The Moses Gray Midwest District

Moses W. Gray: A Life Well Lived

The Board of Directors, chapter presidents and all members of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. pay tribute to member Moses W. Gray. Although we are saddening at the passing of our brother, we salute the life he lived and the example he set for the next generation of leaders. His accomplishments were expansive, and he was the epitome of excellence throughout his life’s journey. He embodied leadership, advocacy, and distinction across many industries and community causes. It is impossible to encapsulate all the lives he touched, the people he influenced, and the exponential impact he made in society during his time among us.

A shining example of a principal belief the100 organization was founded on —- What They See Is What They’ll Be® —- Mr. Gray lived a life that was extremely useful and honorable while showing compassion to others. His service to his community made a lasting difference in the lives of young people. The accomplishments of Moses W. Gray are well documented and archived. From the 100 Black Men of Indianapolis, Inc. and the headquarters of 100 Black Men of America, Inc., at Indiana University and General Motors, and especially through the extensive collection housed at the Indiana Historical Society. His footprint and impact are surpassed by the smile he always displayed when entering a room or engaging with a young person.

His many awards bear testimony to the accomplishments made throughout his lifetime. As a founding member of 100 Black Men of America, Inc., where he served as the initial Secretary, we want to shed light on his impact within the 100 family. Gray was always an active member of the 100 Black Men movement and organization, at a national and local level. A founding member and president of 100 Black Men of Indianapolis, Inc., his service was extensive and included working on numerous committees, programs, and community initiatives. Gray was instrumental in the development and success of the 100 Black Men of Indianapolis, Inc. Summer Reading Academy.

At the national level, Gray served as secretary of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. for eight years. He was acknowledged for his commitment, work, and dedication to the 100 Black Men with the following awards and recognitions: the national Midwest District named in his honor, Indianapolis’ Centurion Club Award in 2022, and The Moses Gray Man of the Year Award also in his honor.

Gray was historically involved in causes to address racial justice and inequities including police brutality, racism in schools, health disparities, and other issues directly impacting the lives of children. That passion for youth extended to his many affiliations including the Wilma Rudolph Foundation, the State Council on Adoptable Children, where he served as president in 1972, the Black Adoption Committee, serving as president in 1973, the Indiana Association for the Rights of Children, where he was the inaugural president in 1974.

His accomplishments at General Motors and business leadership within the automotive industry spanned 30 years. He was known to sports fans because he played football at Indiana University and professionally for the Indianapolis Warriors and the New York Titans. Mr. Moses W. Gray is a proven leader, a 100 Black Men Statesmen, he was a friend to many, and will forever remain an example of a life well lived. We will update members on the celebration of life for Brother Gray as information becomes available.

Thank you for participating in the Summit Meeting of the Moses Gray Midwest District of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc., held in Milwaukee, WI. This gathering honors the legacy of Moses Gray, the founding Secretary of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. and a founding member of the 100 Black Men of Indianapolis, Inc. By coming together for this summit, you continue the path he helped establish—committing yourselves to learning, collaboration, and strengthening the work carried out in our chapters.

The agenda for this summit focuses on meaningful conversations, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas that support the mission of our organization. As you engage with members from chapters across the district and share best practices, I hope you leave inspired with new strategies and renewed energy to advance the work within your home chapters.

As we look ahead, we hope you will join us at the 40th Annual Conference, where members from across the country will gather to celebrate our shared mission and continue strengthening our organization. The conference will provide valuable training sessions, important organizational updates, and meaningful opportunities for engagement that will help chapters continue to grow and expand their impact.

The state of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. remains strong, and the collective work of our chapters continues to uplift the youth and communities we serve. Together, we are building momentum and positioning the organization for an even stronger future.

Greetings Brothers of the 100,

It is with great anticipation that we announce the upcoming 4th Annual Moses Gray Midwest District Summit, hosted this year in partnership with the 100 Black Men of Milwaukee and their President, Brother Joseph Addison. On behalf of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc., it is my honor and privilege to welcome you to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on March 7, 2026, for a powerful convening of leadership, fellowship, and action.

The Moses Gray Midwest District Summit is more than an annual meeting, it is a reaffirmation of our mission and a celebration of our Brotherhood. Together, we will examine critical topics that impact our youth, families, and communities, and commit ourselves to building brighter futures. This year’s program includes an inspiring discussion on building the future, taking us from Sesame Street to Hillman College, as we explore how early learning connects to higher education. We will engage with local law enforcement and judicial leaders in the session Building Strong Partnerships: Law & Order, followed by a powerful conversation on Unlocking Potential: ABC’s to Graduation, which focuses on strategies to help our youth succeed academically. Later in the day, Building the Future: Pacifiers to Head of Households will highlight the role of local companies in strengthening families and communities, and our closing session, The Result of Mentoring: Mentees to Mentors, will showcase how mentorship transforms lives and creates generational leadership.

