PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Winter is the Season of Tech, Garage and Learning Events

Keep your eyes tuned to your weekly email blast and website for upcoming weekend adventures to the coast and northward.

The warm winter of 2026 definitely feels more like spring than our typical wet and grey season. Thanks to the mild and sunnier days of late, our drives have been filling to maximum capacity. While the drive season is starting off nicely here at ORPCA, winter is typically the season of tech, garage and learning events. This year is no different.

We kicked off the tech season with Ladies Lunch and Learn. The crew at Matrix patiently explained the importance of regular maintenance, what to watch for, and how to hear what your car is communicating. The next tech and learning session will be an EV Curious event at the end of March, open for registration now. Spring Clean is back on the books for mid-April and is another great opportunity for keeping your car in optimal driving condition.

While spring is not quite here, the organizing team and many committees are hard at work creating more events. Keep your eyes tuned to your weekly email blast and website for upcoming weekend adventures to the coast and northward.

When you attend events, please be sure to upload your best photos via the QR codes that now accompany the informational emails you get a day or so ahead of any event. The QR code takes you to a secure Dropbox for uploading photos. Rick Pittman, Club Photographer, then moves photos to the club’s SmugMug archive that lives on our website. Thank you, Rick, for maintaining our photo album!

You can reach me at president@ oregonpca.org to get involved or volunteer in any capacity. Let’s Drive! n

The Return of Porsche Club Racing to PIR: Why It Matters

On July 11 and 12, our Club is proud to support the return of Porsche Club Racing to Portland International Raceway (PIR) as part of the annual Rose Cup weekend.

One of the most exciting aspects of our Oregon Region is how our Porsche community continually evolves. We are a driving club, a social club, and a volunteer organization - and every so often, an opportunity comes along that allows us to be all three at once in a way that truly elevates our region. This July, we have one of those moments.

On July 11 and 12, our Club is proud to support the return of Porsche Club Racing to Portland International Raceway (PIR) as part of the annual Rose Cup weekend. This marks an important milestone for Oregon PCA, Friends of PIR (FOPIR), and the broader Porsche Club Racing community in the Pacific Northwest. We are excited to sponsor this return and help bring high-quality Porsche racing back to PIR.

Over the two-day event, we expect approximately 40 fully raceprepared Porsches to compete on PIR’s challenging 12-turn, 1.95mile circuit, ranging from 911s to

Spec Boxsters. This will be real, competitive Porsche Club Racingdrivers who have built, prepped and trained for this level of motorsport, bringing both skill and sportsmanship to the track. For many of our members, this will be an opportunity to see club-level racing up close, meet drivers and teams, and experience a different side of what PCA can offer beyond tours and social events.

This effort has been a true collaboration. We are working closely with FOPIR, whose leadership and commitment to motorsports at PIR have made this possible. FOPIR will run multiple race groups and themes over the Rose Cup weekend, and we anticipate some of our Club Racers may qualify in more than one race category— for example, a vintage 911 that qualifies as both a vintage car and within our Porsche Club Racing group. This layered, inclusive approach is part of what makes Rose Cup such a special weekend for racers and spectators alike.

On our Club’s behalf, I am representing the PCA Oregon Board in this sponsorship and coordination effort, and I am deeply grateful that our former Zone Representative, John Sommerwerck, has agreed to chair our Club’s involvement in the event. John brings both experience and credibility to this role, and his leadership is already making a difference in how smoothly this is coming together.

We have also been fortunate to work with national and regional leaders in Porsche Club Racing as we prepare for this return to PIR. In addition, one of our newer members, Greg Dino—who also serves as President of the Cascade Region—has stepped in with energy, experience, and connections to help recruit drivers and sponsors. This crossregion collaboration strengthens the entire PCA community, and we’re grateful for Greg’s willingness to lean in and help make this event a success.

None of this works without volunteers - and I want to thank the members who have already stepped up to help over the Rose Cup weekend. We will need people to support the drivers, their teams, and our own members who come out to enjoy the event. The good news is that many of these roles are simple, approachable, and genuinely fun. Some positions require little more than being present, attentive, and helpful—welcoming people, pointing them in the right direction, and

helping ensure everyone has a great experience. This is a wonderful way to get involved, meet racers and fellow members, and see behind the scenes of a major motorsports weekend at PIR.

