POPPING OFF

Serious steaks. A new slate of limited time specials. And one fearless new champagne. Let’s put it this way: Perry’s in Oak Brook is committed to rewriting your end-of-the year dining plans.

WORDS BY PETER & KATE MICHAEL PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF PERRY’S

If you’re interested in stunning your in-laws over the holidays— or at least buying yourself a few blessed minutes of shocked silence—here’s your best move. Start by booking a table at Perry’s Steakhouse in Oak Brook, which recently rolled out a smart series of limited-time specials that feel like they were designed to defrost holiday tensions. ere’s a hearty chili studded with chunks of pork. A honey-kissed butternut squash gratin that will end your obsession with mashed sweet potatoes. And a uber-creamy pumpkin-spice cheesecake crusted with gingersnap crumbles.

en turn to your experiment. After everyone orders, wave your server over and do something that almost no self-respecting Cabernet-swilling Midwest carnivore almost ever does: Order a few flutes, maybe even a bottle, of Perry’s new Reserve Premiere

DINNER DATE

Cru Champagne. It’s Perry’s first proprietary champagne. It’s lean, bright and crisp, with a faint whisper of toasted brioche at the close. Which is another way of saying it’s an extremely versatile pour. ere’s enough minerality to use it as a chaser with oysters. It’s full bodied enough to sip with any steak. And there’s enough acidity in there to cut through the decadence that is Perry’s signature four-finger-tall pork chop.

Yes, I am arguing that we should all enjoy champagne with our steaks—not only because it’s the holiday season and you deserve it but because it can be a supremely elegant pairing.

For years, Perry’s corporate beverage team has been an outspoken proponent of pairing champagnes—especially toasted full bodied, richly acidic ones—with their offerings. Luckily for us, they recently doubled down on that philosophy by offering their own bottles of bubbly. ey could have taken a shortcut and simply brokered a deal with a domestic sparkling wine producer in say the Russian River Valley or Los Carneros, but they wanted to produce an actual champagne. So they flew across the Atlantic in what became an almost two-year journey to create

their definition of a true steakhouse champagne, one that cuts through proteins instead of clashes with them—and flirts with fat instead of fights it.

Perry’s tasked Beverage Director Paige Stroud and Chief Strategy O fficer/ Chief Marketing O fficer Lesa Sorrentino with the enviable assignment of flying to France to play champagne scouts. e minute the duo visited Maurice Philippart Champagne House, an eighth-generation champagne producer in Chigny-les-Roses, near Reims, they knew they’d clinked flutes with a champagne maker up to the challenge.

Phillipart produced di fferent assemblages to showcase di fferent flavor profiles, then asked the duo to conduct blind taste tests. Stroud and Sorrentino picked their favorites and shipped them back to see how they paired with Perry’s offerings. Everyone agreed: Here was a champagne worthy of a Perry’s label. ey’ve wrapped it with a white wrap with full gold stenciled letterings—rather than your traditional dark and brooding champagne sticker—and sent bottles to all of their locations.

DINNER DATE

If you want to know why Perry’s been Oak Brook’s steakhouse anchor since 2013, consider all the time and trouble went into that champagne. at’s simply the Perry’s way.

After all, Perry’s began its life as a butcher shop in Houston, a heritage that everyone seems intent on protecting rather than exploiting. Giant slabs of beef are still shipped to all of Perry’s locations, where they are broken down by hand by area butchers.

eir steaks are seasoned with restraint, slid beneath a 2,000degree broiler until they develop a mahogany crust, before they are lacquered in a proprietary steak butter. Our particular ribeye arrived as advertised: matted with flavor, glistening in its own juices. It was unapologetically decadent.

When you serve as many steaks as Perry’s does, you can strike deals with respected cattlemen. Perry’s Reserve Akashi Wagyu are sourced from Beeman Family Ranch in Texas, while their A5 Wagyu is imported from Japan. Before anything reaches your

Eagle-eyed guest who visit Oak Brook will notice that camouflaged somewhere within the sleek décor—complete with gleaming chandeliers and oversized black-and-white portraits of cattle—is a butcher’s cleaver. Every time a new location is opened, Perry’s christens the new shop by cutting it with a clever.

plate, corporate chef Daniel DeLorensi makes sure to visit farms and ranches across the country, scouting the country’s for topquality beef and trusted partners.

