QUARTERBACKS

head coach Jack cRowe’S PoSItIoN-bY-PoSItIoN

TIgHT ENDS

“I know it sounds non-traditional, but we have two starting quarterbacks and that’s because they have both started and have been successful. I think it’s a position that is going to have its challenges in just how we manage the situation. It will be a position that is capable of making any and every play that a quarterback could make. Both Marques (Ivory) and Coty (Blanchard) are proven playmakers in the biggest kind of games. I think they are very complementary and I think both of them would readily recognize how they compliment each other. Marques has the most experience and I think is certainly the starting quarterback, but in every game we are going to have a game plan for two quarterbacks and manage it in whatever way we have to manage it to win the game. It’s a very blessed situation and we are very fortunate to have two outstanding playmakers like Marques Ivory and Coty Blanchard.”

RUNNINg BACKS

“Washaun Ealey certainly defines where we start out on offense and I think he proved last year, that when he is healthy and got in to the system, that he was everything that was expected of him. Washaun can run over and around people and can make you miss. He has a total skill set for blocking, pass receiving and we have never had one better or as good. The next player in the backfield is DaMarcus James and we will be using an ‘A Back’, ‘B-Back’ situation and he will take on the role that Calvin Middleton had last year. He is the second running back in the backfield and will take on more of a blocking role when it is required in a two-back set. He will play tailback and is capable of being a 30 carries-a-game ball carrier. He is a fine compliment to Washaun Ealey. We have a role player, who would be defined as a fullback in Jerry Slota. He provides a versatility to play on or along the line of scrimmage. He provides pass catching ability, blocking ability and is capable of being a runner himself. What comes next to me is the most interesting part about the season, the evolution of three outstanding freshmen who bring something to the table and may even make an impact with the quality that we have at that position. Myles Jones was a heralded and award-winning high school player. He has speed and runs with authority. Troymaine Pope, from Anniston, Ala., is going to be a surprise to a lot of people because of his talent there. He was one of the top rushers in the state of Alabama last year and that was no accident. We also have LeDarius Rodgers, from Leeds, Ala., who carried the ball over 2,000 yards on championship football teams. The three of them are the future. I think its is a position that going forward is the best that we’ve ever had at Jacksonville State.”

“It’s a position that is in transition for us right now. We have had really good players at that spot and we graduate one every year and the next guy in line is left to replace a special player. Denzel Cheeks is the tight end that is the senior and has previously played for three years and gradually became the starter. He posseses what you want to possess, the ability to block and to be a pass receiver because, with his with his size and height, he can be dominant. We have a transfer in Gavin Ellis, who is transitioning from wide receiver. I was extremely impressed with him in the spring and he comes from a family of Jacksonville State people and he brings it every day. He will get better every day he goes out there. We have a transfer, Luke Smith, from the Naval Academy at that position who is a ‘line of scrimmage’ player. He also has the ability to catch the football and stretch the field. We’ll be looking at that position to move a player from another position. It’s a position that we will have to develop as the year goes on.”

OFFENSIVE LINE

“The offensive line has two rising seniors that have really separated themselves with all the young faces that show potential in that group. Odie Rush and Tori Mobley are what you hope to have on a line. Tori moved from tackle to guard and Odie is coming back from a major break in his ankle. One is a left tackle and one is a right guard – they could be the keys to what we are on offense. If they can accept the responsibility of leading the younger players to a higher level of performance, then I think that could be a good group.”

WIDE RECEIVERS

“Wide receiver is a position that is going to define our scoring ability. I think we will be credible in the running game, but the true ability for us to score points is this group of players to make plays, not just run routes and catch the ball, but make plays. Alan Bonner is the senior of the group and defines that. He has set some records as a punt returner and has had his hands on a lot of balls and made a lot of plays since he has been here. It is his time now to step out and be special. Along with him are two

other seniors, Trey Smith and Kevyn Cooper, who honestly surprise you in the kind of plays they make. They are not extremely fast guys, but they are productive playmakers. With those guys, we have a cast of freshmen and sophomores. Freshmen Markis Merrill, Telvin Brown and Josh Barge are capable of making an impact in their first year. They were highly-recruited players that we were very fortunate to get in our program.”

DEFENSIVE LINE

“Defensive line might be the most uncertain place on our football team because we lost three of the four starters and only DiMetrio Tyson returns from that four-man front. He can play his position and he can play all four spots. What we are looking for is who are the other three are going to be. Barry Stafford, who is a walk-on and has been productive, will be in the mix on the line. We have Caleb Lawrence, who is a freshman, and Martez House, another freshman that could step in and play. Erick Butler and Jordan Jackson are also newcomers that could see some playing time. This is just an area that we are going to be developing as the season starts. Outside of the returning players, we have a bunch of names that can be said throughout the season. I am optimistic about the caliber of young players that are there and define the future of this position with the youth that we brought in instead of re-tooling with older players. We have invested in the development of these young players.”

LINEBACKERS

schemes last year. We saw good play out of senior Brooks Robinson, while junior Robert Gray and freshman Pierre Warren also played a lot of snaps last year. Freshman Brandon Bender could see action as well in the defensive backfield. We moved Keginald Harris to a lot of different places when we made the transition in schemes and I am hoping Keginald’s role will be more certain for him. He is a leader and we need to find the right place for him to exert his impact on this football team.”

