Student Leadership Team

MEMBERSHIP OF TEAM The Student Leadership Team (SLT) is comprised of 42 student leaders from across all year levels. Some positions are available exclusively to Year 12 students. The team comprises the following roles: • • • • • • • •

Student Leadership Team

ROLE OF THE STUDENT LEADERSHIP TEAM (SLT) •

The Student Leadership Team fulfills three primary roles: • • •

Formal representation of the College at important events Leading initiatives and actions on behalf of the student body Enable student voice and agency to be considered within the decision making processes at the College

Whilst formal representation is important, a significant focus is placed on developing initiatives and actions to enhance the connection to the College and improve the overall educational experience. In particular, the SLT will: •

• •

Develop a vision for student leadership for the coming year. The vision should be consistent with the College Mission Statement and will detail shared agreements which drive our work. Model faith, mission and social justice leadership. Develop and implement a range of School and House activities that work towards achievement of the vision.

Encourage broad student involvement in the full range of school life. Conduct whole school assemblies in consultation with the Deputy Principal-Student and Engagement and the Deputy Principal Faith and Mission. Provide a voice for the student population and advocate for all students in the ongoing development of the school community. Provide advice to Deputy Principal Students and Engagement as requested.

The Student Leadership Team is the main forum for leadership education, guidance and administration. The team meets once a cycle during lunchtime and will generally be chaired by the College Captains to discuss the practical implementation of the leaders’ duties or issues affecting the College as a whole. The Deputy Principal Students and Engagement, Deputy Principal Faith and Mission and Student Leadership Coordinator are present at these meetings. Other staff may be invited to make a contribution at the discretion of the Deputy Principal Students and Engagement.

Student Leadership Team

REQUIRED STANDARDS Student leadership at John Paul College is a privilege afforded to those students who have exemplary records. Students who do not uphold the expected behavioural standards or involve themselves in the full life of the College may not be successful with their application. In particular, members of the SLT must: • •

Present in correct uniform and with appropriate personal grooming every day Model the expected learning behaviours whilst in the classroom

Model the behaviours as outlined in College policies including the PBL Policy, JPC5 and Student Code of Conduct Understand, support and embrace the Catholic identity of the College and model the charisms and values as outlined in the College Mission statement Prioritise school activities and representative duties over personal activities Uphold the shared agreements developed by the team

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS OF ALL TEAM MEMBERS As part of the Student Leadership Team, all members make an undertaking to meet the following requirements to the highest level: • • •

Demonstrate a commitment to their appointed area Act as a positive role model for other students at John Paul College Support the College and represent student views, using the channels of communication which are open to all students. Personal qualities, including reliability, honesty, respect and concern for others, are expected to be visible in the students chosen for leadership. Student leaders must exercise leadership in the meeting of expectations concerning school rules and appearance. Work as a Team Leader. While focusing on the area of responsibility delegated as part of the Leadership Team, leaders will need to assist other leaders whenever possible and work cooperatively on shared tasks. Communicate clearly and regularly with students, the Leadership team and staff. This will involve leading and/or speaking at School, House and Year Level Assemblies, within the Pastoral Care Group, and during meetings. Attend Student Leadership Team meetings. If there is an important reason for non-attendance, an apology must be given to the meeting convenor prior to the meeting.

Assist the Deputy Principal Students and Engagement and the Deputy Principal Faith and Mission when required to promote the College to the community. This may include speaking at parent information sessions and conducting tours of the school. Students will need to be available for College Discovery Mornings.

Please note: Inability to perform the functions of the position, lack of willingness to undertake the requirement of the position or behavioural misdemeanours after being appointed to the position may result in the incumbent being withdrawn from the position. A process of consultation will occur between the Deputy Principal Students and Engagement, Principal, student and parent.