Premier Cru Champagne accompanied by Champagne Biscuits

at ceremonial cleaver is then hung on one of the restaurant’s walls as a physical reminder of the chain’s commitment to sourcing, butchering and preparing steaks the way that founder Bob Perry did it back in Houston over four decades ago. eir effort to create their own champagne was inspired by the same ethos: find the best, respect the craft and make it feel modern. When Stroud and Sorrentino returned from their trip, they didn’t just bring back their favorite bubbly; they imported a sweet tradition from France’s storied champagne region: the twice-baked French biscuits served in cafes across the area. ese pink biscuits have been enjoyed in the region since the 1600s. ey were named biscuits in honor of the French term “ bis cuites,” which means twice cooked. Since Rheims acted as a coronation site for French monarchs, legend has it future kings and queens used to dip these biscuits in their champagne on the eve of their coronation. If they stayed whole, it foretold a peaceful reign. Which is why every glass and bottle or Perry’s Premiere Grand Cru comes with an Americanized version of that biscuit. Dunk it once, dunk it twice. If your dinner (or holiday) ends in peace, don’t question the tradition. Just keep sipping. is blend of quality and whimsy is one of the chief ways Perry’s separates itself from the typical “leather-and-bourbon” machismo of so many other steakhouses. Dinner here isn’t just a meal—it also comes with a side of theater. Cocktails arrive adorned with gold accoutrements, shrouded in veils of smoke and topped with ornate garnishes. Whenever one of Perry’s signature porkchops appears, looking gargantuan enough to wonder if the chain has a secret supplier in Jurassic Park, newbies tend to gasp with delight.

ere’s a certain playfulness to the way Perry’s remixes classic dishes. You can order slices of that same pork chop served hors d’oeuvre style, skewered like smoke-glazed lollipops. e best seasonal offering on the menu, one I hope will become a fixture, is a classic beef Wellington. It’s enveloped in a wild mushroom duxelles, liberally seasoned with pepper and sealed within a perfectly baked pu ff pastry armor. Even some of the sides come bearing surprises, included breaded asparagus topped with jumbo crab meat.

You go to Perry’s knowing you’re going to eat well, to enjoy a Texas-sized meals wrapped up nicely in Oak Brook elegance. But you’re likely to return because Perry’s keeps tinkering, always eager to slip new surprises into the menu—some seasonal, some downright effervescent.

Which brings us back to the bubbles. ere’s a good chance, by the end of your mal, that you’ll feel the urge to raise another glass, feeling vaguely aristocratic, slightly rebellious and very well-fed. And if you find yourself asking who really rules Oak Brook tonight, you may already know the answer.

Perry’s Steakhouse is located at 5 Oakbrook Center in Oak Brook. Call 630.571.1808 or visit perryssteakhouse.com.

ere is a welcome dose of magic to be found Perry’s cocktail list, which glints, glows and smokes in the most unexpected ways

A ROMAN REVERIE

Eager to catch a glimpse of the new pope and lured by a Caravaggio exhibition my daughter and I set o to explore the Eternal City.

With last spring’s excitement surrounding the appointment of the first U.S.-born pope— and especially as Pope Leo XIV hails from Chicago—my daughter and I were inspired to visit Rome. Adding to the inspiration was the blockbuster Caravaggio exhibition at the Palazzo Barberini—I’ve long adored the work of this brilliant, if tempestuous, genius. So, in May, we said addio to the North Shore and buongiorno to Rome!

