Always a Bridesmaid, Never a Bride

If I could turn back time…

Iam an eternal optimist, but I’m also a realist—and sometimes those concepts conflict.

WION JUST JACK

We’ve been told all our lives that the holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year. As a kid, it was! No school, tons of delicious food, family, friends and unexpected moments of kindness. Fast forward to our adulthood, we work through the holidays, still enjoy food, see some of our family and friends-- but thanks to instant delivery and shopping on demand, some of the holiday magic of ‘giving’ has lost its spark.

hen I was coming out in my 20’s, there were things which I loved. I listened to Elton John and Cher on a CD player, I played Atari video games at arcades, and I wore colorfully short shorts— I was the quintessential 80’s kid. I grew up in a traditional midwest suburban household with siblings and loving parents. I’m the youngest of six, so I got to watch my brothers and sisters mature, make mistakes and act out their lives. I watched and learned. Later on, I attended all my bother’s and sister’s weddings. But back then, I couldn’t legally get married so I didn’t even think it was an option for me.

If you’re looking to reignite unique and thoughtful gift-giving, this month our beautiful queen Wilma Carstart from Stacy’s at Melrose showcases some of the hottest gift ideas for the person that has everything. Check it out on page 24.

I have attended many weddings. I’ve been a groomsmen for three weddings, and a best man for four others. Now, fast forward 30 years— it’s my turn. On April 18th, I will make the plunge and marry the greatest man I’ve ever met. Honestly, I was ready to be single the rest of my life. I had made peace with that. But then I met Lucas, and the rest was history. I will be a married man and a happy husband the next time I write this article.

So will this holiday season be the most wonderful time of the year for you? In these rapidly changing times, sometimes it’s hard to ensure our happiness in the face of the unknown. Financial insecurity, federal budget cuts, global warming — it’s a lot. Are you optimistic about the future?

Truth be told, I think we live in one of the best places in the country — and I’ve loved watching Arizona grow and flourish. Sure, we have problems, but look around and see what other states are facing right now. Our challenges here in Arizona are minuscule by comparison to some of the insurmountable challenges ahead of other states.

So… as we enter the most capitalistic and chaotic season of the year, how will you celebrate? Will you go out with friends and family? Attend dinner parties and events? Indulge in shopping and gluttony? I definitely know I will.

All of this new freedom and excitement circles back to my memories and experiences of the 80’s. While I closeted, I already knew I was different. I needed a change of scenery to explore my identity, so I moved to Arizona— and from there I never looked back. While I missed Elton John’s final concert last year, I did see all three of the “Final Farewell” Cher tours. Their songs resonated with me. So in the spirit of that nostalgia, we’re celebrating my new life as a married man by going to “Rocket Man” at Celebrity Theatre and “The Cher Show” at Arizona Broadway Theatre. I hope you can all join us and celebrate!

Thank you for being there for the last 24 holiday seasons, and for supporting our growing community at ION Arizona. My best gift from all of you is that you keep reading, supporting your community, playing safe, getting tested and being good to each other.

So as I enter this new chapter in my life, I still listen to Elton John, Cher, play video games and, thank God, short shorts are back! Be good to each other, play safe, get tested and enjoy life. I’m still standing after all these years!

Happy holidays from all of us at ION Arizona, and to all a good month! I’ll see you in 2026!

How Three Actors and a Bold Design Team Create Cher on Stage

Cher has been a musical, fashion and cultural icon for more than six decades. In the regional premiere of “The Cher Show,” on stage at Arizona Broadway Theatre from May 1 to 31, 2026, the musical takes audiences on a spectacular journey through her life and career spanning 60 years and counting.

This electrifying musical chronicles Cher’s journey from humble beginnings to global superstar through a combination of determination, reinvention and survival. From folkpop beginnings in the 1960s to disco domination, Oscar-winning acting and dance-floor comebacks, Cher has stayed relevant. And, with over 100 million records sold, 12 top 10 hits, a Grammy Award, three Golden Globe Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a best-selling memoir, it seems like there is nothing she can’t do.