CORNERBACKS

“We have a walk-on going into his senior year with Francis Duncan and then the cast of 19-year-olds. They are all good players, including Rashod Byers and Denzel Bynum. I think at this position, we have brought in some high school players that can make an impact this season. Jermaine Hough and Dushonta Broughton are two guys from the Atlanta area that we feel like that can make an impact.”

KICKINg gAME

“It’s a position that is just as young as the guys up front. We have competition at every position and I don’t think there is an established player in the bunch. We do have some people that have earned what they have gotten. Ben Endress is a walk-on, Brent Tolson is a player that has earned his way into having a chance to play. Jamaal Johnson was a freshman that was moved to that position. James Powell is coming back from an injury, and Mikel Whittier is another walk-on that could see some time at one of the linebacker spots. The only real experience that is there is Nick Johnson, who is a senior and moved from safety and is battling to learn a new way of playing football. The one anchor at that position is Rashad Smith, who led us in tackles last year. He is capable of being a defining player on defense as he enters his junior year.”

SAFETIES

“We are going to start with Coty (Blanchard) at punter, but we are trying to develop a new talent that is joining us from Australia. We have to get used to saying some things about Hamish (MacInnes), because he has never played football before. He is an Australian rules kicker that we will be developing into a punter. Our kicking duties will fall to someone that I am very optimistic about in Griffin Thomas. He has been playing for us for a couple of years and I think he is ready to be the kicker we need to win tight football games. He came as a walk-on and earned everything he has.”

THE SCHEDULE

“It’s the toughest in the history of Jacksonville State and probably the toughest in the history of the Ohio Valley Conference. You can play two FBS teams, but you can also play two top-five teams in the country in the same season. Arkansas is probably a top-five team and Florida is expected to rise back to its status of being one of the top teams in the country. We are going to be challenged by both of them, and then you throw in Chattanooga, who had one of the best defenses in the country last year. The OVC will be strong again this year. The thing about the OVC this year that defines the competition is that everybody has their quarterback returning and they are all established, credible quarterbacks. It really makes it a challenge as far as the conference is concerned –who’s defense is going to be strong enough to stop the other team’s quarterback?”

“This is the position on the team that is going through the toughest evolution with the style of play we adopted when we changed defensive

Jack c rowe MEET HEAD COACH JACK CROWE

There have been many successful coaches in the 65-year history of the Ohio Valley Conference. Among those include Eastern Kentucky’s Roy Kidd, MTSU’s Boots Donnelly, and EIU’s Bob Spoo, who all three coaches have combined to win 559 games.

You can count Jack Crowe among that elite group as his 76.1 percent winning percentage in conference games is tops among all active coaches in the league. He has guided the Gamecocks to three Ohio Valley Conference Championships with a nine-year mark of 54-17, while posting the best record in the OVC in 2003, 2004, 2009 and 2011.

Crowe, who begins his 13th season leading Jax State, has guided the Gamecocks to nine consecutive winning seasons, which ties for the longest such streak in the school’s 109-year history. The 2011 senior class left as the winningest four-year class since the Gamecocks left the Division II ranks in 1993. The senior class finished with a four-year record of 32-13, which is the most wins of any other four-year class since JSU moved to Division I.

Jax State is the winningest team, by percentage, in the Ohio Valley Conference and in all of FCS football since joining the league in 2003. The Gamecocks have won 76.1 percent of their conference games, posting a 54-17 record, while Eastern Kentucky is second with a 71.8 all-time winning percentage.

On the field, Crowe is a proven winner. He’s a skilled manager who brings to Gamecock football expertise, an eye for evaluating talent, and a personality that has energized the program.

In 2003, his squad posted an impressive 7-1 league mark and claimed the Ohio Valley Conference Championship with a 22-17 win over Southeast Missouri State on Nov. 22, leading the Gamecocks to their first-ever Football Championship Subdivision playoff berth.

The 2004 Gamecocks earned their second-straight Ohio Valley Conference Championship with an impressive 7-1 league record and finished the regular season with an incredible 9-1 overall record. For his efforts, Crowe was named the Roy Kidd OVC Football Coach of the Year by his peers for the 2004 season. Jax State also posted the best record in the Ohio Valley Conference in 2009 with a 9-3 mark and was just 53 seconds away from upsetting BCS national power Florida State.

In 2010, Crowe led the Gamecocks to one of the most successful seasons in the school’s Division I history, posting a 9-3 overall record, and was ranked as high as No. 2 during the season. JSU also advanced to the second round of the NCAA playoffs and hosted its first home playoff game in 18 years at the newly renovated Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium while also claiming one of the biggest wins in school history with a 49-48 double-overtime thriller at Ole Miss.

The 2011 Gamecocks won the school’s 18th conference championship in school history after finishing with a 7-4 record, including a 6-2 record in the OVC, sharing the title with Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee Tech.

A native of Birmingham, Crowe has coached over 37 years at some of the top programs in the country. During his career, he has worked at Auburn, Baylor, Arkansas, Clemson and Wyoming on the Division I-A level and also has college coaching stints at North Alabama and Livingston (now West Alabama).