STAY

e Anantara Palazzo Naiadi, an opulent 19th-century marble palace overlooking Piazza della Repubblica, served as our home base. Deriving its name from the Sanskrit word meaning “without end,” the luxury hotel group Anantara promises unforgettable journeys rooted in local culture, beauty, and a sense of movement—and its Roman outpost more than delivered. A member of e Leading Hotels of the World,

Anantara Palazzo Naiadi hotel facade

JOURNEYS

Palazzo Naiadi is steeped in a history dating back to the splendor of ancient Rome. e neoclassical palace overlooks the grand Fountain of the Naiads and sits directly atop the ancient Diocletian Baths—a vast thermal complex built between 298 and 306 AD that once served as a social hub for Romans. From the hotel’s lower level, glass floors reveal the baths’ preserved foundations, pools, and mosaics, offering a glimpse into the city’s layered past. e building’s stately facade provides a dramatic welcome, and inside, guests are greeted by a soaring white stucco lobby lined with colonnades and crowned by a glittering Murano glass chandelier. Modern touches, including a striking piece by famed Italian artist Mario Sironi, blend seamlessly with the hotel’s classic elegance.

With 232 rooms, the property offers a full suite of luxury amenities: the Michelin-worthy restaurant INEO, an indulgent Anantara Spa, and a fitness center outfitted with cutting-edge Technogym equipment. Its panoramic rooftop terrace—one of the largest in central Rome—is home to SEEN by Olivier Bar, where cocktails and sunsets are equally unforgettable. An infinity pool completes the rooftop experience, perfect for a post-sightseeing dip.

Our suite situated just above the piazza, offered an elegant retreat at the day’s end with its high ceilings and a glorious crown molding—possibly the most ornate I’ve ever seen. Striped wallpaper, sumptuous bedding, and opulent décor created a regal atmosphere. e enormous marble bathroom felt indulgent, and the Aqua di Parma products added an aromatic element. Our view of the Fountain of the Naiads and the bustling square captivated us, and each night before bed, we’d throw open the windows and people-watch to our hearts’ content. When we weren’t marveling at the splendor of our suite, we were indulging in unforgettable experiences across Rome—starting, of course, with the food.

DINE

An absolute highlight of our stay was dining at INEO, the hotel’s fine dining restaurant. Its name, from the Latin meaning “to enter” or “to begin,” captures the philosophy of Executive Chef Heros De Agostinis, who brings together the flavors and aromas from the many lands that have shaped his decades-long culinary journey.

e ambiance is intimate and elegant; 1960s-style lamps designed by Gae Aulenti cast a warm glow over the rich leather and velvet seating. Every course was a revelation—artfully presented and infused with heritage and innovation. e six-piece amuse-bouche (each bite beautifully balanced on an individual pedestal) set the tone for what would be a seven-course culinary extravaganza. e evening began with Veal Sweetbread in Amalfi Lemon, Artichokes and Green Shiso and Bluefin Tuna Panzanella; then “Tribute to the Master” Cacio and Pepper Spaghetti with Raw Prawns and Lime for the first course; then Muhammara Ravioli with Seafood and Chef’s Baharat for the second; then a divine Black Cod with Lime and Curry, Basil and Zucchini Flowers for the main. To top it all off was a decadent

dessert of Strawberry, Rhubarb, Vanilla, and Cardamom. e expert sommelier paired each course with aromatic, delicious wine.

SEE

As part of our papal adventure, we were fortunate to witness a historic moment—catching Pope Leo XIV’s first Sunday prayer in St. Peter’s Square. Standing in the heart of Rome, surrounded by thousands of well-wishers, was a moment we won’t soon forget.

On your visit, be sure to take advantage of two memorable excursions arranged by Anantara. “Secrets of the Vatican” offered exclusive access to closed-off areas of the Vatican Museums, led by a passionate art historian who brought Renaissance masterpieces to life and revealed hidden papal histories.

at the wheel, we zipped around the city visiting landmarks like the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and the panoramic Janiculum Hill, along with vibrant neighborhoods including Trastevere, Testaccio, and Rione Monti.

One of my favorite places in Rome is the Galleria Borghese, containing a treasure trove of works by Bernini, Caravaggio, and Titian. Bernini’s sculptures have always been a particular favorite (Apollo and Daphne, Pluto and Persephone)—his ability to carve softness and motion into marble is nothing short of miraculous. Even the villa’s ceilings and floors are works of art.

