Side, where she grew up with her single mother and two sisters. A graduate of Hyde Park’s Kenwood Academy, she learned early that education could be both a key and a compass. “I knew that learning could open doors my family had never walked through before,” she re ects. at mindset propelled her to Harvard, where she became the rst in her family to attend college and graduated with a degree in psychology. Her focus: understanding how people think, decide, and connect—insights that would later shape her leadership philosophy at one of the world’s most in uential technology companies.

Her years at Google have taken her across continents and cultures. She spent a decade in the U.K., launching and scaling partnership programs across more than 15 countries—from Italy and France to South Africa and Denmark. e experience expanded her worldview and deepened her conviction that innovation thrives when people, ideas, and perspectives collide. “Every market taught me something new about possibility,” she says. “It reinforced that momentum truly knows no boundaries.”

Today, Qaasim leads Google’s Marketing Platform Partnerships in the United States, driving innovation at the intersection of AI, data, and marketing technology. She helps brands unlock growth through smarter systems and more human storytelling. Her approach re ects a personal mantra she has carried throughout her career: Have a healthy disrespect for the impossible. “ e status quo is overrated,” she says with a smile. “You have to launch, iterate, and keep moving.”

“I knew that learning could open doors my family had never walked through before.”

While many of her Harvard peers took familiar paths into consulting or nance, Qaasim followed her intuition toward technology. “Tech had this potential to change the world at scale, and I wanted to be part of that movement,” she recalls. With little more than determination and a one-way ticket, she moved to Silicon Valley in her early twenties and joined Google. at decision marked the beginning of her 16-year tenure at the company, de ned by continuous growth, global impact, and bold leadership.

Her leadership philosophy rests on what she calls the “3Ms: Mastery, Mindset, and Momentum.” Mastery is about owning your craft—leveraging education, curiosity, and skill to create impact. Mindset is about believing in the power of yet—the growth that comes from perseverance and learning. And Momentum is about taking brave, compounding action before you feel ready. “ ese three principles are my North Star,” Qaasim observes. “ ey remind me that clarity doesn’t always come before action. Sometimes it comes because of it.”

As a woman of color in tech and global business, Qaasim also leads with representation and intention. She believes deeply in the quiet power of taking up space—of showing up visibly and purposefully to normalize what leadership looks like. “Representation isn’t about being the only one in the room,” she explains. “It’s about

opening doors so that others see what’s possible.” Her voice and presence have made her a sought-after speaker, mentor, and thought leader. Recognized as one of Adweek’s 50 most in uential executives, she serves as a CES Innovation Awards judge and frequently volunteers for organizations like Per Scholas and ink Chicago, inspiring the next generation of changemakers.

feel personal.”

Recently, Qaasim took on the leadership of Harvard’s Early Education Initiatives in Chicago, a full-circle moment in her journey. rough this work, she’s helping more students from backgrounds like hers see Harvard—and higher education—as a real, reachable path. “When students see someone who looks like them, it changes the story they tell themselves,” she explains. “It makes possibility

Beyond her professional roles, Qaasim is in the process of writing her rst book—one focused on helping people come alive in their work and lives. She’s also exploring board opportunities and continuing her own learning through Harvard Business School’s executive programs on leadership in turbulence. Her philosophy is simple: keep expanding your systems of in uence so you can lift others as you climb.

rough all of this, Qaasim has remained grounded in her values. She lives in Winnetka with her husband and two children, nding joy in the blend of global ambition and local community. Qaasim is a weekend baker, creating custom birthday cakes for family and treats for neighbors. “My roots on the South Side taught me resilience. My life now reminds me of balance,” she re ects. “Both are essential to who I am.”

If there’s one truth Qaasim has come to hold, it’s that belonging is not tied to a place—it’s built through purpose. “I can feel just as rooted on the South Side of Chicago as I do in London or Copenhagen,” she says. “ at’s the beauty of growth and gratitude—you carry home with you.”

Her story is ultimately one of alignment—of learning to lead with clarity in chaos, to connect systems with soul, and to build bridges between where we start and where we’re called to go next. Momentum, after all, isn’t about speed. It’s about direction—and Qaasim continues to prove that when your purpose is clear, there are truly no boundaries to how far you can go.

