“Architects, sculptors, painters, we all must return to the crafts!... Let us then create a new guild of craftsmen without the class distinctions that raise an arrogant barrier

between craftsmen and artists.

Hello. My name is Josh Wilcox. I am a native Oklahoman, born and raised in Oklahoma City. I am currently an architecture student at the University of Oklahoma where I am pursuing a degree in architecture with a minor in cosntruction science and a certificate in entrepreneurship and real estate development. I am a nontraditional student, having taken time off from school to work; then, returning to earn an associate’s degree in general studies before transferring to the University of Oklahoma. My interest in architecture comes from my grandfather, who was a draftsman for many years before retiring. He and I are very close and share a love of art, woodworking, modeling, architecture, and history. This love of history helped push me toward architecture, wanting to help preserve our history through preservation of historical buildings as well as designing new buildings that compliment our history while embracing the modern age and looking to the future.

The Whelk

3rd Year Design Studio

The concept of The Whelk, named for the lightning whelk, a culturally significant commodity of native tribes in the area, is to create a seamless connection between water, land, and sky on the shore of Lake Thunderbird while employing biomimicry to mirror the seamless and systematic beauty of natural structures using the golden ratio. Functioning as a boathouse, connects indoor and outdoor and creates spaces for a variety of indoor and outdoor activities as well as connecting the land to the water over the boat docks and to the sky through skylights and louvered openings. mirrors the spiral of the lightning whelk shell with the panels of the roof focused around the central point, diverting and collecting rainwater Curtain walls provide visual connections for occupants to the natural landscape around the site. Through ittereations in the design process, The Whelk evolved multiple times to solve design issues centered around passive climate control, water redirection, user experience, and connecting the water, land, and sky.

Trattoria Spring 2025

Year Design Studio

The idea behind the design of Trattoria is one of connection. This mean connecting the educational hub that dominates most of Norman, with the residents and businesses that call this city home. This idea also involves connecting people with nature, education with profession, business with pleasure, food with the idea of freshness, and, most importantly, people with other people. In the name of sustainability, the structure will utilize passive cooling through the means of two dogtrots carved into the building. These gaps allow for wind to pass through, under the second story, to cool the structure via natural airflow. The school and accompanying bistro will utilize an on-site greenhouse, herb garden, and vinyard to offset the carbon footprint of the structure and ensure freshness of ingredients. These greenspaces, along with a community garden, will instill the biophilic nature of visitors and students by connecting them with nature and their food. The community garden will be open to the residential area near the site to connect the community together and provide healthy, sustainable produce.

The site is located on Santa Fe Ave between Eufalla St and Comanche St, about a ten minute walk north-north-east of the University of Oklahoma campus. With the University and a residential area south of the site, the southernmost program is the administration wing, where students and residents can enroll in classes. As one travels north, they follow the progression of the students: enrollment with the administration, study and lecture in the classrooms and theater, hands-on practice in the teaching kitchens, and, finally, a profession as cooks in the bistro. To the north of the site is bustling downtown Norman, full of businesses, clubs, shops, and churches. The bistro and wine tasting room are located with this in mind. Business people, shoppers, and churchgoers will be able to walk to the bistro and be welcomed with a covered patio dining area, a greenhouse of fresh ingredients, fine foods and wines, and a rooftop dining area with a view of the adjacent park. The site is across James Garner Ave from the train station, where travelers may stop on their trips between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth, Texas. With the bistro so close to the station, travelers will have a fresh, healthy option where they can quickly get a bite to eat before reboarding the train.