Don’t miss the Galleria’s recently reopened Giardino dell’Uccelliera. Lemon trees and flowering plants flank the path to a beautiful aviary adorned with baroque flourishes and rooftop statuary. e garden is not easy to find, so be sure to ask one of the security guards to reveal its entrance. Note: be sure to purchase your tickets for the Galleria Borghese well in advance—although I bought our tickets weeks ahead of the trip, many of the days and times were already booked.

After the art immersion, we took a break to absorb Rome. A lovely spot to soak in the city is along the Tiber River, under the shade of the stately plane trees that line Via Lungotevere. e tree’s multi-colored bark and expansive canopies are more beautiful than the name might suggest. With St. Peter’s Basilica and Castel Sant’Angelo in the distance, we watched as the locals strolled along the banks of the gently flowing river.

Of course, no trip to Rome is complete without seeing the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. If you’re a history buff, I

highly recommend a guided tour—there is always something new to learn. For a bird’s-eye view of the area, head to the terrace atop the Victor Emmanuel II Monument.

Just next door to the monument is the Capitoline Museums—the oldest public museums in the world, dating back to 1471—offering an extraordinary collection of ancient sculpture and Renaissance masterpieces. e museums border the stunning Piazza del Campidoglio, designed by Michelangelo in the 16th century.

For poetry lovers, a stop at the Keats-Shelley House located next to the Spanish Steps is a must. e museum is dedicated to the Romantic poets John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley and contains a collection of memorabilia, letters, manuscripts, and even a death mask.

To cap off the trip, we were thrilled and fortunate to catch the blockbuster Caravaggio exhibition at Palazzo Barberini, a breathtaking survey of the artist’s work, including rare pieces from private collections. His dramatic lighting and emotional realism never cease to amaze me.

ough our trip was brief, it left a lasting impression. We set out to experience the city through the lens of a pivotal papal moment and the unveiling of a beloved artist’s work. What we found was a vibrant city and living museum, where every street, building, and piazza echo with centuries of history. From religious moments in St. Peter’s Square to awe-inspiring masterpieces, Rome reminded us that history is something you feel, see, and live.

Arrivederci and buon viaggio!

REDEFINING DIVORCE

How Modern Families Are Changing the Conversation.

RETHINKING DIVORCE

Divorce has long carried a reputation for conflict, stress, and social stigma. For decades, the process was often adversarial, leaving families feeling drained and uncertain about the future. Today, however, the conversation around divorce is changing. Modern families are approaching separation with a greater emphasis on collaboration, emotional well-being, and practical planning. is shift reflects a broader understanding that divorce is not simply a legal transaction but a major life transition that touches every aspect of family life, from parenting and finances to communication and personal growth.

THE MODERN FAMILY

Families today are increasingly diverse. Blended households, dual-career parents, co-parenting arrangements, and LGBTQ+ families have all changed the way we think about family structure. ese realities influence what matters most during a separation: maintaining healthy relationships, ensuring the stability of children, and finding solutions that make sense for each household. Decisions are no longer driven solely by legal strategy; they are guided by emotional considerations, practical realities, and the long-term well-being of everyone involved. Recognizing these priorities allows families to approach divorce not as a battle to be won, but as a process to be navigated thoughtfully.

HOW FAMILY LAW HAS EVOLVED

Family law has adapted to meet these changing needs. Approaches such as mediation, collaborative law, and structured co-parenting plans offer alternatives to purely adversarial proceedings. Technology has also made the process more accessible, with virtual court appearances and digital documentation helping reduce stress. Our firm offers a supportive in-house divorce coach to assist clients in managing the emotional aspects of separation, providing guidance on co-parenting, decision-making, and self-care. By addressing the emotional side alongside legal considerations, clients can approach each step of divorce with greater clarity and confidence.

COMPASSION AND COMMUNICATION

Compassion and communication are at the heart of modern divorce. Attorneys and professionals are increasingly focused on guiding clients through di fficult decisions rather than merely advocating for one side. Empathy, active listening, and collaboration can reduce conflict and create a more constructive path forward. When families feel understood and supported,

the process becomes less about winning and losing and more about creating arrangements that work long-term.