NOMINATION AND SELECTION PROCESS Student submits an online nomination form according to the published timeline (see Page 17) All applications must be submitted by 4:00pm on Thursday 19th August. (Year 7 students will be appointed during Term 1 2027.) All students who are nominating for a position are encouraged to speak to the relevant current Captain(s), Deputy Princpal Students and Engagement or Deputy Principal Faith and Mission before submitting their application. To facilitate this, an information session will be scheduled for Thursday 13th August. This session is not compulsory but your attendance is encouraged and is a strong indicator of your commitment to the process. Please note: Students are encouraged to apply for more than one position and should complete a new online nomination form for each position. a) For all Year 12 positions within the SLT, a confidential survey of both students and staff will be taken. The survey form will contain the biography written as part of the application. Whilst the results of these surveys hold significant importance, they are not the sole determinant of those students selected for interviews. b) A short list of applicants for interview will then be chosen. Following the interview process, the interview panel will make recommendations to the Principal. All interviews will take place as per the timelime included in this booklet (see Page 15). Students must be available to attend an interview during this time. c) The final appointments will be made and announced by the Principal. d) All Year 12 2027 members of the newly appointed Student Leadership Team will be required to attend a Leadership Camp on Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd October.

EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP TEAM COLLEGE CAPTAIN (TWO TO BE APPOINTED) The College Captains hold the highest student leadership positions within John Paul College. They play a vital role in shaping the faith, culture, spirit, and direction of the school community. As Christ-centred student leaders, they are entrusted with representing the student body, actively living out the College Mission, and inspiring others through purposeful action, service and spiritual commitment. College Captains are expected to lead with integrity and inclusivity, serving as faith-filled role models for all students. They work collaboratively with staff and fellow student leaders to promote student voice, strengthen engagement, support learning, and foster a deep commitment to social justice and service.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES 1. Faith, Mission, and Social Justice Leadership • Model Catholic Values: Live out and visibly model the John Paul College Mission, Catholic identity, and foundational values in daily school life. • Lead Liturgy and Prayer: Coordinate and lead prayer, reflections, and liturgical elements at school assemblies, masses, and community events in consultation with the Deputy Principal Faith and Mission. • Champion Social Justice: Drive school-wide awareness of social justice issues, leading meaningful service initiatives and supporting House Leaders with their respective House charity causes. • Promote Faith Life: Actively encourage student participation in ministry, retreats, and school faith development opportunities. 2. Strategic Team Leadership • Chair the Student Leadership Team: Serve as co-chairs of the Student Leadership Team, driving the vision, goal-setting, and strategic plan for the student body. • Mentor Student Leaders: Guide, support, and collaborate with House Leaders and portfolio leaders to ensure alignment with wider school goals. • Facilitate Meetings: Convene and run efficient, regular Student Leadership Team meetings to build team unity and momentum. 3. Learning, Engagement, and Advocacy • Drive Student Voice: Act as the primary conduit between students and staff, providing informed feedback to the College Executive on student perspectives. • Enhance School Spirit: Collaborate with Learning and Engagement Leaders to deliver initiatives that boost academic engagement and active participation in school life. 4. College Representation and Executive Communication • Act as School Ambassadors: Represent the College as positive, articulate ambassadors at formal and informal events with parents, community organisations and other schools. • Liaise with Executive Staff: Maintain regular, formal communication through scheduled meetings with the Principal, Deputy Principal Students and Engagement, Deputy Principal Faith and Mission and Deputy Principal Learning and Innovation. • Undertake Additional Responsibilities: Complete other leadership duties as required by the College Executive team.