Crowe was named the head coach at Arkansas in January of 1990 after serving one year as offensive coordinator. He coached the Razorbacks to the 1991 Independence Bowl as head coach and the 1990 Cotton Bowl as an assistant, posting a 19-14 record. He was offensive coordinator at Baylor from 1993 to 1995 and led the Bears to the 1994 Southwest Conference championship.

He spent three years as the offensive coordinator at Clemson, where the Tigers posted a 29-6-1 record and won three-straight Atlantic Coast Conference championships. His offense led the ACC in rushing in each of his three seasons. Under his guidance, Clemson played twice in the Florida-Citrus Bowl and once in the Gator Bowl.

Crowe spent four seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Auburn before moving to Clemson. The Tigers led the SEC twice in total offense and three times in rushing. Auburn played in the FloridaCitrus, Sugar, Liberty and Cotton Bowl games, and Bo Jackson became a Heisman Trophy winner under Crowe’s tutelage.

Crowe spent the 1981 season at Wyoming, where the Cowboys finished 8-3. From 1978-80, he was the offensive coordinator at North Alabama. The Lions went 17-7 and won the 1980 Gulf South Conference title. He served as offensive coordinator at Livingston for three seasons (1974-76) before being elevated to head coach at age 28.

Crowe got his start in coaching without playing college football. He played football and baseball at West End High School in Birmingham, then went to Jefferson State Junior College, where he stuck to baseball.

He transferred to UAB and, after graduating with a degree in chemistry, became an assistant at West End High School. A year later, he became offensive coordinator at Oxford High School, where he led the Yellow Jackets to a 21-1-1 record and two conference titles.

Crowe is married to the former LeAnn Gaines of Anniston.

#9 JACKSONVILLE STATE• 24

UT MARTIN • 23

September 1, 2011

Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium – Jacksonville, Ala.

JACKSONVILLE – It won’t generate the same national headlines or ESPN highlights as Jacksonville State’s stunning upset of Ole Miss to kick off the 2010 football season. It was, however, every bit as dramatic.

Senior Calvin Middleton scored on a 4-yard touchdown run with 38 seconds left and James Esco kicked the go-ahead extra point as the Gamecocks rallied from a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit to knock off Ohio Valley Conference rival Tennessee-Martin 24-23 at Burgess-Snow Field Thursday night.

“It was left at the end to just make plays,” Jacksonville State head coach Jack Crowe said. ““The only thing you can really say came out of that is we played with a lot of heart. We lost our poise, but we never lost our composure.

“I really thought at the end … it was just a bunch of guys who refused to lose. Because we certainly did everything to lose.”

Jacksonville State (1-0), the preseason OVC favorite, appeared on the verge of suffering its first home loss to UT-Martin in 24 years. The Skyhawks (0-1) had taken a 23-10 lead with 14:11 remaining when Cody Sandlin kicked a 45-yard field goal to give UT-Martin its biggest lead of the night.

But Gabriel Chambers returned the ensuing kickoff 38 yards to midfield and the Gamecocks didn’t wasting any time finding the end zone.

After a 7-yard Washaun Ealey run, backup quarterback Coty Blanchard and the junior transfer from Georgia hooked up on a 43-yard scoring pass with 13:06 to go. Esco’s extra point trimmed JSU’s deficit to 23-17.

The Gamecocks defense, which surrendered 475 yards, rose to the occasion on UT-Martin’s next two possessions. The final scoring drive began at the 50 and JSU covered the distance in 3:53, with Blanchard running for 20 and 8 yards on consecutive plays to move the team deep into Skyhawks territory.

Middleton capped off the nine-play drive with his 4-yard run, setting off a celebration from the crowd of 17,919.

But the high-powered UT-Martin offense wasn’t finished.

Starting at their own 15 with 34 seconds left, the Skyhawks moved to the JSU 42 in five plays. Facing a second-and-10 with six seconds remaining, quarterback Derek Carr hooked up with Stephen Shiver on a 27-yard completion, but Shiver was forced out of bounds at the JSU 15 as time expired.

“I was proud that some of the things got better as we played on,” Crowe said. “Not all of them did.

“What does this say about the future? It says we’ve got a lot to get done. It doesn’t say that we can’t accomplish anything, it just says we’re a LONG way away from it.”

That future isn’t likely to include starting quarterback Marques Ivory. The senior from Warner Robins, Ga., sustained a fractured right fibula during the first half and is scheduled to undergo surgery on Friday.

Blanchard, the hero of last year’s win at Ole Miss, completed 9-of-17 passes for a JSU careerhigh 133 yards and one touchdown. He also ran nine times for 32 yards.

Jacksonville State trailed 17-7 at halftime after surrendering 285 total yards.

The Gamecocks’ only first-half points came on Ivory’s 22-yard pass to tight end Justin Howard with 9:54 left in the second quarter.

Esco’s field goal early in the third quarter drew Jacksonville State to within 17-10. But the visitors got field goals of 25 and 45 yards from Sandlin to stretch their lead to 23-10 early in the fourth.

Ealey ran for 41 yards on 13 carries in his Gamecock debut, while Middleton finished with 28 yards on 10 attempts.

Finley Stadium – Chattanooga, Tenn.

