Creating Experiences That Bring the Community Together

If you’ve attended a recent community event, spent a summer afternoon at the Pool House, or noticed thoughtful updates throughout the Club, you’ve already experienced the ongoing work happening behind the scenes to enhance life at Somersett. Through collaboration, creativity, and careful planning, the Somersett team continues to focus on creating welcoming spaces and memorable experiences for residents year-round.

Over the past year, efforts have centered on elevating both everyday amenities and signature events. At the Pool House, enhancements to menu offerings, streamlined service, and popular additions like poolside food delivery helped create a more relaxed and enjoyable summer atmosphere. Equally important has been the investment in staff development, with many team members hired from within the community. Staff gain valuable experience in customer service, communication, and teamwork while contributing to a positive, servicefocused environment.

As summer approaches, residents can look forward to the return of cherished traditions alongside fresh opportunities to gather and connect. Weekly favorites like Taco Thursdays and seasonal specials will once again anchor the Pool House experience, enhanced by continued attention to service, efficiency, and guest comfort. Many familiar staff members will return this season, providing continuity and the chance

to mentor new team members joining the summer crew. At the same time, new staff will benefit from the guidance and support of our experienced team, ensuring a welcoming experience for everyone.

The Pool House also serves as the backdrop for several of the community’s most anticipated celebrations, including the Memorial Day Bash, Independence Day Bash, and Labor Day Bash. Planning for these events begins months in advance, with the team collaborating across departments to design experiences that feel festive, seamless, and uniquely Somersett.

Beyond events, ongoing design enhancements throughout the Club continue to elevate how residents gather and connect. Recent updates to shared spaces — including new carpeting, fresh paint, and refreshed meeting and activity rooms — reflect a collaborative effort among hospitality, management, and maintenance teams to create environments that are both functional and welcoming for members and guests.

Looking ahead, residents can expect hands-on workshops, Signature events, and seasonal experiences designed to bring neighbors together in new ways. From creative gatherings to social celebrations, we look forward to you joining us in connection, collaboration, and community.

BOARD MESSAGE Strategic Reinvestment in Somersett

Spring in Somersett is always a season of renewal. As the days grow longer and our hillsides begin to turn green, it’s a natural time to reflect on the work underway throughout our community. Guided by the Board’s Strategic Plan and long-standing commitment to reinvestment, we remain focused on protecting property values, enhancing amenities, and ensuring Somersett remains one of Northern Nevada’s premier master-planned communities.

This year’s projects reflect a balanced approach-prioritizing infrastructure, safety, aesthetics, and thoughtful improvements to the spaces where we live, gather, and connect.

Investing in Infrastructure & Safety

A strong community begins with strong infrastructure. Several projects currently in progress are focused on long-term stability, preservation, and proactive maintenance:

• Sierra Trail Assessment (PROJ 25-003) - Evaluating trail conditions to ensure safe and enjoyable access for residents.

• The Cut Stabilization (PROJ 25-013) - Addressing erosion and slope stability to protect surrounding property and roadways.

• Erosion Near Antler Point and Autumn Ridge (PROJ 25-027) - Proactive mitigation to prevent future damage.

• 2026 Private Street Maintenance (PROJ 26-003) - Preserving roadway quality and extending pavement life.

• 2025 Stormwater Basin Maintenance (PROJ 26-008) and Drainage Ditches Assessment (PROJ 26-007) - Maintaining proper drainage systems to protect homes and common areas.

Additionally, the Scott Valley Rockery Wall Repair (PROJ 25019) is currently out for bid to ensure structural integrity and aesthetic consistency in the area.

While these projects may not always be highly visible, they are critical to protecting homeowner investments and helping avoid significantly higher costs in the future.

Enhancing Community Spaces

Our Strategic Plan emphasizes reinvestment not just in what supports our community - but also in what brings neighbors together.

At the Club and Town Center (TCTC), we are actively working on improvements that modernize and refresh shared amenities:

• Kitchen, Lobby, and Pool House Redesigns (PROJ 25-023, 25-024, 25-025) - Currently out for bid, these design projects aim to thoughtfully update our most frequently used spaces.

• Carpet Replacement (PROJ 26-019) - Recently completed, providing a refreshed and updated interior environment.

• Locker Room Feasibility Study (PROJ 26-011) - Evaluating options to improve long-term functionality and usability.

• Lower Spa Controls Rewiring (PROJ 26-017) - Currently in progress to maintain reliability and safety.

Additional development projects include interior painting, exterior stair repair, shade sail replacement, electrical updates, cardio room TV controls, lap pool heater replacement, and other facility enhancements.

These improvements reflect our commitment to keeping our amenities competitive, comfortable, and aligned with resident expectations.

Entryways, Landscaping & First Impressions

First impressions matter. The Somersett Entrance Renovation (PROJ 26-001) is currently in progress and designed to enhance the aesthetic appeal of our primary gateway into the community.

We are also preparing for projects such as pond dredging and paver resets at the Village Roundabout - ensuring the details that define Somersett’s character are well maintained.

