ALASKA NATIVE CULTURE UPDATES

The Tlingit Haida Cultural Ambassador Program enters its third year at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center. It provides a unique opportunity for visitors (and locals) to speak to Indigenous members of the community and learn more about their stewardship of the land they have called home since time immemorial.

Celebration 2026 will take place June 3 – 6, 2026 Originating in 1982, this biennial event is the world’s largest gathering of Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian people as well as one of the largest cultural gatherings in the state of Alaska. The opening parade showcases over 2,000 dancers in regalia.

Tlingit and Haida opened Aan Hít (Village House) in the downtown shopping district. It includes the second Sacred Ground coffee shop and opportunities for tribal members to participate in an Alaska Native arts and crafts market. The goal is to enhance the economic and cultural resources for the tribe and tribal citizens.

Sealaska Heritage Institute’s new Indigenous Science Building is a hub for hands-on education rooted in thousands of years of Indigenous knowledge, values, language, and Western science. The building will serve K-12 programming and community classes as well as summer camps and classes for youth throughout Alaska and the Lower 48.

Huna Totem is building a new cruise ship dock in downtown Juneau. Permits have been obtained and Aak’w Landing should be completed in 2027

Goldbelt Native Corporation is constructing a private cruise ship dock, to be known as Goldbelt Aani, on the southwest side of Douglas Island. Permits have not yet been issued.

Featured in the building are an Indigenous foods lab for intergenerational learning, a digital media lab for recording language and storytelling, and an Indigenous science research lab that will do scientific research on culturally important resources like clams, seaweed, berries and local hunting. Additionally, there will be a focus on environmental science and stewardship, subsistence food, and biodiversity.

S U S T A I N A B I L I T Y S P

Meeting the confines of brewing in a town with no roads in or out, Alaskan Brewing Company has led the craft brewing industry in the pursuit of sustainability initiatives and technologies, including carbon reclamation and fossil fuel and water use reduction. They are first craft brewery nationwide to establish a carbon dioxide (CO2) reclamation system and employ the Belgian-based mash filter press technology

Their “Beer Powered Beer” system conserves and recycles resources to minimize their carbon footprint by eliminating the majority of waste created by the brewing process. This process has received five U.S. Patents, with several more U.S. and International Patents pending.

Additionally, Alaskan Brewing partners with Coastal CODE (since 2007), supporting waterway cleanup and water habitat restoration.

Wild Coast Excursions is dedicated to being a regenerative business. Bearviewing trips are carbon-negative by partnering with the Alaska Carbon Reduction Fund. The Alaska Carbon Reduction Fund installs heat-pumps in lowincome homes. Wild Coast Excursions is also a member of the 1% for the Planet program, donating 1% of their revenue to Alaskan and international environmental partners.
