HOW THE BID-OFF WORKS:
The Bid-Off will take place online through www.DVAuction.com. Several individuals will be available to place bids for individuals in-person or over the phone.
Bidding Opens – Friday, March 20 at Noon
Bidding Closes – Saturday, March 21 at 1:00 PM CST with a horse race finish.

Bulls purchased sight unseen come with a 100% satisfaction guarantee upon delivery. If any bulls are available after the kick-off day, they will be sold privately on a first come, first serve basis. Bulls are considered sold once payment has been received.

DELIVERY:
Free Delivery on bulls within 250 miles or credit towards the first 250 miles. $100 will be deducted from each bull if taken home sale weekend. This applies to purchases over $5,000. Bulls will be delivered in April.
HEALTH & TESTING:
Both Charolais and Angus bulls have been semen tested and passed a breeding soundness exam prior to the sale. All bulls are virgin bulls. They will sell with proper health certificates issued by Stuart Vet Clinic, Stuart, IA including a negative Trich test. They have been boostered witih ViraShield 6 and poured with Cydectin. All the work has been done. They are ready to turn out and go to work for you.
FEEDING & CARE:
For your convenience, you can leave your bull here to continue to be developed until May 1st. This service is provided to customers free of charge for the base price listed on each bull. After April 1st, there will be a charge of $6.00/head/day. We will do everything in our power to keep the bulls safe and healthy. However, once sold, they become the property and risk of the purchaser.

As I write this between sale preparations and calving checks with the long days and late nights this time of year, I’m reminded of why I do this. It’s for the customers, now friends, that have been made and success stories of those impacted through my herd. Your success is our success. This year’s set of bulls may be smaller than the last few years due to a large heifer crop but WOW, is it impressive! Hopefully it will bring you lots of future success. Be sure to tell us about it!
We’ve tried to continue to improve the product offered to you, our customer. DNA samples were sent in on all Charolais bulls this year. This means sires have been verified, enhanced EPDs are available, and genetic conditions tested for. We had a hick-up at the lab with the yearling group so their enhanced EPDs won’t be available until April 1st. We are also starting this on our females so parentage and EPDs will be even more accurate in the future.
This year the bid-off is moving to an online format through DVAuction. This change was made in hopes of bringing more flexibility to our customers by offering another avenue to bid. Our Open House with complimentary brisket lunch will continue with in-person bidding and watch party when the sale closes at 1:00pm. We hope you’ll join us. BULL GUARANTEE:
All bulls are guaranteed to be fertile and come with a one breeding season guarantee. This applies to reproductive soundness and feet. Breeding season is defined as 90 days following the first turn out of the bulls. Please notify us as soon as possible when an injury occurs. Injuries must be examined by a veterinarian. If a suitable bull is available for replacement, we will replace the bull. If there is no replacement available, you will be given sale credit at our next sale towards the purchase of a replacement bull minus salvage value.

This bull was purchased on the side of his first-calf-heifer dam as a calf and raised here since he was about a month old. When I made the purchase, it was the intention of his dam going into the donor pen to flush and he was the coupon. The mating sure worked! He’s knocking it out of the park from a phenotypic and numbers perspective. I probably should have pictured him with his clean lines and great look, but my crew would have gone on strike if I tried to do them all. Be sure to check out his video! Retaining 25% semen interest.
An ET calf with the Ledger x Grid Maker x Clarice mating is a no miss mating. I’ve offered full brothers to this bull in the past, have used one as a herd bull, and have females in the herd that always rise to the top. The only Jubal sired fall bull but be sure to look at his half-brothers in the yearling section. Jubal is working well in our operation as an option to add some calving ease without sacrificing performance. His sons are consistent in their kind with calving ease, growth, and good frame size.
Our home-raised herd sire, SAS Cool Ledger 8010 and his dam 582 will leave a lasting legacy on our herd. The sons in this offering make it easy to see why (Lots 4-6 and 15-17). 8010 was the first calf 582 had and was originally kept to use as clean-up on heifers. After a couple seasons, he got too big to use on heifers and was sold to a friend in NE to put on commercial cows.
Before he left, I had him collected because I liked what I was seeing from his limited progeny and wanted to use him AI. As his progeny started to produce themselves, I wish I’d never let him leave. Lucky for me, Dan got a call when the friend decided to sell his cows and we were able to buy him back. He’s been used heavy in my AI program and naturally because I know he works. Now, at 8-years-old, he’s once again at Hawkeye Breeders getting collected after being used in the fall herd because I ran out of my original inventory.
Heifer safe, calving ease specialist, great feet that have never been touched, calves have lots of vigor, growth and the fancy look. When a neighbor asked to borrow a bull to use on a show heifer and 8010 stepped off the trailer he said he wasn’t even going to be disappointed if she didn’t stick AI.
His dam, 582, can be described in a very simple way… Fancy. That one word doesn’t do this female justice. She was purchased as a bred heifer from the Southern Cattle Dispersal Sale shortly after her mother made waves as a high-selling lot in the M&M Dispersal. A phenotypic gem with performance to match. Her calves have had an average weaning ratio of 111. Every calf has ended up in the bull sale – with several high sellers – or female replacement pen. She has a wonderful disposition and great udder. She is a Sterling Dam of Distinction in the Charolais Breed. At 10 years of age, her final natural calf is Lot 29.

