Middle School Curriculum Guide
Welcome to the 2027 Middle School Curriculum Guide for Years 7 to 9. This guide is designed to support students and families in understanding the learning journey at John Paul College and to assist in making informed subject selections.
In the middle years, students are encouraged to explore a broad range of learning areas. This is a time to develop foundational knowledge, build essential skills, and begin identifying interests that will shape future pathways. Our curriculum fosters curiosity and critical thinking, while also supporting personal growth through the development of resilience, independence, and adaptability.
At John Paul College, our approach to learning is grounded in explicit instruction and informed by the MACS Vision for Instruction, ensuring that all students are engaged in purposeful, well-structured learning experiences. We emphasise clarity, high expectations, and strong teacher–student relationships to create safe and respectful learning environments.
Student agency is a key priority at our College. We aim to provide students with increasing ownership of their learning as they progress through the school. Subject selections made in the middle years lay the foundation for future decision-making and enable students to make more confident and informed choices in the senior years.
We encourage all students to engage fully with the opportunities available to them and to approach their learning with curiosity, optimism, and a willingness to grow. This is an exciting stage of schooling, and we look forward to supporting each student as they develop the skills and confidence to take the next step on their educational journey.

To initiate the subject preferences process, students will receive an email from noreply@selectmysubjects.com.au
This email will provide instructions on how to access the program for completing their subject preferences.
Detailed information regarding subjects can be found in the Curriculum Handbook. Additionally, all students will have the opportunity to discuss their subject preferences with their Pastoral Care teacher during an upcoming Horizons lesson.
It is mandatory for every student in Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 to complete their subject preferences, regardless of their chosen subjects or study stream.
For assistance during the process, students should contact their Pastoral Care teacher.

Investigation X is a hands-on, applied learning subject designed just for Year 9 students. You’ll choose a project that’s meaningful to you, something real and relevant that lets you explore your interests and make an impact.
Throughout the semester, you’ll dive into your chosen topic through activities like research, experiments, practical tasks, incursions, excursions, or presentations. In this subject, you will engage in a variety of individual and team sports such as badminton, golf, indoor hockey, ultimate frisbee, and touch football, each designed to enhance tactical awareness, skill proficiency, and strategic thinking.
The program promotes a broad development of movement skills and encourages lifelong physical activity.
You will also explore key health topics, including strategies to reduce risk-taking behaviours, the impact of alcohol, peer influence, and the importance of nutrition in supporting healthy development.
A highlight of the course is the Volleyball SEPEP unit, where you will take on roles such as player, coach, referee, and scorer, fostering leadership, responsibility, and collaboration.

Semester One: Discover what it means to belong to a Catholic community and our Liturgical Year, focusing on the Lent and Easter seasons. We will study Creation narratives and explore their role in explaining how we care for God’s Creation.
