W e survived another brutal Arizona summer! This year, we were lucky to have unusually mild winter, spring, and even summer weather compared with the 28 years I’ve lived here. Sure, we had a stretch of 100°-plus days and some severe monsoons, but nothing we tough Arizonans can’t handle.

Now that it is cooling off (yes, the 90s are a cool-down), it’s time to enjoy outdoor parties and festivals. What better way to kick off festival season than with the annual Latino Pride Festival on October 3.

The Phoenix Latino Pride Festival celebrates the vibrant intersection of Latino culture and LGBTQ+ pride, bringing the community together for music, entertainment, food, art and cultural expression. Its roots trace to the Latino Pride Alliance, founded in Phoenix in 2017 to advocate for Latino LGBTQ+ youth, adults and families and promote acceptance, equality and community engagement. Over the years, the festival has grown into Arizona’s largest gathering celebrating Latino LGBTQ+ pride. Held at historic Heritage Square in downtown Phoenix, the annual event provides a welcoming space where generations can celebrate their heritage, embrace their identities and proudly stand together. PHX ATTRACTIONS OVERTIME

Clock out, gear up, and get ready to go OVERTIME on Saturday, September 5, from 10 PM–3 AM in Phoenix’s Melrose District. This 21+ Labor Day Weekend party celebrates blue-collar fantasy, gay nightlife, music, and everything that happens after the shift ends. Broadway gets fabulously messy when The Prom takes over Arizona Broadway Theatre (7701 W Paradise Ln, Peoria) August 21–September 13. Four fading Broadway stars descend on a small town after hearing about a high school prom controversy, hoping to save the day—and maybe their careers along the way. What follows is big laughs, bigger musical numbers, and a heartfelt celebration of being exactly who you are. Dancing for one·n·ten

Community leaders are trading boardrooms for the ballroom at the 17th Annual Dancing for one·n·ten on Saturday, September 12, from 12–2 PM at the Tempe Center for the Arts (700 W Rio Salado Pkwy, Tempe, AZ 85281). Nine Valley leaders will take the stage, showing off their moves, their heart, and possibly a few dancefloor surprises as they compete for the title of Grand Champion. Horse Meat Disco

Disco darlings, this one’s for you. Horse Meat Disco rides into Phoenix on Friday, September 18, from 9 PM–2 AM at Walter Studios (747 W Roosevelt St, Phoenix). The legendary dance party brings its signature blend of disco, house, funk, and pure queer nightlife energy for one gloriously sweaty night on the dance floor, with DJ-B also keeping the party moving. Bartlett Bash

Pack the tent, the sunscreen, and your tiniest practical swimwear, Bartlett Bash returns for its fall edition on the third weekend of September at Bartlett Flats on Bartlett Lake. This long-running LGBTQ+ camping tradition trades the bar scene for boats, jet skis, floating tubes, hiking, fishing, theme camps, and whatever other lakeside mischief you can responsibly dream up. Everyone is welcome, but come prepared: this is actual camping, Darling, not glamping with room service. Latino Pride Festival

Celebrate culture, community, and plenty of orgullo at the 6th Annual Phoenix Latino Pride Festival on Saturday, October 3, at Heritage Square (113 N 6th St, Phoenix). Doors open at 5 PM for Arizona’s largest gathering of Latino LGBTQ+ community members, bringing Downtown Phoenix together for a night of pride, music, entertainment, and unapologetic celebration. Acts are still to be announced, so stay tuned. lear your Saturday night, find the outfit that says “community icon with excellent lighting,” and prepare to bring your full, fabulous self downtown. The sixth annual Phoenix Latino Pride Festival returns Saturday, October 3, 2026, transforming historic Heritage Square into a joyful celebration of Latino LGBTQ+ culture, connection, and unapologetic orgullo. Presented by the Latino Pride Alliance, the festival is billed as Arizona’s largest gathering of Latino LGBTQ+ people and this party comes with a purpose. Founded in 2017, LPA is a volunteer-led nonprofit serving Latina/o lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, with special attention to Spanish-speaking families. Its mission centers on liberty, equality, and justice, while its work helps families support LGBTQ+ children, promotes their well-being, and develops young leaders who can create safer homes, schools, and communities. In other words: the organization brings the glitter, but it also does the homework. So, what is waiting beyond the gates? Expect an evening packed with live music, highenergy drag, dance shows, a beauty pageant, and food vendors ready to keep the fiesta fueled. The artist and special-guest lineup has not yet been announced yes, she is 26

