Nelson Mandela Signed “Long Walk to Freedom” Limited Ed. Book
Mandela, Nelson. Long Walk to Freedom. London: Little, Brown and Co., 1994. Limited edition, #329 of 1000. Lacking slipcase.
Whoopi Goldberg was involved in activism against South Africa’s apartheid and in support of Nelson Mandela. She took part in Mandela’s 70th birthday party, in which celebrations around the world were filmed in an effort to embarrass South Africa into releasing Mandela from prison.
In a tribute to Mandela called “Living the Legacy” (The Nelson Mandela Foundation, 2013), Goldberg said:
”I hope the world will never forget Nelson Mandela, because he has shown us a better way to fight the system. I would describe him as a really great guy, who had more dignity than I could have ever had, had I spent 27 years in jail on some bogus charge. It wasn’t just about him, it was about a much bigger issue, and that is, ‘How do we find, from this point on, a better understanding of how to live together?’ I think about him quite often because some of the things he’s said to me over the years, ‘Be bigger, be better, as best a person you can be, because it does make a difference.’ Nelson Mandela forever changed the world because he proved that in spite of everything, people have a conscience.”
She also starred in the play and subsequent film version of “Sarafina!,” in which she played a woman in apartheid South Africa who becomes an activist, partly inspired by Mandela.
Estimate: $800 - $1,200