REDEFINING SUCCESS

Success in divorce is being redefined. It is no longer measured solely by legal or financial outcomes. Modern success emphasizes emotional well-being, sustainable parenting arrangements, and the ability to move forward with dignity. Families are learning that separation can be a transition filled with opportunity, growth, and the chance to establish healthier dynamics for the future.

A HOPEFUL FUTURE

e conversation around divorce is changing because the needs of families are changing. By combining thoughtful legal guidance with compassion, communication, and supportive resources like divorce coaching, modern divorce can be navigated in ways that protect relationships, reduce stress, and foster resilience. For today’s families, the goal is clear: move forward with clarity, confidence, and care for everyone involved, creating a foundation for healthy futures and stronger family connections.

A Life Of Intention

After creating deep connections in Paris, London, and Abu Dhabi, Catherine Sarr now calls Hinsdale home for her family and her Almasika jewelry boutique.

One of the great joys of any trip to Paris is wandering down arcades and up stairwells in search of special treasures. Jewelry designer and patron of the arts Catherine Sarr has brought a touch of that magic to her newest Almasika boutique and showroom on Hinsdale Avenue.

Born in the Champagne region of France and raised between her hometown and Paris, Catherine has since lived and worked on three continents. Her path has taken her from Paris and London—where she met her husband—to Abu Dhabi, Chicago, and now Hinsdale. Her children inspired the move, asking their

collection. “We had a wonderful opening packed with Hinsdaleans and feel quite welcomed to the community,” Catherine says.

She believes her timeless pieces speak to the sophisticated collectors who live in the area. Her design approach is understated in look and silhouette, every piece tells a story, and she is devoted to honoring the cultural craftspeople with whom she works. is informed approach creates truly special pieces meant to worn, loved, and passed down to future generations.

“Jewelry is one of the fastest-growing categories in luxury, and what excites me most is how customers are becoming more discerning. ey care about where things come from, how they are made, and what they mean. As the founder of a fine jewelry brand rooted in cultural connection and craftsmanship, it is encouraging to see a growing appreciation for thoughtful design that carry intention and speak to something deeper than trend.”

“It’ s a similar quiet

life,

After exploring other communities, Hinsdale won their hearts and now it’s home. “It feels wonderful to put the suitcases down. We’ve made a real commitment to building a life here,” Catherine says. ey are members at Hinsdale Golf Club, where Catherine enjoys hearing the stories of multigenerational Hinsdale families. “I hope people know how lucky they are to have these traditions,” she says, adding, “It’s delightful to learn that a grandmother, then the mother, and a now a daughter is growing up in the same schools and activities.”

just thousands of miles away.”

“Chris Pequet really welcomed us, and the village mentality was apparent. It reminds me of where I grew up in the Champagne region. It’s a similar quiet life, just thousands of miles away.”

It's no coincidence that Catherine appreciates these generational tales. A hallmark of the Almasika collection is embracing global traditions to create sculptural jewelry rooted in the universal symbols and stories spanning generations and cultures. “I’m always looking for what we have in common with others,” she says.

Hinsdale has embraced Catherine and her exquisite jewelry

such as Bergdorf Goodman, net-a-porter, Moda Operandi, and Neiman Marcus.

Brands like Louis Vuitton relied on Catherine’s knowledge, taste, and sense of style as she guided strategy, design, and public relations. After years in the luxury and diamond industries, including at De Beers Group, she launched Almasika to create jewelry that speaks to a shared human story. Her pieces have been worn by former First Lady Michelle Obama, Alicia Keys, Priyanka Chopra, and Reese Witherspoon, and are stocked at leading retailers

A civic-minded cultural advocate, Catherine and her husband, Mamadou-Abou Sarr co-founded the Prix Sarr at Beaux-Arts de Paris. She was named Chevalier (Knight) de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. Catherine has been a speaker at Art Basel, awarded the Dorchester Industries Experimental Design Lab by Miuccia Prada, serves on high profile international art boards, and is a part of high-profile

gallery and auction house exhibits around the world.

She and her husband are influential in the international art scene and collectors themselves. e couple have established e Sarr Art Prize, which awards three students at the Beaux-Arts de Paris Euros for their studies and living expenses, and one winner also receives a one-month residency at the Villa Albertine in Chicago. “It’s a link between the two worlds,” Catherine says.