Importantly, this event is not just about a single weekend. Both FOPIR and PCA share the goal of making Porsche Club Racing at PIR the annual tradition it once was. This July is our opportunity to set the tone -to show that our Club can support racing in a way that is professional, welcoming, and aligned with the spirit of PCA. If this weekend goes well, it opens the door to again making club racing a regular, visible part of our region’s identity.

Whether you are a longtime motorsports fan, a casual spectator, or someone who simply enjoys seeing what our Club can accomplish when we work together, I encourage you to come out to PIR on July 11 and 12. Volunteer if you can. Bring a friend. Cheer on the drivers. Introduce yourself to the teams. This is our club showing up for something bigger than any single drive or dinner - and that’s something worth celebrating.

As always, thank you for being part of what makes Oregon Region PCA such a strong, engaged, and evolving community. I look forward to seeing many of you trackside in July. Until then—enjoy the drive, and we’ll see you out on the road! You can always reach me at vicepresident@oregonpca.org. n

any of us, especially with older cars in the garage, like to tinker with them and do some or all of our own maintenance.

Changing air filters, oil filters, spark plugs, wiper blades, even a brake shoe or brake pad change if we’re ambitious. Sometimes we visit the local dealer to purchase OEM (factory-numbered) parts, but otherwise we might just as easily hit a local auto parts store, of which there are many, which sell OEM-spec aftermarket parts. That may be about to change.

You may have never heard about a business called First Brands Group, but it is a huge player in the automotive parts field. First Brands Group owns more familiar companies including Fram (filters), Autolite (spark plugs), Raybestos (brake pads and linings), highperformance brake manufacturer StopTech, Anco, Trico, and even Michelin (wiper blades) in this country. It recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy because it cannot pay its massive debts. It blames rising raw material and labor costs, inflation, and new tariffs on parts produced in other countries. Marelli Holdings, another major aftermarket parts supplier, also announced bankruptcy proceedings. That means consumer choice may soon be narrowing along with higher costs. Not just for your automobile, but also your light truck and SUV.

emerges: The company was acquired by Private Equity “investors” who sold off its assets and piled on new and unsustainable debt. Those who follow the business world have watched this literal piracy unfold before. It never ends well, except for the Private Equity investors.

Further investigation into the First Brands mess suggests that an ugly and growingly-familiar pattern

While we’re on the subject of auto parts, BMW seems to be taking a strange path when it comes to fasteners. There are many types of automotive fasteners, and nearly all have something in common: They can all be tightened or loosened with readily-available SAE or metric wrenches or sockets. Torx screws, with their recessed 6-point star-shaped pattern, hit the market in 1971, but Torx sockets and screwdrivers are also easy to obtain. Now we learn that BMW has applied for patents on a new screw head design mimicking its “roundel” emblem which requires a special tool available only to dealership technicians. Industry observers write that this may be an effort to discourage repairs by owners or independent shops. “By locking basic mechanical access behind hardware hurdles, BMW is drawing an even thicker line between owners and their cars,” AutoBlog says. “DIY jobs become harder, and independent workshops face yet another obstacle when servicing newer models. Something as simple as removing a seat could suddenly turn into a compulsory dealer visit.” If this ploy succeeds, we may again see other manufacturers adopt the same tactic.n

ZONE 6 UPDATE

Brad Pape, Zone 6 Representative

Easing into the New Zone 6 Rep Position

FAs I began my journey January first, I found out that easing into the position was not in the cards.

irst of all, I am proud and honored to be selected the Zone 6 Rep. Hopefully I can do as good a job as my predecessor John Sommerwerk. I think he and his wife Nancy did a wonderful job. Over the past couple of years we got to know them and have become great friends.

As I began my journey January first, I found out that easing into the position was not in the cards. The year started off with Kelly and I flying out to Fort Meyers to attend the National Staff Assembly. My head was completely full to overflowing with information fed to us from many of the national staff over two full days of meetings. On Saturday night we were all taken to The Revs Institute for a private tour of some of the rarest and most exotic of cars from the history of the automobile. It also houses the largest collection of Porsche race cars outside of the museum in Stuttgart.