• 17

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – This time, unlike the season-opening victory over Tennessee-Martin, Jacksonville State dug itself too deep of a hole to climb out of.

The No. 10 Gamecocks (1-1) surrendered 508 yards of total offense and fell to No. 23 Chattanooga 38-17 before a crowd of 12,195 at Finley Stadium, snapping their four-game win streak in a series that dates back to 1904.

It was a night of unwanted milestones for Jacksonville State.

The Gamecocks finished with only 224 yards of total offense, their fewest since a 2006 loss at Mississippi State. They managed only 17 yards and one first down after halftime.

The 508 yards gained by Chattanooga (296 passing, 212 rushing) was the most a Jacksonville

State defense has allowed since a 2004 loss to Furman in the first round of the Division I-AA playoffs.

The first regular-season meeting at Finley Stadium between two ranked opponents was a backand-forth affair through the first 30 minutes. Chattanooga led 23-17 at intermission as the teams combined to roll up 536 total yards.

The Mocs (1-1) struck first, traveling 43 yards in four plays on their second possession. Chris Awuah ran 15 yards for a touchdown and Nick Pollard added the extra point to give Chattanooga a 7-0 lead with 7:25 left in the first quarter.

But Jacksonville State wasted little time in responding.

Sophomore Coty Blanchard, making his first career start at quarterback, moved JSU 70 yards in eight plays, completing 3-of-3 passes for 59 yards.

Washaun Ealey capped the drive with a 4-yard run – his first rushing touchdown in a Gamecock uniform – and James Esco’s extra point made it 7-7 at the 4:28 mark.

After a short Mocs punt, JSU took its only lead of the game when Calvin Middleton ran eight yards for a touchdown to finish off a 58-yard drive. Esco’s kick put the Gamecocks ahead 14-7 with 52 seconds left in the opening quarter.

Middleton’s TD was his eighth in his last eight games.

Chattanooga needed only seven plays to drive for the tying touchdown on the ensuing possession. Quarterback B.J. Coleman connected with Marion Anthony for a 24-yard touchdown and the extra point made it 14-14 with 13:09 left.

A time-consuming 11-play drive, finished off by Pollard’s 25-yard field goal, gave Chattanooga a 17-14 lead midway through the second quarter. But Jacksonville State again answered by quickly moving 49 yards, with Esco kicking a 28-yard field goal with 4:49 left in the half.

Chattanooga’s Coleman hit Joel Bradford on a 47-yard touchdown pass moments later, giving the Mocs a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. Jacksonville State’s Monte Lewis blocked the extra point attempt, making it 23-17 Chattanooga with 3:01 left in the second quarter.

Awuah scored his second touchdown, a 1-yard run, with 2:48 to go in the third quarter extended the Mocs’ lead. Coleman ran in the conversion to make it 31-17.

Wes Dothard’s 30-yard interception return for a touchdown made it 38-17 and ended Jacksonville State’s hopes of comeback.

Blanchard finished with a career-high 164 yards passing, completing 13-of-23 passes. Jacksonville State was 1-of-13 in third-down efficiency.

Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium – Jacksonville, Ala.

JACKSONVILLE - Jacksonville State got “Back in Black” for Saturday night’s Ohio Valley Conference game against Eastern Illinois University.

Exchanging their traditional red jerseys for black, the Gamecocks overcame a pair of costly first-half turnovers and used a punishing running attack to knock off the Panthers 28-21 before a crowd of 14,813 at Burgess-Snow Field.

Jacksonville State - wearing black for the first time since last year’s Murray State gameimproved to 3-1, 2-0 in the OVC. It was the Gamecocks’ first home win over Eastern Illinois since 2003.

JSU’s victory wasn’t secured until the final seconds. After quarterback/punter Coty Blanchard pinned EIU at its 1 with 27 seconds left, Jacksonville State senior defensive back A.J. Davis recovered a fumble by the Panthers’ Kenny Whittaker after a completed pass and the Gamecocks ran one more play to burn the remaining time off the clock.

Eastern Illinois fell to 1-3 and 0-2 in OVC play.

Jacksonville State pounded out a season-high 294 yards on the ground, led by junior Washaun Ealey’s career-best 155 yards. Senior Calvin Middleton finished with 96 yards and scored both of JSU’s second-half touchdowns on 1-yard runs.

“I thought the offensive line came out very physical tonight,” Ealey said. “It was something that we needed in the running game.

“They came out and basically did what the coaches asked them to do all week. I feel like if we run straight at anybody, I don’t think anybody can stop us. The offensive line is young but they’re playing great ball right now, and hopefully we’ll keep that up.”

“They’re weapons when the offensive line blocks like it did tonight,” Blanchard said. “We definitely established the run. We threw in some passes here and there to keep them guessing on the defensive side.”

Jacksonville State head coach Jack Crowe is now 7-0 in games in which the Gamecocks were tied at halftime. Blanchard’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Trey Smith with 1:22 left in the second quarter pulled JSU into a 14-14 deadlock heading to intermission.

Smith’s score was his first touchdown as a Gamecock.

The Gamecocks scored on their first drive for the second straight week, taking the opening kickoff and covering 70 yards in 10 plays.

