Once the rut slows down, surviving bucks typically return to their core areas—finding refuge amid stands of timber and vegetative understory. Besides feeding along the edge of old-growth fields and food plots, embattled bucks rely heavily on woodland areas with access to hard mast nutrition, as well as concealment and bedding sites. Whitetails typically spend a good portion of their time amid some type of vegetative cover. Today, deer hunters and land managers are working to ensure that the timber is properly managed, in turn, maintaining and creating woodland sanctuaries throughout the state.