COLLEGE VICE CAPTAIN (TWO TO BE APPOINTED) The College Vice-Captains hold executive student leadership positions within John Paul College. They play a vital role in supporting the College Captains to shape the faith, culture, spirit, and direction of the school community. As Christ-centred student leaders, they work in close partnership with the Captains to represent the student body, live out the College Mission and lead through practical service and commitment. College Vice-Captains are expected to lead with integrity and inclusivity, serving as faith-filled role models for all students. They work collaboratively with the College Captains, staff and fellow student leaders to elevate student voice, manage peer networks, and foster a deep commitment to social justice, service, learning and engagement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES 1. Support of Faith, Mission, and Social Justice • Uphold Catholic Values: Visibly model the John Paul College Mission, Catholic identity and foundational values in daily school life. • Assist in Liturgy and Prayer: Support the College Captains in organizing and delivering prayer, reflections, and liturgical elements at school assemblies and events. • Coordinate Service Initiatives: Work directly with House Leaders to operationalize social justice campaigns and track the progress of House charity causes. • Engage in Faith Life: Actively participate in and champion school ministry, retreats, and faith development opportunities among the student body. 2. Operational Team Leadership • Deputy Chair of the Student Leadership Team: Serve as vice-chairs of the Student Leadership Team, assisting the Captains in implementing the strategic plan and vision for the year. • Portfolio Oversight: Take direct responsibility for coordinating specific student sub-committees or working groups (e.g., learning or engagement). • Meeting Logistics: Assist in setting agendas, recording minutes, and ensuring action items from Student Leadership Team meetings are completed. 3. Learning, Engagement, and Action • Promote Student Voice: Assist the Captains in gathering feedback from across all year levels to ensure diverse student perspectives reach the school executive. • School Initiatives: Partner with Learning and Engagement Leaders to physically deliver events, activities, and peer-mentoring programs that boost school spirit.

4. College Representation and Communication • Support School Ambassadors: Represent the College alongside or in the absence of the College Captains at formal and informal events with parents, community organisations, and other schools. • Assembly Support: Assist in the logistical planning, tech setup, and smooth delivery of all School Assemblies. • Liaise with Staff: Attend scheduled progress meetings with the Student Leadership Team, Deputy Principal Students and Engagement, and Deputy Principal Faith and Mission.

LEADERSHIP TEAM SENIOR HOUSE LEADER (TWO YEAR 12 STUDENTS PER HOUSE) House Leaders hold vital student leadership positions within John Paul College, driving the culture, identity, and spirit of their respective Houses. Operating under the strategic direction of the College Captains, Vice-Captains and the Deputy Principal Faith and Mission, they are responsible for localising the College Mission within their House teams. As Christcentred servant leaders, they inspire participation, build deep peer connections, and foster a welcoming environment where every student experiences a sense of belonging. House Leaders lead with energy and inclusivity, serving as direct role models within the House Pastoral Groups across all year levels. Under the guidance of alp College Vice Captain,they work collaboratively with their House Leaders, House staff, and all student leaders to elevate student voice, champion House charity causes, and maximize participation in all sporting, cultural, and faith-based College events.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES 1. House Faith, Mission, and Charity Action • Model House and College Values: Embody the John Paul College Mission and the unique charism, history, and values of their specific House. • Lead House Liturgy and Assembly Prayer: Help prepare and lead prayer, reflections, and liturgies for House assemblies and gatherings. • Drive House Social Justice: Take direct operational ownership of the designated House charity, leading awareness campaigns and fundraising initiatives under the guidance of the Vice-Captain and Deputy Principal Faith and Mission. • Promote Faith Participation: Actively encourage and rally House members to fully participate in school ministry, social justice events, and retreats. 2. House Team Leadership and Community Spirit • Be active Student Leadership Team Members: Serve as active members of the wider Student Leadership Team, collaborating with the Captains and Vice-Captains to execute the whole-school strategic plan. • Build House Identity: Generate high levels of enthusiasm, pride, and healthy competition across all year levels within the House. • Mentor Younger Students: Act as a peer mentor and approachable leader for junior students, particularly supporting the transition of Year 7 students into the House.

3. Engagement, Participation, and Activity Execution • Maximise Carnival Participation: Lead, organise, and coordinate student participation, house chants, and team entry lists for Swimming, Athletics, and Cross-Country Carnivals. • Support Learning and Engagement: Partner with Learning and Engagement Leaders to implement localized peer-support networks, academic challenges, and wellbeing initiatives within the House. • Foster Student Voice: Gather grass-roots feedback and ideas from House members and present these perspectives at Student Leadership Team meetings. 4. Local Representation and Communication • Lead House Assemblies: Help plan, script and deliver regular House Assemblies in close consultation with the House Leader (staff). • Liaise with House Leaders (staff): Maintain constant, clear communication through regular planning meetings with the House Leader (staff). • Support Whole-School Events: Assist the Captains and Vice-Captains during whole-school events, open days, and liturgical celebrations as the visible face of their House.