Ealey’s 16-yard burst moved JSU deep into EIU territory. Blanchard finished off the drive with a scoring pass to Howard, the senior tight end’s second TD of the season.

The first of James Esco’s four extra points made it 7-0 with 10:09 left in the first quarter.

Eastern responded with an 80-yard, 10-play drive capped by quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s 18-yard TD pass to Chris Wright at the 4:53 mark of the first quarter.

JSU backup quarterback Thomas Darrah’s fumble gave EIU the ball at its 41 early in the second quarter. The Panthers drove to the JSU 10 in 12 plays, but came away empty-handed when kicker Cameron Berra missed a 27-yard field goal attempt.

Another fumble - this one by James Shaw - and a personal foul penalty gave Eastern Illinois possession at the JSU 13 moments later. The Panthers needed only two plays to score, with Jake Walker running in from the 2 with 4:26 left in the first half.

Jacksonville State regained the lead late in the third quarter on Middleton’s first 1-yard touchdown run.

His second touchdown run, with 12:22 left in the game, marked the Acworth, Ga., native’s fourth career two-touchdown game.

MURRAY STATE • 30

October 1, 2011

Roy Stewart Stadium – Murray, Ky.

MURRAY, Ky. – Another uniform variation, another Jacksonville State victory.

A week after donning black jerseys in a home win over Eastern Illinois, the Gamecocks broke out red pants with their road white jerseys for the first time in two years Saturday night against Murray State.

JSU spotted the Racers an early 10-point lead before rallying to claim a heart-pounding 38-30 Ohio Valley Conference victory before crowd of 3,838 at Roy Stewart Stadium, extending the Gamecocks’ win streak over Murray State to eight.

Jacksonville State improved 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the OVC.

Murray State, which was picked second behind JSU in the OVC preseason poll, fell to 2-3 and 1-2.

The Gamecocks appeared to have the game under control when junior James Esco kicked a 28-yard field goal with 5:15 to go in the fourth quarter to make it 38-24. The outcome seemed even more secure when Robert Gray intercepted a Murray State pass with only 3:39 left.

But three running plays failed to net a first down and Coty Blanchard was forced to punt from deep in his own territory.

His kick was fielded at the Racers’ 45 by Dontre Johnson, who returned it 54 yards to the JSU 1. Murray quarterback Casey Brockman then ran in from the 2 with 53 seconds remaining, but the Gamecocks’ Rodney Garrott broke through to block the extra point try – Jax State’s second blocked kick of the game.

Murray State recovered the ensuing onside kick and drove to the JSU 45 in the waning seconds. But the Racers were penalized for a false start on fourth down, which by NCAA rule ended the game.

The Gamecocks rolled up a season-high 486 yards, including 329 on the ground. It was the third straight game – all victories –the Jacksonville State offense had eclipsed the 400-yard mark.

Junior Washaun Ealey ran 28 times, his most this season, for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Blanchard added 79 yards and Calvin Middleton had 66.

Murray State was limited to 11 yards on 26 running plays, but finished with 421 yards through the air. It was the fewest rushing yards Jax State has allowed an OVC opponent since joining the league in 2003.

Madison, Ala., native Arthur Brackett, a sophomore receiver, caught eight passes for a careerhigh 181 yards for the Racers.

Ealey’s 13-yard run late in the first quarter trimmed Murray’s lead to 10-7.

Blanchard then hooked up with Justin Howard for a 5-yard touchdown pass on JSU’s next drive and Esco added the PAT to make it 14-10 with 13:58 in the second quarter, a lead the Gamecocks never relinquished.

Ealey’s second rushing TD, a 12-yarder with 13:08 to go in the third quarter, put JSU in front 21-10.

The teams then swapped touchdowns over the next 16 ½ minutes, with Jerry Slota scoring on a 1-yard run from the Wildcat formation and Blanchard tossing a 40-yard scoring pass to Trey Smith.

Blanchard’s second TD pass of the game extended Jax State’s lead to 35-24 with 11:38 remaining.

#10 JACKSONVILLE STATE

October 15, 2011

Governors Stadium – Clarksville, Tenn.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – It took Jacksonville State almost 20 minutes to find its way into the end zone Saturday night.

Then the floodgates opened and Austin Peay couldn’t keep the Gamecocks out.

No. 10 Jacksonville State scored 28 points in a 10-minute span in the second quarter – its most in a quarter in seven years – and crushed Austin Peay 44-14 before a crowd of 5,186 at Governors Stadium.

The Gamecocks improved to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play with their fourth straight victory.

It was JSU’s fifth consecutive win over Austin Peay since the Govs rejoined the OVC in 2007 and has outscored the Govs 205-58 in those five meetings.

Jacksonville State gave its next opponent, Southeastern Conference member Kentucky, plenty to study on film ahead of next Saturday’s game in Lexington, Ky.

The Gamecocks’ opportunistic defense forced six turnovers and returned two interceptions for touchdowns – the first time that’s happened in a game since 2009. Brooks Robinson also returned a fumble 32 yards for a Jacksonville State score.

Pierre Warren had an apparent interception return for a TD, but the play was blown dead by an official’s inadvertent whistle.

Two freshmen reserves, linebacker Ben Endress of Ashland and defensive back Jamaal Johnson of Piedmont, added to Govs’ quarterback Jake Ryan’s misery in the fourth quarter.