A visit to the Almasika boutique offers not just the chance to view the jewelry, but also pieces from their art collection, objects by French artisans, and an utterly charming mural of Paris Catherine commissioned a Parisian artist living in Chicago to paint. It is the most relaxing and inspiring space and a unique shopping experience. Appointments are available, and the boutique will be open on Saturdays in December and during the Hinsdale Christmas Walk on Friday, December 5.

e Sarr family celebrates the holidays as a family by visiting Paris or hosting family here in the U.S. On either side of the Atlantic, these weeks at the end of the year are for togetherness and appreciation. Of course, with her incredible eye and ability to translate art and culture, there might be the beginnings of a new collection in some part of the celebrations.

Catherine’s elegant demeanor is that of someone honored throughout the world, but really just getting started. Her vision of luxury is an incredible addition to our community and the Chicago art, fashion, and design scenes. How lucky we are to have this global brand and the genius behind it based here.

The Junior Board of the Hinsdale chapter of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago Auxiliary ring bells and raise spirits for the children served by IWS Family Health.

It’s not just elves making magic this holiday season, it’s also the Junior Board of the Hinsdale chapter of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago Auxiliary (HIWS). is group of dedicated young people can often be spotted outside the Grant Square retailers, on Hinsdale Avenue by Page’s or Starbucks, or on First Street by Hinsdale Bank & Trust during the month of December. While others in Gen Z might occasionally avoid interacting with strangers, the Juniors boldly ring the bell, share information about their mission, and collect donations.

Funds raised go towards special projects of HIWS in support of IWS Family Health. ese include Angel Baby Bags, packed by the Juniors with everything a new mother might need, and hats, gloves, and scarves to accompany warm coats from the coat drive.

“It’s nice to know that these babies will start off with everything they need to feel loved, and it’s nice that the mother’s don’t have to worry about putting it all together,” says Junior Board President Lola Maduri. Lola has been a member for four years. She’s a leadership powerhouse, serving on other junior boards around the area and on several Hinsdale Central clubs.

Once the calendar flips to 2026, the group will turn its focus to planning their vignette for Tablescapes. “ e New York, New York theme is fun and inspires tons of ideas. We can’t wait for everyone

Junior Board members will help in dozens of ways on Tablescapes day. From setting up, helping winners check-out with their auction and raffle winnings, and even loading up cars at the end of the day, they do it all. e group meets once a month, plus any volunteer shifts. It’s an admirable use of time for a group comprised of eighth through twelfth graders, all of whom participate in clubs, sports, and activities, along with rigorous academics at their high schools.

“It’s never too soon to learn the importance of giving back,” says Ginger Kroll, Lily’s mother and one of two HIWS members who guide the Junior Board. “We’re so proud of them, and count on them in a hundred ways,” adds Megan Maduri, who also works with the Juniors.

When you spot these young philanthropists around town this month, drop a donation in their bucket. ey are doing the good work of taking care of others. Celebrate them with the knowledge that our neighbors in Chicago are better off because of their big hearts and dedication.

Chanel DaSilva, the first Black woman to choreograph a mainstage work for the Jo rey Ballet, returns to Chicago with Wabash & You.

W“hen I was a teenager, in order to see dance, you had to go to the theater,” recalls choreographer Chanel DaSilva. “Or go to the Public Library for the Performing Arts in Lincoln Center and pop in a VHS tape. Young people today can just type in a few words on their smartphone and find anything they want immediately, which takes away from the understanding that this craft, this art form, takes time, patience, commitment, and discipline to master.” at said, the New York-based DaSilva is no Luddite. During the pandemic, she saw her first piece for the Joff rey Ballet premiere digitally. “It reached thousands and thousands of people across the country and the world that it would not have

in the theater alone. My duty now is to continue to honor the discipline and rigor that it takes to be a professional dancer and choreographer that I learned from my teachers, and to also not become a dinosaur and lean into the possibilities of how dance is viewed and shared in the future.”