LEARNING LEADERS (TWO X YEAR 12 AND TWO X YEAR 11 STUDENTS) The Learning Leaders hold specialised student leadership positions within John Paul College. Operating alongside the House Leaders and under the strategic direction of the College Captains and Vice-Captains, they are responsible for driving a vibrant culture of academic curiosity, collaboration, and educational engagement across the student body. As Christ-centred leaders, they champion the idea that learning is a lifelong pursuit, ensuring that the student perspective actively shapes the academic environment of the College. The Learning Leaders lead with intellectual curiosity, integrity, and inclusivity, serving as a role model for academic growth and perseverance. They work collaboratively with the College Student Executive, relevant staff and the wider Student Leadership Team to design initiatives that celebrate academic achievement, support peers facing learning challenges, and enhance classroom engagement and learning beyond the classroom.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES 1. Faith, Mission, and Ethical Learning • Promote Values-Driven Learning: Encourage a school culture where academic pursuit is viewed as a way to develop individual talents for the service of others, in alignment with the John Paul College Mission. • Integrate Faith and Reason: Support the Deputy Principal Faith and Mission by embedding ethical reflections, gratitude, and mindfulness practices into student learning initiatives. • Champion Inclusive Education: Actively promote learning initiatives that cater to diverse learning styles, celebrating growth and effort alongside academic excellence. 2. Strategic Portfolio and Team Leadership • Be an active Student Leadership Team Member: Serve as a key member of the wider Student Leadership Team, ensuring academic and engagement goals are integrated into the school’s annual strategic plan. • Chair the Learning Sub-Committee: Convene and facilitate a dedicated student working group focused on generating academic initiatives, study groups, and learning feedback. • Collaborate Across Portfolios: Partner with Vice-Captains and House Leaders (students) to ensure learning initiatives are actively promoted and executed across all Houses and year levels.

3. Learning Advocacy and Peer Support • Drive Academic Student Voice: Act as the primary student liaison to the College’s academic staff, gathering and providing constructive feedback on issues such as but not limited to student learning needs, study spaces, and exam preparation resources. • Coordinate Peer Mentoring: Help establish and oversee student-led peer tutoring networks, study clubs, or homework help sessions, particularly supporting junior students during peak assessment periods. • Promote Learning Pathways: Collaborate with staff to raise awareness of diverse academic, vocational, and co-curricular learning pathways available at the College. 4. Academic Engagement and Communication • Lead Learning Initiatives: Plan and deliver whole-school academic events, such as Science Week activities, debating competitions, literacy challenges, or public speaking forums. • Promote Academic Success: Deliver regular updates, tips for effective study, and celebrations of student academic growth during School Assemblies and through College communication channels. • Liaise with Academic Staff: Maintain regular communication through scheduled meetings with the Learning and Engagement Leaders Deputy Principals and other relevant staff to review school-wide learning initiatives.

ENGAGEMENT LEADERS (TWO X YEAR 12 AND TWO X YEAR 11 STUDENTS) The Engagement Leaders hold specialised student leadership positions within John Paul College. Operating alongside the House Leaders and under the strategic direction of the College Captains and Vice-Captains, they are responsible for driving overall school spirit, community connection, and active student participation across all facets of college life. As Christ-centred leaders, they champion a welcoming and vibrant campus culture, ensuring that every student feels connected, valued, and motivated to contribute to the wider school community. The Engagement Leaders leads with high energy, inclusivity, and compassion, serving as a catalyst for positive school morale. They work collaboratively with the College Executive (students), staff, and the Student Leadership Team to design, promote, and execute co-curricular events, social initiatives, and community-building activities that bring the student body together.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES 1. Faith, Mission, and Inclusive Community • Promote Values-Driven Connection: Foster a school culture where social engagement, hospitality, and fellowship reflect the John Paul College Mission and Catholic values. • Champion Inclusivity: Ensure that all students, particularly those with diverse interests and backgrounds, are included within the programs and opportunities so that every student has the opportunity to excel. 2. Strategic Portfolio and Team Leadership • Be an active Student Leadership Team Member: Serve as a key member of the wider Student Leadership Team, ensuring communitybuilding and engagement goals are embedded in the school’s annual strategic plan. • Chair the Engagement Sub-Committee: Convene and facilitate a dedicated student working group focused on generating new and innovative ideas for lunchtime activities, school spirit initiatives, and social events. • Collaborate Across Portfolios: Partner with the Vice-Captains and House Leaders to ensure whole-school engagement initiatives are supported and executed efficiently and effectively.

