Beyond Sore:
Preventing and Managing Aches and Pains • Do some light stretching. • Try yoga. • Use a foam roller for about two minutes on each sore
If you live in the mountains, you know the feeling — quads screaming after a long powder day, arms sore from paddling, or legs burning after that first big hike of the season. A little soreness is part of staying active in Tahoe. But how do you know when it’s just muscle fatigue — and when your body is signaling something more serious?
muscle. Start Smart with a Warm-Up Warm-ups help to lessen soreness and reduce risk of injury. Start with five minutes of light cardio, such as brisk walking or riding a stationary bike. Then, take a few minutes to further prepare the muscles you will be working on. This can be done with stretching, or for a more active warm-up, light bodyweight squats. Press Pause on Pain Pain that comes on during or right after physical activity could be a warning sign of an acute injury (think sprained ankle) or overuse injury (such as tennis elbow). If something feels off, stop the activity right away.
Here’s how to manage aches and pains, and when it’s time to seek help. Stay Active for Sore Muscles If you’ve ever tried an activity that wasn’t part of your normal routine — a new strength class or a longer bike ride than usual — you’ve likely felt sore a day or two later. Called delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), this aching and stiffness usually occurs within 24 hours of your activity and typically peaks within 72 hours. The good news: that soreness is normal and a sign that you’re building strength. While it’s tempting to lie on the sofa until the pain subsides, research shows it’s better to take an active approach to recovery. Here’s how to stay active and feel better faster:
Take it seriously if you notice: • Sharp or severe pain, or extreme swelling • You can’t put weight on the affected area • A joint that looks deformed or out of place • Pain or swelling that lingers more than a few days • Pain that keeps coming back when you exercise For mild tweaks, rest, ice, compression, elevation, and over-the-counter pain relief can help. But if symptoms persist, it’s time to check in with a medical professional — before a minor issue turns into a season-ending injury. And always call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, or confusion.

(Deletions are shown in strikethrough type and additions in boldface underlined type) At the August 19th, 2026 Board meeting, the TKPOA Board of Directors adopted the following proposed changes to the Association Architectural Rules.

To clarify Architectural Control Rules to be in conformance with current practices for architectural approvals and align with recent changes in architectural design proposals and City of South Lake Tahoe requirements. The proposed rule changes will permit owners to expand broader architectural designs for the overall aesthetic of the Tahoe Keys as well as provide clarification on what the acceptable standard is for exterior design contrast; landscape fabric installation; AC units; property line and setback delineation when installing, relocating, or reconfiguring boat docks; and bear boxes. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE By Dave Peterson Hot August nights are giving way to shorter days. September is my favorite month at Tahoe; it is still wonderful outside, and the crowds mellow. Drinking Water. Construction officially got underway in mid-August, finally. The TRPA permit took way longer than it should have. One of the first tasks is “potholing”, which is the process of digging small holes here and there to locate underground utilities, because maps are frequently inaccurate. Then the pipeline and well site work will get underway. TRPA dictates that earth-disturbing construction must stop by mid-October, but short extensions can be granted if weather permits. So, we probably won’t see too much progress this year. On the plus side, we haven’t had to draw much money from the loan credit line yet. But March 2027 is the end of the loan draw period, when the loan gets converted to a fixed loan. So, we will request our full remaining authorized amount at that time.

Budgeting. The finance committee reports that the draft budget is nearly complete, and will be presented at the September board meeting. I wait with baited breath (anyone have a Tic Tac?). Off-Leash Dogs. Security issued 104 violations in July, most of which were at the Pavillion beach, which is posted pretty much everywhere. The signs say dogs must be on a leash. I saw that one member clipped a leash to her dog and let it run free, thinking she had found a loophole. But leash laws are clear that the intent is restraint. We have had 2 dog bites, and numerous complaints. At the August meeting, the board referred the issue to the Rules and Enforcement Committed for a recommendation. One option on the table is a complete ban of dogs from the Pavillion area; same as lots A and C at Lighthouse Shores. I’ve made this plea before, but I’ll repeat it: leash requirements are effective on all public areas and common areas in the Keys, so please leash your dogs.
Water use in July was high enough that we pulled 1.8 million gallons through the Lukins Brothers Water Company intertie on 15th street. The abnormally highwater demand seems to be on the west half of the Keys between 10pm and 2am, and we don’t have staff working those hours to sleuth it out. If any of you are night owls, perhaps you could make a pass through the streets west of the Venice bridge and help us figure out where the water is going. And for the rest of the homeowners in that area, please check your sprinkler timers to make sure you are sticking to the watering schedule in the Keys Democracy! We hear you. It is your money and you feel you should be making the decisions about how it is accumulated and spent.
Staff and the board listen to member concerns on projects, and often make course corrections as a result. But decisions are made in this democratic republic by the board. That’s the law we operate under.