Three Faces of a Pop Icon

What makes “The Cher Show” unique is its trio of leading ladies. Three performers share the role, each embodying a different era of Cher’s life. From the wide-eyed dreamer just starting out, to the fierce pop superstar breaking boundaries and the confident legend, they create a layered and dynamic portrait that captures Cher ’s evolution.

Arizona Broadway Theatre’s cast includes Dani Kucera, who plays “Babe,” the youngest version of Cher in the 1950s and 1960s. This character represents Cher’s years in school, the beginnings of her career and the start of her personal and professional relationship with Sonny Bono.

“One of the things I am most excited about with this role is the score,” Kucera said. “I have always admired Cher’s music and how timeless it is. I love that the show encapsulates so many different eras of her music with 35 of her hits. My favorite Cher song is “Dark Lady.” It is so catchy and fierce.”

Arizona Broadway Theatre favorite and Anthem, Arizona resident, Lynzee Foreman, portrays the “Lady” version of Cher. This era spans the 1970s, when Cher was in her mid-to-late 20s.

“Preparing to represent Cher has been a labor of love, honestly,” said Foreman. “She is truly timeless. You can ask anyone of any age who Cher is, and they know her and her work. I have been deep into research, watching old interviews and performances to learn about her mannerisms, sound and how she carries herself. It has been a real joy to get to know her in that way.”

Gabrielle Gore’s “Star” represents Cher at the height of her fame and artistic power in the 1980s and 1990s. For Gore, working with two other actresses to embody the role was inspiring.

“The biggest advantage to working with Dani and Lynzee is that it allows us to each explore Cher’s life in a really dynamic way,” said Gore. “Instead of one actor trying to portray decades of change, the three of us embody a different chapter of Cher’s growth. The challenge is making sure the character still feels like one person, so the audience sees the throughline of Cher’s personality, strength and humor from beginning to end.”

Costumes Fit for a Fashion Icon

“The Cher Show” delivers a theatrical experience that’s as bold and dazzling as the icon herself, but that doesn’t stop with the music and performance. The costume department at Arizona Broadway Theatre also had its work cut out for them with this production. Morgan Andersen, Costume Director, and her four-person team were tasked with curating and recreating Cher’s iconic looks, which is no small feat.

“Currently, there is only one set of traveling costumes available for this show, and unfortunately, they are being used in another city,” said Andersen. “That means we have to create all the looks from top to bottom and everything in between. It’s a big undertaking, but we are up for the challenge!”

Cher’s style has been characterized by its fashion-forward boldness and creativity. It’s big, over-the-top and recognizable all over the world. For the Arizona Broadway Theatre costume department, this will be the largest and most costly costume design project to date.

“This show is very costume-driven with an enormous number of quick changes backstage, as many as six in a 10-minute span,” said Andersen. “This provides a unique set of challenges when it comes to designing costumes. We may use Velcro or magnets instead of buttons or zippers and build multi-layered pieces. The changes are fast, but that’s part of what makes this show exciting and very entertaining.”

If you want to see Cher’s music and style evolution on stage and watch her extraordinary life unfold, get tickets to “The Cher Show” now at www.azbroadway.org

HED: An Arizona Bill Could Restrict Uploading Satirical Content of Politicians.

This story was originally published by LOOKOUT. It has been condensed for this publication. Sign up for LOOKOUT’s newsletter at lookoutnews.org

A bill with bipartisan support could give Arizona politicians broad control over how people post adult content online, and Gov. Katie Hobbs’ office has quietly contacted lobbyists about it, which they said signals an interest in signing the measure.

HB2133, which passed out of the house with a supermajority vote, would require anyone who uploads adult content — whether real, illustrated, or AI-generated — to obtain consent from every person depicted.

Its sponsor, Rep. Nick Kupper (R-Surprise) frames the legislation as a measure to combat revenge porn and child sexual abuse material. But lawmakers, civil liberties advocates, and technology experts warn the law’s broad language would sweep in streaming platforms, social media services, and ordinary users, potentially censoring legal speech.