The youngest 8010 son on the sale, he has all the right pieces. It’s fun to watch him grow and develop. He has three generations of SAS females in his pedigree and goes back to one of the original cows from my dad when I started my herd in 2013. 212 is one of the few females his granddam 503 produced instead she had several high-selling bulls in some of my first sales.
Ironically, the one we chose to picture from this sire group is a twin. The dam sure did a great job raising him!! Several individuals looking through the bull pen have been surprised to hear he was a twin. His dam is a large-framed Watt daughter. He’ll be sure to put pounds on his calves and would make great females too.

This bull has an interesting pedigree in both his sire and dam. He is sired by Jubal, the first and only son of the now deceased Pleasant Dawn Chisum to sell in the US. In Canada, Chisum was a proven big spread bull with an elite top 1% for marbling. Jubal himself is deep flanked and soft made with a long, deep muscle pattern he passes on to his offspring. He easily and consistently stamps his offspring with performance, growth, frame and a great disposition. As daughters are coming into production, they are proving themselves to be excellent mothers with beautiful udders.
The New Germaine 608 donor is a whale of a cow! She has a ton of performance, dimension, a big middle and is easy on the eyes. She’s a full sister to the noteworthy 484 female who topped the M6 Ranch Dispersal at $36,000 who has produced several impressive offspring including SVY Ms Germaine 236K, a donor for Lindskov LT Ranch and SVY Historic 2421, now owned by Select Sires.
The Germaine family has made a huge impact on the breed. 608 was a herd favorite of Jerry Mullins when visiting from FL. A direct daughter sold to Rennert Ranch as a bred heifer where she had the privilege of entering their donor program at a young age. She is the kind of female that always produces good ones.

This bull was born last winter during a week of frigid temps. I’ll never know why his dam decided to lay down and have him outside when the warm calving barn was feet away. She was too far advanced in her labor to move her inside but this guy got the trip to the warming box as soon as he hit the ground. His ears still got a little short but that hasn’t stopped him. His dam goes back to one of our original herd sires, Big Flirt. He was a bull making machine! Unfortunately, he only left a few daughters in the herd but each one is GOOD including the dam of this bull. Great mothers, beautiful udders and dispositions with the growth, carcass traits, and frame passed along from Big Flirt. Paired with Jubal as a second calver you’ll get a well rounded bull that will work great however he’s used.

The calving ease Jubal brings to the table has been a pleasant surprise. I used him AI on most of my second-calf-heifers two years ago and you’re seeing the results. She purchased some bred heifers from me to start her Charolais herd and a bull a few years ago when she worked for me during high school. This is one of those bulls that is hard to write footnotes about. His dam is a solid producer that does everything right but isn’t flashy. His EPDs aren’t anything super to brag about. However, he’s made the tough cut because he’s met the criteria to be a keeper and make the sale pen and he has the look to get himself pictured. I’d take a close look at him. He’ll breed cows and might work the best when you get him home.

I had to do some arm twisting to convince Dan to keep the dam of this bull. She was out of the first calf crop after the herd was purchased from Rex Whilhelm. Only two bred heifers were kept that year and this was one of them because her dam, 511 is a Pathfinder. Boy am I sure glad I did that convincing! Using EPDs for Selection:
Cattle Evaluations use the term Expected Progeny Differences (EPD) to express genetic transmitting ability of a sire for the various traits listed. An EPD is a prediction of how future progeny of a sire are expected to perform in a particular trait relative to other sires in the analysis. The key word is “difference”. The EPD itself does not imply “good” or “bad” performance. But rather, the EPD gives a prediction of the average difference to expect in the performance of a sire’s progeny relative to other sires in the same analysis.

Calving Ease Direct (CE) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births in first calf heifers. A higher value indicates greater calving ease.

Weaning Weight (WW) The expected difference in average weaning weight of calves.
Yearling Weight (YW) The expected difference in average yearling weight of progeny.

Calving Ease Maternal (MCE) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births in first calf daughters. A higher value indicates greater calving ease.

Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC) (expressed in centimeters) of a bull’s or dam’s male offspring at yearling.
Carcass Weight (CW) predictor of pounds of retail product at a constant age endpoint. Selection for increased values should result in heavier carcasses.
Ribeye Area (REA) a major component of the USDA yield grade equation and selection for increased ribeye area should result in larger ribeyes and lower yield grades between animals with the same carcass weight.
Fat Thickness (FAT) Fat thickness has a negative relationship to cutability; therefore, selection base on decreased fat thickness should result in lower yield grades and leaner cattle given the same age endpoint.
Marbling Score (MARB) selection for increased Marbling Score EPD should result in cattle with higher quality grades at the same age endpoints.

Grid Value ($G) - Angus, an index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.
Beef Value ($B) - Angus, a terminal index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning and carcass traits. This terminal index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase and market these animals on a carcass grid.
Combined Value ($C) - Angus, an index, expressed in dollars per head, which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B).