Endress scored on a 10-yard interception return with 3:37 left. Johnson duplicated the feat just over a minute later, picking off Ryan and racing 45 yards to the end zone for the Gamecocks’ final touchdown.

Ryan completed just 16-of-31 passes for 172 yards and was intercepted five times before mercifully being replaced on Austin Peay’s final possession.

It was a turnover by Jax State that led to the game’s first points.

Alan Bonner muffed a punt late in the first quarter that was recovered by Austin Peay’s Devan Stark at the JSU 30. Two plays later, Ryan connected with Stark on a 15-yard touchdown pass and the extra point gave the Govs a 7-0 lead with two minutes left.

The game took a decided turn in JSU’s favor after Warren’s interception.

Starting at the APSU 35, the Gamecocks covered the distance in just four plays, with Washaun Ealey scoring on a 27-yard run, his longest of 2011. James Esco’s extra point pulled JSU even at 7-7 with 10:34 left in the second quarter.

Coty Blanchard ran in from the 3 on JSU’s next possession to cap a nine-play, 51-yard drive. Esco’s kick made it 14-7 at the 5:56 mark, a lead the Gamecocks never relinquished.

Ealey’s 17-yard run set up the next Jax State score. Fullback Jerry Slota finished off the eightplay drive by taking a direct snap from center and diving in from the 2 to make it 21-7 with 52 seconds left before halftime.

Then disaster struck for Austin Peay (2-4, 2-2) when Monte Lewis forced a fumble that was snatched up by Robinson, who ran 32 yards to the end zone to give JSU a 28-7 halftime lead.

The 28-point quarter was the most Jax State had scored in one period since 2004 against UT-Martin.

Esco’s 19-yard field goal early in the third quarter extended the lead to 31-7.

Ealey eclipsed the 100-yard barrier for the third straight contest, carrying 18 times for 124 yards. Jax State outgained the Governors 360-266.

Commonwealth Stadium – Lexington, Ky.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Jacksonville State’s attempt to knock off its second Southeastern Conference foe in as many seasons fell short with a 38-14 loss at Kentucky.

JSU had its four-game winning streak snapped and moves to 5-2 overall on the season, but remains undefeataed with a 3-0 OVC mark. UK (3-4) returned to the win column after dropping its last four games.

The Wildcats’ defense scored the game’s first points on Martavius Neloms’ 40-yard fumble return with 3:33 in the opening period to take the early lead. The UK offense took note and

scored on its next three possessions to post a 24-7 halftime lead en route to the win. The Wildcats took advantage of three Jax State turnovers as all three turnovers accounted for 21 points for UK.

UK’s La’Rod King caught his first of two touchdowns early in the second quarter with a 29-yard catch to extend the Wildcats’ lead to 14-0. UK added to its lead after quarterback Morgan Newton took it in from one-yard out with 6:05 left in the half.

JSU got on the board after putting together a nine-play, 79 yard drive as quarterback Coty Blanchard connected with Alan Bonner for a 22-yard TD strike with 2:22 left before halftime. The scoring play was Bonner’s first receiving touchdown of the season at the 10th of his career.

UK tacked on a 27-yard field goal as the opening half came to a close to build a 24-7 lead at the intermission.

After a scoreless third period, the Wildcat defense set up another scoring opportunity after UK’s Danny Trevathan pick off a Blanchard pass and returned it to the Gamecock six yard line. UK opened the final period with King’s catch in the endzone.

Freshman Gabriel Chambers put the final points of the game for Jax State, returning the ensuing kick off with a 99-yard return. The return ranks fourth all-time in JSU history and also ties for the fourth longest return in FCS this season.

UK added its final points of the contest with a nine-yard run with 6:40 remaining. The Wildcat offense finished with 445 yards of total offense, while JSU was limited to just 270 yards of production.

Junior Washaun Ealey turned in his fourth-straight game with 100-plus rushing yards. The last Gamecock to rush for over 100 yards in four straight games was Clay Green in 2005. Blanchard finished with 112 yards through the air, marking his seventh-consecutive game with 100 or more yards passing.

Defensively for JSU, freshman Pierre Warren was credited with a pair of fumble recoveries in the contest. The last time a Gamecock recovered a pair of fumbles was Jawaan Booker in 2009 against Florida State. Rashad Smith led JSU in tackles with nine on the day, including a pair of stops for a loss.

October 29, 2011

Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium – Jacksonville, Ala.

JACKSONVILLE - Most of the Homecoming crowd at Burgess-Snow Field Saturday came expecting to see Jacksonville State knock off one of its pursuers for the Ohio Valley Conference championship.

What the 18,933 on hand witnessed instead was the league race get tighter entering November.

Dontey Gay ran for the go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter and Tennessee Tech’s defense forced a key turnover late as the Golden Eagles claimed a 21-14 victory.

The loss, Jax State’s second straight, dropped the No. 13 Gamecocks to 5-3 overall and into a three-way tie for first place in the OVC at 4-1.

No. 19 Tennessee Tech improved to 5-2 and 4-1 by beating Jacksonville State for the second year in a row.

“My compliments to Watson (Brown) and Tennessee Tech,” JSU head coach Jack Crowe said. “They came in here with a plan and we had a chance to do something about it, but we didn’t.