In addition to these sessions, we are proud to offer a Health Screening through the partnership of Chi Eta Phi and the C.H. Mason Health Clinic, ensuring that health and wellness remain central to our collective work. As always, this Summit provides a vital space for networking, exchanging ideas, and renewing our shared commitment to mentoring, education, health and wellness, and economic empowerment.

We look forward to an inspiring and impactful Summit in Milwaukee and to the outcomes that will ripple through our chapters and communities long after this gathering concludes.

Warm regards, Andre

Mayor Cavalier Johnson City of Milwaukee Mayor

Mayor Cavalier Johnson took office as Acting Mayor of the City of Milwaukee in late 2021 and set out immediately to build a safer city. He has prioritized violence reduction, economic development, and roadway safety. Before taking on his role as Acting Mayor, Johnson served as Common Council President while representing the city’s 2nd Aldermanic District.

In April of 2022, Mayor Johnson was elected as the forty-fifth chief executive of the City of Milwaukee, winning with more than seventy percent of the vote. He is the first Black Mayor elected in the city and only the fourth elected mayor in the past sixty-two years.

Mayor Johnson’s commitment to public service began at an early age when he was selected by the YMCA to participate in a pre-college program for low-income Milwaukee Public School students. That program, Sponsor-A-Scholar, instilled in him a passion to make Milwaukee better for future generations.

Mayor Johnson was born on November 5th, 1986, in the 53206 zip code of Milwaukee. Growing up, his family moved frequently until middle school. Mayor Johnson attended a different Milwaukee Public School almost every year. He has seen violence, evictions, and food insecurity — challenges common in urban poverty. He brings that lived experience to his work as Mayor.

After graduating from Bay View High School, Mayor Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and

returned home to work for the Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board (MAWIB), now Employ Milwaukee. His focus included working with at-risk youth, youth entering the workforce for the first time, and adults retooling to enter the workforce.

Before his election as Alderman, he served as a staff assistant in the Mayor’s Office, where he worked with community and faith leaders to find creative solutions to pressing issues facing families.

Mayor Johnson remains deeply committed to the community, having served on the boards of the Milwaukee YMCA, ACLU-Wisconsin and Milwaukee Community Brainstorming Conference.

He and his wife, Dominique, have one son and twin daughters and live in the Near West Side Neighborhood of Milwaukee.

Welcome to Milwaukee!

We, the 100 Black Men of Milwaukee, Inc., would like to welcome you all to the City of Milwaukee. We are proud to host the 100 Black Men of America Midwest Summit and thank you for your ongoing leadership and dedication to service, education, and mentoring.

We come together at a time when there is deep division in our communities. As leaders, it's our responsibility to rise above these differences and work together to break down silos, find common ground, and lead with purpose and unity.

This year's theme, "Empowering the Next Generation, One Mentor at a Time," emphasized to us that mentoring can make a powerful difference in our society. We show our youth the value of civil communication, giving back, and improving our future by working together and having respectful conversations every day.

Milwaukee is delighted to have you here. We look forward to sharing the spirit of this city with you and learning from your experiences and insights. It has a lot of culture, strength, and opportunity. May our time together make us closer as brothers, help us see things more clearly, and remind us of our duty to empower the next generation, one mentor at a time.

Welcome to Milwaukee. We are better together.

A proud graduate of John F. Kennedy High School, Wade went on to earn his undergraduate and Master’s degrees from Tulane University and Clarke College, establishing a strong academic foundation rooted in public service, communication, and leadership.

Wade began his career as a Foreman for the City of Cleveland before pursuing his goal to follow his father into the banking industry. Motivated by his father’s support for Black-owned businesses in Cleveland during the 1970s, Wade chose a banking career focused on economic empowerment and community impact.

Later, Wade transitioned into journalism, joining Cleveland’s historic Call & Post Newspaper after a close friend urged him to contribute his expertise. He started as Business Editor, later serving as Religion Editor, where he quickly built a reputation as a trusted and versatile voice. Noting his acumen and commitment, the late Constance Harper promoted Wade to Political Reporter and assigned him to cover major state and national stories. In 2011, Harper broadened his portfolio again, naming him Sports Editor, making Wade one of the few journalists to cover business, religion, politics, and sports concurrently.

Throughout his career, Wade earned recognition for fair, balanced, and insightful reporting. His ability to analyze political, social, and economic

trends while remaining objective earned him the trust of community leaders, policymakers, and national figures. His notable interviews include Bernice King, civil rights attorney Fred Gray, and Rev. Al Sharpton. One of his most challenging assignments was in 2009, reporting extensively on the Anthony Sowell case, in which Sowell was convicted of murdering at least 11 women in Cleveland.