In Search of a Match

Northbrook native Amy Manelli is living with polycystic kidney disease. Now, she’s sharing her story in hopes of finding a living donor and inspiring others to learn more about organ donation.

When Amy Manelli talks about her life, the words that rise to the surface are gratitude, family, and perspective. She’s upbeat and calm, even when discussing something as daunting as living with end-stage kidney disease. “I feel pretty good,” she says with a gentle smile. “I’m really healthy otherwise. My biggest challenge is fatigue—but I think a lot of busy parents can relate to that.”

Manelli, who grew up in Northbrook, has lived with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) for all of her adult life. PKD is a genetic disorder that causes uid- lled cysts to grow inside the kidneys, gradually enlarging them and diminishing their function over time. ere is no cure, and the disease often leads to kidney failure. Manelli’s father and uncle both battled PKD and underwent two kidney transplants each.

She rst learned she had the same disease as a teenager. “When I was a senior in high school, my dad had kidney failure and went on the transplant list,” she recalls. “I was a good match for him, but when they did an ultrasound, they saw that I had the same disease as he did.”

ough her o cial diagnosis didn’t come until her 20s, Manelli began seeing a nephrologist early on and managed her health carefully. Her proactive approach—combined with the care of Dr. Arlene Chapman, one of the nation’s leading experts in PKD at the University of Chicago—has helped her stay strong for decades. “Dr. Chapman’s care has made such a di erence,” Manelli says. “Her deep knowledge of this disease has been invaluable.”

Today, Manelli is in stage 5 renal disease, with her kidneys functioning at about 15 percent. Despite the seriousness of her condition, she remains remarkably positive. “It’s a progressive disease,” she says, “and even if you’re doing everything right, it’s like a train on a track that keeps going. But I’m doing all I can to stay healthy. I’m active, eating well, and managing my fatigue.”

Manelli, a ski instructor who has an avid love of the outdoors, and her husband moved to Utah in 2021 after living in Chicago for nearly two decades. “It was such a good move for our family,” she says. “Utah has all the things we enjoy.” eir two daughters are thriving in their new home. And after undergoing genetic testing, Manelli and her family were relieved to learn that the girls do not carry the PKD gene, something they had a 50-50 chance of having.

Now, Manelli is facing the next big step in her journey: nding a kidney donor.

“Because this disease runs in my family, nding a living donor outside of my own family is my best option,” she notes.

Dr. Chapman has encouraged Manelli to be proactive in looking for a donor.

“ e process of nding a donor can take months or it can take years,” Dr. Chapman explains. “ e good news is that Amy has time to nd one that is best for her. My experience has been that when a match is found, the donor is so happy that they are able to give.”

A kidney from a living donor typically lasts twice as long—15 to 20 years or more—compared to one from a deceased donor. “ e sooner I can nd a living donor, the better my chance of avoiding dialysis,” Manelli says. “ e best outcomes are when the transplant happens before dialysis is needed.”

When a donor is found, Manelli’s surgery will be complex. “Each of my kidneys is about seven to eight pounds,” says Manelli, who is only 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighs about 120 pounds. “Because they’re so large, both would need to be removed during the transplant. ey’re just too heavy and too dense for me to safely keep them. But I’m healthy, and my doctors think I’m a strong candidate for this more di cult surgery.”

Now, Manelli is sharing her story publicly in hopes that someone might consider becoming a kidney donor—whether for her or for someone else waiting for a transplant. “It’s such a personal decision,” she says. “But everyone I’ve talked to who has donated a kidney says it was one of the most positive experiences of their lives.”

For those interested in learning more about kidney donation, the process is con dential, and all medical expenses are covered by the recipient’s insurance. Donors must be in good health and can schedule surgery at a time convenient for them.

“I have so much gratitude for the support around me,” Manelli shares. “My dad always told me to be proactive with my health and to research the best options available because knowledge is power when you’re ghting this disease. And that’s what I’m trying to do now.”

If you or others would like to learn more, contact Amy Manelli at agmanelli@gmail.com or visit: https://unos.org/transplant/livingdonation/.

Peace of Mind Planning

Thoughtful estate planning from Russo Law is built on trust, empathy, and experience.

WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY

Every year, Russo Law O ces has several clients who open estate planning conversations with the same refrain: “I wish I had done this sooner.” With children grown and retirement approaching, many admit estate planning had been on their to-do list since their kids were young—but life got in the way.

“We reassure them that it’s not too late—and that they’re not alone in starting this process later in life,” says rm owner Allyson Russo.

Once a thoughtful estate plan is in place—one that responsibly protects their children—clients feel an immediate sense of relief. “ ey leave with the peace of mind they’ve been missing,” Russo explains, “knowing the right structures are now in place to ensure everything runs smoothly, whatever the future brings.”

And the experience doesn’t end there. “Not only do clients trust us, but many are so happy with the process that they refer other family members to us as well,” Russo adds. “We consider that to be the greatest compliment.”

It’s a familiar story at Russo Law O ces, where estate planning, probate, trust administration, and small business advising are the rm’s primary focus.

Russo began practicing estate planning in 2010 after years in corporate business law. She has worked at large international rms and boutique estate planning practices in Boston and Chicago and holds an LL.M. in Taxation from Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, a J.D. from the University of Michigan, and a B.A. in Mathematics, magna cum laude, from Boston College.

In 2014, she founded Russo Law O ces, which has since grown to include four attorneys and three paralegals. “We work

as a team,” says Russo, “so there’s always someone available when a client needs us.”

Being locally based is another advantage. “Many of us live right here in the community,” Russo says. “We love working with our neighbors and contributing in a meaningful way.”

“Estate planning has always appealed to me,” she adds. “Our goal is to help people nd the comfort that comes with a solid plan—peace of mind, clarity, and security.”

Many clients come to Russo Law when they have young children and want to ensure their families are protected. “ ey want to leave things in good order,” Russo says.

With every client relationship, trust is paramount. “Beyond experience and technical knowledge, empathy and discretion are essential,” she explains. “Every family is di erent, and these conversations aren’t easy. No one likes to think about what happens after they’re gone, so we do everything we can to make the process as positive and reassuring as possible.”

It’s often those complexities that cause people to delay estate planning—especially when they’re young and healthy. “But that’s actually the best time to do it,” Russo says. “If something unexpected happens, having a plan in place when your children are young matters most.”

e bottom line: if you want your wishes honored, your assets distributed as intended, and decisions kept out of the courts, an estate plan is essential.

“We have a dedicated team to help you every step of the way,” Russo says. “Life is unpredictable, and our mission is to make sure your family and livelihood are protected.”

RUSH HINSDALE

SPECIALTY:

Dr. Kunal Bakshi: Family Medicine

Dr. Nerissa Fernandes: Internal Medicine

EDUCATION:

Dr. Bakshi: M.D., Windsor University School of Medicine; family medicine residency, Ascension Genesys Hospital.

Dr. Fernandes: D.O., NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine; internal medicine residency, Advocate Christ Medical Center

Dr. Nerissa Fernandes and Dr. Kunal Bakshi can tell you precisely why they chose to become primary care doctors.

Dr. Fernandes, an internal medicine specialist at Rush Hinsdale, was inspired by her father’s experience as a patient. “I felt drawn to specialize in internal medicine because of the profound impact that my dad’s internists had on his care plan during a time he was seriously ill,” says Dr. Fernandes, who sees adults 18 and older. “I was moved by their commitment to his health and wanted to do the same for my patients.”

Dr. Bakshi, a family medicine doctor at Rush Hinsdale who treats children and grown-ups, had such a passion for mental health that he originally wanted to be a psychologist. “But I found the way that probably has the most impact on people’s lives—as far as mental health and just general health—was being a family medicine doctor.”

Both physicians stress the importance of listening to their patients and tailoring their care accordingly.

“Two patients can have the same medical diagnosis,” Dr. Fernandes says, “but my approach and care plan for each one is different based on what matters to them and how the diagnosis and treatment will impact their life.”

As for Dr. Bakshi: ”I consistently prioritize shared decisionmaking in addressing a patient’s healthcare needs. Whether determining the need for tests or prescribing medications, I ensure that decisions are aligned with the patient’s individual goals and overall well-being.”
