ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Gravitation is one of the four fundamental forces that govern the universe. It refers to the force which means two masses are attracted to one another. It is invisible, intangible, essential. But it is the force which creates the attraction that we call weight. For years, these issues of weight, space, speed and mass have intuitively run through my choreographic experiments.

My day-to-day work with the dancers leads me to experiment with forms whose basic components revolve around this question, which is both abstract and terribly concrete.

Today, according to a principle of alternation between pieces based on pure research and more narrative ballets, I expect this set of problems involving gravity to open up new writing spaces for me.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Founded by Angelin Preljocaj in 1985 in Champigny-sur-Marne (Paris region), the BALLET PRELJOCAJ is now settled in Aix-en-Provence since 1996.

Angelin Preljocaj has created 62 choreographic works, ranging from solo to larger formations. He collaborates regularly with other artists in various fields such as music (Air, Laurent Garnier, Thomas Bangalter…) visual arts (Subodh Gupta, Adel Abdessemed), design (Constance Guisset), fashion (Jean Paul Gaultier, Azzedine Alaïa, Igor Chapurin), drawing (Enki Bilal), literature (Éric Reinhardt, Laurent Mauvignier), animation movies (Boris Labbé), and more.

His creations have been restaged by numerous other repertory companies, from which he also receives requests to create new pieces: La Scala in Milan, New York City Ballet, Staatsoper in Berlin, Paris Opera Ballet. He has received numerous awards (Benois de la danse, Bessie Award, Victoires de la musique, Globe de Cristal). He has also directed and collaborated on several films of his own choreographic work.

His first full-length feature film co-directed with Valérie Muller, Polina, danser sa vie , came out in cinemas in 2016. In April 2019 he was appointed to the Academy of Fine Arts in the new « choreography » section.

Since October 2006, the Ballet Preljocaj is settled at the Pavillon Noir, designed by the famous architect Rudy Ricciotti in Aix-en-Provence. Performances are programmed all year round, Angelin Preljocaj’s creations and also invited companies, as well as local actions.

Since 2015, Ballet Preljocaj has also been involved in helping young dancers enter the professional world through Ballet Preljocaj Junior.

The Ballet Preljocaj is now composed of 30 permanent dancers and performs about 120 dates per year on tour, in France and abroad.

WHO IS ANGELIN PRELJOCAJ?

ANGELIN PRELJOCAJ was born in the Paris region, in France, and began studying classical ballet before turning to contemporary dance, which he studied with Karin Waehner. In 1980, he went to New York to work with Zena Rommett and Merce Cunningham. Afterward, he resumed his studies in France where his teachers included the American choreographer Viola Farber and the French Quentin Rouillier. He then joined Dominique Bagouet before founding his own company in December 1984.

Angelin Preljocaj collaborates regularly with other artists in various fields such as music (Goran Vejvoda, Air, Laurent Garnier, Granular Synthesis, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Thomas Bangalter), visual arts (Claude Lévêque, Subodh Gupta, Adel Abdessemed), design (Constance Guisset), fashion (Jean Paul Gaultier, Azzedine Alaïa, Igor Chapurin), drawing (Enki Bilal), literature (Pascal Quignard, Éric Reinhardt, Laurent Mauvignier), animation movies (Boris Labbé). His productions are now part of the repertoire of many companies, many of which also commission original production from him, notably La Scala of Milan , the New York City Ballet and the Paris National Opera Ballet. In 2019, he was appointed to the Academy of Fine Arts in the new « choreography » section. After Swan Lake in 2020 and Deleuze / Hendrix in 2021, he created and directed Lully’s opera Atys for the Grand Théâtre de Genève in 2022. At the same time, he created a short choreography for the Danse Europe! application. For Dior, he created the choreography and the film Roman Night with the dancers of the Rome Opera Ballet. He also participated in the television series Irma Vep by Olivier Assayas, as an actor and choreographer. ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION

The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 500 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 300 performances for audiences of over 100,000. Visit Joyce.org for more information.

VISION STATEMENT

The Joyce Theater Foundation is committed to fostering and supporting a diverse and inclusive environment, both on and off stage. We embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms, and value the rich experiences and perspectives that arise from differences in race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and cognitive and physical ability.

We strive to counteract the social injustices and racism that exist within our communities, our nation, and our world. Our aim as an organization is to embody the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.

To achieve this, we will:

• Create and implement proactive diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives;

• Establish and maintain a culture of safe sharing, intentional listening, learning, and growth;

• Engage with and support disenfranchised communities by sharing information and resources and ensuring accessibility;

• Develop metrics and conduct regular reviews of our programs and policies to hold ourselves accountable and shift as neededs.

With these goals in place and our Vision Statement in mind, we are dedicated to the continued learning and growth needed to foster an inclusive environment for all. This is an ongoing process and by nature will be an evolving statement.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.

We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.

We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.

It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