keeping us in suspense, but LPA promises acts and entertainment, and attendees can follow the festival’s official page for the big reveal. That mystery is not a reason to wait; it is a reason to secure your spot before everybody suddenly “discovers” the event at once. The festival takes place at Heritage Square, 113 N. Sixth Street in downtown Phoenix. Eventbrite lists the celebration from 4 p.m. to 11:59 p.m., while LPA’s event page says doors open at 5 p.m., so give the official ticket listing one last glance before heading out. Presale admission is $20 through October 1, general admission is $30, and a $125 VIP ticket includes festival entry, VIP seating, three drink tickets, and a meet-and-greet. The event is listed as all ages, making this an intergenerational invitation to dance, cheer, eat, and be seen. And being seen matters. Latino LGBTQ+ people often navigate more than one set of expectations at once, cultural, linguistic, familial, and political. A festival created by and for this community offers something beautifully direct: a place where nobody has to choose between identities. Culture and queerness do not compete here; they salsa together. SEPT 2026

Supporting local Pride events also keeps resources close to home. Buying a ticket, volunteering, donating, or sharing the event strengthens the volunteers, youth programs, family education, vendors, performers, and community networks doing year-round work in Arizona. National campaigns may dominate the feed, but local organizations are the ones answering nearby needs, building trust in two languages, and creating the spaces where a young person can see a future that looks like them. Come for the music, drag, pageant drama, dancing, and snacks. Stay because joy can be civic participation, and because Heritage Square has rarely looked better than it does in rainbow colors. Gently fold the crab meat with the mayonnaise, chipotle puree, lime juice, and half of the lime zest. Chill the mixture for 20 minutes. Spoon a scoop of the crab dip into the wide end of each crisp endive leaf. Garnish with the remaining lime zest and a pinch of red pepper flakes.

A moody, vibrant drink that mirrors a deep desert sunset.

1 bottle crisp Chardonnay (chilled) 1 cup pure pomegranate juice 1 blood orange and 1 lime (sliced into wheels) 1/4 cup fresh pomegranate seeds

HOW-TO:

Pour the chilled white wine and pomegranate juice into a pitcher. Drop in the sliced blood oranges, limes, and pomegranate seeds. Give it a gentle stir and let the flavors mingle for 15 minutes. Pour over ice into wide crystal glasses, finishing with a sprig of fresh mint.

A New Chapter in HIV Care: Meet CAN Community Health’s Maria Jefferson Walker Sometimes a new chapter begins with a step into a new community. For Maria Jefferson Walker, that step came after 14 years as a healthcare provider, when an unexpected opportunity introduced her to HIV medicine. Walker saw the opportunity as a chance to learn and expand her clinical experience. “At a time when I was exploring new career opportunities, I was contacted regarding a new position at an infectious disease clinic focused on HIV care,” said Walker. “I had not previously worked with patients living with HIV, and I viewed this opportunity as a chance to expand my clinical expertise and continue growing professionally.”

HEALTHY NATION

What began as a three-month assignment became the beginning of a new era of clinical practice for Walker. Today, she brings that experience to CAN Community Health as a new provider in Phoenix, where she is continuing her journey in HIV care while getting to know the diverse community she serves. “My first day was filled with a mix of excitement and uncertainty,” she said. “However, the welcoming and inclusive environment immediately made a positive impression on me.” That welcoming environment is especially important in a state where thousands of people are living with HIV. The CDC estimates that 22,300 people in the state are living with HIV in 2025, underscoring the continued need for accessible HIV prevention, testing, and treatment services. That need is particularly relevant in the Phoenix area. Maricopa County reported 635 new HIV cases in 2024, an increase from 474 cases in 2020. These numbers highlight the importance of having healthcare providers like Walker meet patients where they are; a task Walker says she’s ready for. “I’m excited to step out of my comfort zone, embrace a new challenge, and deepen my understanding of a specialized area of healthcare.” At CAN Community Health’s Phoenix health center, patients can access comprehensive services for HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and

