In Johnson & Wales University’s Animal Science program, your classroom will often be a local farm, a horse barn or a veterinary clinic. Working with real animals to learn how to handle and care for a variety of species, you’ll explore how to apply anatomy, chemistry, nutrition and genetics to the study of animal management, breeding, behavior and welfare.
Choose a general course of study or specialize in one of two areas:
Pre-Veterinary Studies Specialization
Get qualified to pursue a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. You’ll complete major prerequisite course requirements for application to American Veterinary Medical Association–accredited veterinary schools within the United States as well as other animal and science-related graduate studies programs.
Equine Specialization
This specialization honors our legacy of excellence in equine education while focusing on the science that impacts how to select, care for and manage horses involved in all aspects of the equine industry.

The Animal Science program at JWU offers many distinctive experiences — you'll enjoy frequent visits to local partner sites such as Roger Williams Park Zoo and Mystic Aquarium, as well as opportunities to go on week-long faculty-led trips. You may also be part of the team that cares for the hens at our on-campus chicken coop, which students have dubbed the "Coop-a-Cabana."

ANSC2010 Principles of Animal Nutrition
While exploring the impact of nutrition on animal species, students in this course team up with culinary students in the Sustainable Food Systems course to conduct research on how nutritional programs for our on-campus chicken coop can impact the quality and taste of the eggs our hens produce. Omelet, anyone?
Reins Take the
For students interested in horseback riding, we offer a variety of electives to practice riding skills and disciplines. Students of any major and skill level can take riding classes at any of our official partner facilities in Rhode Island and Massachusetts or at a private facility of your choice; new partnerships may be established based on student interest. Riding lesson fees vary by facility.