Despite those warnings, insiders say Hobbs’ office has contacted lobbyists to get the bill in shape to go to her desk. A spokesperson for the governor, Christian Slater, disputed that characterization:

“Your sources are wrong,” he said. “The governor hasn’t taken a position internally or otherwise. As the governor’s office does with any piece of legislation, we are engaging stakeholders and legislators on HB2133.”

But two local lobbyists who spoke with LOOKOUT said the Hobbs administration has in the past only reached out when there is intent to sign a bill. Hobbs has been staunch in her support of signing bipartisan legislation, which this measure has, with a supermajority vote in favor in the House. Slater would not comment further on Hobbs’ intentions regarding the bill.

If the bill passes and is signed, lawmakers in opposition said it could have wide-ranging consequences for major streaming platforms, potentially sparking costly court battles.

“This isn’t just about adult content websites,” said Sen. Analise Ortiz (D-Phoenix). “Any TV show or movie with a PG-13 or R rating will have to think about this.”

In a Senate committee hearing debating the bill, Ortiz asked if even a satirical clip — such as a South Park scene depicting President Donald Trump and Satan having sex — could be considered a violation, forcing users or platforms to secure consent from public figures or risk legal action.

Kupper responded that the bill would require users to get Trump’s consent before posting. Technology and civil liberties experts said that admission is a bright red flag.

Kate Ruane, director of the Center for Democracy and Technology’s Free Expression Project, said the bill’s definition of “synthetic” content — any visual depiction altered or created using AI or digital technology — is vague and could encompass parody, satire, or public-interest citizen reporting.

“That introduces a whole new host of issues that will create a gigantic burden for speech that is happening on a lot of very big platforms that allow sexual content,” Ruane said, referencing websites such as Reddit, BlueSky, and X. “It will be up to the whims of political actors to determine what content is covered by sexual content that is harmful to minors.”

Spring Reset: Clear the Clutter, Build the Body

pring is a season of renewal. We clean our homes, open the windows, and let fresh air in. But what if this year, you also cleaned up your habits?

Most people try to change everything overnight. They go from zero workouts to five days a week, strict diets, and unrealistic expectations. Two weeks later, they burn out. Not because they failed, but because the plan was not built for real life.

At Rafalogie Fit, we take a different approach. Start with three days a week. Not perfect. Not extreme. Just consistent.

Here is a simple structure:

Day 1: Chest, Shoulders, Triceps Incline chest press machine, pec deck, shoulder press, dumbbell laterals, dumbbell front raise, dips, tricep cable extension

Day 2: Back, Biceps, Hamstrings

High row, seated row, lat pull down, bent over lateral, barbell curl, concentration curl, leg curls, straight leg deadlift

Day 3: Quads, Calves, Core Leg press, leg extensions, walking lunges, seated calf raises, back extension, incline sit ups, hanging leg raises

Perform 3 sets of each exercise for about 20 reps. Rest 45 seconds to 1 minute between sets and 1 minute to 1 minute and 30 seconds between exercises. Keep the pace intentional. Focus on control, not just speed.

8 Week Program Before & After

This is not just about the workout. It is about creating rhythm.

As a life coach, I ask my clients: What in your life feels cluttered right now?

What habits are no longer serving you?

Spring is your chance to reset. Not by becoming someone new, but by returning to what matters. Movement. Energy. Self respect.

When you commit to three days a week, you are building more than muscle. You are building trust with yourself. You are proving that you can show up, even when life

is busy. And that confidence carries into everything else.

At Rafalogie Fit, we combine structured workouts like this with life coaching tools to help you align your habits, mindset, and goals.

Ready for your Spring reset? Book your free discovery call at rafalogiefit.com and let’s build a plan that fits your life.

Euphoria

– Season 3 (HBO – Returns this April)

It’s been 84 years… but Euphoria is finally back, and babes, it sounds absolutely unhinged—in the best way. With a five-year time jump, our chaotic faves are out of high school and into even messier adulthood (love that for them). Rue is apparently in Mexico, in debt, and making some questionable life choices. So, business as usual. Between Sydney Sweeney teasing chaos and Jacob Elordi promising something “clever,” expect heartbreak, hookups, and high-gloss trauma. Glitter tears are back. Hide your feelings.