After that, we returned to Phoenix, our snowbird home, and prepared

ourselves for the journey back to Canada. We left Phoenix January 31 and travelled to Las Vegas where we visited the Grand Prix experience centre located in the paddock club of the Las Vegas Grand Prix. It was a great display of historic items and experiences. I also had a go at the go cart track which was also great fun.

We departed Vegas and went up the Great Basin Highway which has to be the longest, straightest, loneliest highway on the planet. After reaching Boise, we had a great Italian dinner with Anthony Vera, and Vicki and Bob Pentecost from the Silver Sage Region. We arrived back in West Kelowna after an overnight stop at Moses Lake in Washington. The drive back was uneventful as the entire area has been experiencing unseasonably warm weather so, no snow anywhere. The rest of February looks pretty quiet although we may try to make a local event or two. Cheers for now, n

2026 Annual Meeting and Awards

At the end of January, Oregon Region kicked off the year as it have for many years, by enjoying a meal together at the Old Spaghetti Factory. This meal, as with so many before it, is the baseline of the Club’s Annual Meeting and Awards Presentation.

First off, the new Board of Directors was introduced. This year brings two new faces to the Board. We welcomed Wendy Wells as Director at Large, and Mark McGirr as Treasurer. Both Wendy and Mark bring tremendous skill and enthusiasm to the Board and the Club. Their experience in leadership and accountability are great assets to the club.

We also said farewell, but not goodbye, to two long-term members of the Board. Anh Le, Director at Large, stepped down at the end of 2025 to focus on family and work, while long-time Director at Large, and Past President Larry Hannan ended his term to allow more time for other aspects of retirement. Neither Anh or Larry will be far away from the club, and both will continue to serve ORPCA in a myriad of ways. Anh remains Anzeiger Editor as well as Chair of the Social Committee and a member of Community Outreach Committee. Larry is a key member of the Garage/Tech team and will continue to be a resource to the Board and Club going forward.

Next up was the Annual Meeting portion of the event. Officers Daniel Morris, Carole Hedstrom and Mark McGirr walked the group through a review of 2025, finances and what to expect in 2026.

With the work out of way, the evening moved to celebrate our many volunteers.

This Club runs on the energy and generosity of its member volunteers. As in past years, awards were presented to recognize those who made major contributions to our club in the last year. The recipients each received a plaque and had

their names added to the perpetual trophy of each category. One of the top awards is the Enthusiast of the Year Award. This year’s award was presented to two members, Warren Pease and Andrew Brewer. Warren and Andrew each participated in over 40 events in 2025 – truly enthusiastic!

Awards were also given for contributions to Club workings and organization including Gear of the Year, Family of the Year, President’s Award, Tourmeister of the Year, the Mark Donohue Award, New Member of the Year, Founders Award and occasionally a Special Award.

• Gear of the Year: ORPCA Tours Team – Jeff Gasparitsch, Jim Goetch, Brad Hedstrom, Heinz Holzapfel, Randi Ledbetter, Daniel Morris, Dan Wilson and David Zygmont

• Family of the Year – John and Rosanne Woody

• Tourmeister of the Year – Fred Holzheiser

• Mark Donohue Award – Jeannine Downey

• President’s Award – Scott Dual

• Special Award – Carlos Santayana

• New Member of the Year – Wendy Wells

• Dick Steif, First ORPCA President, Founders Award – David Zygmont

Volunteering makes this Club what it is, and every volunteer with their time and skills enhance the group and events. Even though not all volunteers were recognized at the awards dinner, their work and contributions are none the less absolutely important. Thank you to everyone who volunteers time in ORPCA. The Social Committee works tirelessly to bring us the monthly dinners, including the annual awards dinner. The Community Outreach Committee works to make contributions to charity organizations and events; the Autocross Team turns out a world-class autocross circuit; while the Northwest Passage and Scenic Oregon Committees continue to deliver high level multiday tours; the Nominating Committee is continually interacting with members and vetting them for potential leadership capabilities; the Web Team maintains the pulse of activity for the entire Club; and the Social Media and Communications Group keep us all informed and entertained.