“We’ve got a team that’s got a habit of making some critical mistakes. It’s a relative term in this game, mistakes, but they made a lot fewer than we did. We played a team that had two penalties and no turnovers.”

Tennessee Tech limited the Gamecocks to 40 yards below its season average of 202 yards per game. JSU’s 14 points tied a season-low set a week earlier against FBS foe Kentucky.

The Golden Eagles went ahead 21-14 early in the fourth quarter, driving 78 yards in nine plays.

TTU quarterback Tre Lamb connected with a Ryan Tilghman on a 43-yard pass to the JSU 10 on the sixth play of the drive. Gray then ran in from the 1 on third down and Zach Sharp added the extra point to put the Golden Eagles ahead 21-14 with 13:06 remaining.

After an exchange of punts, JSU took over at its 13 with 3:28 left. Coty Blanchard - who finished with a career-high 175 passing yards - completed two straight passes as the Gamecocks swiftly moved to the Tennessee Tech 30.

But on second-and-1, Calvin Middleton caught a short pass from Blanchard and was hit hard by Tennessee Tech safety Corey Watson. The ball popped loose and was recovered by Tech’s Jamere Hogue, ending JSU’s comeback hopes.

“I thought we were on our way to scoring when we turned it over and lost it,” Crowe said. “Nobody hates it worse than Calvin does.”

Jacksonville State looked unstoppable on its first possession, receiving the opening kickoff and piercing together a time-consuming 15-play, 77-yard march for a touchdown.

The lengthy drive culminated with Blanchard tossing a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jerry Slota in the back of the end zone. James Esco’s extra point made it 7-0 with 7:56 left in the first.

Tennessee Tech, which had zero total yards through the game’s 22 minutes, took advantage of a gamble by the Gamecocks for its first points.

After stopping JSU on fourth-and-2, Tech drove 65 yards for a tying touchdown as Lamb completed four passes. Gay finished off the drive with a 1-yard run and Sharp’s kick made it 7-7 with 1:05 left in the first half.

Both teams had long scoring drives in the third quarter.

Tennessee Tech received the second-half kickoff and went 72 yards in 11 plays to take its first lead. Adam Urbano’s 5-yard TD run made it 14-7 at the 9:04 mark in the third.

The Gamecocks answered with a 13-play, 70-yard scoring drive on the ensuing possession to pull even. Middleton ran six times on the drive and Blanchard finished it off with a 13-yard TD run of his own.

Esco’s extra point made it 14-14 with 2:55 left in the third quarter.

JSU’s offense only had possession two more times the rest of the game.

“We got the ball three times in the second half and I don’t think I have ever been around a team that only got the ball three times in a half,” Crowe said.

The Gamecocks host Eastern Kentucky (5-3, 4-1) next Saturday at 3 p.m. The Colonels held off Murray State 34-33 on Saturday to tie Jax State and Tennessee Tech atop the OVC standings.

“All we can do is win out and not worry about anyone but ourselves,” Blanchard said. “For all I know, I think we still control our destiny.”

November 5, 2011

Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium – Jacksonville, Ala.

JACKSONVILLE - Points were easy to come by for Jacksonville State on Saturday night. Words to describe what happened in the final seven minutes against Eastern Kentucky, however, were much tougher to come by.

The host Gamecocks built a 24-point lead on the strength of Washaun Ealey’s 83-yard touchdown run with 7:25 to play, then watched the Colonels respond with a comeback that won’t soon be forgotten anytime soon in the Ohio Valley Conference.

EKU scored four touchdowns in a six-minute span, then stuffed a last-gasp JSU drive a yard short of the goal line, as it rallied for a 52-48 victory in front of 16,845 stunned fans at Burgess-Snow Field.

“A disaster,” Gamecocks wide receiver Alan Bonner said. “A total disaster.”

Head coach Jack Crowe added: “I have never seen anything like it.”

In the immediate aftermath of Ealey’s run, which put him over 200 yards for the game, it looked as though JSU (5-4, 4-2 in the OVC) had positioned itself as the team to beat over the next two weeks. The Gamecocks entered the day in a three-way tie for the OVC lead along with EKU (6-3, 5-1) and Tennessee Tech, but the latter lost at home to Murray State, leaving the door ajar.

Cameron Bailey’s 60-yard touchdown reception from T.J. Pryor with 6:42 remaining seemed inconsequential at the time, especially after JSU’s Rodney Garrott recovered and returned the ensuing onside kick to the Colonels’ 28-yard line. Crowe, in fact, took out several starters, including Ealey and quarterback Coty Blanchard.

But on fourth down, reserve running back Jordan Allen fumbled, EKU’s Anthony Brown picked up the ball and 71 yards later it was 48-38.

“That was a major coaching error, to be honest with you,” Crowe said in reference to his substitutions. “(The) fumble recovery was a momentum shift.”

The Colonels recovered their next onside kick and needed only four plays to score, this time on an 18-yard Pryor-to-Justin Williams TD pass with 4:14 to go.

“It just kept snowballing on us,” Blanchard said. “Everybody on the sideline started to get a little antsy.”