The Town Center Plaza Project

One of the most exciting developments this spring is the continued progress on the Town Center Plaza Project (PROJ 26-004). This project is designed to improve the vibrancy and functionality of one of our most central gathering spaces. After extensive outreach, we are pleased to share that homeowners within 500 feet of the proposed project have provided approval, demonstrating strong and meaningful support.

We expect to identify our preferred contractor and finalize the project budget in early Q2, following completion of the evaluation process. Through diligent saving, careful

planning, and disciplined project management, we continue to anticipate that no additional costs will be passed on to residents.

Once a contractor is selected, the remaining steps will include completion of final engineering and construction drawings. If timelines remain on track, construction could begin as early as this summer.

This milestone reflects what makes Somersett unique: collaboration, communication, and a shared vision for responsible enhancement. As this project advances, we remain committed to transparency and thoughtful execution to ensure it adds long-term value, vitality, and vibrancy to our community core.

A Strategic Approach to Reinvestment

Every project listed above, whether in development, out for bid, in progress, or complete, represents intentional planning. Through disciplined budgeting, strong reserves, and long-term capital forecasting, we are able to reinvest in Somersett without compromising financial stability.

Our goals remains clear: Protect property values. Strengthen infrastructure. Enhance amenities. Build community.

Spring reminds us that growth requires care and attention. Thanks to your support and engagement, Somersett continues to thrive, not just as a place to live, but as a place we are proud to call home.

None of this work would be possible without the dedication, professionalism, and daily efforts of our outstanding management staff. From coordinating contractors and overseeing bids to managing timelines and ensuring accountability, their behind-the-scenes work is instrumental in turning Board direction into real, measurable results for our community.

We look forward to sharing updates as projects progress throughout the year. If you would like to stay closely connected to any of these initiatives, we encourage you to attend a Board meeting or review the Board packets, which are provided in advance and contain detailed information on active and upcoming projects. Transparency and homeowner involvement remain a priority, and we welcome your engagement as we continue moving Somersett forward together.

Sincerely,

Somersett Events

Spring at the Canyon 9

Course Etiquette and Safety Rules

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all residents and guests, please follow these golf course rules:

• Maintain pace of play – Avoid slow play to keep the course flowing smoothly.

• Care for the course – Repair ball marks, replace divots, and rake bunkers after use.

• Be snake aware – Rattlesnakes are present in the Somersett area. Do not enter natural areas to retrieve golf balls.

• Use soft spikes only – Metal spikes are not allowed on the course.

• No dogs are allowed on the greens or fairways. Dogs must be leashed and kept to the perimeter paths or rough areas. Please avoid walking pets on fairways, greens, or tee boxes. Always pick up after your pet.

Fire Mitigation & Wildfire Preparedness Update

Wildfire preparedness is a year-round effort in Somersett. From fuel reduction work to community evacuation planning, here’s the latest update on how we’re working together to strengthen wildfire resilience.

Since January 1, approximately 31 acres of fire fuel have been mitigated within our community as part of ongoing wildfire preparedness efforts. Working with Deadwood and Acres Forestry, crews have reduced hazardous vegetation east of Heavenly View Trail and in areas surrounding Del Webb Parkway, Back Nine Trail, Fairway Hills Trail, Crescent Point Court, Roanoke Trail, and Hickory Hill Way.

As spring approaches, forestry work will continue on the south hillside between Evening Rock Trail and Shape Hill Circle. In addition, NV Energy is scheduled to construct a fuel break beneath the transmission lines west of Del Webb Parkway, and the United States Forest Service plans to establish a fuel break around its parcel between Sierra Canyon and Mogul. Together, these coordinated efforts strengthen protection across both community and neighboring lands.

May Is Wildfire Awareness Month

Warmer temperatures and drying vegetation increase wildfire risk throughout our region, making awareness and preparation especially important this time of year. The Association continues to reduce fuel loads on HOA-owned parcels identified as priority areas in the Community Wildfire Protection Plan.

However, wildfire resilience is a shared responsibility. Even with community-wide mitigation, homes with heavy vegetation or combustible materials close to structures remain vulnerable during wind-driven fire events.

Research from the U.S. Forest Service shows that most homes lost during wildfires ignite not from radiant heat, but from windcarried embers landing on or near the home.

The most important area to focus on is the 0–5 feet surrounding your home, often called the ember-resistant zone.

Homeowners can reduce risk by:

1. Removing combustible mulch, junipers, pines, and other highhazard woody plants, along with dead leaves, pine needles, weeds, and stored combustible materials.

2. Using noncombustible landscaping such as gravel, decomposed granite, rock, concrete, brick, or pavers.

3. Choosing low-growing, high-moisture, non-woody plants if vegetation is desired near the home. While no plant is fireproof, thoughtful selection can reduce risk.

To support spring vegetation cleanup, Somersett is partnering with the Reno Fire Department to provide disposal opportunities for residents. On Saturday, April 25, three vegetation dumpsters will be available at the Towne Center. Additional dumpster days will be announced throughout the season to help residents create ember-resistant homes.

Preparing for Emergency Evacuation

In an emergency, preparation helps reduce panic and allows residents to act quickly and confidently. Knowing when and how to evacuate before a wildfire occurs can make a critical difference.