hepatitis C, including free screenings. CAN also provides HIV treatment and prevention services designed to make care available for communities without barriers. By bringing multiple services together, the health center provides patients with a place where they can address their sexual health and HIV care needs in one setting. For those seeking HIV prevention outside of a traditional clinic setting, CAN’s Online PrEP program provides another way to access PrEP. Through Online PrEP, eligible patients can connect with care remotely, with options that include at-home testing and medication delivery. The campaign approach emphasizes that PrEP is an HIV prevention tool for everybody; all genders, sexual orientations, and identities. Walker stresses the need to make patients feel comfortable and respected is an important part of providing quality care. “Seeing such a vibrant and affirming space reinforces the importance of creating healthcare environments where patients feel comfortable, respected, and valued,” Walker said. She is also looking forward to building meaningful relationships with patients and communities she serves while continuing to develop her cultural humility and competence. That process includes remaining open to learning from the people and communities she encounters while providing care that recognizes each patient’s individual needs and experiences. Her approach to healthcare is also shaped by a commitment to service that goes beyond the exam room. Outside of her clinical work, Walker enjoys traveling with her husband and spending quality time with family and friends, who are an important part of her life. “I’m also deeply committed to community service through a nonprofit organization established in honor of my son who passed away in 2022,” said Walker. “Through our annual ‘Be a Walker for a Day 5K’ event in Chicago, we raise funds to support student tuition and help create educational opportunities for young people.” That commitment to community service reflects another important part of Walker’s perspective as a healthcare provider. She sees service as an opportunity to make a lasting difference in the lives of others through direct patient work and education. Walker’s arrival adds another experienced provider to CAN’s efforts to make HIV care, prevention, testing, and other sexual health services accessible to the Phoenix community. One simple philosophy from Maya Angelou guides Walker throughout both her professional and personal life. “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel,” she quotes. Tempe, Prepare to Twirl: Dan

C

lear the dance floor and secure the sequins: one·n·ten’s most fabulous fundraiser is ready for another spin. The 17th annual Dancing for one·n·ten sashays into Tempe Center for the Arts on Saturday, September 12, bringing an afternoon of original routines, community spirit and the kind of joyful drama that only a ballroom-style competition can deliver. This year, nine local community leaders will trade their usual professional footing for choreography, partnering with professional dance instructors to create and perform routines of their own. Will there be nerves? Almost certainly. Will there be commitment, sparkle and at least one heroic recovery? We can dream. Doors open at 10 a.m., with performances beginning at noon. The 2026 theme is “Unapologetically Me,” a fitting reminder that taking up space is not merely allowed—it deserves good lighting and an enthusiastic audience. Behind the celebration is one·n·ten’s serious commitment to helping LGBTQ+ youth and young adults live authentically, build confidence, develop leadership skills and know they belong exactly as they are. Guiding the festivities will be the Legendary Barbra Seville, a local entertainer with 25

years of experience and a former Dancing for one·n·ten contestant. In other words, she knows the stage, understands the pressure and will undoubtedly keep the afternoon moving with wit, warmth and impeccably timed encouragement. Every dip, turn and dramatic finish also raises money for one·n·ten’s work across Arizona. Last year’s event generated more than $174,000, and this year’s proceeds will support identity-specific programs for BIPOC and transgender, gender-nonconforming and gender-expansive youth, along with housing assistance, workforce development, wellness resources, digital programming and Camp OUTdoors. Founded by volunteers in 1993, one·n·ten now serves young people through its Downtown Phoenix Youth Center, statewide satellite sites, outdoor adventures, housing and workforce initiatives, and community partnerships. That makes attending more than a very entertaining Saturday plan. Buying a ticket or supporting a dancer helps create affirming spaces where LGBTQ+ young people can connect, grow and envision futures in which they thrive. Tickets are available through Tempe Center for the Arts. Come for the choreography, cheer loudly for the courageous competitors and remember: when a community shows up for its young people, everybody gets a reason to dance. SEPT 2026