The feeling intensified after the Gamecocks went three-and-out and EKU’s Jeremy Caldwell returned a punt 17 yards into their territory. Two plays later, Pryor -- who had five TD passes -- hit Tyrone Goard for his third score from 37 yards out at the 1:24 mark.

“Twenty-eight points (in that span) is almost an impossible scenario,” Crowe said. “As a coach, this will be the closest to you thinking you have a game won.”

JSU still gave itself a good chance to do just that, driving 60 yards in a hurry behind the arm of Blanchard (19-of-28, 300 yards, two TDs) and the legs of Bonner (nine receptions, 205 yards, two TDs). It had a first-and-goal at the Colonels’ 4-yard line with 17 seconds left, but a Blanchard scramble and a spiked pass left it with a final play from the 2.

On the game’s final play, senior tailback Calvin Middleton got stopped a yard short of the goal line.

“When it came time for us to knock (them) off the ball, we didn’t do it,” Crowe said. “Give credit to EKU.”

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI • 21

November 12, 2011

Houck Stadium – Cape Girardeau, Mo.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Calvin Middleton rushed for 191 yards and three touchdowns to lead Jacksonville State to a 22-21 come-from-behind win over Southeast Missouri State as the Gamecocks bounced back to tie for the lead in the Ohio Valley Conference . The Gamecocks snapped a three-game losing skid and improved to 6-4 on the season to post their ninth straight winning seasons under Jack Crowe. It also marks the 43rd winning season for JSU and the 5-2 OVC record is also tied with Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee Tech. Jax State rallied from a 21-9 deficit to post its sixth come-from-behind win of the year. As a matter of fact, the Gamecocks have 13 come-from-behind wins since the start of the 2010 season.

“This was a tough, hard fought football game,” said JSU head coach Jack Crowe. “We chal-

lenged the defense at the half and they responded by shutting them out in the second half. I thought they really played well over the final two quarters.”

Trailing 21-9 at the half, the Gamecocks came out and took the second half kickoff and went 75 yards in 13 plays to cut the lead to 21-16 after Middleton scored his second touchdown of the day on a one-yard run on fourth down.

The Gamecock defense held to force a SEMO punt, and Jax State then marched 91 yards in 10 plays to take the lead for good.

Middleton scored on an 11-yard run with just :17 left in the third quarter to give Jax State a 22-21 lead headed into the final quarter.

The JSU defense held Southeast Missouri to just 98 yards on 25 plays as the Redhawks had just four drives in the second half.

Coty Blanchard, who missed the first 14 minutes of the game due to spasms in his back, came off the bench to finish 7-for-9 for 52 yards, while rushing 10 times for 83 yards on the ground. JSU also finished with 410 yards of total offense for the second straight game and for the fifth time this season.

NASHVILLE – Sophomore quarterback Coty Blanchard was 15-fof-19 for 213 yards and passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another to lead Jacksonville State to its 18th Conference Championship with a 38-16 win over Tennessee State.

The Gamecocks, 7-4 overall and 6-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference, will share the OVC Championship with Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee Tech after all three finished with identical 6-2 conference records. It marks the third OVC title for JSU and first since the 2004 season.

The Gamecock senior class became the school’s Division I winningest class with a four-year record of 32-13. It’s the most wins and is also tops in winning percentage, just ahead of the 2010 senior class’s record of 31-14.

Senior Calvin Middleton finished with 72 yards on 15 carries, while Washaun Ealey became just the 10th player in JSU’s 108-year football history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season after having 70 yards on 15 carries. Ealey now has 1,069 yards on the season and is the first Gamecock to top 1,000 yards since Clay Green in 2006.

The Gamecocks took an early lead after Ealey raced 14 yards on his first carry of the game to give JSU a 7-0 lead with 8:41 left in the first quarter.

Tennessee State got on the scoreboard after Jamin Godrey kicked a 28-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3 with 5:16 left, and the Tigers took the lead two plays later.

The Gamecocks fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Tennessee State recovered. Dante’ Thomas raced 24 yards on the second play of the drive to give the Tigers a 10-7 lead with 4:32 left in the first quarter.

Jax State answered early in the second quarter after Blanchard raced down the right sidelines 27 yards for a touchdown to give the Gamecocks a 14-10 lead with 11:04 left.

Jacksonville State extended the lead to 17-10 after Esco kicked a 42-yard field goal with 1:23 left in the second quarter to give the Gamecocks the lead at the intermission.

Jax State extended the lead in the third quarter after Blanchard connected on a two-yard touchdown pass to Middleton to give the Gamecocks extended the lead to 24-10 with 6:49 remaining.

Tennessee State then went 74 yards and scored on the final play of the quarter when JeMarcus Sears caught a six-yard touchdown pass from Mike German to cut the lead to 24-16.

The Gamecocks then scored two late touchdowns, thanks to a Blanchard to Middleton 16-yard touchdown pass with 2:30 left in the game to make the score 31-16.

Pierre Warren then returned an interception 98 yards, the third longest in JSU history, with just 1:01 left in the game for the final margin.

Blanchard tied his career-high with two touchdown passes, while Alan Bonner led seven Gamecock receivers with 127 yards on seven receptions.

Tennessee State was led by German, who was 26-of-43 for 262 yards, but had three interceptions.