3. Student Connection and Co-Curricular Advocacy • Drive Student Engagement and Voice: Act as a primary student liaison to staff regarding student life, gathering and presenting constructive feedback on student recreation spaces, cocurricular offerings, and club opportunities. • Promote Co-Curricular Pathways: Raise awareness and drive participation in the diverse non-academic opportunities available at the college, including lunchtime clubs, performing arts, chess, debating, and social justice groups. • Support Year Level Transitions: Collaborate with staff to design targeted connection activities that assist new students and Year 7 cohorts in integrating smoothly into the college community. 4. Event Execution and Campus Communication • Lead Campus Life Initiatives: Help plan, organize, and host whole-school engagement events, such as RUUOK? Day activities, live lunchtime music, trivia competitions, and lunchtime activities. • Promote Event Participation: Deliver highenergy updates, promote upcoming activities, and celebrate co-curricular successes during School Assemblies and through College communication channels. • Liaise with Engagement Staff: Maintain regular communication through scheduled planning meetings with the Deputy Principal Students and Engagement and relevant staff to ensure safe and successful event delivery.

YEAR LEVEL LEADERS Year Level Student Leaders hold foundational leadership positions within John Paul College. Operating at a cohort level, they serve as the vital link between their peers, the Year Level Coordinator, and the senior Student Leadership Team. As Christ-centred emerging leaders, their primary purpose is to build unity, pride, and active participation within their specific year level while living out the College Mission daily. Year Level Leaders lead with enthusiasm, approachability, and kindness, serving as positive role models in the classroom, pastoral groups, and yard. They work collaboratively with their Year Level Coordinator, homeroom teachers, and other student leaders to ensure every student in their cohort feels safe, included, and heard.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES 1. Faith, Mission, and Cohort Community • Model College Values: Visibly demonstrate the John Paul College Mission, school rules, and values within their daily peer interactions. • Lead Cohort Prayer: Assist homeroom teachers and the Year Level Coordinators in preparing and leading prayer or reflections during Year Level Assemblies and tutor periods. • Support Social Justice: Actively rally their peers to participate in House charity drives, wholeschool social justice campaigns, and community service initiatives. 2. Cohort Engagement and Year Level Spirit • Drive Year Level Unity: Help organize and promote positive cohort-specific activities (e.g., lunchtime games, homeroom competitions, or end-of-term celebrations) to build strong relationships across the year level. • Boost Participation: Encourage maximum peer involvement in school-wide events, including but not limited to performing and visual arts opportunities, inter-school and SIS cultural activities and SIS sporting activities. • Foster Inclusivity: Actively look out for isolated peers within the year level, ensuring a welcoming environment during recess and lunch. 3. Student Voice and Collaboration • Represent Peer Perspectives: Gather feedback, ideas, and concerns from their peers regarding school life, facilities, and activities. • Liaise with Senior Leaders: Meet periodically with the College Vice-Captains and Portfolio Leaders to share feedback and help execute whole-school initiatives. • Support House Leaders: Assist their respective House Leaders in distributing information and organizing logistics for House-specific activities.

4. Assistance and Cohort Communication • Support Year Level Assemblies: Assist staff in setting up, planning and hosting assemblies. • Welcome New Students: Act as a peer buddy to support new students entering the year level midyear, helping them navigate the campus and adjust to college life. • Liaise with Staff: Maintain open communication with their College Leaders and teaching staff to discuss cohort morale and upcoming events.

Leadership Camp at Camp Rumbug (attendance compulsory for Year 12 2027 student leaders).

Please note that students in Year 7 2027 will be appointed during Term 1 of 2027.