IMPORTANCE OF DOG LEASH AND OTHER PET RULE REQUIREMENTS Keep Common Areas Dog Friendly! We are writing today to inform you of the importance of always keeping your dog on a leash and to pick up after your dog properly during your walks around the Keys. While it can be fun to let your dog free occasionally, it can be dangerous and uncomfortable for other members and their guests who are also out enjoying the Tahoe Keys outdoors. TKPOA’s Pavilion Beach has specifically had numerous complaints and violations for dogs being off leash, causing a great nuisance to neighbors, other members trying to enjoy the beach, and general liability concerns for the entire Tahoe Keys community. An El Dorado County Superior Court Stipulated Judgement for case number SV92-006 prohibits non-Lighthouse Shores members from bringing their dogs into Lighthouse Shores and onto the common beach area, Lot C. To prevent a similar prohibition at the Keys Pavilion Beach, TKPOA is stressing the importance of all members, their guests, and tenants, abiding by TKPOA Operating Rules and always keeping their dogs on a controlled leash when on TKPOA Common Areas, including the Pavilion Beach. TKPOA receives regular calls from concerned members regarding dogs being off leash or pet waste that was not properly disposed of. The intent of TKPOA’s leash rule is to protect the health and safety of Association members and to protect your pet. Our goal is to prevent potential accidents from occurring that could harm or upset neighbors who are enjoying their time outside as well. The use of a leash will benefit you, your neighborhood, and your pet. There are many good reasons to keep your dog on a leash: 1. It is a great good neighbor policy, preventing your dog from trespassing on the neighbor's property during your walk. It also keeps your dog from jumping on people you encounter, ensuring that your dog has the chance of being properly introduced. 2. Walking your pet on a leash will prevent the spread of disease. A leashed dog can be restrained from sniffing the droppings of other animals. Keys Breeze
|
3. A leash is commonly referred to as "Your Pet's Lifeline," protecting your pet from traffic and unrestrained animals. Accidents or animal bites are greatly reduced when responsible pet owners obey the leash law. 4. It is a great identification tool, symbolizing that the dog has an owner, and enabling someone who sees the leash and identification tag attached to the dog's collar to find you if you and your pet should become separated. 5. It is a great relief to wildlife, keeping your dog from chasing squirrels, deer, and other wildlife.
While pets may remain unleashed while on the owner’s property (including front yards and porches), it is a violation of the TKPOA Association Operating Rules and against California Law to have a dog off a leash in a Common Area of the Tahoe Keys including but not limited to, common parks, beaches, walkways, streets, and Townhome Cove common park areas. TKPOA has installed pet waste disposal stations throughout the Tahoe Keys common areas to ensure easy and quick disposal for responsible pet owners to pick up after their pets. Proper pet waste disposal assists the Tahoe Keys in maintaining our beautiful park and walkway areas for the benefit of our members, their neighbors, and their guests. It is always good practice for all pet owners to clean up after their furry friends. While TKPOA’s goal is compliance with all rules and regulations, a member may be fined or have amenity privileges suspended for violation of these rules. Please keep your dog leashed, safe, and be a good neighbor and be sure to pick up after your pet while enjoying the outdoors. Please contact TKPOA’s Enforcement Department at (530) 545-0847 with any questions or concerns.
Thank you!

COMMON AREA IRRIGATION SCHEDULE
At the June 17th, 2026, Board meeting, the Board of Directors approved a revised irrigation schedule for the Association’s Common Areas. This revised schedule supports maintaining common area landscaping and limits common area irrigation during member property irrigation time periods to support the limited capacity available from TKPOA’s water wells. These schedules comply with TKPOA Operating Rules: Section 10 Water Conservation Rules for Landscape Irrigation for all TKPOA Water Serviced Properties and Commercial Customers of the Tahoe Keys Water Company. This Operating Rule extends to all TKPOA Common Areas, all Cove Townhome landscaping, all Single-Family home landscaping, and commercial water customer properties landscaping. Landscape irrigation of lawn, turf, and plant material including shrubs, flowers, trees, and foliage is allowed in accordance with these Irrigation Schedules which are required by the limited capacity available of TKPOA’s water wells and TKWC Water Service.

Connecting Tahoe Keys Members to Socials, Activities, & Each Other!
Ways to Stay Updated on Community Events
Members who complete the Keys Life Small Interest Groups questionnaire will be emailed when dates are added to our calendar. Our weekly newsletters are emailed on Friday afternoons by the TKPOA staff to all members. Both of these options are great ways to hear about all of our socials, activities, & events. You can also find our socials on Instagram, Nextdoor, the TKPOA website. For members who prefer to see a hardcopy, we keep a Keys Life white binder with all our current flyers in both the Pavilion clubhouse lobby & indoor pool front desk. The TKPOA Pavilion clubhouse bulletin board (next to the front door) also has current flyers.
Let’s Fall Into Fun
As many of our summer residents head to their winter homes, our calendar will naturally slow down during the fall & winter months. No worries, some fall ideas include a photo contest, an apple-season bake-off, Halloween social, a paint-by-number social, as well as all of our regular activities. To continue to add socials to our calendar, we need one or more volunteers for each social. These members would help with choosing the day, time, & location and help ensure that each social runs smoothly. If you can help, please email KeysLife@myyahoo.com.