ION STREAMING

The Boys

– Season 5 (Final Season) (Prime Video – Explodes April 8)

Hide your supersuits and clutch your pearls, The Boys is back for its final, blood-soaked bow, and it’s giving end-of-the-world realness. Homelander is fully unhinged (so… same), the gang is locked up in a shady “Freedom Camp,” and poor Annie is out here trying to lead a resistance like it’s The Hunger Games: Supe Edition. Oh, and Butcher ’s back with a virus that could wipe out every Supe. Casual! It’s messy, violent, and morally chaotic. Basically? The perfect finale.

Big Mistakes

(Netflix – Screws up April 9)

Crime has never looked this incompetent, and honestly, we’re obsessed. Big Mistakes follows two wildly unqualified siblings who get blackmailed into working for gangsters and proceed to absolutely fumble their way through the underworld. Think chaos, bad decisions, and “how are they still alive?” energy every five minutes. It’s giving sibling rivalry meets accidental criminals with zero survival instincts. If you like your crime stories messy, dumb, and hilariously off the rails, this one’s a certified hot mess worth bingeing.

EUPHORIA

Edge of the World: Arizona’s Wild Cliffside Escape

About the Author

Peter Michelsen is an adventurer who spends much of his free time exploring Arizona’s canyons, forests, and trails. His memoir, The Boy Who Walked Himself Home, tells the story of his own path through hardship and healing. Available on Amazon and Apple Books.

Awinter snowfall in Sedona is one of the most beautiful and most overlooked travel moments in the Southwest. While many people associate Sedona with warm desert hikes and summer sunsets, those who time a visit with a winter storm get to see an entirely different landscape emerge.

Sedona sits about two hours north of Phoenix by car, making it an easy and worthwhile day trip when snow is in the forecast. I like to watch the weather closely and head up either the day of the storm or early the following morning. That timing is key. When the snow is fresh and the clouds begin to clear, sunlight hits the wet red rock and the entire canyon seems to glow.

You do not have to hike to enjoy it. Simply driving through Sedona after a snowfall is a scenic experience on its own. The main roads wind between towering formations, and every turn reveals red cliffs striped with white and framed by bright winter sky. Pullouts and overlooks become perfect photo spots, and the slower winter pace means less traffic and fewer crowds.

For those who do want to get out on the trails, winter adds a special quiet. Routes like Munds Wagon Trail and Broken Arrow offer memorable views when dusted with snow, though good footwear and caution are important when conditions are icy.

What makes Sedona in the snow so striking is the contrast. Warm colored stone, cold white snow, and golden sun all meet at once. It feels rare, almost cinematic. If you are willing to plan around the weather instead of avoiding it, winter may become your favorite time to visit.

CHEF’S JOURNAL:

Melrose Memoirs: A Garden Table to Remember

There is a singular kind of magic in an early April garden, particularly one tucked away in the Melrose district. The air has a crisp, new-leaf quality, and the light is long and golden, filtering through new blooms with a gentle touch. This is the setting for a ceremony that was a labor of love, and a menu designed to be as light and refreshing as the spring breeze itself.

My inspiration for this year’s Easter celebration came directly from my garden and the vibrant flavors of Melrose. I wanted appetizers that felt like a spring morning—fresh, surprising, and full of life. We built a three-tier stand on a distressed white garden table, under a trellis of roses, to display these edible treasures.

Here are the three simple yet sophisticated recipes that brought my spring ceremony to life, perfect for your own Easter gathering.

The How-To’s: Three Bites of Spring

These recipes are designed to be elegant but approachable, allowing you to spend less time in the kitchen and more time enjoying the garden.

1. Peppered Papaya with Black Lava Salt

This is the ultimate light starter—a beautiful tension between the tropical sweetness of the papaya and the exotic spice of black lava salt and whole peppercorns.

INGREDIENTS:

1 large, ripe papaya

1 jar whole black peppercorns

1 jar crushed black peppercorns

1 container black lava sea salt

Honey (for drizzling)

Fresh mint sprigs (from the garden)

Edible yellow marigolds (for garnish)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Prep the Papaya: Peel and seed the papaya. Cut the flesh into thick, elegant wedges.