This new year is well underway, and we have already hosted more than a dozen events and drives in 2026. There is so much more to come and many more opportunities to join us a volunteer. Step up, lean in! Your Club needs you. Your volunteer contributions will not go unrecognized. n

First Drive of the Year

January 10, 2026

The first drive of the year looked like a simple route to the coast but turned out to be quite fun with built-in loops off the highways and a ferry ride that accommodated the dozen of our cars. We started in Scappoose to drive west along the Columbia, crossing in Longview over to the north side and then heading along the Columbia to Cathlamet where we took the ferry to Westport. Highways 30 and 4 never disappoint because they are twisty and scenic, and the day was dry with sun breaks.

The group ended for lunch in Astoria at Bridgewater Bistro, which always delights us with great food in an architecturally bright and spacious setting.

I continued my adventure going south and visiting friends in Cannon Beach to enjoy some beach time and lots of elk, only to discover that Hwy 26

was closed just east of 101. The best route home was south through Nehalem and up Hwy 53, (yes, THAT road) which connects to 26 at the bottom of David Douglas Hill. I really got a day full of twisty turns.

We have several drives coming up in the year, so please come DRIVE! n

January Midweek Drive:

January 14, 2026

Our first midweek was a 110-mile drive with 13 cars that started at the Oregon Trail Visitors Center. It went East then South along the Clackamas River to Silver Falls for a stop, then back North to Lou’s Kitchen in Mt. Angel.

This drive by far had the most challenging weather in VERY chilly conditions. We started in fog and ended in very dense fog. The average temperature was 37°! We encountered numerous frost (full white) sections of road and every one of us had a zero-grip moment, which was briefly exciting! Making it even more interesting was the intermittent sunny sections with completely dry surfaces and over the next hill there was icy frost in the shade (yikes!). We can report that all 13 cars finished.

The rolling hills of green farmland (when we could see it) were spectacular. We had fun with the many twisties and the elevation changes. The yellow 911 from our friends at Matrix participated (thanks Bryan), and yes, this author did put the top down on the last section in the dense fog at 37°!

Thank you to all that came and Fred and I appreciate you! n

Cruisin’ On a Sunday: West Linn to Helvetia Tavern

Our inaugural 2026 Sunday Cruise on January 18th lived up to its promise right from the start—relaxed, social, and perfectly paced. With sunshine and clear skies greeting the group in West Linn, it was hard not to appreciate just how fortunate we are; with weather this ideal, it’s no wonder club drives have become a year-round activity. The strong turnout for a January drive spoke volumes, as the group set off at lower elevations for an easy, unhurried route that gently unwound toward Dayton, allowing those engines and motors to stretch their legs.

The lineup itself reflected both continuity and fresh enthusiasm within the Club. Bruce Jones turned heads with his new 992.2-generation 911, a standout debut on a Sunday cruise. New members Paul and Natalie Wilson joined in style with their silver Cayman S, quickly finding their stride among familiar faces. Amit Bhowmik marked his first official club drive at the wheel of his 911, while George Reynolds continued his growing ORPCA journey, participating in his second drive in his Panamera. Adding a bit of flair to the morning was the

debut of the ORPCA logo beanie, proudly sported by our fearless leader, Carole.

As the miles rolled by, the drive delivered a series of cruise-worthy moments. Group 2 briefly “adopted” a pack of motorcyclists riding just ahead, forming an impromptu mixed convoy that felt pulled straight from a road-trip postcard. Sweeping vistas opened to reveal a snowcapped Mount Hood under a crystal-clear sky, while the scenery transitioned into the patchwork greens and golds of Tualatin Valley farm country—quiet roads, wide views, and the unmistakable sense of Oregon stretching out around us.

Part two carried the group west through Forest Grove and into portions of Hillsboro’s Silicon Forest before the final approach led us to Helvetia Tavern. Lunch was filled with laughs, stories, and that unmistakable post-drive glow that only a wellexecuted Sunday cruise can deliver. If this relaxed and scenic outing was any indication, 2026 is already off to a beautifully driven start.n

Our leader, Bob Ellis, created a route typical for his reputation, for the largest number of turns per mile.