DaSilva, who has created works for several dance companies, including Parsons Dance, Ballet Memphis, and Dallas Black Dance eatre, is debuting her third piece for the Joff rey, Wabash & You, at the Harris eater for Music and Dance from November 6 to 9. “Set in downtown Chicago, the piece,” shares DaSilva, “is a modern twist on the classic girl-meets-boy story. It is a love letter to the city of Chicago and to the hopeless romantic that lives within us all.”

Dance has defined DaSilva’s life practically from the start. She began classes at age 3 in Queens, New York, “and 36 years later, I have never looked back.” She attended Juilliard, where the training consisted primarily of ballet and the modern dance techniques of Martha Graham, José Limón, Lester Horton, Merce Cunningham, and Paul Taylor. After earning her degree, DaSilva launched her performing career, first as a member of the Trey McIntyre Project, and later, with the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company. “Trey McIntyre is one of my favorite choreographers. Being able to dance in his work and be in the room as he created so many illustrious masterpieces taught me the delicate

balance of how to be both literal and abstract at the same time in choreographic storytelling. My time dancing with Lar Lubovitch taught me how to use bodies in space as brushstrokes, to paint the canvas of the stage by following the energy and momentum.”

Grateful for the mentors who have helped her become the artist she is, and mindful of how difficult it is to fashion a life in the arts, DaSilva and partner and fellow dancer, Nigel Campbell, founded MOVE|NYC|, a civic arts and justice organization committed to advancing diversity and equity in the dance field and beyond. “It was born out of our lived experiences as Black and Brown dancers in the classical and contemporary dance fields,” explains DaSilva. “I am from East New York in Brooklyn, and for many reasons, I could have been one of the young pre-professional artists of color whose rise into the classical ballet and contemporary dance fields was thwarted due to social and financial barriers. Historically, the price tag for a young dancer to train rigorously in ballet and modern techniques is well beyond the means of the average family, with scholarships few and far between, especially for young Black and Brown women. Historically, college conservatories and training programs for dance, whose graduates go on to join these companies, are racially homogeneous. And thus, historically, we then have a classical and contemporary ballet field that has a very low percentage of Black and Brown dancers in the company and in leadership.”

Focusing on mentorship, professional development, and dance training for individuals aged 13-22, MOVE|NYC| aims to provide aspiring artists with the skills, opportunities, and platforms they need to succeed. “In just a decade,” observes DaSilva, “we’ve seen a visible shift in the racial demographics of institutions that were often out of reach for many young people of color.”

Like any self-aware artist, DaSilva knows that, successes aside, she is still growing herself. And she credits her experience at the Joff rey as key to her creative evolution. “I could truly go on for days about how my affiliation with this iconic institution has catapulted my choreographic career,” states DaSilva. “When I collaborate with the Joffrey Ballet on a new work, the ceiling for what I can imagine is removed. As a choreographer who is still establishing myself and who doesn’t want to become stagnant, that’s the best feeling! To know that I have that level of trust, support, and encouragement makes the art of creation feel boundless.”

Let’s face it. Nowadays, aesthetics often outpaces authenticity. As social media and modern culture continue to shape our tastes and desires, it’s easy to forget what’s real. However, Dr. Paula S. Malhotra has created something refreshingly rare.

Reimagining the modern dermatology experience, the founder of SKN Institute Medical & Cosmetic Dermatology in Elmhurst and board-certified dermatologist, blends science, artistry, and compassion—delivering care that’s as sophisticated as it is sincere.

“I wanted to create a space where patients feel genuinely seen and cared for,” says Dr. Malhotra. “At SKN Institute, every treatment plan is personalized, every visit is intentional, and every result is grounded in science - and designed to reveal natural, confident beauty.”

With more than 14 years of experience, including a decade practicing and teaching medical and cosmetic dermatology at Northwestern Medicine, Dr. Malhotra built her career on compassion as much as clinical skill. A graduate of Saint Louis University and the University of Louisville, where she later served as Chief Resident in dermatology, she began her journey in academic medicine before realizing that true impact lies in connection. Today, her practice is defined by both precision and empathy—a methodical, evidence-based approach grounded in a deep understanding of each patient’s personal journey and how their skin affects their overall well-being.