The Honey Drizzle: Arrange the wedges on a large platter. Gently drizzle with your favorite honey, just enough to lightly coat.

The Spice Layer: This is the key. Liberally dust the papaya with a mixture of whole black peppercorns and crushed black peppercorns.

The Finishing Touch: Lightly sprinkle with black lava sea salt. Top with delicate sprigs of fresh garden mint.

Garnish: Complete the platter with fresh yellow marigold flowers, as shown on our top tier. Serve with gold tongs for service.

2. Blackberry Umami Bite

This appetizer is all about texture and the unexpected savory note of black garlic against the creamy, spicy goat cheese.

Ingredients:

1 English cucumber, sliced into rounds

Fresh mango

Habanero pepper (use sparingly)

1 container plain goat cheese

Fresh blackberries

Black garlic sauce

Spicy arugula sprouts

Instructions:

Mango Habanero Shmear: In a small processor, blend the plain goat cheese with a fine dice of fresh mango and a very tiny, safe amount of finely minced habanero. It should be a light orange-hued “shmear.”

The Base: Arrange the English cucumber rounds on your platter.

The Smear: With a palette knife or small spoon, spread a light layer of the spicy mango goat cheese onto each round.

Umami Dollop: With a dropper or small pipette, place a distinct small dollop of the glossy black garlic sauce directly into the center of the cheese smear.

The Berry Top: Gently place a fresh, whole blackberry onto the black garlic.

Garnish: Finish each bite with a few delicate spicy arugula sprouts for a touch of heat and texture. Garnish the platter with scattered edible marigold petals and a vintage gold cocktail fork.

3. Grilled Pineapple Caprese Skewer

This is a hot-and-cold, sweet-and-savory masterpiece, taking the pineapple and giving it a classic Italian twist with Thai basil.

Ingredients:

1 fresh pineapple, cut into large cubes

Aged balsamic glaze (rich and thick)

Thai basil (from the garden)

Black lava sea salt

Beaded gold skewers (or standard wooden skewers)

Instructions:

The Sear: Heat a grill or grill pan to high. Grill the pineapple cubes until they have dark, defined char marks. You are looking for caramelization, not just heat.

The Skewer: Once slightly cooled, thread 3-4 grilled cubes onto each beaded gold skewer.

The Balsamic Glaze: This is critical—use a high-quality, rich, aged balsamic glaze (it should be thick like syrup). Drizzle generously over the entire skewer.

The Thai Basil: Chiffonade fresh Thai basil (this is more anise-forward than standard basil, which is perfect for pineapple) and scatter it generously.

The Sea Salt: Finish with a light, even dusting of black lava sea salt.

Garnish: Serve on a platter garnished with loose, whole edible yellow marigold flowers, making it look as though they are tumbling across the table, just like our bottom tier display.

Peptides, Power & Precision: The Elevated Man’s Guide to Staying Lean, Hard, and Timeless

In a world where aesthetics, energy, and sexual vitality are currency, peptide therapy has become the insider upgrade for men who don’t just want to age, they want to dominate time. But not all peptides are created equal… and some can quietly sabotage everything you’ve built.

The Elite 3: Legal, Effective, Physician-Guided

1. Tesamorelin – The Ab Sculptor

If stubborn abdominal fat is your uninvited plus-one, this is your exit strategy. Clinically proven to reduce visceral fat, Tesamorelin sharpens the waistline while improving metabolic health.

Why it matters:

Visceral fat = inflammation, aging, hormonal disruption. This peptide targets the root, not just the mirror.

CJC-1295 + Ipamorelin – The Physique Enhancers

This duo stimulates your body’s natural growth hormone pulse, translating into:

Lean muscle development, Faster recovery (yes, even after a long weekend in Mykonos), Improved sleep and skin quality

Translation: tighter body, better performance, elevated presence.

3. Sermorelin – The Longevity Classic

Think of this as your entry into hormone optimization without going full replacement. It supports: Gradual fat loss, Energy and endurance, Collagen production (hello, jawline definition)

What About MOTS-c and BPC-157?