First SUV Drive of 2026 January 24, 2026

We had gorgeous weather and a large attendance for the first SUV of 2026.

Our leader, Bob Ellis, created a route typical for his reputation, for the largest number of turns per mile. It was a Washington State drive that began from the Hazel Dell Safeway, and drove north through Ridgefield, then crossed I -5 by the Ilani Casino.

There are so many new homes in Ridgefield, and many are on small acreages. Then we were in farm country passing beautifully maintained homes on big properties where we visited the Zylstra Farm Carvings. We entered more forested areas and drove past the Historic Grist Mill and Covered Bridge near Yacolt and Amboy to Fargher Pond Restaurant for lunch.

Great first SUV of the year. n

Ladies Lunch and Learn

January 31, 2026

On a recent sunny Saturday, sixteen ORPCA lady members gathered at the downtown location of Matrix, one of our Club sponsors, for a tech session. We introduced ourselves and were reacquainted with longer term members, while welcoming newer members. Our intrepid Club President, Carole Hedstrom, presented the Gear Head award to Randi Ledbetter. She received a plaque and one of the new ORPCA beanies. Brittany Danielle, Matrix Service Advisor extraordinaire, educated us about warnings our cars may show us on our dashboards, what to do in the case of unusual noises, items we should carry to be prepared for an emergency, how and where to top off basic fluids, and much more.

Justin Williams, a Matrix owner, chimed in and taught us about brakes, what the underside of Porsches looks like, and how to determine if our tires have issues. One of the most interesting, and surprising, things

Cristy Johnson and Carole Hedstrom.

we learned was that our tires have a date code on them and may, in fact, be several years old when we purchase them.

Attendees added helpful tips and shared anecdotes, we benefited from everyone participating.

Gaining all that knowledge made us hungry, so we reconvened at the Chart House on Terwilliger. Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens were visible in all their glory, and we admired the view of the river. The vittles and service were excellent. Lively conversation and laughter ensued.

Thank you Brittany and Matrix.

The tech session was an example of one of the many kinds of activities offered by our ORPCA chapter, and a benefit of membership. We were fortunate to learn a lot and have fun in the process. Many thanks to Matrix for sponsoring it! n

ORPCA Social Media Class

AND

After more than a week of unusually warm and dry weather during which some of us managed to cleanse our cars of winter grime, wouldn’t you know it: On Saturday February 7 the skies turned grey and rainy, rather typical for Portland. A perfect day for some Social Media instruction, taught by our Social Media Maven, Jeannine Downey.

Over the past couple of years Jeannine has significantly increased the Club’s social media presence which has resulted in attracting new members and new sponsors. She offered the class to encourage other members to contribute to the Club’s visibility. The class was a nice mix of brief presentation and hands-on practice. The focus was on how to make engaging posts (reels) on Instagram and TikTok. Jeannine presented a few basics like adding a caption, using hashtags and inviting collaborators, as well as some DON’T’s specific to ORPCA related posts like 1), no pictures from the driver’s seat, 2) no pictures showing speeding or breaking any laws, and 3) no photos of children without permission. She also handed out the ORPCA Social Media Policy Guidelines.

Jeannine shared some best practices for capturing photos and videos suitable for posting the primary ones being 1) use portrait orientation and 2) use Live Photos (Apple) or Motion Photos (Android).

The dozen or so attendees then went out into the parking lot for the “field work” portion of the class where each person captured several photos and videos of the collection of rainsoaked Porsches in the parking lot.

Then, we returned to the classroom where Jeannine walked everyone through how to create a reel in TikTok, how to annotate it, and how to also share it on Instagram. Then everyone created their own posts, included the common tags {#porsche #porsche911 #porscheclub #oregonpca #pca}. She also explained and showed that by adding @ oregonpca as a collaborator, she can then repost from the Club’s social media account.

You can view the Club’s activities by following @oregonpca on Instagram or @oregon.pca on TikTok. If you are active on either, you can tag the Club or invite us to collaborate. n