To help residents prepare, our community is planning to host an evacuation drill on Saturday, May 30 at 10:00 a.m., conducted in partnership with the Reno Fire Department. The exercise will simulate a potential scenario involving a wind-driven wildfire approaching from the west.

As we get closer to our evacuation drill date, an evacuation preparedness presentation will be held at the Aspen Lodge in Sierra Canyon to share details and answer any questions. Keep an eye on upcoming communications for the confirmed date and time.

Remember, a little preparation today can make a significant difference during an emergency.

Wildfire Preparedness: Build Your Go-Bag

During wildfire season, evacuations may happen with limited notice. Talking through your evacuation plan as a household and preparing a go-bag ahead of time can help reduce stress and ensure you have what you need. Plan for at least 72 hours away from home. The checklist below offers general items to consider including in your go-bag.

◊ Emergency contact list

◊ Medical information and prescriptions list

◊ Home inventory photos (printed or stored digitally)

Quick Tip

During wildfire season, try to keep your vehicle at least half full of gas, or your electric vehicle adequately charged, so you’re ready to leave without delay if an evacuation is required.

A New Soundtrack Close to Home:

Resident Bob Short Releases Solo Album “I Want to Live on Mars”

For many people, music plays quietly in the background of daily life. For Sierra Canyon resident Bob Short, it has been a lifelong companion that recently took center stage with the release of his debut solo album, I Want to Live on Mars.

Bob and his wife, Patty, first discovered Reno while visiting their daughter during a holiday trip to nearby Lake Tahoe several years ago. The area left a lasting impression, and when the time came to consider a move, Somersett quickly rose to the top of their list. Its sweeping views, wide-open landscapes, and easy access to hiking and off-road trails offered a relaxed pace that felt worlds away from the city’s more congested areas.

After touring several homes, they found one that checked every box: a thoughtfully updated home with an ideal layout and stunning mountain vistas. Being within walking distance of the clubhouse and fitness center added everyday convenience, while settling into Sierra Canyon’s 55+ community provided an immediate sense of connection and belonging.

Today, their home serves as both a peaceful retreat and a creative haven. With their first grandchild recently welcomed

into the family, Reno allows them to remain connected while still enjoying the independence and tranquility that first drew them to Somersett. Surrounded by ever-changing mountain scenery and Reno’s uniquely dynamic climate, inspiration often arrives naturally, sometimes in the simple surprise of sitting outdoors in warm sunshine just days after a winter snowfall.

In many ways, that balance of calm, creativity, and renewed energy mirrors the musical chapter Bob has entered.

Bob may be a new face to some neighbors, but his musical journey spans decades. A multi-instrumentalist and longtime bassist for the band Jasmine Tea, he has spent years writing, recording, and collaborating with fellow musicians. The group

has released multiple albums and even recorded alongside legendary songwriter John Sebastian, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee known for his influential work in American folk and rock music.

Yet after years of collaboration, Bob felt inspired to explore something more personal.

“I wanted to see what would happen if I followed my own creative instincts,” he says. “This project gave me the freedom to experiment and tell stories in a different way.”

Rediscovering Creativity

Music was not always Bob’s primary professional focus. After an active start in the college music scene, he pursued careers in acoustics and speaker design before eventually transitioning into finance. Like many passions that pause during busy professional years, music waited patiently in the background until a reunion with former bandmates brought him back into the studio.

Since returning to songwriting and recording, creativity has moved quickly, culminating in a solo project that reflects both experience and curiosity.

Recorded and mixed at Studio 13 in Miami, the album features eight original tracks blending thoughtful songwriting with elements of classic rock energy and modern production. The result is a polished yet deeply personal collection of songs that showcases both technical skill and artistic exploration.

Imagining Lighter Days

The album’s title track, I Want to Live on Mars, captures the spirit behind the project. Using the science of the Red Planet as a playful metaphor, the song explores perspective — imagining

a place where time slows down, gravity feels lighter, and life offers softer landings.

“It’s really about the idea of starting fresh,” Bob explains. “We all feel the weight of life sometimes. The song imagines what it would be like if things felt just a little lighter.”

Humor and reflection weave throughout the album, offering listeners moments of both energy and introspection.

Creativity at Any Stage

For Bob, releasing a solo album is not about stepping away from collaboration, but about expanding creative possibilities.

“Now that I’ve done a solo project, I feel encouraged to keep exploring,” he says. “Some songs naturally fit a band setting, while others feel more personal. It’s exciting to have space for both.”

His story serves as a reminder that creativity does not belong to any single phase of life, and it can take many forms. Patty, an avid artistic crafter, shares this creative spirit, and together they are finding new inspiration in their life and home. Whether rediscovering a longtime passion or exploring something entirely new, creativity can spark at any moment, often when least expected.

I Want to Live on Mars is now available on major streaming platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music. More information about Bob and the album can be found at bobshort.com.

As Somersett continues to grow and evolve, it is residents like Bob and Patty who add new rhythms, stories, and creative energy to the community, proving that sometimes the most exciting journeys begin right at home.