Let’s be precise because your health (and your physician’s license) deserves it.

MOTS-c: promising for metabolism and insulin sensitivity

BPC-157: popular for injury repair

Reality check:

Neither is FDA-approved. Neither sits comfortably within U.S. compounding regulations. Both exist in a clinical gray zone. They may be trending in biohacking circles, but trend does not equal safety.

The Real Danger: Black Market Peptides

This is where the fantasy body turns into a clinical nightmare. Underground peptides often involve: (10x variability is not uncommon)

Bacterial contamination (non-sterile labs)

Degraded compounds (poor storage = zero effect)

Counterfeit products (you’re injecting guesswork)

And here’s the part no one advertises:

When your body stops responding, fat loss stalls, libido drops, energy crashes, it’s often not you… it’s the product.

The New Standard: Precision Medicine Meets Aesthetic

Excellence Peptides are not shortcuts. They are signalamplifiers. When prescribed correctly, they elevate:

Hormonal intelligence, Metabolic efficiency, Physical expression, When sourced incorrectly, they create chaos.

The goal isn’t just abs under perfect lighting. It’s confidence at any hour, stamina that matches your lifestyle, and a body that reflects control ant not compromise Because in this game, the real flex isn’t just looking good… It’s knowing you built it the

Stay sharp. Stay selective. Stay elevated.

ION FABULANCE

April rolls in like a plot twist you didn’t see coming but somehow caused. Aries season is loud, bold, and a little reckless, pushing everyone to act first and think… eventually. Then Taurus season steps in, flips on the soft lighting, and says, “Let’s calm down and spend money.” The vibe is impulsive growth mixed with stubborn comfort. Expect bold moves, mixed signals, and at least one decision that feels iconic in the moment and confusing later.

♈ ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 19)

It’s your season, and you’re acting like it—loud, confident, and slightly chaotic. April boosts your courage, but maybe pause before reacting. Not everything needs a dramatic response or a mic drop exit.

♉ TAURUS (Apr 20 – May 20)

Your season arrives late April, bringing comfort, confidence, and a craving for luxury. Treat yourself, but don’t ignore responsibilities. Balance indulgence with reality, even if reality feels personally offensive.

♊ GEMINI (May 21 – Jun 20)

Your social energy is buzzing, but April wants you to focus. Try finishing conversations, plans, and thoughts. Multitasking is cute until nothing actually gets done, including texting people back.

♋ CANCER (Jun 21 – Jul 22)

April nudges you toward emotional growth, which feels suspicious. Open up without overthinking every reaction. Not everyone is analyzing you the way you analyze yourself. Breathe, relax, exist.

♌ LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22)

You’re feeling bold, visible, and slightly dramatic—on brand. April encourages confidence, but also collaboration. Let others shine too. Your spotlight isn’t going anywhere, even if you share it briefly.

♍ VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)

April disrupts your routine just enough to annoy you. Adaptability is key. Not everything needs fixing immediately. Let things be messy for a moment without turning it into a personal crisis.

♎ LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 22)

Relationships feel extra important this month, and so do your boundaries. April asks for balance. You can be charming and still say no without writing a full apology speech.

♏ SCORPIO (Oct 23 – Nov 21)

Your intensity is turned up, and people notice. April pushes transformation, but avoid unnecessary power plays. Not every situation needs strategy. Sometimes honesty works faster than emotional chess.

♐ SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

You’re craving freedom, fun, and possibly a spontaneous escape. April says go explore, but think ahead. Adventure is great until you realize you forgot logistics, money, or basic planning.

♑ CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)

April shifts your focus toward home, comfort, and emotional grounding. Slowing down feels strange, but necessary. Productivity will survive without you for one weekend. Probably. Take the break.

♒ AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)

Your ideas are flowing, but communication needs work. April encourages clarity. Not everyone speaks in abstract concepts. Try explaining things like a human, not a futuristic thought experiment.

♓ PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

April grounds your dreamy energy just enough to function. Focus on practical steps, not just feelings. You can still romanticize life, just remember to pay bills and answer emails too.
