Eccentric extracurriculars:

‘The

Thursday Murder Club’ meets on Netflix

Beginning in the 1970s, “Quincy” ruled investigative television for the older adult demographic. By 1984, Agatha Christie’s titular British amateur detective Miss Marple took up the mantle on BBC. These days, there is a new detective collective coming to the small screen. This time, however, it comes in film form.

Starring Helen Mirren (“The Queen,” 2006), Pierce Brosnan (“The Thomas Crown Affair,” 1999), Celia Imrie (“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” 2011) and Ben Kingsley (“Gandhi,” 1982) in leading roles, “The Thursday Murder Club” premieres Thursday, Aug. 28, on Netflix.

Based on the 2020 novel of the same name by English novelist and television presenter Richard Osman, “The Thursday Murder Club” is described by Netflix Tudum as “a whodunit with teeth — false ones, of course.” Set in a retirement community in a fictional town in Kent, England, four friends — ex-intelligence agent Elizabeth (Mirren), former union activist Ron (Brosnan), former psychiatrist Ibrahim (Kingsley) and retired nurse Joyce (Imrie) — would prefer to keep their minds active by solving murders rather than playing bridge like the other residents. But when the group finds themselves face-toface with a real murder, the stakes are raised and solving the crime becomes much more for the friends than a clever and entertaining way to pass the time.

Directed by filmmaker Chris Columbus, of “Home Alone” (1990), “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993) and Harry Potter franchise fame, the new film straddles the line between the comedic and the macabre, placing death squarely at the center of the conversation.

“There’s a wonderful mystery at its core, so mystery fans will be very happy,” Columbus told Tudum regarding the film, adding that “thematically, it’s interesting that we’ve got four elderly people who are living in a retirement community and who are fascinated by death and murder. They are facing their own demise, yet at the same time they are obsessed with studying cold cases. I fell in love thematically with that. It’s comedic, but it’s also very emotional.”

While Columbus serves as the film’s sole director, another well-known director is closely attached to the project. Steven Spielberg, the mind behind such films as “Jaws” (1975), “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” (1984) and “Jurassic Park” (1993) among many others, founded Amblin Entertainment, the film company co-producing “The Thursday Murder Club” in conjunction with Netflix. And much like Spielberg with his seven-time Oscar nominated “The Fabelmans” (2022), author Osman found the basis for his tale lurking in the beauty and absurdity of real life.

“You just sit and chat with these people and they’ve lived these extraordinary lives,” Osman said of the retirees living in his real-life mother’s community; one not dissimilar to the village in “The Thursday Murder Club.” “You hear these amazing stories and gossip and wisdom, [and] you think, ‘These people are so overlooked.’”

“The idea that these people with their wisdom and their invisibility would be the perfect people to solve [a crime] is exactly where ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ comes from,” Osman elaborated, adding, “put them together, and they can achieve anything.”

Don’t miss the chance to join the “The Thursday Murder Club” when it premieres Thursday, Aug. 28, on Netflix.

“Upload” (Aug. 25)

The fourth and final season of this sci-fi series follows a sentient AI spiraling out of control, threatening to destroy Lakeview and the real world beyond it. With greedy tech executives, unresolved mysteries and heartbreak — in both virtual reality and real life — everyone must join forces in a desperate attempt to stop the digital apocalypse and save humanity from being erased. Robbie Amell, Andy Allo, Kevin Bigley, Allegra Edwards, Zainab Johnson and Owen Daniels star.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 2” (Aug. 24)

In this 2022 sequel, Dr. Robotnik makes his return with a new partner-in-crime, Knuckles, who joins him in the search for an emerald that can destroy civilizations. Sonic, however, has a new sidekick of his own, and knows he’s fast enough to get the gemstone first.

Where all the top choices can be found in one place!

“Fantasy Football Ruined Our Lives” (Aug. 27)

Directed by Alessio Maria Federici, this feature-length flick sees a group of friends thrown into uncertainty when one of their members, Gianni (Enrico Borello), doesn’t show up to his own wedding. As they search for answers, the friends find themselves overwhelmed by secrets, accusations, death threats and explosive group chats brought to light, leading them to wonder if something bad really did happen to Gianni.

Starring Giacomo Ferrara, Francesco Russo, Antonio Banno and Caterina Guzzanti.

‘The Music Man’ brings good trouble to River City classic corner

As many actors might play a certain role, some parts are forever associated with one performer ... and with due respect to Hugh Jackman for his run in a Broadway revival not too long ago, Robert Preston owns “The Music Man” in the minds of many fans. Turner Classic Movies shows the 1962 screen version of the popular musical Monday, Aug. 25, as part of a “Summer Under the Stars” day saluting co-star Shirley Jones.