“Great dermatology isn’t about chasing trends,” she says. “It’s about balance, authenticity, and helping people look and feel like the best version of themselves. Sometimes, less really is more.”

Her expertise spans both medical and aesthetic dermatology, treating everything from acne, eczema, psoriasis, skin cancer, and benign growths, alongside her refined expertise in aesthetic dermatology—including injectables (Botox®, Dysport®, Juvederm®, Restylane®, Sculptra®, Kybella®, PRP), advanced laser therapies,

Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Malhotra leads a life grounded in purpose and joy. A resident of the Western Suburbs, she is a devoted wife, mother of two young boys, and selfdescribed wellness enthusiast who loves to travel, play tennis, and spend time with her family.

In many ways, that balance defines SKN Institute itself: a place where precision meets artistry, innovation meets empathy, and confidence begins with care. For Dr. Malhotra, skin health isn’t simply about how we look—it’s about how we feel in our own skin.

EMBRACE MIXED METALS

Combine the warmth of yellow gold, the sleek sheen of white gold and the romantic glow of rose gold for a look that feels elevated and on-trend. Today, jewelry customization has reached a new level of self-expression. You can design your own piece by choosing the metal, gemstones, engraving, style, size, or shape.

MIX, MATCH, AND LAYER NECKLACES

Create dimension by pairing necklaces of different lengths, textures, and styles. Mix delicate chains with pendants or add a bold link to anchor the look. A good guideline is to vary necklace lengths by about two to four inches between each layer. is spacing creates enough separation for each piece to stand out while still feeling cohesive. For example, try pairing a

16-inch choker with an 18-inch pendant and a 20-inch chain for natural movement and balance.

UNEXPECTED PAIRINGS

e holiday season is the perfect time to embrace your personal style through unexpected combinations. Mix diamond shapes—round with emerald or pear cuts—for a more distinctive look. Try stacking rings across different fingers or adding a diamond to your pinky for a modern, celebratory touch. ese creative pairings bring a sense of self to your style, proving that luxury shines brightest when it reflects you.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IS ESSENTIAL TO

HEALTHY AGING.

As we get older, our energy levels decrease, our bones become frail, and our risk of falling increases. Having a smart exercise regime is an important health recommendation we instruct our senior patients to prevent some of these problems.

It’s important for seniors to stay active and move more and sit less during any given day. Moderate intensity activities include walking briskly ( ree miles per hour speed), water aerobics, biking, tennis, ballroom dancing, and general gardening. Vigorous intensity exercise includes race walking, swimming laps, jump roping, heavy gardening or uphill hiking.

A good way to measure your intensity is by the target heart rate. We estimate between 64-76 percent of the maximum heart rate. For moderate-intensity physical activity, the age-related heart rate would be calculated as 220-50 = 170 beats per minute (bpm). 64 to 76 percent of that level would be 109 to 129 bpm. For vigorous-

intensity physical activity the percentages are higher at 77 to 93 percent or 142 to 172 bpm in that same example.

It is important to know how to check your heartrate. First, stop exercising briefly to take your pulse. You can take your pulse at your neck, wrist, or chest. We recommend the wrist. You can feel the radial pulse on the artery of the wrist in line with the thumb. Place the tips of the index and middle fingers over the artery and press lightly. Do not use the thumb as it has its own pulse. Take a full 60-second count of the heartbeat or take for 30 seconds and multiply by two.

e recommendation for older adults is around 30 minutes, five days per week of moderate intensity activity like brisk walking. Along with this, two days a week of muscle strengthening and improving balance type exercises.

Seniors may have limitations to exercise from medical problems like hip fractures, stroke, or osteoarthritis. Physical therapy can be an important resource to help design a specific exercise program that fits the limitations. Many of the senior communities we visit our patients in, have great exercise programs, gait and balance activities, and on-site physical therapy.

ere are great ways to be physically active while still socially distancing. ese include household chores, increase activity or exercise while watching TV, or outdoor activities like walking, light to moderate yard work, and house cleaning. Working closely with your physician is also very important. is will help maximize exercise goals while protect you from further potential injury.