Reprising his New York stage role, Preston is legendary as professor Harold Hill, a con man who convinces the residents of River City, Iowa to fund a youth marching band. He suspects that town librarian Marian (Jones) will question his motives, so he tries to preempt her by romancing her in a ruse that turns real. Buddy Hackett, Hermione Gingold, Paul Ford and a very young “Ronny” Howard also are in the spirited cast. The great score includes “Till There Was You,” “Goodnight, My Someone” and the marching-band favorite, “Seventy-Six Trombones.”

“The Last Rhinos: A New Hope” (Aug. 25)

Photographer Ami Vitale embarks on a powerful journey to capture one of the world’s most ambitious conservation efforts of rescuing the northern white rhinoceros from the brink of extinction. With only two surviving females, a team of scientists dares to attempt the impossible — creating life through the world’s first surrogate rhino pregnancy.

more retro rewinds

“Square Pegs” (Catchy Comedy, Sunday, Aug. 24): Long before “Sex and the City” became a TV vehicle for her, Sarah Jessica Parker had a weekly showcase — short-lived but critically acclaimed — with this 198283 CBS comedy, sharing a “Binge” day here with a series version of “Ferris Bueller.” In the show from “Saturday Night Live” veteran Anne Beatts, Parker and Amy Linker play high-schoolers determined to break into the popular inner circle of their freshman class, though that’s much easier wished than done. Jami Gertz plays their nemesis.

“The Living Daylights” (MGM+, Tuesday, Aug. 26): Timothy Dalton had both his supporters and his detractors for the harder edge he brought to the role of James Bond, following the Roger Moore era of the franchise, in this 1987 adventure. Agent 007’s main mission is to help a KGB general (Jeroen Krabbe) defect, and the effort eventually brings the spy into contact with a musician (Maryam D’Abo) with ties to the official. An arms dealer (Joe Don Baker, who had a different part in Pierce Brosnan’s Bond movies later) also is a concern for our hero. Dalton would return for one more picture in the series, “Licence to Kill” (1989).

Liberty host Mystics in key late-season matchup at Barclays Center

The WNBA continues this week with another exciting marquee matchup featuring the Washington Mystics as they take on the New York Liberty Thursday, Aug. 28, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, with tip-off airing exclusively on Prime Video.

With the WNBA post-season fast approaching, every game carries a little more weight — and Thursday’s late-season clash between the New York Liberty and Washington Mystics is no exception.

For the Liberty, they enter the contest with an impressive 17-9 won-lost record (at press time), holding first place in the Eastern Conference by roughly 1.5 games over the Atlanta Dream. All season long, the Liberty have showcased one of the most balanced and dynamic rosters in the entire WNBA — anchored by former MVP Breanna Stewart (18.3 points, 6.5 rebounds), veteran center Jonquel Jones (13.6 points, 9.1 rebounds) and superstar Sabrina Ionescu, who remains the cornerstone of New York’s success.

This season in particular, Ionescu has elevated her game to a new level, especially on the defensive end. The all-star guard is averaging 19.7 points, 5.7 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game, making her one of the WNBA’s most well-rounded players in recent memory.

Meanwhile, the Mystics, who enter the contest with a 13-13 record (at press time), remain deep in the playoff hunt as they sit in fourth place in the Eastern Conference. First-year Mystics head coach Sydney Johnson has helped the team elevate to new heights, especially with breakout seasons from rookies Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen. Iriafen, an all-star selection who averages 11.9 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, is quickly emerging as a key contributor at both ends of the court. As such, she is someone the Mystics will lean on against a deep Liberty squad.

Fans won’t want to miss this matchup as the New York Liberty host the Washington Mystics Thursday, Aug. 28, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, with all the action broadcasting exclusively on Prime Video.

“Being there felt like it was a major career moment for everybody. It was so delicious and fun being all together. I’m happy with how it turned out, and that it’s getting this reaction. That doesn’t always happen; it was so cool to be a part of.” — Krysten Ritter of “Dexter: Resurrection” in an interview with Deadline.

Rebecca Wisocky of “The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox” on Hulu and “Ghosts” on CBS and Paramount+: A resident of both American coasts, she has been a guest star on many New Yorkbased series including “Law & Order,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.”

Kelly Osbourne of “Lego Masters Jr.” on Fox and Hulu: She earned a Primetime Emmy Award with the rest of her family for the reality show “The Osbournes” in 2002, and she later competed on “Dancing With the Stars.”

“We make fun of things that are popular, and we make fun of ourselves, and I’ve learned to make fun of myself on a public stage and show the lighter side of me. It’s been nice.” — Julie Chen Moonves of “Big Brother” in an interview with People.

“No writer of Noah’s [Hawley] caliber isn’t cognizant of the things we’re grappling with. Storytelling, regardless of it’s futuristic or if it’s historical, is always going to be about the time in which it’s written as much as the time in which it’s set. Noah’s writing about what he sees in front of him.” — Timothy Olyphant in “Alien: Earth” speaking with Variety.
